Opis:
A survey of the modern theories of explanation leads us to conclude that it is J. Woodward's conterfactual approach that seems to set out a promising agenda for setting up a satisfactory model of explanation. Such a model would need to come to terms with two stipulations, i.e. to reflect causal asymmetry and be empirically adequate. To meet the latter I modify the counterfactual model of explanation to require a class of observationally equivalent (Bayesian) causal models instead of the true causal model. For in most cases empirical adequacy of causal models, i.e. their identifiability and consistency with observed distributions, would neither grant the stronger conclusion Woodward embeds in his conterfactual account of explanation nor license metaphysical naturalism.

relation between text and music
Opis:
“Life-writing”, manifesting itself in the extremely personal character of the composition, is one of the most important features of Aleksander Nowak’s work, which clearly distinguish him from other composers. “Life-writing” conceals such creative inspirations as the methods and means of composing. Nowak very often draws topics or sound material of the composition from his own life experiences. At the same time, he hopes to achieve a certain type of energy or emotions, which will then to evoke the feelings that are similar to those accompanying the writing of the piece. The issue of conveying in the work any or more specific, though significant, emotions is therefore the first-rate issue. For this reason, in his works, the musical tradition is often combined with the popular and well-known music. A specific representation of the idea of “life-writing” are Nowak’s operas: Sudden Rain for soprano, baritone, mixed choir and chamber orchestra and two-act Space Opera for soprano, mezzo-soprano, countertenor, baritone, bass, mixed choir and symphonic orchestra.

Opis:
In the article, the author outlines the theory of action by Polish philosopher Leszek Nowak, the so-called non-Evangelical model of the human, which may provide basis for the theoretical integration of various disciplines within humanities. The models overcomes the limitations of the concepts of rationality of action, originating from the assumption that the acting subject always maximizes their own preferences.  Meanwhile, the discussed theory states that apart from the principle of rationality the principles in force in human life include the principle of counter-rationality and irrationality, which consist in maximisation of someone else’s, not one’s own, preferences and counter-preferences, respectively. The previous applications and expansions of the non-Evangelical described in the article demonstrate that the model has been used in the analysis of political, economic and cultural phenomena.  Hence, the model may be a cognitively useful foundation for conducting interdisciplinary research.

Opis:
The theme of this paper is Leszek Nowak’s reconstruction and systematization of metaphilosophy of the negativistic unitarian metaphysics described in Being and Thought in four volumes, published in the years 1998, 2004, 2007, 2019. The goal of the article is to contribute to the discussion on the status of metaphilosophy. Metaphilosophy is understood here as a separate dimension of every philosophical conception determining, on the one hand, how we understand the realm of objects (what we postulate), on the other hand, how we choose methods for the construction of theories and ways to legitimize them. The author tries to show that Nowak’s metaphilosophy assumed in negativistic unitarian metaphysics meets exactly this definition of metaphilosophy.

Opis:
The goal of the article is to highlight the links between Tadeusz Nowak’s novel A jak królem, a jak katem będziesz (When You Are a King, When You Are a Hangman), with the trend known as magical realism. Pointing out to the connections with this trend, which is very much alive in the contemporary world literature, allows one to survey the writings of the Polish author from a new, broader perspective. One is able to perceive the whole richness of the author’s prose, where realism and the miraculous seem to grow out of reality and are equivalent to one another. The elements of magical realism  distinguished by the authoress (the element of magic in the realistically constructed depicted world, the permeation of two worlds and two separate realities, the refl ection of the magical mentality etc.) are also present in Nowak’s other works, and particularly in his short-stories dating back to different periods, such as Przebudzenia (Awakenings), W puchu alleluja, In the fluff of the hallelujah? or Półbaśnie (Half-Fairy Tales).

Opis:
In the late 1970s, Stefan Nowak posited the existence of a sociological vacuum in Poland, and his concept became one of the most widely employed in studies of this society. The author of the present article uses an inventory of publications citing Nowak’s perspective to analyse the manner in which this key concept has been implemented in sociological explanations. According to his findings, the idea appears to be most often used in accounts of the 1980s “Solidarność” movement, in reference to civil society and social capital, and in treatments of democracy in Poland. The validity of Nowak’s idea is not usually questioned, and scholars referring to his thesis frequently modify the initial argument by shifting its meaning and ignoring its national identity element. Furthermore, in the analyzed works, the authors point to a sociological vacuum as an obstacle to the desired development of civil society, social capital, and democracy in Poland. This is usually done without deeper theoretical or empirical discussion, and in an essayistic and dramatized fashion. Such an anxiety about the lack of necessary ingredients in Polish society is described as horror vacui-i.e., fear of empty space.

Photoluminescence measurements on CdTe/ZeTe self-assembled quantum dot samples with different cap thickness values (18-110nm) were performed at 1.8 K at varying excitation levels. The shape of macrophotoluminescence spectra did not altered notably with the excitation power. The spectra exhibited interference fringes related to the total barrier thickness. Simulation of the fringes confirmed the barrier thickness determined during the growth. The minimal amplitude of the fringes was observed for the cap thickness corresponding approximately to a quarter of the emission wavelength in the barrier material. Maximum emission intensity occurred for the largest thickness of the cap, i.e., 110 nm. We attribute this result to the influence of the surface recombination centers.

The aim of the study was to create a method of assessing the development of pilgrim cities PCDI. During building PCDI method, a number of indicators that determine important areas of the city were subject to verification and divided into two main groups. The first group characterizes pilgrims coming to the shrine, while the other relates to infrastructure affecting the comfort of pilgrims. Using available tools such as the presented method PCDI will allow making the right management decisions and may contribute to the development of tourism and tourism-related infrastructure.

Leszek Nowak’s social philosophy in a historical and systematic perspective

Opis:
The paper presents two complementary views on the social philosophy of Leszek Nowak – one of the most prominent, original and versatile Polish philosophers: historical and systematic. As regards the historical perspective, some brief remarks on the history of Polish analytical philosophy have been made. Two points have been underscored: First, the continuity of this history – from its creator Kazimierz Twardowski to Leszek Nowak, and his disciples. And second: the plurality of philosophical worldviews (Christian, liberal, Marxist...) which were analytically elaborated by Polish philosophers. As regards the systematic perspective, two elements are to be mentioned. Firstly, a number of arguments have been formulated to support author’s conviction that non-Marxian historical materialism is one of the most important social philosophies. Secondly, some critical remarks on this philosophy have been made.
