Opis:
In the following article I present my own concept for interpreting Seneca’s Phaedra, demonstrating that the action takes place in three distinct settings: that of the royal palace (DOMUS), which is the domain of Phaedra’s actions, that of the city of Athens (URBS), which is the realm of Theseus and the Nurse, and that of the forest (SILVAE), which constitutes the world of Hippolytus. In the second part of the article I propose to arrange the stage in a way that takes the proposed settings into account.

Opis:
In the present article I discuss the remarkable fact that many of the motifs to be found in Seneca’s tragedies – such as a horrible death, a madman, an obsession or some supernatural agent – are also to be found in abundance in the work of “Gothic” authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Edgar Allan Poe. Indeed, these motifs are now commonly considered to be the hallmark of the Gothic genre. I also analyse some of the techniques which Seneca uses in order to arouse fear and stimulate the reader’s imagination, comparing them with those used by Poe and other Gothic writers.

Opis:
Lucius Annaeus Seneca, called the Younger or Philosopher, is the most important figure of the Roman Imperial Period. This Stoic philosopher made a lasting contribution to Stoicism. Seneca lived during difficult times and he was engaged in politics during the reign of his disciple, Cesar Nero. Seneca agrees with earlier Stoics, that God is corporeal and is a part of the world. Seneca discusses virtue as the ideal of “becoming like God” and thinks, that the virtuous man is an equal to the God. So he claims, that we have to learn virtues. However in this case we have the help of God, who gives us the intellect when we are born. Seneca reminds, that the life is not easy and only the indications of the philosophy concerning virtue preserve from the unjust fortune.

Opis:
Seneca’s philosophical writings concern a virtue, among others also the virtues of justice, temperance (or moderation), fortitude and prudence. They are four virtues from the time of St. Ambrose called cardinal. Seneca gives this definition of the virtue temperantia: “cupiditates refrenare” – to confine one’s desires. So the temperance is practising self-control, abstention and moderation. Seneca discuses it very often in a wider context of the different virtues, with which it’s tightly connected according to a stoical idea of the inseparability of the virtues. He claims that we have to learn virtue. Seneca reminds that life is not easy and only the indications of the philosophy concerning virtue preserve from the unjust fortune.

Opis:
One of the most important themes in the literary legacy of Seneca, a Roman stoic philosopher and tutor of young Nero, is the science on virtues. Withing its aretology there is the virtue of prudence, prudentia, whose definition is: facienda providere. By way of example, we may understand it as predicting the effects of, for instance, enacting a specific law. The virtue of prudentia refers also to proper counseling, actually in different situations: prudentia suaserit; it recommends to make good use of present times, to care for the future, think and deliberate. To live prudently means to live for the moment, to take advantage of our life time of in a good way.

Opis:
The author of this article discusses the question to what extent Lucius Annaeus Seneca – born in Hispania, and today exceptionally venerated in this country as a precursor of the “Spanish” mentality – felt he belonged to this land, and to what extent his feelings towards it were expressed in his writings. An analysis of his creative output leads to the conclusion that he felt little affection for the land of Hispania, since in his writings there are almost no references to it, and perhaps the only trace of his connection with his native country is his youthful epigram Ad Cordubam, in which, however, he shows more warmth towards himself than towards the city. The perceived lack of any more significant declarations of “Spanish” nationality, however, does not so much testify to his pettiness as to his stoic distance from the ethnic and political barriers that divide the community of mankind that constitutes a whole for him.
