The aim of the article is to show the role of various metaphorical practices that are a dominant structural feature of Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose, used to construct his textual reality. Comparisons, metaphorical statements, and enumerations represent textual figures that transform the described experience of the world from the perspective of the speaking subject, subjectivising and constructing reality, rather than merely representing it. In both his novels and feuilletons, Stasiuk relates his experiences of the world in different temporal orders, constructing them on a textual level. Yet his thoroughly subjective prose preserves the conventions of realism. At the same time, Stasiuk quite often refers to the genre of the road novel, both in his fiction and in his journalism. Textual figures of experience are his basic means of describing the presented world.

Opis:
Travelling is the passion of the Polish, contemporary writer Andrzej Stasiuk. It is for him a goal in itself but also a point of reference for the definition of his own nation and country facing geopolitical change (My Europe, 2000; Dojczland, 2007; Waiting for the Turk, 2009), which constantly demands to be revised. Travelling serves the writer as a solitary but in the end illusory way of experiencing and capturing the material world in the face of perpetual annihilation. Stasiuk’s nostalgic journeys become a pretext for archiving the transient material world - Europe, which fades in front of our eyes and, by means of the author’s craft, metamorphoses into a myth, and makes the text another testimony of his geopoetics.

The text is aimed at showing the way of portraying the mentality and customs of Moldovians after 1989 in Andrzej Stasiuk’s recollection travelogue from his travels to the countries of former USSR entitled Jadąc do Babadag. Stasiuk’s work is interesting to the author because of the ostalgic reactions of Moldovians who are in the process of searching and defining their identities. However, the most important aspect for the author is to obtain evidence of the Polish postcolinial awareness from the work.
Tekst poświęcony został sposobowi obrazowania mentalności i obyczajowości mieszkańców Mołdawii po 1989 roku, w zaproponowanym przez Andrzeja Stasiuka zbiorze wspomnieniowym z podróży po krajach byłego ZSRR, zatytułowanym Jadąc do Babadag. Autorkę interesuje tekst Stasiuka ze względu na odnotowane w nim reakcje ostalgiczne Mołdawian, którzy znajdują się na etapie poszukiwania i definiowania własnej tożsamości, przede wszystkim jednak zainteresowana jest wydobyciem z relacji pisarza sygnałów polskiej świadomości postkolonialnej.

Only a limited number of authors have written about Albania, a country that remained closed to foreigners, mainly because of Enver Hodja’s communist dictatorship. Joseph Roth , a Jewish-Austrian writer and journalist, devoted six articles to Albania in 1927. Polish author Andrzej Stasiuk devoted several texts to this country, including a long chapter of Jadąc do Babadag (On the Road to Babadag), published in 2004. Even though Andrzej Stasiuk deeply admires J. Roth, the articles by the Austrian writer cannot possibly have influenced him as they have not been translated into Polish. What is studied here is the discrepancy between the two visions of Albania, false similarities, and finally Stasiuk’s originality which is part of a wider reflection on the diversity and unity of the former Eastern Europe. Roth’s vision focuses on politics and diplomacy, and is tinged with pessimism; as for Stasiuk, he is bent on interverting viewpoints and reversing prejudices, his inspiration, however, is more metaphysical and his style tends to be apocalyptical.

The aim of this article is to shed light on the role of Podlasie in Andrzej Stasiuk’s latest prose, especially in texts such as Fado, Grochów and Wschód. After a brief excursus examining what issues are raised in relation to this region in contemporary Polish prose, the analysis sheds light on the values attributed to Podlasie and the way it is represented by Stasiuk. I shall argue that it is thematised accordingly to commonly shared meanings attached to the region and constitutes the final step of the author’s shaping of “imaginary geographies”, which acquires in Stasiuk’s poetics a precise connotation as both a place of remembrance and a symbolic, constructed image of the Orient.
