The following sketch aims at presenting the academic achievements of one of the chief Polish professors of the Roman Law, Edward Szymoszek, chair of the Department of the Roman Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Silesia, and a chair of the Department of the Roman Law at the Institute of the History of the State and the Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Wrocław. This publication is even more ustified considering the fact that currently there are no monographs which would constitute a bibliography of the professor. Therefore, the presented sketch could be useful in research on the state of the Roman law in the Middle Ages, a subject on which professor Szymoszek published extensively.

Krzysztof Biliński’s chapter Outlining the Occult Novel on the occult novel aims to describe and examine the features of the genre as well as its reception and interpretation. The starting point, crucial for this analysis, is defining the term “occultism”. Although the examined genre is also interchangeably referred to as “esoteric” or “initiation” novel, the term “occult novel” has been chosen as the one encompassing all others. Constructing the term “occultism”, the author has referred to various definitions appearing throughout the ages up to the present day. This had let Biliński to hypothesize that the notion might include, and in different periods to a certain extent included, other terms, e.g. “esoterism” or “spiritism”, and functioned as a general concept in social consciousness. The second part of this chapter aims to describe the key features of the occult novel, which, according to both authors and researches, occupies the niche between speculative and realistic fiction. For some readers, such literature will be purely unreal, while for those familiar with the occultism, its elements will reflect the rules of the esoteric world, available only to the insiders. Moreover, the novels may frequently be interpreted by means of occult terminology, which reveals their true meaning. It is also obvious that the occult novel is not a unified genre and some of its constitutive features may be found in various works. Therefore, the author proposes to differentiate between three subgenres: occultist utopia, hermetic (initiation) novel, and occultist realism. Each of them is characterized by a set of unique features that can serve as a frame for the majority of occult novels. The suggested approach may provide a point of departure for further research on the occult novel and its influence on human consciousness and worldview.

Masculinity and femininity are only different sides of the same human nature. Therefore, every woman and every man enjoy the same and equally nonvolatile and absolute dignity of the human person. Masculinity and femininity serve each other in achieving their common humanity. Equality and complementarity of men and women have their basis in their common human nature, which has its reference to the Creator. Differences between men and women are associated with their different forms of carrying out their vocations: through fatherhood or motherhood, and with their different experience of suffering reaction to stimuli or shame. Gender equality, having the same human nature, and the differences between the genders generate some “tension” that can only serves the human, family and humanity.

This article displays the most important events and political and legal decisions concerning so called screening process in Poland after 1989. It shows both original serious proposals of the parliament acts and their later versions. The most known controversial situations, including 1992 “dossier nights” and so called “Wilstein’s list” which was made publicly known in 2005, are widely described. The paper is a trial to find an answer to the question if the screening was eventually conducted and if that problem concerns anyway people of the youngest generation who are becoming adults now. The questions concern both the essence of the screening process and methods which have been chosen to its legislation for the years.

The article is based on the source that has hitherto not been exploited. The source which is a fragment of the diary that was taken down by professor Stanisław Tarnowski. The fragment covers the years 1846–1873 and makes up so called Dzików Chronicle that had survived the fi re that broke out in Dzików in 1927. It functions as a supplement to the biography of this eminent scholar whose research was focused on the history of Polish literature. The described developments as seen by the representative of big landowners, were juxtaposed with another known diary, that written by Jan Słomka, a peasant who was the inhabitant of the aforementioned Dzików. What is interesting is the comparison on opinions of two individuals: the one who was the inhabitant of the Palace and the other who was his subject and who lived in the village that belonged to the Palace. The comparison in question referred to the developments of 1846, 1848 and 1863. In a lot of details the opinion uttered by the two coincided. The present contribution is therefore a slight supplement to the history of conservatism in Galicia.

Artykuł stanowi próbę sformułowania problemu logiki filozofii, który niezwykle ważną rolę odgrywa w filozofii neokantowskiej. Explicite sformułowany został w opublikowanej w roku 1911 książce Emila Laska Die Logik der Philosophie und die Kategorienlehre. Problem jednak podejmowało wielu neokantystów i to zarówno ze szkoły badeńskiej jak i marburskiej, a mianowicie Paul Natorp, Wilhelm Windelband, Hermann Cohen, Arthur Liebert. Później problem podejmowany zostaje przez reprezentantów tzw. młodszego neokantyzmu, ale zawsze chodzi o logikę transcendentalną w sformułowaniu Kantowskim.

The article is a biographical outline of Rear Admiral Gereon Grzenia-Romanowski (1916- -1983), who was born in a Kashubian merchant family in Chojnice. He began his military education at the Cadet Corps in Chełmno, and then continued it in Rawicz. Then he was admitted to the Infantry Officer Cadet School in Komorów near Ostrów Mazowiecka. During the September campaign 1939 he fought in the Warsaw Tank-Motor Brigade. In the years of occupation he joined the Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ), and from 1943 he was active in the communist People’s Guard (GL). After 1945, he held many responsible positions in the Polish Army. He was, among others Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the 12th Infantry Division (12th Infantry Division) and the 16th Kashubian Infantry Division (16th KDP). In 1956, he became the deputy commander of the Navy (MW) for political affairs. He remained in this office until 1965. In 1956, he was one of the co-founders of the Kashubian Association (later the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association). After retiring, he worked as a representative of the Polish Ocean Lines (PLO) in China. He died on January 18, 1983.

NEW CONCEPTS IN THE RUSSIAN PHRASEOLOGY (INFORMATIONAL DRAFT No 2) Summary The paper discusses concepts of phraseology by Anatoly Baranov and Dmitry Dobrovolsky, and in particular describes the Thesaurus of russian idioms (Словарь-тезаурус современной русской идиоматики) written by the two scholars, compared with their monograph aspects of a Theory of phraseology (Аспекты теории фразеологии). Both works are described as a challenge for Polish theoreticians of phraseology as well as compilation of phraseological dictionaries and ethnolinguists.

Franciszek Bossowski (1879–1940) was a professor of Roman law. He worked at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius from 1920 to 1939. In this period he was a Dean of Faculty of Law in academic years 1927/1928 and 1928/1929. Bossowski is an author of many valuable papers concerning history and institutions of Roman law, among other things: Znalezienie skarbu wedle prawa rzymskiego (Finding of treasure according to the Roman law); Ze studiów nad pierwotnym testamentem rzymskim (Studies on a primitive Roman testament), Actio ad exhibendum w prawie klasycznem i justyniańskiem (Actio ad exhibendum in classical and in Justinian’s law), Cura prodigi et luxuriosi and Ze studiów nad rei omanistsn. Problem legitymacji biernej (Studies on rei vindicatio. The problem of passive capacity to be a party in a lawsuit). He kept scientific contacts with famous Italian romanists – Salvatore Riccobono and Pietro Bonfante, who both have received doctorates honoris causa of the Vilnius University in 1929. Professor Bossowski was also interested in civil law and comparative law. He was a member of many international and domestic scientific societes. After the outbreak of World War II he was arrested by the Nazis and imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He died in Cracow in 1940, after returning from lager in mortal state.

People’s Republic of Poland – a Sketch for Reflections about the Laicization of the StateThe intention of this text was to ponder on, and attempt to resolve questions whether and to what degree did the laicization policy and atheization campaign conducted by successive political teams in Poland after the Second World War contribute to and accelerate the Dechristianization of Polish society, a process discernible also in other Europe states. What factors (political, social, economic, cultural, etc.) favoured such processes and what sort delayed or outright hampered them? What was the role performed by the Polish Episcopate and its long-term head – Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the Primate of Poland, who intentionally did not hasten the transference onto Polish ground of the accomplishments of the Second Vatican Council? Another significant issue involved the character and intensity of the processes in question. Did they contribute to the modernization of the state and society or, on the contrary, did they conserve their former structure?The author paid considerable attention to the mutual Church–state relations in communist-ruled Poland. It cannot be said that at any time during this period did they resemble those between partners, albeit they indubitably evolved. Such transformations were the consequence of both the internal situation and changes transpiring on the international arena. The foremost premise of all vicissitudes affecting the relations between the Church and the state in post-war Poland (the election of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła as Pope, 1978) possessed both domestic and international dimensions.

Anthropological Sensitivity and the World Presented. An Essay on the Anthropology of Literature Abstract in English Wojciech J. Burszta's essay takes its inspiration from two different sources: it recognises a new, modified attitude to "classical" anthropological texts by Frazer. Malinowski, Mead, Levi-Strauss or Benedict but it also centres round a theory of the literary truth developed by Mario Vargas Llosa. Llosa differentiates between the truth of non-fictional writing (e.g. history, journalism) and the truth of fiction which depends on its power to create illusions and captivate the reader's imagination. Burszta points out that the anthropological discourse is a hybrid form in that respect: it combines a commitment to facts with imaginative recreation of the world, which is characteristic of literature. Thus. according to Burszta, anthropology comes to occupy the no-man's-land in between nonfiction and fiction. Consequently, anthropological imagination will be in close rapport with aesthetic imagination which does not have to rely on the author's actual experiences. .

Artykuł przedstawia rozwój polskich przekładów dzieł niemieckiego poety, pisarza i filozofa Friedricha Hölderlina, którego 250. rocznica urodzin przypada 20 marca 2020 roku. Autor tekstu podaje powody, dla których Hölderlin dość późno wzbudził zainteresowanie literaturą polską. Wskazuje na znaczącą rolę przekładów Stefana Napierskiego z lat 1937 i 1938, ale zwrócił uwagę, że kilka wierszy Hölderlina przetłumaczył także Leo Belmont wcześniej, w 1900 r. W dalszej części artykułu badacz podkreśla znaczenie wybranych wierszy Hölderlina opublikowanych w 1964 roku przetłumaczony na język polski przez Mieczysława Jastruna. Maryjka wskazuje również na znaczenie pionierskiej monografii życia Hölderlina napisanej przez Zdzisława Żygulskiego. W dalszej części opracowania omówione zostaną tomy poezji Hölderlina w tłumaczeniu Bernarda Antochewicza, Andrzeja Pańty, Antoniego Libery i Andrzeja Lama, który jako pierwszy przetłumaczył wszystkie wiersze niemieckiego poety. Autor artykułu nie pominął innych prac, które przyczyniły się do eksploracji twórczości i życia Hölderlina w Polsce, w tym między innymi fabularyzowanej biografii Hölderlin Petera Härtlinga w przekładzie Sławy Lisieckiej, czy tomu zawierającego listy Hölderlina i jego Hyperion przygotowany przez Annę Milską i Wandę Markowską.
The article of Wojciech Maryjka presents the development of Polish translations of the works of the German poet, writer and philosopher, Friedrich Hölderlin, whose 250th birthday anniversary falls on 20 March 2020. The author of the text provides the reasons why Hölderlin evoked interest in the Polish literature rather late. He indicates a significant role of translations of Stefan Napierski dated 1937 and 1938, but he noted that also Leo Belmont had translated several of Hölderlin’s poems earlier, in 1900. Further in the article, the researcher highlights the significance of the Selected Poems by Hölderlin published in 1964 that had been translated into Polish by Mieczysław Jastrun. Maryjka also indicates the significance of the pioneer monograph of the life of Hölderlin written by Zdzisław Żygulski. Further in the study, volumes of Hölderlin’s poetry are discussed, as translated by Bernard Antochewicz, Andrzej Pańta, Antoni Libera and Andrzej Lam, who had been the first who translated all poems of the German poet. The author of the article did not skip other works that contributed to exploration of the works and life of Hölderlin in Poland including, inter alia, the fictionalized biography entitled Hölderlin by Peter Härtling, translated by Sława Lisiecka, or the volume containing Hölderlin’s letters and his Hyperion prepared by Anna Milska and Wanda Markowska.

The aim of the article is to sketch the alternate histories research perspective based on the category of cultural memory. The text recalls the most influential conceptions of cultural memory and interpretations of novels of alternate history genre as a document of memory in foreign researchers’ works. The article presents the main interpretative thesis and the basic elements of the methodological apparatus.
Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie perspektywy badania historii alternatywnych, opartych na kategorii pamięci kulturowej. Tekst przywołuje najbardziej wpływowe koncepcje pamięci kulturowej i interpretacje powieści z gatunku historii alternatywnej jako dokumentu pamięci w pracach zagranicznych badaczy. Artykuł prezentuje główną tezę interpretacyjną i podstawowe elementy aparatu metodologicznego.

Using August Wilhelm Schlegel’s definition of the short story and Tvetan Todorov’s concept of the fantastic, the essay presents three Romantic fantasy short stories. The author focuses on the representation of the body and corporeality. The works analyzed attempt to challenge the post-Enlightenment materialistic perspective and redefine the body and soul dichotomy. The essay discusses three models of presenting the body in the selected short stories. The first model, in Życie po śmierci [Life after Death] by J. I. Kraszewski, follows the logics of the grotesque and presents the body as not only the object, but also the vehicle of narration. The second model, in Lekarz magnetyczny [The Magnetic Doctor] by Józef Dzierzkowski, indicates the physiognomical understanding of the body as a sign, a call for interpretation. The third model, in Dentysta [The Dentist] by Henryk Rzewuski, involves the process of a radical suspension of the body and soul dichotomy: the body is conceived as pure surface.

POLISH AND ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF A HERO OF OUR TIME BY MIKHAIL LERMONTOV - A HISTORICAL SKETCH Summary The article presents the attempt to put in order knowledge concerning Polish and English translations of a Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov. So far there were revealed five Polish and eight English translations of this outstanding novel. The first Polish translation of Герой нашего времени appeared in print in 1844, i.e. only three years after publishing the original novel. Its author was Teodor Köen. The other Polish translations were made by Leszek Borkowski (1848), Czesław Mąkowski (1890), Wiktor Luboradzki (1894) and Wacław Rogowicz (1954).Герой нашего времени was first translated into English language by Theresa Pulszky in 1854. The remaining seven translations were done by R.I. Lipmann (1886), John Swin-nerton-Phillimore (1903), J.H. Wisdom and Marr Murray (1912), Reginald Merton (1928), Paul Eden and Paul Cedar (1940), Martin Parker (1947), Vladimir Nobokov and Dmitri Nabokov (1958).

The article presents a profile of Leon Reutt, an engineer whose political and social activity was focused on Drohobych. He came from a Polish patriotic background and was a member of a “breakthrough” generation which had an opportunity to combine tradition and actual work. Active in academic organisations in Lviv, he was also involved in promoting education among Poles in eastern Galicia. After graduating he became a road engineer and took active part in public life in Drohobycz as its mayor. His greatest achievements included creating a water supply system and carrying out works on improving city’s infrastructure, which included installing telephones, conducting road repairs, and developing gas supply system. The advance of his carrier was blocked by an illness. He was not among the most famous people in the Second Polish Republic, but his contribution to the local government’s activity should not be forgotten. The paths of his personal careers also indicate his political entanglements and difficult choices. Active as his was inside the broadly understood national movement; he then made a U-turn and, as many like him, joined the government supporters after the 1926 May Coup.

Seit den Studien von R. Reitzenstein und A. Kiefer über die hellenistischen Wundererzählungen werden öfters in der Wunder-Jesu-Forschung die antiken Aretalogien als Parallelen gewertet. Die divergierende Beurteilung und Auswertung dieses Vergleiches wurzelt sicher in der Vieldeutigkeit des Aretalogiebegriffes. Der Verfasser bemüht sich um eine genauere Gattungsbestimmung der Aretalogie. Anhand der Inschriften von Epidauros stellt er eine sakrale Aretalogie fest. Die verschiedenen Wundererzählungen aus der sog. theios anér – Literatur werden als biographische Aretalogien bezeichnet. Das Wundermotiv in der Lyrik und im Drama, welches in der jeweils entsprechenden literarischen Form zum Ausdruck kommt, wird als aretalogisches Motiv betrachtet.

The article discusses the issues of contemporary narratology. The author assumes that narratology is inextricably linked to poetics and rhetoric. The object of narratology is cultural space, which is created by texts in a particular rhetorical modality. However, its reflections includes subjects such as communication strategies and discursive practices. Each narrative discourse involves combining referential and communication events. According to the author, such a view of contemporary narratology opens up a number of new interpretation possibilities.

Basic linguistic ontology and plants: A semantic sketchThis article is devoted to verbs collocating with the Polish lexeme roślina ‘plant’. The aim of the study is to determine the linguistic status of the plant and to investigate whether it is ‘someone’ or ‘something’ in view of the semantics of the verbs in question. The author analyses cases in which the plant appears in the semantic role of the agent. She makes conclusions about how the lexeme roślina functions in Polish and defines its unique features (semantic connectivity) and semantic roles. The study is based on language surveys conducted among native speakers of Polish. Language analysis reveals the place of the plant in the hierarchy of living organisms. Elementarna ontologia językowa rośliny – szkic semantycznyPrzedmiotem artykułu są polskie czasowniki, które zgodnie z łączliwością semantycznoskładniową występują z leksemem roślina. Celem tekstu jest ustalenie językowego statusu rośliny oraz, dzięki badaniu semantyki czasowników, znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy roślina jest kimś, czy czymś. Autorka analizuje czasowniki, w których roślina występuje w semantycznej roli agensa; następnie na podstawie badań językowych formułuje wnioski dotyczące sposobu funkcjonowania leksemu roślina w języku polskim, określając jego cechy unikatowe (łączliwość semantyczną) oraz role semantyczne. Metody wykorzystane w pracy to testy językowe na materiale pozytywnym i negatywnym oparte na kompetencji językowej użytkowników polszczyzny. Analiza językowa odkrywa miejsce wyznaczone dla rośliny w hierarchii organizmów żywych.

The article presents a soundscape sketch of Old Basel (Greater and Lesser Ba- sel, and the historical Suburb). Field research carried out in 2015 allowed to observe the characteristic sounds of this area. Its uniqueness stems from the presence of water sounds (a thick web of watercourses and inland waterway sailing). A dominant sonic element in the city centre are the acoustic church bells and city gates. Th eir tones in polyphony send a consistent message with the city’s image. Th e diversity of sounds is ensured by many street musicians present in various spaces, but also tourists and city dwellers spending most of their free time outdoors (promenades along the river, town squares, and restaurant gardens), which contributes to a vivid human rumble. Restricted car access zones limit the presence of vehicle sounds in the Old Town, with the exception of the typical sounds of trams and large numbers of cyclists.

The main premise of the presented study is to show the impact of World War Two events on the creative achievements of selected artists who treated these dramatic events as the direct source of inspiration. The primary object of interest are selected musical pieces composed in the twentieth and twenty-fi rst centuries, analyzed at the same time from the perspective of their correspondence with other domains of art: painting, sculpture, poetry, and partly with fi lm. The article discussed Arthur Honegger’s Second and Third Symphony, compositions: Diffrent Trains by Steve Reich, and Diaries of Hope by Zbigniew Preisner, and in the fi eld of fi ne art: inter alia the painting works by Izaak Celnikier, Xawery Dunikowski, Bronisław Wojciech Linke, and Andrzej Wróblewski, selected monument sculptures (e.g. in the Majdanek Concentration Camp in Lublin), and with special emphasis on works devoted to the tragedy of the Holocaust. An important aim of the paper is to show the possibility of utilizing the presented content in interdisciplinary teaching provided for in the Ministry of National Education’s core curriculum for general education in art subjects and the subject Knowledge of Culture.
