    Opis:
    This article describes the course of World War II in the Intermarium region in relation both to the national policies of several countries and to the resistance movement organized by the communities opposing the Soviets as well as German domination. The first phase of events takes place in the period from September 1939 to the German invasion of the USSR; the second phase lasts until the end of the war and launches the partisan actions inspired by communist organizations on behalf of the Communist International (Comintern). The aim of the partisans’ actions was the resistance to the domination of the Third Reich and Italy achieved through diversions at the rear of the armies of the Axis powers. At the same time the Soviets’ joining the alliance results in treaties of the Big Three (The USA, Great Britain and the Soviet Union) establishing the political order for Europe after the end of WWII, particularly the subjugation of Intermarium countries by the Soviet domination.

    Opis:
    Leszek Szaruga’s novel is built by two interweaving narrative sequences which may be arbitrarily called photographic and historical ones. Photography and history function here through literature, in a closed off and finite semiotic system – constituted by a novel. It is literature which establishes the scope of reference for them. A photograph here is repeatedly a part of somebody’s story (by inscribing itself into the anthology of private narratives), while a story is somebody’s “photograph” (by inscribing itself into the album taken from history archives). Historic qualities of photography and, conversely, photographic ones of history determine each other mutually. A photograph presenting starving people in Africa triggers a character’s reflection, whereas co-existence of beauty and terror in a photograph makes him embark on a number of actions: photographing the photograph, or optical enlarging of its details. This, in turn, seems to constitute a kind of simulation of participating in the presented events which indicates taking up a hermeneutical game with reality. 20th century history of Poland, viewed from a perspective of the 1990s, is being written out for a set of life histories of people who represent different generations, thus forming a historic narrative chain in the novel. The novel’s polylogue on historical topics, as well as reflection revealed by the character under the influence of the viewed photograph create a dynamic anthropological project based on an assumption that being outside history is utopia, while existence means activeness, consciousness, and responsibility.

    Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji tego nurtu literatury po roku 1989, który skupia się na odbudowie tożsamości lokalnej, a określany jest często jako „literatura małych ojczyzn”. W jego ramach dochodzi m.in. do reinterpretacji zjawisk historycznych, przywracania czy kreowania pamięci poprzez odblokowanie obszarów objętych w peerelii zapisami cenzorskimi. Podstawowym zadaniem tego nurtu – który należy traktować jako przejściowy – jest postawienie pytań tożsamościowych. Ten etap stanowi przygotowanie do przyszłego przewartościowania tej problematyki i jest punktem wyjścia do wykorzystania tych możliwości, jakie literaturze daje uzyskana wolność polityczna.
