Opis:
Introduction: Knowledge about the physiology of a healthy middle ear is essential for understanding the activity and mechanics of the ear as well as the basics of ossiculoplasty. Trauma of the epithelial lining of the tympanic cavity as well as the ossicular chain may be the result of chronic inflammation and surgery. Depending on the observed changes of the middle ear lining, there are several types of distinguished chronic inflammatory changes: simple, with cholesteatoma, with the formation of inflammatory granulation tissue, in course of specific diseases. Purpose: The aim of the article is presentation of the microstructure and vasculature of the ossicular chain in the Scanning Electron Microscope. Particular attention is drawn to the anatomical aspects of the structure and connections of auditory ossicles as vital elements for reconstruction of the conduction system of the middle ear. Material and method: The analysis covered auditory ossicles standardly removed in accordance with the methodology of the investigated surgical procedures. The preparations were evaluated in a scanning electron microscope. Results: The exposure of bone surface promotes deep erosion. The advanced process of destruction of bone surface in the case of chronic otitis media correlates with a significant degree of damage to both the lining covering the auditory ossicles and that surrounding articular surfaces. Conclusions: (1) The ossicles in the image of the Scanning Electron Microscope are covered with lining. It passes from the surface of the ossicles to the vascular bundles, forming vascular sheaths; (2) Damage to lining continuity on the surface of the auditory ossicles promotes the rapid destruction of bone tissue in the inflammatory process; (3) The dimensions of the individual ossicles are respectively: malleus – 8.36 +/- 0.01, incus – 8.14 +/- 0.0, stapes – 3.23 +/- 0.01 mm. Behavior of the anatomical length of ossicular chain during tympanoplasty appears to be essential to maintaining adequate vibration amplitude of the conductive system of the middle ear.

Opis:
Microscopic technology has recently flourished, allowing unparalleled viewing of microscopic elements invisible to the normal eye. Still, the existence of unavoidable constraints led on many occasions to have low contrast scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images. Thus, a noncomplex multiphase (NM) algorithm is proposed in this study to provide better contrast for various SEM images. The developed algorithm contains the following stages: first, the intensities of the degraded image are modified using a two-step regularization procedure. Next, a gamma-corrected cumulative distribution function of the logarithmic uniform distribution approach is applied for contrast enhancement. Finally, an automated histogram expansion technique is used to redistribute the pixels of the image properly. The NM algorithm is applied to natural-contrast distorted SEM images, as well as its results are compared with six algorithms with different processing notions. To assess the quality of images, three modern metrics are utilized, in that each metric measures the quality based on unique aspects. Extensive appraisals revealed the adequate processing abilities of the NM algorithm, as it can process many images suitably and its performances outperformed many available contrast enhancement algorithms in different aspects.

Opis:
In this study, the effects of using different ratios of fly ash on hydration products as well as the mechanical and microstructural properties of hardened concrete were investigated. Portland cement was replaced with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% fly ash (FA) by weight. The microstructural properties of the obtained samples were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fly ash has negative effect on 7 days concrete strength; however, it was seen that fly ash increases the compressive strength of 28 and 90 days concrete. The XRD analysis showed that the ratio of calcium hydroxide (CH), which is produced by hydration, decreases depending on the concrete age and the amount of fly ash. The SEM analysis showed that the usage of fly ash decreases gaps and increases C-S-H which is also a hydration production. When Portland cement was replaced with 10% fly ash by weight, compressive strength has increased and microstructure of concrete has improved. The reason for this is filling of gaps by fly ash and the decrease in the amount of Ca(OH)2 due to the reaction between fly ash and Ca(OH)2. Within this scope, the development in microstructure of fly ash concrete was evaluated in 90 days duration and a change of the development with compressive strength was investigated.

Opis:
The surfaces of rhabdosomes in dendroid and tuboid graptolites and in Mastigograptus were investigated with SEM. In general the surfaces are remarkably smooth and essentially featureless, even around the apertures. The only exception are subparallel rollers recognized on one specimen of Dictyonema sp., which pass at places into accumulations producing a reticulated network. The evidence available indicates a foreign nature these structures which cannot be considered units of secretion of graptolite cortex. The opinion is advanced that the recent data are suggestive of collagen fibrillogenesis occuring immediately adjacent to the surface coat of epithelial cells. The lack of bandages in sessile graptolites and the lack of foreign agglutinated material on their rhabdosomes, the intimate control of fibrillogenesis by epithelial cells in extracellular secretion of collagen are all presented as evidence in favour of the membrane model of graptolite periderm secretion.
Zbadano powierzchnię rabdozomów graptolitów dendroidowych, tuboidowych i Mastigograptus sp. za pomocą skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego. Wykazano, iż w zasadzie powierzchnie te są zupełnie gładkie, nawet w okolicach apertur. Tylko u jednego okazu Dictyonema sp. zaobserwowano na perydermie obecność niemal równoległych wałków występujących parami. Uzyskane wyniki wykluczają możliwość interpretowania tych wałków jako jednostek sekrecyjnych korteksu graptolitów. Wyraźnie gładkie, pozbawione „bandaży” powierzchnie rabdozomów graptolitów osiadłych ostro kontrasują z coeneciami Cephalodiscida, pokrytymi zazwyczaj obcymi ciałami przywierającymi do ich lepkiej powierzchni.

Structural changes within the placenta are observed in the course of pathological pregnancy. The aim of the study was to perform initial assessment of morphological features of placenta. The analysis was conducted by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Samples of placenta of women who delivered neonates appropriate for gestational age were characterized by a homogenous surface texture with natural corrugation. The surface of IUGR placenta from the group of mothers with pregnancy induced hypertension was definitely heterogeneous - noticeable swelling of tissue surface was observed. Samples from LGA group also demonstrated a number of surface bulges and heterogeneities which were, nonetheless, characterized by a certain repeatability.

Opis:
Scanning electron microscopy was employed for the investigation of bacteria living on sand grains in a sandy marine beach in the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic Sea). Bacteria colonize the sand grains; individual topography and shape of the grains were decisive for the colonization. Grains of diverse topography characterised by a great irregularity of shape were preferred, and protected surface sites were favoured. Many of the attached bacteria were found to produce polymer secretions; entire colonies attached by means of polymer nets were observed. A significant morphological diversity of bacteria in the vertical profile of the beach was determined. Bacteria inhabiting the sand grains showed the ability to reproduces.
Badania te wykazały, że bakterie maja zdolność do selektywnego kolonizowania ziaren piasku preferując głównie osłonięte i nieregularne powierzchnie (szpary, szczeliny, wklęśnięcia, fałdy, rysy).

The oligotrichid ciliate Strombidium coronatum (Leegaard, 1915) Kahl, 1932 is redescribed from plankton samples taken in the Irish Sea, using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy. The species is characterized by a conspicuous, uniquelly shaped peristome, which is flat and roughly triangular and extends in the sagittal plane. The Irish Sea specimens measure ~ 45 × 25 µm in vivo and ~ 40 × 24 µm after protargol impregnation. The girdle kinety is equatorial, ostensibly continuous, and composed of ~ 100 dikinetids. The ventral kinety extends longitudinally on the posterior fifth of the cell and is composed of about five dikinetids. The adoral zone of membranelles is widely open and composed of ~ 18 collar and ~ 12 buccal membranelles; the collar portion is disconnected from the buccal portion. The shape and orientation of the opisthe’s adoral zone of membranelles are apparently extraordinary, i.e., the membranelles form an inverted L-shaped stripe extending longitudinally in the elongated posterior cell portion of dividers.

Opis:
This study investigated the adsorption of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn) as single or mixed pollutants from aqueous solutions. Ash from gasification of poultry feathers was used as the adsorbent. Batch experiments were performed at an adsorbent dosage of 1g·L-1, an adsorption time of 2h and an agitation speed of 100 rpm. In each variant, the total concentration of individual metals or their mixture was assumed to be around 500mg·L-1. The morphology and composition of ash before and after adsorption were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The ash was rich in Ca, P and Si. Diffraction revealed the presence of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and calcium phosphate hydroxide. Microscopy confirmed the presence of Cd, Cu, and Zn on the ash surface after adsorption. Adsorption efficiency was higher for single metals than for their mixture. Spectroscopy revealed changes in ash composition that could be related to the mechanism of metal adsorption. Taking into account the high initial concentrations of metals, ash from poultry feathers is an attractive option for metal removal from wastewater.

Opis:
Introduction: Functional and aesthetic problems can arise even from small losses created in the facial skeleton. Injuries and oncological surgeries are the most frequent causes of these losses within the facial skeleton. Advances in surgical interventions have allowed for ever-increasing degrees of resections, increasing oncological radicality as well as treatment effectiveness, providing the patient with the chance for a longer life. However, this subsequently requires the use of even more advanced reconstruction techniques in order to restore quality of life and comfort to the patient, as well as enable their return to professional and social activities. The necessity of reconstructive surgery applies not only to patients with cancer, but also to patients with impaired or failing sensory and organ function as a result of inflammatory conditions, injuries, or non-oncological surgeries. There are many available reconstruction procedures, which depend on the location of the loss, the type of tissue lost, the degree of loss and patient-dependent factors. Materials used in reconstruction surgeries may include the patients’ tissues when available, and artificial reconstruction materials otherwise. Material and methods: The analysis involved fragments of bone tissue removed during surgery. Due to the nature of the medical procedure and the inability to replant the tissue, it was regarded as medical waste. The preparations used were observed under an optical microscope and an electron scanning microscope, and a chemical analysis was performed. The chemical composition of samples was analysed using a low vacuum detector (LVD) at an accelerating voltage of 15 kV and 10 kV and at a spot size of 4 and 3.5. The observations were performed in a secondary electron (SE) detection system. Results: Observation of parameters under an optical microscope and of images obtained using an electron scanning microscope showed the presence of typical, compact bone tissue with varied surface shapes in each case (various degrees of unevenness and porosity). Chemical composition analysis confirmed the presence of compounds from the CaO-P2O5-H20 system. The Ca/P (calcium/phosphorus) ratio obtained from the chemical analysis varied from 1.33 to 2.1, and indicated a varied morphology of calcium phosphates forming the bone structures of the facial skeleton. Conclusions: 1. Calcium phosphates are characterised by excellent biocompatibility because of their chemical affinity to bone, and are ideal for the reconstruction of bone losses within the facial skeleton. 2. Biodegradable polymers have the highest functional potential among several groups of biomaterials used in tissue engineering because of their ability to be tailored individually, in addition to their high biocompatibility.

Opis:
Destruction of facades is a complex process in which technical material changes its properties, and which is caused by depositing biological agents. The examination of biofilms from building facades is difficult because sampling for tests may result in the damage to the structure of the facade's material. Also biological analysis of the material obtained from a biofilm is arduous. Some species of microorganisms are impossible to be isolated and their pure cultures cannot be cultivated in laboratory conditions. It is multispecies cultures that most frequently develop on the surfaces of the facade's technical material. Clustered in a group, they cooperate with each other and reveal different features than single cells. It is essential to identify organisms present in the biofilms, since they may initiate deterioration processes. The aim of the research was the observation of the biofilm, collected from two facades, in a micrometer scale with the see of a scanning electron microscope.

Opis:
Natural fibrous materials have been studied to address noise and high heat indices, but many of the existing studies about natural fibers do not sufficiently support their claims of better acoustical and heat insulating materials. Thus, this study investigated the surface morphology of easily available agricultural materials such as coconut husks, banana pseudostem and sugarcane husk for their potential as sound absorbers and thermal insulators. Fiber pads from the materials were constructed and analyzed for noise reduction coefficients, thermal insulating performance, water absorbing capacity and flame tolerance - using the methods specified in the American Society for Testing Materials. Herein, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied for analytical imaging of the agricultural materials. Noise reduction coefficients (0.80 dB and 0.92 dB), (0.75d B and 0.78 dB) and (0.50 dB and 0.35 dB) each at 800 Hz and 440 Hz, and heat reductions of 2.56 °C, 1.71 °C, and 1.24 °C were obtained from coconut husk, sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem, respectively. The coconut husk also gave the highest water absorbing capacity and high flame tolerance of 56%, compared to that of sugarcane husk (49%) and banana pseudostem (32.67%). The morphology of the coconut husk, after SEM application revealed more diverse microporous cells with varying shapes and sizes compared to that of sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem. Thus, results indicate that porosity affects the noise and heat reduction indices of the fibers. The more porous the material is, the better its potential as sound absorber and thermal insulator.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate and compare the association between biofilm assembly on adenoids and the incidence of recurrent infections in a paediatric population submitted to adenoidectomy by either infectious or non-infectious indication. METHODS: Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess biofilms on adenoid surface; biofilm assembly in vitro was monitored by crystal violet assay; antibiotic susceptibility was assessed following EUCAST guidelines; Hinfluenzae capsular typing was performed by PCR. RESULTS: Biofilms were present in 27.4% of adenoid samples and no statistical difference was found between infectious and non-infectious groups. In vitro, the most clinically relevant bacteria, H.influenzae, S.aureus, S.pyogenes, S.pneumoniae and M.catarrhalis, were mostly moderate biofilm assemblers (71.7%). 55.3% of these bacteria were intermediate/resistant to at least one of the tested antibiotics. No association was found between the ability to assemble biofilms in vitro and the presence of biofilms on adenoids nor antibiotic resistance. All H.influenzae were characterized as non-typeable. CONCLUSION: The presence of biofilms on adenoid surface was independent from clinical sample background. Bacterial ability to assemble biofilms in vitro cannot be used to predict biofilm assembly in vivo. The lack of correlation between biofilm formation and infectious respiratory diseases found contributes to question the relevance of biofilms on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases.

Opis:
The authors examined the possible use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for polymeric nanofiltration membranes testing. The analysis of results allowed us to conclude that SEM technique is useful for the determination of the construction of “skin” and the support layer of nanofiltration polymeric membranes and that Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS, EDX) provides “average” data from both layers.
W pracy zweryfikowano możliwość zastosowania skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego do badania polimerowych membran nanofiltracyjnych.

The phase composition of the El Hammami meteorite was investigated by X-ray, magnetostatic, Mössbauer effect and environmental scanning electron microscopy methods. Performed investigations indicated that this meteorite consists of aluminosilicates, olivine (Mg,Fe)2SiO4, pyroxene (Ca,Mg,Fe)SiO3, kamacite (bcc Fe-Ni alloy) and troilite (FeS). Some inclusions of Ti and Cr were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The concentration of Ni in kamacite was determined by comparison of the Mössabauer spectra of Fe-Ni phase in the meteorite with those for synthetic bcc Fe-Ni alloys (5, 10, 25% Ni).

Opis:
Comparative studies of subaleurone and inner endosperm cells of dry mature caryopses from 8 low-protein and 7 high-protein varieties of rye, grown in similar conditions of isolated collection, were performed by means of scanning electron microscopy technique. Low protein varieties contained starch granules differentiated in the diameter embedded in the less dense protein matrix of the wide subaluerone region. High protein varieties, besides the larger aleurone cells had in some examples wider subaluerone layer with the dense protein matrix, which was very regular and less packed with starch granules. The inner endosperm cells of high-protein caryopses contained much more dense protein matrix all around the starch granules in contrast to low-protein caryopses, which were tightly packed with starch and had only a thin layer of protein matrix around them. Comparative pronase treatment of low- and high-protein rye caryopses confirmed the above observations. No granular protein bodies in any cells, besides the aleurone ones, could be observed.
Przeprowadzono badania porównawcze ilości i rozmieszczenia składników białkowych komórek warstw podaleuronowych i głębszych warstw endospermy w suchych, dojrzałych ziarniakach 8 niskobiałkowych i 7 wysokobiałkowych odmian żyta (tab.), wyhodowanych w 1974/75 r. w Skierniewicach i 1976/77 r. w Powsinie w identycznych warunkach izolowanej kolekcji zachowawczej z wykorzystaniem skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego (SEM). W odmianach niskobiałkowych ziarna skrobiowe o zróżnicowanej średnicy były zatopione w grubej warstwie matrycy białkowej w komórkach cienkiej warstwy podaleuronowej (fot. 1, 2, 3). Porównawcze trawienie pronazą skrawków ziarniaków odmian nisko- i wysokobiałkowych (fot.8) potwierdziło powyższe twierdzenia. Nie zauważono w komórkach innych niż aleuronowe granularnych ciał białkowych w żadnej z badanych odmian żyta.

Opis:
There are no papers examining the labellar micromorphology in Malaxidinae in detail. The aim of this paper is to present the results of labellar micromorphology of our studies on Malaxidinae. The micromorphology of nine species was examined and described (calli, nectaries, OP structures, concavities). These species are divided into six groups of which the lip morphology probably represents different forms of attracting and rewarding pollinators. Group one consists of Disticholiparis gregaria and Platystyliparis aurita with characteristic globular nectary and pad-like callus. The second group with Liparis nervosa has two conelike convexities. The third one is represented by Liparis sutupensis with spread lip, the basal callus, and the epichile often eroding with age. The fourth group (Stichorkis cespitosum) has a massive hypochil with basal callus and delicate epichil. The fifth group (Microstylis ophioglossoides, Dienia ophrydis) is characterized by a lip with developed lateral lobes, three deep concavities in the middle part, an erect callus, and many raphide cells.Crepidium cf. rheedii and Crepidium dryadum from the sixth group have a three-lobed lip with entire or toothed mid-lobe, basal callus, cavity surrounded by a rim and OP structures with raphide cells. We also emphasized the different way and place of nectar secretion in the subtribe and gave some suggestions about pollination strategies.

Opis:
The use of porous materials is enjoying tremendous popularity and attention of the advance scientific communities due to their excellent adsorptive and catalytic activities. Clays are one of the most important candidates in the porous community which shows the above mentioned activities after modifing with a different intercalating agent. The paper is focused on the infiuence of some inorganic intercalating agents (NaOH) on the morphology of the variously intercalated clay samples. The alkali metal was used as the inorganic intercalating agent. The effect of intercalation temperature, intercalation agent concentration and intercalation time on the pre-baked clay morphology were also part of the study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study was performed to evaluate the morphological changes of the resultant intercalates. Different morphological properties were improved significantly in the case of the inorganically modified clay samples. Thus, such intercalations are suggested to be effective if the clays under study are to be used for different industrial process at elevated conditions.

Opis:
The cracking of materials and fracture surface is of great practical and academic importance. Over the last few years the development of the fractography of crystalline alloys resulted in a useful tool for the prediction or failure analysis. Many attempts have been made to observe cracks using optical microscopy, X-ray topography and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Of these techniques, the resolution of optical microscopy and X-ray topography is too poor. By contrast, the resolution of TEM is high enough for detailed information to be obtained. However, in order to apply TEM observations, a thin foil specimen must be prepared, and it is usually extremely difficult to prepare such a specimen from a pre-selected region containing a crack. In the present work, deformation mechanisms fracture surfaces of Ni-based metallic glass samples have been studied by specially designed experiments. In order to study the deformation mechanisms and fracture the Ni-based metallic glasses have been investigated in the tensile test. The structure and fracture surfaces after the decohesion process in tensile tests were observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The studies of structure were performed on thin foils. Moreover the investigated tape was subjected to a banding test. Then, the tape was straightened and the thin foil from the area of maximum strain was prepared. This thin foil sample was deformed before the TEM investigation to obtain local tears.
