This paper is a simple account of my teaching experience1, the aim of which is to answer the question: “How can we successfully teach interactionism, labeling theory, grounded theory and other sociological bases related to qualitative methods with the active participation of students?”. Through the examples of sociologists working in the Chicago Tradition, French sociologists working with Pierre Bourdieu, and other examples from American sociology, I show that sociological work is group activity. It is argued in this paper, that to make sociological thinking understandable to students teachers may do well to contextualize key theorists in their narrative/biographical context. The students learn, that sociologists are not magicians or genius individuals who produce attractive theories. Rather, they work in collaboration with other humans to generate knowledge. Moreoever, I demonstrate that sociologists’ contributions are often strongly related to and influenced by their broader life context.

Sociology of the economy and economic sociology both can be used as a name for specific subdisciplines of sociology. In this paper, by introducing theory of socioeconomic structuralism, I off er a solution that may reconcile the supporters of both competing concepts. I claim that fruitless competition may be avoided through demarcating respective areas of interest. Th e sociology of the economy could be defined as a sociological view of the economic structure, which could also cover the issues of interest socioeconomics, i.e. the impact of non-economic factors on economic phenomena and processes. Whereas economic sociology would deal with the impact of economic structures on non-economic spheres of social life. In this article, I will thoroughly examine two well-known concepts: Homans's theory of exchange and Becker's economic sociology and through their critical analysis I will define my proposals.

The name of maritime sociology has been present in the Polish scientific discourse for some decades now. In the text the author proves that in the world scientific literature the caption is not present but there are many publications which refer to sociological research on maritime issues. The author concentrates on exploring how ‘sociology of maritime issues’ is conceptualized in academic journals articles. Records (including abstracts and in some cases full texts) of over two hundred and fifty articles published in 1933−2014 available through EBSCO databases were analyzed. The author addresses the problems discussed in them comparing the approaches to Polish maritime sociology as developed by professor Ludwik Janiszewski.

The paper discusses a relatively unknown variant of practical sociology defined as clinical sociology, which consists first, in an analysis and assessment of a situation, and then, a solution of the problem by way of intervention, ultimately leading to the improvement in the quality of life of members of the community. The objectives of clinical sociology assume close collaboration with its addressees with a simultaneous access of all interested parties to the information about the projects and its results (partners’ relations). Once information is obtained in the course of a sociological analysis, the chances of meeting the overload are calculated and a specific problem-solving plan is developed, followed by an implementation of a corrective plan. In this way sociology assists in outlining the promoted or protective areas and helps local authorities to allocate the available budget for rational use as well as implementation of necessary measures and specific ‘rescue’ programmes (also outside the public sector). It is postulated to make clinical sociology an attractive career path, generating employment of sociology graduates on the job market.
Artykuł omawia mało znany interwencyjny wariant socjologii praktycznej, określany mianem socjologii klinicznej, która obejmuje analizę i ocenę sytuacji, a następnie redukcję (rozwiązanie) problemów w drodze interwencji, prowadzącą do poprawy jakości życia członków społeczności. Cele interwencji socjologii klinicznej zakładają jej realizację w ścisłej współpracy z adresatami przedsięwzięć (jednostkami, instytucjami, decydentami i zasobami wsparcia społecznego), przy równoczesnym szerokim dostępie wszystkich zainteresowanych do informacji o przedsięwzięciu i uzyskanych rezultatach (planowanie partnerskie). Po uzyskaniu za pośrednictwem analizy socjologicznej informacji szacowane są szanse sprostania przeciążeniom oraz przygotowywany jest plan, jak konkretny problem/sytuację rozwiązać oraz czy i jak wprowadzać określone programy korekcyjne. W ten sposób socjolog ułatwia partnerom społecznym/administracji publicznej wyznaczenie obszarów promowanych i chronionych w polityce lokalnej/krajowej/regionalnej, a dysponentom środków publicznych sugeruje adekwatne do potrzeb nakłady na realizację konkretnych programów i racjonalne wykorzystanie zasobów (także poza sektorem publicznym). Autor postuluje, by socjologia kliniczna stała się atrakcyjną, praktyczną ścieżką kariery zawodowej, wzmacniającą pozycję absolwentów studiów magisterskich, doktoranckich i podyplomowych na rynku pracy.

Two books edited by Kevin Young (2016, 2017) present the global landscape of the sociology of sport. The authors give the characteristic of this subdiscipline in their countries. The statements are based on some common key question. But there is a lack of Poland in these analysis. Thus, this text delivers the brief description of sociology of sport in Poland. The review is focused on its three aspects: the past, the present and the future.
W dwóch wydanych niedawno publikacjach pod redakcją Kevina Younga (2016, 2017) przedstawiony został światowy pejzaż socjologii sportu. Autorzy poszczególnych rozdziałów tej publikacji, reprezentujący różne państwa, zostali poproszeni o opisanie rodzimego statusu tej subdyscypliny w oparciu o zbiór pytań kluczowych dla jej scharakteryzowania. Wśród analizowanych krajów nie pojawia się jednak Polska. Niniejszy tekst jest zatem próbą opisania kondycji polskiej socjologii sportu przez pryzmat trzech jej aspektów: przeszłości, teraźniejszości i przyszłości.

Several methods of multidimensional scaling are first reviewed. The emphasis is not on mathematical intricacies of estimating techniques but on general formulation of the problem itself. A practical example is analyzed by means of multidimensional scaling and individual differences scaling methods. In the last chapter the same example is investigated for comparative reasons using hierarchical cluster analysis.

The text describes how the public task of the social sciences could be linked with the practice of critical sociology. Recently, interesting changes have occurred which extend this prospect. In the last years, aside from critical analyses of changing social conditions, there have also been auto-reflections on the social entanglement of knowledge about the transformation. Critical analysis of the public function of scientific diagnoses and the engagement of sociologists is the result of earlier thinking about the model of imitative modernization. The source of the latter’s domination can be sought in the social characteristics of Eastern Europe; the basis is recognition of the area’s historical peripheralness and long-lasting economic backwardness. The growing interest in critical sociology in Poland not only broadens the interpretative palette, but above all raises questions about the originality of interpretations: that is, it addresses the mechanism of import or local creation in the interpretation of social phenomena in the post-communist sphere.
