Opis:
An original wireless sensor network for vibration measurements was designed. Its primary purpose is modal analysis of vibrations of large structures. A number of experiments have been performed to evaluate the system, with special emphasis on the influence of different effects on simultaneity of data acquired from remote nodes, which is essential for modal analysis. One of the issues is that quartz crystal oscillators, which provide time reading on the devices, are optimized for use in the room temperature and exhibit significant frequency variations if operated outside the 20–30°C range. Although much research was performed to optimize algorithms of synchronization in wireless networks, the subject of temperature fluctuations was not investigated and discussed in proportion to its significance. This paper describes methods used to evaluate data simultaneity and some algorithms suitable for its improvement in small to intermediate size ad-hoc wireless sensor networks exposed to varying temperatures often present in on-site civil engineering measurements.

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) require information about the geographical location of each sensor node. Self-organization and localization capabilities are one of the most important requirements in sensor networks. This paper provides an overview of centralized distance-based algorithms for estimating the positions of nodes in a sensor network. We discuss and compare three approaches: semidefinite programming, simulated annealing and two-phase stochastic optimization-a hybrid scheme that we have proposed. We analyze the properties of all listed methods and report the results of numerical tests. Particular attention is paid to our technique-the two-phase method-that uses a combination of trilateration, and stochastic optimization for performing sensor localization. We describe its performance in the case of centralized and distributed implementations.

The power boiler erection process requires temporary suspending of buckstays (Fig. 1). The aim of buckstays installation is to brace screens of combustion chamber. Suspending of buckstays is performed by means of strand jacks and steel rods. The amount, location and force ranges of each rods are modelled on the basis of static structural strength computations. In the paper the force sensor network incorporated into computer and wireless communication system designed to prevent overloading of the rods resulting from force asymmetry or computational faults is introduced and next subjected to optimization procedure. The operational data delivered by the network and recorded on the system hard drives let the authors perform the correlation analysis and linear regression to reduce the number of sensors. Thus two stage hierarchic algorithm which constructs the set of models for every single sensor and estimates their parameters, and then using genetic procedure minimizes a certain loss function to automate the sensor network optimization process is introduced. As a result, such investigation could significantly reduce cost of the whole system.

In this paper there is described the routing algorithm for wireless sensor networks. Energy consumption is very important for self-powered radio nodes. But in some applications energy balancing is more important. Wireless sensor networks used in large areas like farmlands or warehouses consist of hundreds of nodes. In classic methods routing is directed to short time of transmission or low energy consumption. But unbalanced energy consumption can often cause unpredictable failures because of lack of energy in frequently used nodes. Energy balancing prevents this behavior by dynamic bypassing the used nodes. The paper presents five methods for reducing energy consumption and a new method for energy balanced routing. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods are de-scribed. Fig. 1 shows the algorithm diagram. The performed simulations show almost four times smaller energy consumption deviation than the deviation in classic routing method. The energy balancing can be improved by changing the sequence of transmis-sion.

The work treats the problem of fault detection for processes described by partial differential equations as that of maximizing the power of a parametric hypothesis test which checks whether or not system parameters have nominal values. A simple node activation strategy is discussed for the design of a sensor network deployed in a spatial domain that is supposed to be used while detecting changes in the underlying parameters which govern the process evolution. The setting considered relates to a situation where from among a finite set of potential sensor locations only a subset of them can be selected because of the cost constraints. As a suitable performance measure, the Ds-optimality criterion defined on the Fisher information matrix for the estimated parameters is applied. The problem is then formulated as the determination of the density of gauged sites so as to maximize the adopted design criterion, subject to inequality constraints incorporating a maximum allowable sensor density in a given spatial domain. The search for the optimal solution is performed using a simplicial decomposition algorithm. The use of the proposed approach is illustrated by a numerical example involving sensor selection for a two-dimensional diffusion process.

Due to the severe damages of nuclear accidents, there is still an urgent need to develop efficient radiation detection wireless sensor networks (RDWSNs) that precisely monitor irregular radioactivity. It should take actions that mitigate the severe costs of accidental radiation leakage, especially around nuclear sites that are the primary sources of electric power and many health and industrial applications. Recently, leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms to RDWSNs is a promising solution due to its several pros, such as online learning and self-decision making. This paper addresses novel and efficient ML-based RDWSNs that utilize millimeter waves (mmWaves) to meet future network requirements. Specifically, we leverage an online learning multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithm called Thomson sampling (TS) to a 5G enabled RDWSN to efficiently forward the measured radiation levels of the distributed radiation sensors within the monitoring area. The utilized sensor nodes are lightweight smart radiation sensors that are mounted on mobile devices and measure radiation levels using software applications installed in these mobiles. Moreover, a battery aware TS (BATS) algorithm is proposed to efficiently forward the sensed radiation levels to the fusion decision center. BA-TS reflects the remaining battery of each mobile device to prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results ensure the proposed BA-TS algorithm’s efficiency regards throughput and network lifetime over TS and exhaustive search method.

Opis:
In a typical moving contaminating source identification problem, after some type of biological or chemical contamination has occurred, there is a developing cloud of dangerous or toxic material. In order to detect and localize the contamination source, a sensor network can be used. Up to now, however, approaches aiming at guaranteeing a dense region coverage or satisfactory network connectivity have dominated this line of research and abstracted away from the mathematical description of the physical processes underlying the observed phenomena. The present work aims at bridging this gap and meeting the needs created in the context of the source identification problem. We assume that the paths of the moving sources are unknown, but they are sufficiently smooth to be approximated by combinations of given basis functions. This parametrization makes it possible to reduce the source detection and estimation problem to that of parameter identification. In order to estimate the source and medium parameters, the maximum--ikelihood estimator is used. Based on a scalar measure of performance defined on the Fisher information matrix related to the unknown parameters, which is commonly used in optimum experimental design theory, the problem is formulated as an optimal control one. From a practical point of view, it is desirable to have the computations dynamic data driven, i.e., the current measurements from the mobile sensors must serve as a basis for the update of parameter estimates and these, in turn, can be used to correct the sensor movements. In the proposed research, an attempt will also be made at applying a nonlinear model-predictive-control-like approach to attack this issue.

The recent decades have seen the growth in the fields of wireless communication technologies, which has made it possible to produce components with a rational cost of a few cubic millimeters of volume, called sensors. The collaboration of many of these wireless sensors with a basic base station gives birth to a network of wireless sensors. The latter faces numerous problems related to application requirements and the inadequate abilities of sensor nodes, particularly in terms of energy. In order to integrate the different models describing the characteristics of the nodes of a WSN, this paper presents the topological organization strategies to structure its communication. For large networks, partitioning into sub-networks (clusters) is a technique used to reduce consumption, improve network stability and facilitate scalability.

In this paper a summary is given of the ongoing research at the Belgian Royal Military Academy in the field of mobile ad hoc networks in general and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in particular. In this study, all wireless sensor networks are based on the physical and the medium access layer of the IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area networks standard. The paper gives a short overview of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard in the beaconless mode together with a description of the sensor nodes and the software used throughout this work. The paper also reports on the development of a packet sniffer for IEEE 802.15.4 integrated in wireshark. This packet sniffer turns out to be indispensable for debugging purposes. In view of future applications on the wireless network, we made a theoretical study of the effective data capacity and compared this with measurements performed on a real sensor network. The differences between measurements and theory are explained. In case of geograph- ically meaningful sensor data, it is important to have a knowledge of the relative position of each node. In the last part of the paper we present some experimental results of positioning based on the received signal strength indicators (RSSI). As one could expect, the accuracy of such a method is poor, even in a well controlled environment. But the method has some potential.

Recently, forest fire monitoring system in wireless sensor networks has received much attention. The conventional scheme receives fire alert data quickly to inform about fire forest event. However, since two or more nodes may detect a fire, high priority fire detection data frequently collide. In this paper, a new forest fire monitoring system is proposed in order to reduce high priority fire detection data dropped rate, by specifying a high priority received data immediately after fire detection and just before the destruction by fire. Furthermore, the node only transmits high priority data to a node, which has a low possibility of destruction by fire for low end-to-end delay of high priority fire detection data. The simulation results show that proposed scheme can reduce high priority data dropped ratio and the end-to-end delay, and have less effect of wind direction compared with the conventional scheme.

Here, an ‘Augmented Chinese Remainder System’ is introduced that incorporates additional features to enforce a higher level of security to the aggregated data. The scheme provides inbuilt signature verification and eliminates the need for separate data validation algorithms. The method achieves data integrity and authentication simultaneously in addition to lossless data aggregation for the data forwarded from the Cluster Head to the Base Station. The aggregate contains the entire individual data from sensors in the encrypted form and the receiver deaggregates it to get the original data in full without any loss. The Augmented Chinese Remainder System can be extended to secure Multi-level Data Aggregation for WSN.

Wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASN) usually demand uninterrupted and reliable data transmissions and an efficient path from the source nodes to the destination nodes, thus ensuring reliable delivery of sensitive or critical data with the use of multipath routing protocols. This paper presents a novel agent-driven WASN relying on a set of static and mobile agents. In the proposed technique, the location address is functioned into the operating node and the destination node. Calculations of the midpoint between the operating and the destination nodes are followed by identifying the shortest path based on a reference axis, using a mobile agent and a location address. Such an approach aims to ensure maximum utilization of the communicating paths. Based on the information concerning partial topology of the network, the destination node computes the weight factor and multiple paths using node distances, energy ratios and efficiencies of specific links. Then, the destination node selects the appropriate path from the multiple paths available, to transmit the data. This article also analyzes the performance of the proposed system with various parameters taken into consideration and shows its efficiency in comparison to other existing techniques.

The setting considered relates to a situation where from among a finite set of potential sensor locations only a subset can be selected because of the cost constraints. As a suitable performance measure, the Ds-optimality criterion defined on the Fisher information matrix for the estimated parameters is applied. Then, the solution of a resulting combinatorial problem is determined based on the branch-and-bound method. As its essential part, a relaxed problem is discussed in which the sensor locations are given a priori and the aim is to determine the associated weights, which quantify the contributions of individual gauged sites. The concavity and differentiability properties of the criterion are established and a gradient projection algorithm is proposed to perform the search for the optimal solution. The delineated approach is illustrated by a numerical example on a sensor network design for a two-dimensional convective diffusion process.

Especially, the approaches of Industrie 4.0 and the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer high potential to implement condition monitoring solutions. The connection of several sensor data of components to the cloud allows the identification of anomalies or defect pattern, this information can be used for predictive maintenance and new data-driven business models in production industry. In order to defend the internal attacks launched by captured nodes and ensure the reliability of data aggregation, a secure data aggregation mechanism based on constrained supervision is proposed for wireless sensor network, which uses the advanced LEACH clustering method to select cluster heads. Then the cluster heads supervise the behaviors of cluster members and evaluate the trust values of nodes according to the communication behavior, data quality and residual energy. Then the node with the highest trust value is selected as the supervisor node to audit the cluster head and reject nodes with low trust values. Results show that the proposed mechanism can effectively identify the unreliable nodes, guarantee the system security and prolong the network life time.

This paper presents research, design and simulations of an energy efficient wireless sensor network. It describes a routing protocol designed for evenly energy consumption. There is shown how to simulate a network in the Scilab environment. The test wireless sensor network including a measurement station and construction of radio modules are presented. The radio modules consists of Texas Instruments/chipcon's CC1100 transceiver and Atmel's ATmega32 microcontroller. The network can join up to 65535 radio modules (16 bit addressing). The measurement station consists of programmable power supply, an oscilloscope, precise multimeters and a JTAG module. It allows measuring the current consumption in different working modes, checking the time of operations and controlling the radio system. This solution will be used in a wireless water meter network. The most important feature in this application is a long working time (up to 10 years). The even energy consumption should extend the network reliability and its time of work.

Urban noise is a main component in the deterioration of life quality for people in urban areas. This problem mainly affects those who periodically travel through high traffic areas. The first step in reducing environmental noise is to characterize the urban setting with acoustic metrology for its diagnosis and control. This document exposes the design, construction and characterization of a wireless urban noise measurement module. The device works as a low-cost node with the capacity to be replicated for the deployment of a network of wireless acoustic sensors that allows the elaboration of dynamic urban noise maps. Each module consists of an electrical autonomy system, a single board computer and a MEMS microphone. The project also includes the design of a web portal to display measurement results in real time. The low-cost system was calibrated and compared with a class 1 sound level meter used to measure urban noise in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). Global differences of less than 1 dB were obtained. Urban noise was measured near the National University of Tres de Febrero following guidelines of ISO 1996-2 standard. The performance obtained in the evaluation instance and the results of the comparison were satisfactory.

Opis:
Wireless Sensor Network consist of thousands sensor node which have limited Power, Computation, Sensing and Communication capabilities. Among all operation of Sensor Node, Wireless Communication consumes most of the energy. So it is necessary to decrease the number of packets transmitted through the network. Many Sensor Node could detect similar event, which increases the overall bandwidth utilization to transmit redundant data. Here Nodes computation is cheaper than communication in terms of energy. So the technique of Data Aggregation is applied to summarize data which decreases the amount of data transmitted in the network, which in turn increases the lifetime of the network. Many Data aggregation protocols are based on a structured approach which is suitable for data collection application. But maintenance of the structure is an extra overhead and this approach is not suitable for dynamic scenario. So we propose an ad-hoc data aggregation protocol for dynamic scenario mainly event based application.

Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) plays a vital role in the range-free localization of sensor nodes in a wireless sensor network and a good amount of research has been made in this regard. One important factor is the battery voltage of the nodes (i.e., the MICAz sensors) which is not taken into account in the existing literature. As battery voltage level performs an indispensable role for the position estimation of sensor nodes through anchor nodes therefore, in this paper, we take into a account this crucial factor and propose an algorithm that overcomes the problem of decaying battery. We show the results, in terms of more precise localization of sensor nodes through simulation. This work is an extension to [1] and now we also use neural network to overcome the localization errors generated due to gradual battery voltage drooping.

Sensor networks form a special group of distributed measurement systems that can be used to control a wide range of applications with strong requirements for packet delay minimization. This can be achieved by using appropriate algorithms responsible for packet routing. The study of communication delays show that architecture and protocols can be used to provide support for QoS in the sensor network applications. This problem is a major challenge for researchers. This paper presents a comparative analysis of selected routing algorithms and their impact on the packet delays in the work.

Energy consumption is one of the major challenges in wireless sensor networks, thus necessitating an approach for its minimization and for load balancing data. The network lifetime ends with the death of one of its nodes, which, in turn, causes energy depletion in and partition of the network. Furthermore, the total energy consumption of nodes depends on their location; that is, because of the loaded data, energy discharge in the nodes close to the base station occurs faster than other nodes, the model presented here, through using learning automata, selects the path appropriate for data transferring; the selected path is rewarded or penalized taking the reaction of surrounding paths into account. We have used learning automata for energy management in finding the path; the routing protocol was simulated by NS2 simulator; the lifetime, energy consumption and balance in an event-driven network in our proposed method were compared with other algorithms.

Together with increasing traction vehicle’s speed a need to maintain a traction network in an appropriate state rises. Constant monitoring and diagnostics is necessary, allows to detect unfavorable phenomenon deteriorating power receive quality e.g.: excessive wear of contact strips, incorrect vehicle’s trolley settings. One of the methods is to place acceleration sensor on overhead contact line. Waveform’s analysis should allow estimation of traction network – trolley system shape. Wireless network selection as sensor network communication medium bypasses necessity for electric insulation between network’s elements. The design has to take into an account low power usage and renewable sources energy harvesting methods. Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy as transmission medium was chosen. It is dedicated for customer marker, however its multiple advantages can be exploited in industrial sensors. In paper was presented design and realization of wireless sensor network to investigate the catenary line acceleration. Hardware and software solution was described. Opis:
The main aim of the paper is to develop a distributed algorithm for optimal node activation in a sensor network whose measurements are used for parameter estimation of the underlying distributed parameter system. Given a fixed partition of the observation horizon into a finite number of consecutive intervals, the problem under consideration is to optimize the percentage of the total number of observations spent at given sensor nodes in such a way as to maximize the accuracy of system parameter estimates. To achieve this, the determinant of the Fisher information matrix related to the covariance matrix of the parameter estimates is used as the qualitative design criterion (the so-called D-optimality). The proposed approach converts the measurement scheduling problem to a convex optimization one, in which the sensor locations are given a priori and the aim is to determine the associated weights, which quantify the contributions of individual gaged sites to the total measurement plan. Then, adopting a pairwise communication scheme, a fully distributed procedure for calculating the percentage of observations spent at given sensor locations is developed, which is a major novelty here. Another significant contribution of this work consists in derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimality of solutions. As a result, a simple and effective computational scheme is obtained which can be implemented without resorting to sophisticated numerical software. The delineated approach is illustrated by simulation examples of a sensor network design for a two-dimensional convective diffusion process.

IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines Physical (PHY) and Wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) layers for wireless sensor networks (WSN). In recent years, many types of wireless sensor networks have been developed based on this standard. Currently, probably the most popular implementation of the mentioned standard are wireless ZigBee networks. Moreover, ZigBee provides functions normally attributed to the higher layers of network protocol stack. Among those the most important functions are: routing of data, data encryption and providing redundancy connections between devices in the network. We present a slightly different approach to the construction of wireless sensor networks. This is the beginning of series of papers about implementation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and the previously mentioned expansion functions in the network, built with RFM wireless communication modules and ATmega processors. This paper describes the basics of compiling wireless connection and data transmission with using RFM modules. In addition, blocking and non-blocking types of connections between radio modules and ways to connect RFM modules with ATmega processors are described.

Localization is one of the oldest mathematical and technical problems that have been at the forefront of research and development for decades. In a wireless sensor network (WSN), nodes are not able to recognize their position. To solve this problem, studies have been done on algorithms to achieve accurate estimation of nodes in WSNs. In this paper, we present an improvement of a localization algorithm namely Gaussian mixture semi-definite programming (GM-SDP-2). GMSDP is based on the received signal strength (RSS) to achieve a maximum likelihood location estimator. The improvement lies in the placement of anchors through the Fuzzy C-Means clustering method where the cluster centers represent the anchors’ positions. The simulation of the algorithm is done in Matlab and is based on two evaluation metrics, namely normalized root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and cumulative distribution function (CDF). Simulation results show that our improved algorithm achieves better performance compared to those using a predetermined placement of anchors.

In a rectilinear route, a moving sink is restricted to travel either horizontally or vertically along the connecting edges. We present a new algorithm that finds the shortest round trip rectilinear route covering the specified nodes in a grid based Wireless Sensor Network. The proposed algorithm determines the shortest round trip travelling salesman path in a two-dimensional grid graph. A special additional feature of the new path discovery technique is that it selects that path which has the least number of corners (bends) when more than one equal length shortest round trip paths are available. This feature makes the path more suitable for moving objects like Robots, drones and other types of vehicles which carry the moving sink. In the prosed scheme, the grid points are the vertices of the graph and the lines joining the grid points are the edges of the graph. The optimal edge set that forms the target path is determined using the binary integer programming.

Opis:
Wireless sensor networks have attracted attention of researchers considering their abundant applications. One of the important issues in this network is limitation of energy consumption which is directly related to life of the network. One of the main works which have been done recently to confront with this problem is clustering. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present clustering method which performs clustering in two stages. In the first stage, it specifies candidate nodes for being head cluster with fuzzy method and in the next stage, the node of the head cluster is determined among the candidate nodes with cellular learning automata. Advantage of the clustering method is that clustering has been done based on three main parameters of the number of neighbors, energy level of nodes and distance between each node and sink node which results in selection of the best nodes as a candidate head of cluster nodes. Connectivity of network is also evaluated in the second part of head cluster determination. Therefore, more energy will be stored by determining suitable head clusters and creating balanced clusters in the network and consequently, life of the network increases.

Opis:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been used in numerous applications to remotely gather real-time data on important environmental parameters. There are several projects where WSNs are deployed in different locations and operate independently. Each deployment has its own models, encodings, and services for sensor data, and are integrated with different types of visualization/analysis tools based on individual project requirements. This makes it dicult to reuse these services for other WSN applications. A user/system is impeded by having to learn the models, encodings, and services of each system, and also must integrate/interoperate data from different data sources. Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) provides a set of standards (web service interfaces and data encoding/model specications) to make sensor data publicly available on the web. This paper describes how the SWE framework can be extended to integrate disparate WSN systems and to support standardized access to sensor data. The proposed system also introduces a web-based data visualization and statistical analysis service for data stored in the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) by integrating open source technologies. A performance analysis is presented to show that the additional features have minimal impact on the system. Also some lessons learned through implementing SWE are discussed.

This paper describes the idea and the implementation of the image detection algorithm, that can be used in integrated sensor networks for environment and traffic monitoring in urban areas. The algorithm is dedicated to the extraction of moving vehicles from real-time camera images for the evaluation of traffic parameters, such as the number of vehicles, their direction of movement and their approximate speed. The authors, apart from the careful selection of particular steps of the algorithm towards hardware implementation, also proposed novel improvements, resulting in increasing the robustness and the efficiency. A single, stationary, monochrome camera is used, simple shadow and highlight elimination is performed. The occlusions are not taken into account, due to placing the camera at a location high above the road. The algorithm is designed and implemented in pipelined hardware, therefore high frame-rate efficiency has been achieved. The algorithm has been implemented and tested in FPGA and ASIC.

Simple flooding algorithms are widely used in ad hoc sensor networks either for information dissemination or as building blocks of more sophisticated routing protocols. In this paper a percolation driven probabilistic flooding algorithm is proposed, which provides large message delivery ratio with small number of sent messages, compared to traditional flooding. To control the number of sent messages the proposed algorithm uses locally available information only, thus induces negligible overhead on network traffic. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed and the theoretical results are verified through simulation examples.

In wireless mobile sensor networks, periodic calculation of coverage is very important, since mobile sensors can be moved adequately to current needs, thus increasing the coverage. Those moves require the execution of navigation tasks. Global network central algorithms for those tasks are very costly regarding energy consumption and computational resources. Considerations presented herein pertain to the best algorithms for a network of numerous small mobile sensor nodes used for monitoring of large terrains. Localized algorithms suggested in this paper help calculate the coverage on-line and locally with the involvement of neighboring nodes only. Furthermore, localized collaborative navigation is presented. It enables yielding position estimation with no GPS use and ensures improvement rather than deterioration over time. It uses multi-sensor fusion algorithms based on optimization and a distributed iterative extended Kalman Filter.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are ad hoc and self-configuring networks having the possibility that any sensor node can connect or leave the network. With no central controller in WSN, wireless sensor nodes are considered responsible for data routing in the networks. The wireless sensor nodes are very small in size and have limited resources, therefore, it becomes difficult to recharge or replace the battery of the sensor nodes at far places. The present study focused on reducing the battery consumption of the sensor nodes by the deployment of the newly proposed Fault Tolerance Multipath Routing Protocol (MRP-FT) as compared with the existing Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol under particle swarm optimisation based fault tolerant routing (PSO-FT) technique. The proposed algorithm of MRP-FT-based on the dynamic clustering technique using Boltzmann learning of the neural network and the weights were adjusted according to the area of networks, number of nodes and rounds, the initial energy of nodes (E0), transmission energy of nodes (d

The major challenge in designing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to find tradeoff between the desired and contrary requirements for the lifetime, coverage or cost while coping with the computation, energy and communication constraints. This paper examines the optimal placement of nodes for a WSN. It is impossible to consider the deployment of the nodes separately from WSNs applications. We highlight the properties of WSNs applications that determine the placement problem. We identify and enumerate the various objectives that should be considered. The paper provides an overview and concentrates on multi-objective strategies, their assumptions, optimization problem formulation and results.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono oryginalne podejście do budowy sieci sensorowej i wizualizacji jej działania z użyciem przestrzennych typów danych.

Opis:
Over the last few years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have started to play more and more important role in civil and military applications. A typical sensor network consists of resource-constrained sensing nodes, which monitor environment and send the data to more powerful gateway nodes. The goal of gateway nodes is to aggregate, process and send the data to other gateways or directly to sink nodes. The proper placement of nodes is needed to provide good network operation. Sensing nodes are often placed in a random manner unlike gateways. Gateways, due to their role and cost, are installed rather in a controlled way. In this paper, a bi-criteria gateway placement problem is introduced. The problem is shown to be NP-hard. We formulate it as a linear programming problem, then we develop the Multi-criteria Simulated Allocation (MSAL) heuristic algorithm, for the purpose of cost-effective gateway deployment and power-effective wireless connection management. Finally, we evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm by comparison with the exact method.

Results demonstrate that in comparison to linear approximation techniques, indirect mapping with EKMs provide fluid control and feedback mechanisms by operating in a continuous sensory control space – thus enabling interactive detection and optimization of events in real-time environments.

Disorders of the heart and blood vessels are the leading cause of health problems and death. Early detection of them is extremely valuable as it can prevent serious incidents (e.g. heart attack, stroke) and associated complications. This requires extending the typical mobile monitoring methods (e.g. Holter ECG, tele-ECG) by introduction of integrated, multiparametric solutions for continuous monitoring of the cardiovascular system. In this paper we propose the wearable system that integrates measurements of cardiac data with actual estimation of the cardiovascular risk level. It consists of two wirelessly connected devices, one designed in the form of a necklace, the another one in the form of a bracelet (wrist watch). These devices enable continuous measurement of electrocardiographic, plethysmographic (impedance-based and optical-based) and accelerometric signals. Collected signals and calculated parameters indicate the electrical and mechanical state of the heart and are processed to estimate a risk level. Depending on the risk level an appropriate alert is triggered and transmitted to predefined users (e.g. emergency departments, the family doctor, etc.).

Opis:
In the 21st century wireless sensor networks have gained much popularity due to their flexibility. This progress has enabled the use of sensor nodes on an unprecedented scale and opened new opportunities for the so-called ubiquitous computerization. The total freedom of nodes distribution within the wireless network, where the wireless characteristic is one of the greatest advantages of the use of wireless sensor networks, implies its greatest weakness, i.e. the limitation of mobile power sources. To overcome this challenge specialized routing protocols, such as LEACH, were ushered in for making the effective use of the energy of the nodes themselves. The purpose of this article is to show how the life of a sensor network depends on the number of nodes equipped with a mobile limited power source.

The paper describes an idea and realization of a system for collecting and processing data from different types of wireless distributed sensors. The system consists of wireless sensor networks. Each network consists of a server connected to the Internet and theoretically unlimited number of clients. The described server has been built with two types of microcomputers. It provides tools for data collecting and processing. A client, described in Section 5, can be implemented on any PC (Personal Computer) with Windows or Linux including the Raspberry PI and any other microcomputer with HDMI joint. It allows providing an interactive signboard. The data coming from a wireless measuring unit is stored in the server. Two versions of the measuring unit (Section 6) were developed. They differ in wireless modules (compared in Section 2). The first solution uses XBee-PRO 868. The second one uses CC-2530 working in ISM 2.4GHz band. The coverage comparison of both solutions is presented in Section 7. The system can be adjusted to measure any environmental value starting with temperature, humidity and ending with more advanced like the chemical composition of air. There is also included comparison with existing commercial solutions.
