Opis:
M. Abrahamowicz has chosen as subject for examination five of Virginia Woolf's short stories out of the collection A Haunted House and Other Short Stories \ Perhaps it is not very fair on the writer to select, for a separate subject, just this part of her work which is avowedly not her best. The small volume of her short stories was published posthumously by her husband, Leonard Woolf, in 1943: in his Foreword to it, he calls the reader's attention to the unfinished state in which most of them were left at the writer's death (...)

Opis:
The short story cycle is a literary genre that has not yet attracted much critical attention. Many texts have not been classified as a cycle, others have not been interpreted thoroughly. The problem therefore offers a wide field to investigation. We conduct our research and interpretative attempts being fully aware of the fact that the limited material we can deal with makes it impossible to draw any generalizations. The article includes interpretations of short story cycles written at the beginning of the century (Chwile − ᾿Moments᾽ by Orzeszkowa, 1901; Modlitwa Pańska − ᾿Lord's Prayer᾽ by Zapolska, 1904; Zawody − ᾿Professions᾽ by Kaden-Bandrowski, 1911), between the two World Wars (Bezrobotny Lucyfer − ᾿Unemployed Lucifer᾽ by Wat, 1927; Drogi nieuniknione − ᾿Unavoidable Ways᾽ by Andrzejewski, 1936; Sanatorium pod klepsydrą − ᾿The Hourglass Sanatorium᾽ by B. Schulz, 1937), as well as contemporary texts (Zabezpieczanie śladów − ᾿Securing Evidence᾽ by W. Odojewski, 1984; Być i nie być − ᾿To Be and not to Be᾽ by L. Elektorowicz, 1993; Opowieści galicyjskie − ᾿Galician Stories᾽ by A. Stasiuk, 1995). The only conclusion that we can draw with certainty is that the short story cycle constitutes a genre which permits a particularly easy construction of symbolic, and thus metaphysical and religious, meanings.

The article is devoted to Boles"aw Prus’s nowel Jacob’s Dream (1875) – to the way it is received in a context different from the original one. Published for a second time in Evening stories (1895) it is a debate the author of The Doll holds with the positivist program of assimilation of the Jews. At the same time the author indicates the new possibilities Zionism gives. Prus tries to see the threats the Jewish nation will face when it will build its state. In many points Prus’s views remind of Theodor Herzl’s opinions. The article is also an attempt at showing the evolution of Boles"aw Prus’s attitude towards the so-called Jewish issue in the 19th century, which is to a large degree typical of his generation.

Also the protagonists of this philosophical tale may be interpretated as the archetypes of the Shadow and of the Person (in the context of the psychology of depth by Carl Gustav Jung). The particular importance has the hidden polemic between Zabuzhko and Lina Kostenko.

The paper analyses the short story collection titled Remnants written by the notable Danish author, Helle Helle. This work is characteristic of the contemporary minimalist movement, and is one of the most significant works of the 1990’s in Danish literature. The main point of the paper is the notion of absence and loss, which is treated as the work’s dominating principle. The paper attempts to prove that this governing principle of “absence and loss” both applies to the collection’s plot and its composition. Accordingly, several examples from the text are included to demonstrate the principle’s relevance.

Zofia Nałkowska
Opis:
Andrzej Brzozowski directed a live action short subject based on Zofia Nałkowska’s short story Aside of the Railway in 1963. The film was banned by the communist authorities and presented for the first time as late as in 1992. This is a story of runaway Jewish woman who jumped out of a train aiming at a concentration camp somewhere in Poland occupied by he Nazis. With a heavily wounded knee she lies aside of the railway looking at Polish countrymen who gathered near her and see no chance to help her as they fear of the Nazis. When she ask them not to carry her to Germans’ one of the onlookers shots her on the spot. Brzozowski made numerous modifications to present the tragic situation from the short story in film. One of them is the change of the point of view. In film it is the POV of the wounded woman, when in the short story it is presented by a witness who told the writer about the events only after the war. Brzozowski also changed the time of events from spring in the story to snowy winter in the film and focused on two main characters – the Jewish woman and the man who seemed most determined to help her and shot her in the end.

The introduction of co-payments for using health care services is a relatively new issue for most of the Central-Eastern European (CEE) countries. Some CEE countries, like Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic have similar experiences with the introduction of such co-payments. These fees were met with a cold reception by the population and also political resistance, which led to the abolishment of these payments in Slovakia as well as in Hungary. Our paper focuses on the experiences of Hungary, where co-payments for health care services were introduced in February, 2007 and abolished one year later as a result of a population referendum. Hungarian experiences can serve as a lesson for policy makers from other CEE countries to develop sustainable patient payment policies.

Director/writer/actor Roman Polanski is one of the central figures in the history of Film School in Łódź. This study provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to examine cinematic and artistic values of his early short films made between 1955 and 1961 in Poland and in France before his professional feature length debut “Knife in the Water” (1962). In his essential work Marek Hendrykowski looks at these nine shorts with in-depth analysis and adopts both historical and theoretical approach, making use of poetics terms, close reading method and socio-cultural interpretation. In its treatment of Polanski’s études this unique study discusses why these films are important in so many aspects and attracitve from many points of view and they have come to symbolise and represent modern cinema in Poland of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Opis:
There are two Polish translations of Andrić’s short story "U musafirhani". First one by Maria Znatowicz-Szczepańska was published in 1937. Second one by Alija Dukanović, Bosnian who settled and lived in Poland, was published in 1966. The story presents two Bosnians communities: Catholics and Muslims. The analysis of these two translations shows that the Catholic community is stonger in the Polish translations than in the original text. This tendency is more clear in Znatowicz-Szczepańska’s work. On the one hand the position of Catholics is much better and on the other hand their dependence on Muslims is smaller, as it was in real and as it is shown in Andrić’s pieace. In Dukanović’s translation there is a tendency to present Muslims in a better way as well. They are not so primitive, demanding and ruthless. Differences between translations corresponde with the context they were written. In the period between two world wars there was an antiphaty for the Muslim part of Bosnia which was treated as a dangerous element, warlike and communistlike. After The Second World War, during Communist times, rules unitarist ideology and it wasn’t coreect to emphasis civilizations, religious and national differences. It helps to understand both strategies of translations, why Marija Znatowicz-Szczepańska is very familiar with Catholics and very distanced from Muslims and at the same time why Alija Dukanović presents Muslims in a better way. Znatowicz-Szczepańska’s way of translation we can treat as domestication, Dukanović’s one as foreignization with strong element of the manipulation.

Opis:
This article proposes to read Iwaszkiewicz’s story titled Sérénité with more suspicion than it has been done in a traditional, usually enthusiastic reception of this prose. Firstly, the text presents typical approaches to interpretation. The main part of the article suggests certain textual qualities which may cause feel “discomfort” in the modern reader. According to the author of the paper, there is something anachronistic in the story. The story was written a long time ago and therefore the style of narration, the elements of camouflage and sophisticated tricks may seem inappropriate for such a serious subject as death. Also, the construction of the narrator and hero who is always passive, unwilling to act and focused on his inner life may today seem irritatingly anachronistic, oldfashioned and incomprehensible. These arguments are used to show that a critical analysis of the novel, due to new readers’ awareness, can surprisingly lead to interesting questions and open new paths of interpretation.
