Opis:
Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

Opis:
Because election results are the essential measure of the popular will in liberal democracies, accurate determination of voter intent is a necessary pre-requisite since “what [N] does is not simply make a mark on a piece of paper; he [sic] is casting a vote” (Peter Winch). If every vote counts, then every valid vote must be counted – which means seeing the mark on the paper as intentional action. But, electronic voting systems are increasingly used in Canada. Given the operational vagaries of the use of such machines, the paper asks: How is voter intent mechanically achieved as a practical, social accomplishment of the human beings charged with working the machines and counting the votes? The paper then reports a case study of the tallying of ballots in one municipality in a recent Ontario municipal election where the official result between the two top candidates was a difference of one vote. It focuses on the social production of mechanical consistency in the determination of voter intent during the recount process.

We present first experimental results of $\text{}^{11}$B-NMR of SmB_6 under applied pressure. From measurement of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time $(T_1)$ we find that with applied pressure the value of activation gap $E_{g}$ is decreasing. This decrease is larger than in case of other experimental techniques. We suppose that the enhancement of $1//T_1$ in temperature range 20-100 K with applied pressure reflects not only a suppression of hybridization gap, but also changes in spin correlations.

Opis:
Long-lasting interest in the synthesis of nucleos(t)ide analogues is dictated by hope to obtain compounds possessing antibacterial, antiviral and antitumor activities [1, 2]. Introduction of a methylene linker between an anomeric carbon and the nucleobase nitrogen atom produces a new class of compounds called 1’-homonucleos(t)ides as potentially active analogues. Although a sugar ring in nucleosides can be replaced by several cyclic or even acyclic moieties we focus attention on compounds containing the tetrahydrofuran ring. Since methods of attachment of nucleobases are limited to their alkylation with appropriate compounds and the de novo synthesis we discussed various synthetic approaches to substituted tetrahydrofuranes in racemic or optically pure forms. Various pentose and hexose derivatives were employed as starting materials and their transformations into the final sugar frameworks were detailed, thus revealing the importance of these class of compounds. To prepare deoxysugars Barton-McCombie reaction sequence was applied. A significant number of final 1’-homonucleos(t)ides were screened for antiviral and cytotoxic activity to identify a few very potent compounds. Thus, phosphonates trans- and cis-138a were as active against HCMV as ganciclovir. In addition trans- -138a inhibited the proliferation of several murine and human cancer cell lines with IC50s in the μM range. 1’-Homonucleosides 64b and 66b exhibited selective antiviral activity against HSV-1 TK– and HSV-2 TK– (MIC = 8–12 μg/mL). Compound 129 was found active against HCV (EC = 6.31 μM) and reduced growth of CCRF-CEM cells with IC50 = 5.73 μM. Despite limited activity observed so far for the known 1’-homonucleos( t)ides and their analogues, they deserve further interest both from the synthetic point of view and biological potential inherent in molecules having nucleobase scaffolds.

The utilization of satellites equipped with robotic arms is one of the existing strategies for Active Debris Removal (ADR). Considering that the time intended for on-orbit capturing manoeuvres is strictly limited, any given space robot should possess a certain level of autonomy. This paper is about the control of on-orbit space robots and the testing of such objects in laboratory conditions. The Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN) possesses a planar air bearing microgravity simulator used for the testing of advanced control algorithms of space robots supported on air bearings. This paper presents recent upgrades to the testing facility. Firstly, the base of the space robot is now equipped with manoeuvre thrusters using compressed nitrogen and therefore allowing for position control of the entire system. Secondly, a signal from an external vision system, referencing the position and orientation of the robot’s parts is used by the control system for the closed loop control.

In this paper, the work focus on the advantages of several engineering software to present a case study for the quadrotor system by a used 3D CAD model. The CAD model initially generated using one of the CAD software and it can be accessed from MATLAB software and converted into a virtual physical model. Quadrotors are unmanned aerial vehicles capable of vertical takeoff, hovering, and landing. The quadrotor is distinguished by its small size, flexibility, and maneuverability. The small sensors and actuators used in these systems are effective enough in comparison with the larger systems. The CAD model for the quadrotor system in this study is used to show the capability of the 3D model implementation in modeling and control. These models echo on the real-time models to improve the behavior in the real world. The actual quadrotor device was converted from the real system to a 3D model. Also, the model is converted to SimMechanics for the sake of simulation. Two different control methods are used in this work to stable the motion of the quadrotor system. First the adaptive sliding mode controller with the adaptive controller. Second the adaptive sliding mode controller with the PID controller. The simulation results show the model works fine with the controllers and it preserves the desired position and attitude along the desired predefined path. The results shown when a comparison was made that the ratio of error for PID controller is better.

A 3D discrete dislocation dynamics model is presented that describes dislocation processes in crystals subjected to mechanical loadings at high temperatures. Smooth and curved dislocations are approximated by a set of short straight line segments. A Peach-Koehler force acting upon each segment involves all segment-to-segment interactions and externally applied stress. The segment velocity is a product of a corresponding mobility and the glide or climb component of the Peach-Koehler force. The model addresses interactions between dislocations and rigid spherical precipitates. A migration of low angle tilt boundaries situated in a field of precipitates is simulated as an example. The numerical implementation exploits symmetries of the model that yield an optimized and highly efficient numerical code. Results provide detailed insight into how dislocation arrangements surmount particle fields in 3D crystals.

Opis:
We use 3D discrete dislocation dynamics technique to study a low-angle tilt boundary migration subjected to applied shear stress at high temperatures, where diffusion significantly contributes to the dislocation motion. The model considers Peach-Koehler forces due to interactions between individual straight dislocation segments. The model also addresses dislocation plasticity in a field of impenetrable incoherent spherical precipitates. Velocities of the individual dislocation segments are calculated in relation to the crystallography of the material. Several calculation series have been carried out for different velocity and driving force relations. The results show that there exists a critical applied shear stress, below which the low angle dislocation boundary cannot surpass the rigid precipitates and remains in an equilibrium configuration. This agrees with experimental results obtained in creep tests of dispersion strengthened alloys. The critical stresses have been calculated also for situations where the applied stress was decreased during the interaction between the low-angle tilt boundary and the precipitates.

The use of virtual reality (VR) has been exponentially increasing and due to that many researchers have started to work on developing new VR based social media. For this purpose it is important to have an avatar of the user which look like them to be easily generated by the devices which are accessible, such as mobile phones. In this paper, we propose a novel method of recreating a 3D human face model captured with a phone camera image or video data. The method focuses more on model shape than texture in order to make the face recognizable. We detect 68 facial feature points and use them to separate a face into four regions. For each area the best fitting models are found and are further morphed combined to find the best fitting models for each area. These are then combined and further morphed in order to restore the original facial proportions. We also present a method of texturing the resulting model, where the aforementioned feature points are used to generate a texture for the resulting model.

Opis:
Mobile mapping laser scanning systems have become more and more widespread for the acquisition of millions of 3D points on large and geometrically complex urban sites. Vehicle-based Laser Scanning (VLS) systems travel many kilometers while acquiring raw point clouds which are registered in real time in a common coordinate system. Improvements of the acquisition steps as well as the automatic processing of the collected point clouds are still a conundrum for researchers. This paper shows some results obtained by application, on mobile laser scanner data, of segmentation and reconstruction algorithms intended initially to generate individual vector facade models using stationary Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) data. The operating algorithms are adapted so as to take into account characteristics of VLS data. The intrinsic geometry of a point cloud as well as the relative geometry between registered point clouds are different from that obtained by a static TLS. The amount of data provided by this acquisition technique is another issue. Such particularities should be taken into consideration while processing this type of point clouds. The segmentation of VLS data is carried out based on an adaptation of RANSAC algorithm. Edge points of each element are extracted by applying a second algorithm. Afterwards, the vector models of each facade element are reconstructed. In order to validate the results, large samples with different characteristics have been introduced in the developed processing chain. The limitations as well as the capabilities of each process will be emphasized in terms of geometry and processing time.
