    In the Soviet Ukraine, political folklore was a powerful channel of unofficial com-munication for a large part of that country’s population. Telling jokes and performing songs that ridiculed communist authorities as early as in the 1920s was a widespread way of expressing mass resistance against totalitarianism for many Ukrainians. In the 1930s-50s’, the Soviet apparatus of repression applied punishments of imprisonment lasting 3 to 10 years to those disseminating folkloric political satire along with confisca-tion of their property. Some people who were repressed for carrying out political folklore never returned from the GULAG. This article is based on folklore materials gleaned from criminal cases found in former NKVD and KGB archives, which were made available to researchers in 2015 in the Ukraine.

    The article is published for information and it is a guide book about the resources the University of Rzeszów Research Centre on Polish Diaspora and Poles in the World. It should be useful for researchers interested in Polish diaspora issues in post-Soviet countries. The aim of the article is the presentation of archival materials connected with that issue. It is composed of two parts. The first part contains the characteristics of the University of Rzeszów archival materials. The second part presents projects which were carried out by the Research Centre on Polish Diaspora and Poles in the World and which are related to the Polish diaspora in post-Soviet countries.

    In 1920-1950, Soviet authorities used different strategies in response to Ukrainian folklore. On the one hand, they recognised folklore as the “voice of the people”, while stressing the importance of oral traditions in the formation of the “new man”, thus encouraging the collection of folklore materials. According to Soviet ideologists, folklore can be seen as a source of inspiration for poets and musicians who create new songs for the working people. For some folklorists such ideas came as an incentive for creating a new “Soviet folklore”. For decades, the Soviet propaganda machine would widely imitate the traditional Ukrainian folklore expressed in oral form, while at the same time praising the pantheon of “communist saints”. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian Soviet folklore ignored Authentic Folklore, which was often highly critical of the Soviet reality.

    This text is an attempt to acquaint the reader with the writer’s biography of Oleg Grigoryev, a Russian poet and a representative of “the literary underground”. His works can be classified as urban folklore. Most of his poems are full of harsh irony, which may shock with its dark humour. Grigoryev often resorts to the poetics of the absurd, which may lead a keen reader to the conclusion that he is close to the creative actions of the poetic group of the Oberiuty with Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedenski as their main representatives. In this light, Grigoryev’s poetry can be interpreted as a reflection of the dark Soviet reality in which he lived and with which he struggled. Such an attitude surely did not help him in succeeding within the official Russian literature.
