    The authors propose a frame to develop mathematical models describing the resilience of the service(s) supply processes and the associated critical-infrastructure(s), in crisis situation. The paper is intended to contribute in developing the paradigm of resilience and appropriate metrics. It describes briefly the paradigm of resilience used in some scientific disciplines, especially: the physical-mechanical resilience (material sciences), the ecological resilience and the psychological resilience. Presently, the use of resilience is very loos, especially, in analysing vital service supply continuity and in crisis management, as far as we are concerned. An advanced resilience concept should encompass: temporality, stochasticity and measurability. The authors propose an R&D frame to develop such formal models in order to help in resilience analysis and decision making for crisis management. Formal models are necessary to rationalise analyses, normalise best practices and build decision making processes. The proposed R&D frame integrates: vulnerability and dependency/interdependency.

    Opis:
    Focusing on the industrial sector, this research aims to identify conditions for the implementation of internal marketing concepts among employees and its impact on the organisational performance. Only one study was found simultaneously integrating the two constructs. It concerned the cork processing industry alone, yet considered expanding the efforts – namely, using qualitative exploratory research in the form of 10 in-depth interviews based on a script of generally open questions – to the entire industry in the Portuguese region between rivers Douro and Vouga. The unit of analysis was constructed considering distinct features as well as activity criteria and the geographic location, thus ensuring the necessary heterogeneity. The results inform about the awareness of the internal marketing conceptualisation. The research found that all analysed enterprises had more or less structured model frames and worked with the conceptualisation of the guidance for the internal market, a strategic concern, and in some instances, this concept was an organisational desideratum in the sector. In addition to the lapse of the research according to a qualitative paradigm of exploratory nature, the main limitation is the need for objective sustainably of the results obtained through future quantitative studies to promote an integrated triangulation of their outcomes. The research allowed identifying the companies that use organisational models conducive to the individual well-being of employees and facilitating the desired orientation to the market.

    Froth flotation of copper-zinc-lead ores is a complex process based on similar metallurgy processing and strong interactions between chalcopyrite and sphalerite. These types of ores represent 15% of the world production and 7.5% of copper deposits all over the world. In the present study, an attempt is made to assess the feasibility of froth flotation of a complex sulphide ore, where the effect of liberation grade as well as depressant, collector and frother dosage was studied. Copper flotation is dependent on the mineral liberation grade, which is significantly related with the size distribution. It was shown that longer grinding time increased the Cu grade but decreased the copper recovery due to the presence of very fine particles. Lime and sodium metabisulphite, used as depressants, allowed to achieve a good flotation performance. It was shown that for this type of ore lower dosage of the collector should be applied. Finally, a higher frother dosage led to a greater selectivity and reduced entrainment of very fine particles, but also caused low kinetic ratio and low recovery of valuable minerals. A well-defined flotation objective was imperative for a good liberation grade and reagents dosage selection, mainly for complex sulphide ores. A useful contribute was given to a better technical understanding of flotation of a complex sulphide ore from the Moinho deposit.

    Studies linking the use of lean practices to company performance have been increasing as markets are becoming more competitive and companies are eager for reducing waste and therefore implementing the Lean Management (LM) philosophy to improve performance. However, results from these studies have found various and different impacts and some light is needed. Extant literature was reviewed and, to achieve the research objective, a metaanalysis of correlations was carried out. The obtained results suggest a positive relationship between some lean practices and performance measures. Furthermore, the presence of moderators influencing the relationship between lean practices and performance outcomes is highlighted in our results. To our best knowledge, this is the first research that proposes a comparison of results from primary studies on Lean implementation, by analysing the linear relationship between lean practices and enterprise performance. It fills this gap and therefore represents an important contribution.

    A zero-one quadratic assignment model has been proposed for dealing with the storage location assignment problem when there are weight constraints. Our analysis shows that operations can be improved using our model. When comparing the strategy currently used in a real-life company with the designed model, we found that the new placement of products allowed a reduction of up to 22% on the picking distance. This saving is higher than that achieved with the creation of density zones, a procedure commonly used to deal with weight constraints, according to the literature.

    W artykule omawiam koncepcję prawdziwości emocjonalnej jako prawdziwości rodzajowej, autorstwa Ronalda de Sousy. Wydaje się, że pojęcie prawdy emocjonalnej może być potrzebne w kontekście współczesnych rozważań metaetycznych, aksjologicznych, a także sporu między naturalistami etycznymi i ich oponentami. Jak wskazuję w artykule, pojęcie prawdziwości emocjonalnej jest jednak trudne do konceptualizacji, choć stanowi ciekawą ideę filozoficzną.

    This paper presents a methodology for contact detection between convex quadric surfaces using its implicit equations. With some small modifications in the equations, one can model superellipsoids, superhyperboloids of one or two sheets and supertoroids. This methodology is to be implemented on a multibody dynamics code, in order to simulate the interpenetration between mechanical systems, particularly, the simulation of collisions with motor vehicles and other road users, such as cars, motorcycles and pedestrians. The contact detection of two bodies is formulated as a convex nonlinear constrained optimization problem that is solved using two methods, an Interior Point method (IP) and a Sequential Quadratic Programming method (SQP), coded in MATLAB and FORTRAN environment, respectively. The objective function to be minimized is the distance between both surfaces. The design constraints are the implicit superquadrics surfaces equations and operations between its normal vectors and the distance itself. The contact points or the points that minimize the distance between the surfaces are the design variables. Computational efficiency can be improved by using Bounding Volumes in contact detection pre-steps. First one approximate the geometry using spheres, and then Oriented Bounding Boxes (OBB). Results show that the optimization technique suits for the accurate contact detection between objects modelled by implicit superquadric equations.
    W artykule przedstawiono metodologię wykrywania kontaktu między wypukłymi powierzchniami typu kwadryki (superkwadratowymi) opisanymi równaniami uwikłanymi. Po niewielkich modyfikacjach równań, można modelować uogólnione elipsoidy, hiperboloidy jedno- lub dwupowłokowe oraz toroidy. Opisana metodologia ma być zaimplementowana w programie do symulacji układów wieloczłonowych i służyć do modelowania wzajemnej penetracji układów mechanicznych, w szczególności do symulacji kolizji pojazdów mechanicznych z innymi użytkownikami dróg, takimi jak samochody, motocykle i piesi. Zagadnienie detekcji kontaktu między dwoma ciałami jest formułowane jako wypukły, nieliniowy problem optymalizacyjny z ograniczeniami, który jest rozwiązywany przy użyciu dwu metod: metody punktu wewnętrznego (Interior Point, IP) oraz metody sekwencyjnego programowania kwadratowego (Sequential Quadratic Programming, SQP), dostępnych odpowiednio w środowiskach MATLAB i FORTRAN. Funkcja celu podlegająca minimalizacji jest odległością pomiędzy obiema powierzchniami. Ograniczeniami optymalizacji są uwikłane równania powierzchni drugiego stopnia oraz operacje pomiędzy ich wektorami do nich normalnymi i odległością. Zmiennymi decyzyjnymi są punkty kontaktu lub punkty wyznaczające minimalną odległość pomiędzy powierzchniami. Efektywność obliczeniową można poprawić stosując metodę objętości otaczających (Bounding Volumes) we wstępnych krokach detekcji kontaktu. Najpierw aproksymuje się geometrię ciał za pomocą kul, a następnie zorientowanych prostopadłościanów otaczających (Oriented Bounding Boxes, OBB). Wyniki pokazują, że taka technika optymalizacji zapewnia dokładną detekcję kontaktu pomiędzy obiektami modelowanymi przy użyciu uwikłanych równań powierzchni drugiego stopnia.

    The study aimed to examine the influence of body composition and menopause characteristics on certain temporal parameters of the behavior of vertical and anteroposterior components of ground reactive forces, as well as the vertical and anteroposterior rates on the walking of postmenopausal women. The sample consisted of 67 postmenopausal women, average age 59 years. Body composition was assessed by octapolar bioimpedance and ground reactive force by the Kistler force platform. Vertical loading rate correlated positively with age (r = 0.02) and negatively with weight (r = –0.33). The relationship between the rates of vertical loading and unloading associated positively with menopause time (r = 0.27) but negatively with weight (r = –0.27). Vertical unloading rate showed a negative association with abdominal visceral adiposity (r = –0.27). The relationship between the times of the intermediate and final phases of the support correlated significantly with abdominal visceral adiposity (r = 0.25) and fat mass (r = 0.24). The study suggests that fat mass and abdominal visceral adiposity affect the support time, and increased abdominal visceral adiposity implies a slower pre-suspension phase during the walking of postmenopausal women. Hormone replacement therapy was shown to be an enhancer of steeper vertical loading and anteroposterior unloading and longer time in the double support phase, indicating a greater stability of postmenopausal women when walking.

    Donkeys are a public health concern in the Northeast region of Brazil, with thousands of stray animals. Orchiectomy is an important population control measure; however, the long postoperative period with daily treatment of open wounds in the scrotum makes it difficult to perform a large number of castrations in sheltering centers. We evaluate a novel surgical procedure for orchiectomy in donkeys using parascrotal access. Twelve donkeys were used, divided into two groups: I - submitted to orchiectomy through parascrotal surgical access (novel procedure), and II - submitted to orchiectomy through scrotal access (conventional). Postoperative evaluations consisted of a macroscopic evaluation of the surgical wound (bleeding and intensity of edema), hematological parameters, and peritoneal fluid, which occurred in both groups at the moments (M): M0 - before the surgical procedure. The others moments occurred after surgery: M12 (twelve hours); M24 (twenty-four hours); M48 (forty-eight hours); M72 (seventy-two hours); M8D (eight days); and M16D (sixteen days). The surgical techniques did not generate an important systemic inflammatory response to the point detected by the leukogram, fibrinogen dosage, and peritoneal fluid. The parascrotal technique required long surgery but promoted less bleeding, less edema, and faster healing. The techniques used did not promote sufficient systemic inflammation to alter the number of leukocytes and the fibrinogen concentration; however, evaluation of the peritoneal fluid proved to be important for evaluating inflammatory processes involving the scrotum and inguinal canal. We describe a novel surgical procedure for orchiectomy in Donkeys using a parascrotal access that promoted less risk of bleeding, shorter period of edema, and healing time, but required longer surgery time.
