The author considers John Paul II’s treatment of the topic of evolution in order to retrieve its full content. He starts with an analysis of the Pope’s 1996 Address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, especially addressing the problem of the meaning of the words that “the theory of evolution . . . [is] more than a hypothesis,” and the problem of hominization. Then, he explores papal statements from 1985 and 1986. Finally, he concludes that John Paul II’s teaching on evolution appears as fragmentary and ambiguous and, as such, requires greater precision and further development, especially for the sake of the Catholic theology of creation.

W artykule przeanalizowano komponent graniczny kluczowych dokumentów EPS i odpowiednie komunikaty dotyczące okresu od 2003 do 2017 r. Teksty dotyczące EPS uznają granice zewnętrzne za strefę kontaktu i dynamicznej współpracy. Dokumenty ujawniają imperialistyczne tendencje UE i uznają zarządzanie granicami zewnętrznymi za kwestię wspólnej odpowiedzialności ponoszonej przez Unię i jej partnerów.
The paper considers the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) as a byproduct of the EU’s external governance. It identifies the vital role of external borders in the integration processes of the European Union (EU). The paper analyzes the border component of the ENP’s key documents and respective communications covering the period from 2003 to 2017. The ENP texts recognize external borders as zones of contact and dynamic collaboration. The documents reveal the imperialistic incentives of the EU and identify the management of external borders as a matter of joint responsibilities among the Union and partners.

This article presents a study undertaken to investigate how effectively the “Conversation Wall” project serves to connect between students and the student support program at a Midwestern university. The Conversation Wall project has been launched by using the glass window space located in front of the Center for Student Support Program. It serves as a tool for learning about students’ perceptions and experiences related to their campus as well as social and cultural lives. To conceptualize anonymous texts written on the wall, graffiti studies are applied to this study. Both graffiti and texts written on the wall can be loosely defined as writing or drawings on a publicly accessible surface, and they are considered an important source of data for the analysis of cultural production and language use. A total of 1309 texts were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. The results reveal students’ social and cultural lives, the campus climate, the issues that the students care about, and what they need from their university. This article discusses findings and provides recommendations for further improvement to the Student Success Program.

Using the dictionary-based approach to measure the sentiment of finance-related texts is primarily focused on English-speaking content. This is due to the need for domain-specific dictionaries and the primary availability of those in English. Through the contribution of Bannier et al. (2019b), the first finance-related dictionary is available for the German language. Because of the novelty of this dictionary, this paper proposes several reforms and extensions of the original word lists. Additionally, I tested multiple measurements of sentiment. I show that using the edited and extended dictionary to calculate a relative measurement of sentiment, central assumptions regarding textual analysis can be fulfilled and more significant relations between the sentiment of a speech by a CEO at the Annual General Meeting and subsequent abnormal stock returns can be calculated.

The outline addresses the set of songs included in one of the editions of the Toruń cantional by Petrus Artomius (1601). The small extract of the text provided the opportunity to grasp the range and nature of the changes taking places in the Old Polish language when the Polish culture was affected by the Reformation. For this reason, the author attempted to indicate the origin of the works and to trace the edition modifications introduced in the text with particular emphasis on linguistic alterations. In the cantional there appear texts rooted in the Polish Catholic tradition of religious songs (e.g. XVII, XX, XXI, XXVI, XXVII), translations of Protestant carols of Martin Luther known from earlier songbooks (e.g. XXX, XXXII, XXXVI); however, they are often new, modified versions of the songs. In comparison with the first edition of the cantional, the discussed edition was somewhat reorganized, which may be observed in the editor’s attempt to modernize the language of the songs. On the basis of the presented description of philological- stylistic nature one may conclude that the language of the old Protestant community of Toruń did not differ significantly from the Old Polish language of the time. On the one hand, the texts included in the cantional refer to medieval songs stylistically and linguistically. On the other hand, they illustrate the popularity and universality of Polish songs used in religious practices of Protestants, not only Lutherans.

The South Asian postcolonial diaspora has produced multiple new encounters with racism for South Asian immigrants. Colonial forces that repressed non-western traditional thought and knowledge persist today through the coloniality of power. Erasures of South Asian cultures are advanced through imperial legacies of racism, colorism, sexism, and islamophobia. South Asian youth raised in diaspora must negotiate a liminal state poised between their parents’ often romanticized and conservative traditions that were forged in relation to coloniality and the marginality of their own experiences and identities produced through North Atlantic discourses of whiteness and modernity. This article is based on textual analysis of feminist and antiracist discourses in Brown Girl Magazine, a multimedia platform founded by and for South Asian womxn. We use the theoretical frameworks of coloniality and decolonialism to situate everyday practices within broader cultural practices—both contemporary and historical. Our analysis concerns how feminist, anti-racist discourses in Brown Girl Magazine characterize and challenge inequalities affecting South Asians. Our analysis demonstrates some of the discursive strategies deployed in Brown Girl Magazine to construct counter-hegemonic discourses and practices—in particular those used to cultivate a sense of cultural community for South Asian youth.

Cet article considère la caricature en tant que dispositif icono-verbal qui mobilise des codes culturels partagés. Il montre qu’au XIXe siècle, la caricature visuelle (ici Daumier et Gavarni) comme la caricature textuelle (ici Balzac, Baudelaire, Stendhal, Musset, Flaubert, Huysmans) sont pensées sur le modèle de la scène théâtrale qui joue des riches possibilités offertes par la combinatoire du texte et de l'image au cœur des mécanismes comiques. En effet, invalidant le constat d'un primat de l’image sur le texte (position de Charles Baudelaire) ou inversement du texte sur l’image (position de Roland Barthes), cet article rappelle que le visuel et le textuel assument des rôles fluides et qu’ils se complètent. À ce titre, la consonance ou dissonance entre l'image et son titre/sa légende sont deux types de rapports qui concourent à la naissance du rire comme à la richesse sémantique de la caricature. Cette vision d’un rire procédant avant tout de mécanismes formels pourrait tendre à faire croire que l'évaluation des systèmes de valeur mobilisés est superflue. L'important serait de comprendre et d'analyser, pas de juger. Contre une telle prétention, cet article soutient la nécessité d’ajouter à l'analyse formelle d'une œuvre dans son contexte historique un positionnement éthique face à ses implications idéologiques explicites et implicites.
This article considers caricature as an icono-verbal tool that mobilizes shared cultural codes. It shows that in the 19th century, both visual (in this case, Daumier and Gavarni) and textual caricature (in this case, Balzac, Baudelaire, Stendhal, Musset, Flaubert, Huysmans) were designed based on the model of a theatrical scene which plays on the rich possibilities offered by the combination of text and image at the heart of comical mechanisms. Indeed, invalidating the observation of the primacy of image over text (Charles Baudelaire's stance) or vice versa: of text over image (represented by Roland Barthes), this article posits that the visual and the textual take on fluid roles and complement each other. As such, the consonance or dissonance between the image and its title/legend are two types of relationships that contribute to the birth of laughter as well as to the semantic richness of a caricature. This vision of laughter proceeding above all from formal mechanisms could lead one to believe that the evaluation of the adopted value systems is superfluous. The important thing would be to understand and analyze, not to judge. Against such a claim, this article supports the need to add to the formal analysis of a work in its historical context, its ethical positioning in the face of its explicit and implicit ideological implications.

This paper presents results of the literature review from the field of tourism and recreation covering Polish research papers published in the years 2000–2017. The literature review concerns the main issues related to the labour market in tourism economy. This study examines publications in specialist journals, monographs, monograph chapters and a ministerial report on this topic. The aim of the literature review was to establish the evolution of the discussed topics, adopted paradigms and research perspectives. The study was conducted from two points of view, i.e. as a classic textual analysis and as an exploratory analysis performed using Statistica Data Miner software. The analysis indicated that there was a modest but growing number of publications by tourism and recreation specialists and the topics investigated by the researchers were closely related to the changes on the labour market. The subject matter evolved from issues concerning the significance of tourism in boosting demand for labour, the level and structure of demand for specialists in this sector, as well as research focused on the role of employees in efficient operation of tourism enterprises. At the beginning of the 21st century the dominant research trends were based on a positivist paradigm, quantitative structural and functional, as well as economic and spatial analyses. However, these trends were gradually replaced by an interpretative paradigm and humanistic, behavioural, sociological, and interdisciplinary approaches.
Artykuł prezentuje efekty przeglądu publikacji z zakresu turystyki i rekreacji, które ukazały się w Polsce w latach 2000–2017 i były poświęcone szeroko pojętej problematyce rynku pracy w gospodarce turystycznej. Badaniami objęto tylko opracowania zamieszczone w czasopismach specjalistycznych, monografie, rozdziały w monografiach oraz tematyczny raport ministerialny. Celem studiów literatury było ustalenie ewolucji nurtów tematycznych oraz przyjmowanych w nich paradygmatów i orientacji badawczych. Prowadzono je z dwóch perspektyw, czyli jako klasyczną analizę tekstu oraz analizę eksploracyjną z zastosowaniem programu Statisica Data Miner. Badania dowiodły, że problematyka ta cieszyła się niewielkim, ale rosnącym zainteresowaniem specjalistów z zakresu turystyki i rekreacji, a podejmowana przez nich tematyka pozostawała w ścisłej zależności z przemianami zachodzącymi na rynku pracy. Ewoluowała ona od zagadnień dotyczących znaczenia turystyki w stymulowaniu popytu na pracę oraz wielkości i struktury zapotrzebowania na specjalistów w tej branży do badań skoncentrowanych na roli pracownika w efektywnym funkcjonowaniu przedsiębiorstw turystycznych. Zmiany w nurtach badawczych skutkowały zastępowaniem dominującego na początku XXI wieku paradygmatu pozytywistycznego oraz ilościowych, strukturalno-funkcjonalnych i ekonomiczno-przestrzennych ujęć analizowanych zagadnień na paradygmat interpertatywny i ujęcia humanistyczne, behawioralne, socjologiczne oraz interdyscyplinarne.

How we function in social reality is determined by various types of cognitive schemas. These concern people, social events and other phenomena. According to the concept offered by various postpositivist currents, including postmodernism, poststructuralism and critical theory, such schemata cannot be objective. The most important element of postmodern considerations is the discovery of the arbitrary nature of modernity. This means rejecting the Enlightenment belief in progress. Innovation, understood as modernity resulting from human reason, is illusory in the postmodern perspective. Innovation consists precisely in a rejection of the myth of the existence of some absolute, objective truths that constitute the social order. The world is textual, made up of many alternative narratives. Definitions, including legal definitions, are socially constructed. They arise from specific social conditions, at a particular stage of development of a particular group. The assumption made by postmodernists is that language, including professional language – such as the language of law or legal language – is neither neutral nor transparent. The innovative power of this language lies in its use of narratives that influence the functioning of social groups of varying degrees of complexity. It is therefore necessary, adopting a postmodern interpretation, to look at the text of legal language in a similar way as we look at other texts. That is, to see in the narrativity of this language structural similarities with other texts that constitute social reality.

The present paper presents linguistic analysis of the texts extracted from the ABOUT pages in 24 fashion blogs topping the list of influential fashion blogs in 2018. The fashion blogs under consideration are viewed as belonging to personal style fashion blog type. The present research aims at analyzing the way generic features of this type of discourse are displayed by the texts under consideration. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis technique was employed to study the texts in order to explore how consistent they are with social media text type (Twitter, Facebook, blog) according to pre-defined psychological and linguistic categories. LIWC output in relation to each text was interpreted in terms of traditional LIWC dimensions and LIWC variables. The main findings suggest that, linguistically, most texts tend to combine features that are typical of highly personal writing and formal writing intended for official use.
Artykuł został poświęcony analizie lingwistycznej tekstów, wybranych ze stroninternetowych “O blogu” / “O sobie” 24 blogów, poświęconych modzie iznajdujących się na liście najbardziej wpływowych blogów modowych w 2018 r.Uważamy, że blogi fashion należą do gatunku osobistych blogów modowych. Celemniniejszego badania jest analiza tego, jak specyfika, cechująca ten rodzajdyskursu, znajduje swój przejaw w tekstach, będących przedmiotem badania wniniejszym artykule. Do badania tekstów korzystano z programu komputerowegodo analizy tekstowej “Metoda badania lingwistycznego i kalkulacji słów”w celu weryfikacji, jak bardzo badaneteksty odpowiadają charakterystykam rodzajowym tekstów siecispołecznościowych (twitter, facebook, blogi) odpowiednio do określonych zapomocą programu kategorii psychologicznych oraz lingwistycznych. Wynikianalizy każdego tekstu traktowano pod kątem tradycyjnych i zmiennych kategorii, wytypowanych przez program. Głównewniosku umożliwiają założenie, że z lingwistycznego punktu widzenia większośćtekstów łączy w sobie cechy charakterystyczne dla komunikacji personalnejoraz oficjalnej, przeznaczonej do użytku oficjalnego.
