Opis:
Maintenance involves a large amount of data management. Although many tools, strategies, and systems, have been developed to organize the maintenance information resources, SMEs have not found the same benefits as large companies due to their inherent characteristics and, above all, the maturity level of the maintenance department. Maturity models are useful tools for assessing the maturity of maintenance information practices; however, existing models are not suitable for any type of business context, as they required companies to have a clear organizational structure and definite informative infrastructure. Moreover, they do not assist in identifying and defining actions to reach the highest level. This paper proposes a model for assessing and improving maintenance management information practices. It allows a clear measure of the maturity of the maintenance information management practices in industrial contexts and provides improvement actions identifying the information and data needed to enhance maintenance management information practices.

Opis:
Purpose – The aim of this article is to identify the issues of short food supply chains (SFSCs) in three countries of Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, to compare the barriers to shortening food supply chains and to indicate business models for short supply chains. Design/methodology/approach – Within the AgroBRIDGES project, the authors organized local co-creation workshops from August to September 2021 in 12 European regions and countries, engaging 150þ agrifood stakeholders of the project’s local communities. Findings – The development potential of SFSCs in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland is high and seems to be growing every year. Currently, the development potential of SFSCs in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland is stimulated more by social trends than by public support. Traditional business models based on the distribution of food products through local and regional markets have a definitely diminishing potential. Research limitations/implications – Although this article covers an existing gap in the literature, it also has several limitations that may serve as an inspiration for future research. First, the results draw on a sample of agrifood value chain stakeholders in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland; hence, the findings might be industry specific. Therefore, future studies should explore this topic on wider target groups or different industries. Moreover, the method is qualitative and could be supplemented with additional quantitative analysis of similar tools or the experience of other agrifood companies from European countries. Practical implications – The article seeks to build bridges between consumers and producers by supporting SFSCs through a systemic, holistic and multi-actor approach. Originality/value – The study elaborates on the under-researched topic of SFSCs in the context of barriers to shortening food supply chains and business models for short supply chains in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.

Relating to the accelerated development in the world of business, third-party logistics (3PL) providers have globally become a prevalent practice among many organizations, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to extant studies, the most common four logistics services usually provided through 3PLs (outsourced) are: delivery service, supplying, warehousing, and transportation services. With that being said, this paper presents an analysis of the SME outsourcing practice among a sample of Jordanian trading companies and the posited impact on the performance of their outsourcing efforts.

Purpose – Manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have already noticed the tangible benefits offered by artificial intelligence (AI). Several approaches have been proposed with a view to support them in the processes entailed in this innovation path. These include multisided platforms created to enable the connection between SMEs and AI developers, making it easier for them to network each other. While such platforms are complex, they facilitate simultaneous interaction with several stakeholders and reaching out to new potential users (both SMEs and AI developers), through a collaboration with supporting ecosystems such as digital innovation hubs (DIHs). Design/methodology/approach – Mixed methods were used. The literature review was performed to identify the existing approaches within and outside the manufacturing domain. Computer-assisted telephonic (in-depth) interviewing, was conducted to include perspectives of AI platform stakeholders and collect primary data from various European countries. Findings – Several challenges and barriers for AI platform stakeholders were identified alongside the corresponding best practices and guidelines on how to address them. Originality/value – An effective approach was proposed to provide support to the industrial platform managers in this field, by developing guidelines and best practices on how a platform should build its services to support the ecosystem.

The article presents a business model based on an industrial network of companies capable of producing personalized products in an Industry 4.0 environment. Based on research conducted in Poland, in manufacturing companies, the critical problems associated with the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies and the expected benefits associated with their implementation are addressed. The model’s task is to integrate a customer expecting personalized production with a network of companies with the appropriate production resources. The original achievement is the integration of the customer and the manufacturer around an e-business platform, which allows the rapid prototyping of a network of SME companies capable of realizing personalized production. The proposed model describes the architecture of enterprise cooperation under the conditions of implementing the Industry 4.0 concept and is dedicated to the SME sector. The model provides a basis for building prototypes of e-business platforms of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Opis:
Research background: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a fundamental role in countries’ economies. Currently, entrepreneurs are struggling not only with the uncertainty of the business environment, but also with high expectations for businesses to be run in a sustainable way. Therefore, the impact of corporate reputation and social media on sustainability is an area of interest for entrepreneurs. In this context, little research has been conducted on their perception of the linkage between these issues. Furthermore, there has been no direct explanation of the effects of SMEs’ reputation and social media usage on their sustainable development, especially in the V4 countries. Purpose of the article: This article defines, quantifies, and verifies the effects of corporate reputation and social media on sustainable development as perceived by SMEs’ owners and top managers in the V4 countries. Methods: Data were gathered in December 2022 and January 2023 using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method. The survey was designed based on a literature review and experts’ opinions. Respondents (top managers of SMEs, n = 1090) were asked questions on their firms’ characteristics, reputation, social media usage and sustainable development. The linear regression modelling (LRM) was utilised to evaluate the hypothesis. Findings & value added: The study revealed a strong relationship between owners’ and top managers’ perceptions of the importance of both corporate reputation and sustainable development in SMEs. The belief that social media supports the growth of companies’ performance is related to the understanding of the concept of sustainable business development. Surprisingly, for the owners and top managers of SMEs in V4 countries, there was no relationship between the awareness of social media usage to share information with customers and partners and the understanding of sustainable business growth.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of SMEs on job creation in the WB6 countries (North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Serbia). During the last two decades, the countries in the Western Balkans region have faced different economic challenges, including employment-related issues and the question of who is in fact the creator of new jobs in this region. The paper employs explanatory methodology, through analysis of the statistical data collected in the Enterprise Survey conducted by the World Bank Group. The data analyzed covers three periods, i.e., year 1 (2009), year 2 (2013), year 3 (2019). The surveys were administered to a representative sample of 5358 firms in the non-agricultural, formal, private sectors, including small, medium and large enterprises. The paper concludes that the most widespread type of business activity in the Wester Balkan countries are SMEs, which tend to employ more than large enterprises, with an average share of 45%-77%, by which they contribute more to new job creation, compared to large enterprises, and are indeed the ones reducing job scarcity and exhibiting a smaller share in job shrinkage. The implications arising from the paper are twofold, i.e., they can inspire both the academic and researcher circles to analyze even further the impact of SMEs, by including additional measuring indicators as well the policy makers to revise the policy of assisting SMEs in any means possible. The paper fills the gap in the existing literature dealing with the impact of SMEs on job creation in the WB region. The relevance of this research stands in fact that the study addresses the impact and relevance of SMEs’ job creation in countries known for their long transition period.

Opis:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) play a special role in the modern economy. At the same time, the difficulty in accessing sources of financing is the main barrier limiting the development of this sector. Despite this, studies of the capital structure of SMEs are performed less frequently than among large enterprises. The aim of this paper is to examine which capital structure theory best explains the financial decisions of SMEs in Poland. Additionally, an attempt is made to identify the main firm-specific capital structure determinants. The research material includes financial data from 2,820 SMEs in Poland operating in the 2011–2018 period. Static and dynamic panel models were applied to conduct the analysis. The study found that most SMEs in Poland behave in accordance with the pecking order theory. However, the results of testing the trade-off theory indicate that there may be a group of companies seeking an optimal capital structure according to the assumptions of this theory. The speed of adjustment is about 24%. The study confirmed a positive relationship between SME indebtedness and firm size. The same relationship was found for the growth rate. The opposite direction was identified for tangibility and liquidity.
Chociaż utrudniony dostęp do kapitału jest główną barierą rozwoju sektora małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw (MŚP), we współczesnej gospodarce odgrywają one szczególną rolę. Do przeprowadzenia analizy wykorzystano statyczne i dynamiczne modele panelowe. Szybkość dostosowań do docelowej struktury kapitału wynosi ok. 24%.

At the present time, with continuous market changes, customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees are the most important factors for building managerial systems and implementing of the strategy in many companies. The goal of this paper is to develop a multi-faced knowledge management-based strategy combining analytical and qualitative methods and processes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that managers can use to achieve strategic performance goals in their organizations. Various methods with the currently used modern technologies and a developed organizational culture make up the knowledge management system as a method inspired by the leadership, focused primarily on customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees. A multi-faced approach for building knowledge management-based strategy in small and medium companies is developed. It is based on practical experience and a research literature background incorporating implemented technologies and tools in quality environment with the usage of knowledge management. This research depicts a proposal of knowledge management-based strategy as a response to the lack of studies that address the knowledge management in building strategy in SME. Furthermore, this approach enhances the existing literature, giving insight in the collection of current business models.

Purpose: The main aim of the article is to present the concept of age diversity management and selected results of own research study made on SMEs from the Poznań poviat. The choice of the area of interest results from the fact that over the last several decades, both the population and the labor force are aging. Such a situation may lead to a reduction in the total number of people employed, investments through a decrease in savings and an increase in pressure on the pension system and the state budget. Design/methodology/approach: Fifty SMEs from the Poznań poviat of the Greater Poland voivodeship participated in the study. In addition, enterprises should employ a minimum of 4 people up to 50 and a minimum of 4 over 50 years old. The survey was carried out using the CATI and PAPI methods. Findings: Based on the research, it can be indicated that the vast majority of SMEs in the analyzed area do not have an age management system in place. Moreover, the needs of the older workers are not realized enough by the managers. Research limitations/implications: It would be better to conduct a survey on a bigger research trail in next edition. Practical implications: It is important to encourage enterprises through trainings and co-financing to implement an age management system, in particular when one can observe the demographic changes worldwide. Originality/value: The originality of the work is sought in an attempt to examine whether SMEs from the Poznań poviat take into account needs of older employees and adapt working conditions to them. Accordingly, the article analyzes the answers made by respondents according to four basic spheres of age management process. What is more, it suggests how to improve the issues badly assessed in the survey.

Purpose: This study aims at assessing the determinants of Social Media Marketing adoption in small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design / Method / Approach: The study seeks to understand the viewpoints and motives for employing social media campaigns. Thus, a structured quantitative questionnaire was provided to 150 respondents to assess social media marketing in their firms, using convenience sampling. A descriptive analysis of data was undertaken using the SPSS. Findings: The study's findings showed that most respondents agreed with items related to Social Media Marketing’s facilitating conditions, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and cost implications. Theoretical Implications: The study contributes to the extant literature on Social Media Marketing during the Covid-19 pandemic in the developing world, wherein poor infrastructure, bureaucracy and culture play an important role in business performance. Practical Implications: SMME owners and managers should encourage their employees and customers to use social media regularly in order to drive traffic towards the business. Originality / Value: The study is unique as it analyses Social Media Marketing during a turbulent time in which the Covid-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc on economies globally. Research Limitations / Future Research: Researchers should consider analysing the effect of Covid-19's lockdown restrictions on specific sectors in an attempt to facilitate tailor-made solutions to the problem. The idea of creating a new capital market instrument emerged from the concept of Capital Markets Union. It draws inspiration primarily from the very good experience of covered bonds, which provide a stable, long-term and relatively cheap source of financing banking activities, while contributing to building the stability of the financial system. European Secured Notes fulfill the aims of the Capital Markets Union by supporting the financing of small and medium enterprises, which are the backbone of the EU economy, and which have been particularly hard hit by the Covid-19 crisis. The identification of the requirements for the development of ESNs, presented in this article, fits with the needs of the recovery of the post-pandemic European economy.
Pomysł stworzenia nowego instrumentu rynku kapitałowego narodził się z idei unii rynków kapitałowych. Czerpie on inspirację przede wszystkim, z bardzo dobrego doświadczenia listów zastawnych, które zapewniają stabilne, długoterminowe i stosunkowo tanie źródło finansowania działalności bankowej, przyczyniając się jednocześnie do budowania stabilności systemu finansowego. Europejskie obligacje zabezpieczone realizują cele unii rynków kapitałowych wspierając finansowanie małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw, stanowiących trzon unijnej gospodarki a które zostały szczególnie dotknięte kryzysem wywołanym Covid-19. The main aim of the paper is to study the impact of the level of digitization of business activities on the human resources orientation on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach: During the research process, a survey was conducted among 140 SMEs in Poland at the beginning of 2020. The multiple regression model was built to find the link between the variables. Findings: Statistical analysis indicated that digitization did not have a clearly positive impact on employees’ orientation towards SCP. Among the analysed variables, negatively correlated relationships appeared, especially in the area of the digitization of contacts with the customers. Research limitations: As limitations, it can be pointed the managerial approach during survey research, limited research group, as well as the study period excluding pandemic time. Originality/value: The novelty of the research manifests itself in in the fact that the research problem was applied to the small and medium-sized enterprises, instead of to corporations.

Purpose: This study evaluates the acceptance of GPS/GPRS-based telematics technology in freight road transport companies registered in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The evaluation is based on a survey of 500 representative road transport companies carried out in 2020. The Technology Acceptance Model was estimated, and its results were checked for robustness. The scope of the information collected in telematics systems is defined in terms of its perceived utility and perceived ease of use at the operational management level. The latent factors affecting technology use are defined and implemented. Findings: Most respondents (80%) claimed that telematics systems had a considerable influence on the effectiveness and efficiency of the whole company's operation. It contributed to a higher number of orders executed per time unit, more effective use of the driver's working time, and increased the entrepreneurs' trust in the company. The companies employing more workers recognize the higher usefulness of telematics systems and are motivated to use the technology more widely than smaller enterprises. TAMs estimated separately for small and medium-sized enterprises did not significantly differ among the parameter estimates. Research limitations/implications: The Technology Acceptance Model is a useful analytical tool for evaluating telematics technology acceptance by the road transport sector. The study is based on a random sample of enterprises observed once in 2020. It is recommended to monitor them in two or three waves to compare the dynamics of the telematics usage process. It is planned to continue the study in that direction. Practical implications: The outcomes are valuable in practice twofold. Firstly, the extension of telematics systems use is interesting for final users, i.e., road transport companies that will find scope for their application. Secondly, the results are helpful for system providers who get knowledge on telematics perception from enterprise management. Originality/value: Although widely applied to other IT systems, the TAM model has not been used to evaluate the use of telematics in road transport companies. The paper justifies TAM's categories at the operational management level in road transport enterprises, contributing to understanding managers' behavioral aspects of decision-making.

Opis:
This study focused on how the ISO 9001:2008 standard has influenced organisational Lean Six Sigma (LSS) implementation success. Data were collected through a survey, followed by interviews with the quality managers/representatives of 85 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the textile industry. Additionally, case studies on four of the textile SMEs were carried out to validate the results. Our analysis revealed that the main benefits of LSS, among others, are problem solving improvement, reduction of the quality problem, waste reduction, and increase of productivity. However, certified companies are aware of continuous improvements to tools, which ensures the continuity of improvements made by the LSS project and facilitates the integration of Lean Six Sigma tools, which can help to make better use of the Lean Six Sigma project. The type of article produced was also found to have a considerable effect on the success of the Lean Six Sigma project.
