The article is devoted to the little known but interesting Polish diplomat Mikołaj Sękowski, the envoy to Naples and Madrid in the last quarter of the sixteenth century. The main purpose of the text is to complete Sękowski’s biography with new details, and to shed a different light on his activity, placing it within the context of the beginnings of public diplomacy. Through the analysis of documental and literary sources comprised principally between 1576 and 1588, the author argues that Mikołaj Sękowski had, for more than a decade, remained a stable and active source of information about Poland in Italy in Spain. Thus, he provided an additional and unusual element of ‘soft diplomacy’ to the Polish foreign service actions in Naples and Madrid, aimed principally at recovering the Neapolitan sums.

Although the concept of intuition has a central place in experimental philosophy, it is still far from being clear. Moreover, critics of that movement often argue that the concept of intuition in experimental philosophy does not correspond to the concept of intuition used in traditional, armchair philosophy. However, such a claim is problematic, because most attempts to define this concept are made with regard to the armchair philosophy’s point of view and not that of experimental philosophy. In the article I analyse the concept of intuition in experimental philosophy by taking into account its theoretical assumptions, and the research practice of its representatives. By analysing the most influential experimental philosophers’ views, I formulate its core characteristics. According to them, intuition is a mental state that is a reaction to the described case, which is revealed in the readiness to express a judgment about this case. Then, I investigate step by step the frequently postulated methodological, phenomenological, and etiological conditions that could narrow down the initial definition. I show that the only condition coherent with experimental philosophy’s assumptions and its practice is an etiological one, as the mental state that could be classified as intuition has to be shaped by pragmatic, and not only semantic factors. In the last parts of the text, I draw out some of the consequences of the position that I have presented, regarding the methodology of experimental philosophy and philosophy in general.

La finalidad de este artículo es presentar las actividades llevadas a cabo por los diplomáticos polacos en España en el campo de la difusión de información sobre Polonia. En particular, se propone el análisis de dos textos publicados en Madrid: Breve i sumaria descripción del Reyno de Polonia (1588) de Mikołaj Sękowski y Relación diaria de las guerras tenidas entre Polacos y Turcos por los años 1620 y 1621 (1623) de Maciej Tytlewski. Se trata, respectivamente, de la primera y la segunda publicación en la historia dedicadas a Polonia en castellano, lo que sugiere la intencionalidad divulgativa de los autores. Sus acciones se enmarcan en el contexto de las iniciativas diplomáticas polacas en la corte española, pero también son un reflejo de una corriente general entre los escritores polacos, quienes en la época de la “revolución de la imprenta” publicaban numerosas obras para presentar en el extranjero información fidedigna acerca de Polonia.

The present article reviews the psychological literature on selected problems of gifted education. The subject matter of the present article is the image of library and librarian in a forgotten short story by a Polish-Russian writer Józef Julian Sękowski (1800−1858). Sękowski is known in Polish literature as a multi-talented orientalist and polyglot, who changed his national identity in 1832 and began to write only in Russian. In the history of Russian literature he is famous for Library for Reading and Fantastic Voyages of Baron Brambeus, an ironic-grotesque work, which was precursory in Russian prose. Until 1832 Sękowski was, however, a Polish writer. His last significant work was An Audience with Lucypher published in a Polish magazine Bałamut Petersburski (Petersburgian Philanderer) in 1832 and immediately translated into Russian by Sękowski himself under the title Bolszoj wychod u Satany (1833). The library and librarian presented by the author in this piece are a caricature illustration proving his nihilistic worldview. Sękowski is a master of irony and grotesquery, yet the world he creates is deprived of freedom and justice and a book in this world is merely a threat to absolute power.

The article provides an overview of exonyms used in reference to Poland in Chinese-language cartographic and textual sources from the period of Imperial China (i.e. until 1912) with the earliest source dating back to the 14th century. Extensive excerpts of the textual sources have been quoted and translated into Polish to providethe reader with information on the state of knowledge about Poland amongst Chinese officials, scholars and rulers from that period. The use of Chinese-language texts written both by Chinese and foreign authors allows for a basic analysis of foreign influences on Chinese exonymy. Fragments of maps have been included in the article to introduce the reader to the style and level of Chinese cartography from the period.

Opis:
Good quality communication in the family is a source of positive relations among its members. It is the most important characteristic of a well-functioning family. Very interesting perceptions of communication in the family are held by high achieving students. In those young people, communication in the family correlates negatively with their high grade point average. Also, they evaluate positively communication in the family as a whole but less positively one-to-one verbal interactions with the mother and the father. This observation is explained by the fact that the family forms a system. Moreover, communication is associated with positive relationships and attitudes such as acceptance and autonomy, but correlates negatively with control, over-demanding behaviour, and inconsistency in the parents of high achieving students.

Doświadczenia uprawowe przeprowadzono w nieogrzewanej szklarni w latach 2003 i 2004. Zastosowano rośliny ukorzenione w roku poprzedzającym uprawę. Berberys uprawiano w pojemnikach 2,7 dm³, które były wypełnione mieszaniną torfu wysokiego, przekompostowanej kory sosnowej oraz ziemi pobranej z warstwy ornej pola (w stosunku objętościowym 2:2:1). Odczyn tego podłoża wynosił 5,0 (pH w H20). Do badań w 2003 roku użyto dwa wolnodziałające nawozy: Osmocote Exact Standard oraz Osmocote Exact Hi-Start w następujących dawkach: 2,0 oraz 2,5 g·dm³ podłoża. W 2004 roku zastosowano dodatkowe dawki nawozów: 3,0; 3,5; 4,0; 4,5; 5,0; 6,0 g·dm³ podłoża. Nawozy dodawano indywidualnie do podłoża w pojemnikach dwa dni przed sadzeniem roślin. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych doświadczeń wykazano, że do uprawy berberysu 'Profesor Sękowski' można stosować nawóz Osmocote Exact Standard lub Osmocote Exact Hi-Start w dawce 3,0; 3,5 lub 4,0 g·dm³ podłoża. Rośliny wytworzyły średnio trzy pędy o długości około 50 cm. Większe dawki nawozów spowodowały nie zdrewnienie pędów berberysów przed zimą, co może doprowadzić do ich przemarznięcia.
Cultivation experiments were conducted in an unheated glasshouse in the years 2003 and 2004. For the experiments barberry plants rooted in the year preceding the cultivation experiment were used. Barberry plants were cultivated in containers of 2.7 dm³ volume filled up with a mixture of high moor peat, composted pine bark and mineral soil taken out of the cultivation layer of a field (in the volume ratio 2:2:1) pH of that growing substrate in H2O reached 5.0. For the experiments in the year 2003 two fertilizers with prolonged nutrient release: Osmocote Exact Standard and Osmocote Exact Hi-Start in the following doses - 2.0 and 2.5 g·dm³ of growing substrate were used. In the year 2004 additional doses of fertilizers were applied, namely 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; 4.5; 5.0; 6.0 g·dm³ of growing substrate. The fertilizers were applied individually for growing substrate in containers two days before barberry plants were planted. On the basis of the conducted experiments it was shown, that for the cultivation of barberry 'Profesor Sękowski' cultivar, fertilizer Osmocote Exact Standard or Osmocote Exact Hi-Start in doses 3.0; 3.5 or 4.0 g·dm³ of growing substrate can be used. Barberry plants produced three shoots per plant on the average of the length of 50 cm. Larger doses of the fertilizers caused that the shoots did not lignify before winter, which in turn may lead to their frost penetration.

Nanotechnologia jest nauką stosunkowo młodą, obejmuje syntezę i badanie obiektów o rozmiarach rzędu 10-9 metra. Jedną z prób zastosowania nanotechnologii jest wykorzystanie nanocząsteczek w terapii przeciwnowotworowej. Prowadzone prace badawcze mają na celu syntezę całkowicie nowych związków terapeutycznych oraz podniesienie wydajności terapii konwencjonalnych m.in. radioterapii. Wykazano, że podanie nanocząsteczek złota podczas naświetlania zwiększa efekty terapeutyczne w postaci obniżenia zdolności komórek do proliferacji. Co ważniejsze, silniejsze efekty uzyskano przy zastosowaniu promieniowania o energii mniejszej (rzędu kiloelektronowoltów zamiast megaelektronowoltów). Opisano również, że w radioterapii łączonej z inkubacją komórek z nanocząsteczkami złota opłaszczonymi glukozą zmniejsza się ich zdolność do proliferacji oraz wzrasta odsetek komórek wchodzących na szlak apoptozy. Dochodzi również do zmian w ekspresji białka p53 i zatrzymywanie się komórek w punkcie kontrolnym G2/M, w którym komórki są najbardziej wrażliwe na promieniowanie. Z tego względu modyfikacje NPs mogą stanowić ogromną szansę na opracowanie innowacyjnych i wysoce skutecznych leków przeciwnowotworowych.
Nanotechnology is a relatively young science focusing on the synthesis and studies of the objects with dimensions of the order of 10-9 meters. One approach to make the nanotechnology useful consists in application of nanoparticles in anticancer therapy. There are conducted studies aimed at the synthesis of totally new therapeutic compounds and increased efficiency of conventional therapies, among others - radiotherapy. It was demonstrated that administration of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) during the exposure of cells to ionizing radiation increases therapeutic effects by reducing their proliferation. Moreover, larger effects of radiation treatment combined with GNPs were obtained by using radiation energies in the range of keV instead of MeV. It was also described that irradiation combined with incubation of cells with gold nanoparticles coated with glucose decreases their ability to proliferate and increases the percentage of the cells entering on the apoptotic pathway. This leads also to changes in p53 protein expression and arrest of cell cycle in the G2/M phase, in which cells are most sensitive to radiation. Therefore, modifications of GNPs may help to develop innovative and highly effective anticancer drugs.

The international research project about evacuations in the French-German border regionIn July 2012 the international French-German research project treating about the evacuations in the French-German border region during World War II was started up. The initiative is scheduled for the years 2012–2015 and realized by Université Paris Sorbonne – Paris IV, Universität des Saarlandes, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen. The coordinators of the reseach team are: Prof. Olivier Forcade (Paris), Prof. Rainer Hudemann (Saarbrücken), Juniorprof. Fabian Lemmes (Bochum) and Juniorprof. Johannes Großmann (Tübingen). The project has obtained funding from the French Agence nationale de la Recherche and the German Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The members of the both sides (French and German) research the processes of evacuations of civilian populations by the French Third Republic – from Alsace and Moselle, and by the totalitarian Nazi regime in Germany – from Saarland, Palatinate and Baden. The “management” of refugee populations from these border regions in the areas of their reception (particularly the French departments: Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Dordogne and Charente and the German states: Francony, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Thuringia) is also examined. The role of the NGOs, the International Red Cross and his national committees and of the local churches and religious associations is studied in the comparative aspect. The comparative perspective refers to the research in the French and German cases but also to the larger perspective of the comparison of the evacuations in the western and middle-eastern Europe, especially in German-Polish border regions. The investigations of members of the project team result in one or two post-doctoral works, four PhD dissertations, a few M.A. thesis prepared under the supervision of the coordinators of this research project and in a number of research articles of all the members of project group. Furthermore, two expositions will be organized: in 2014 in Saarbrücken and probably in 2015 in Paris.

Celem badania było sprawdzenie, czy kobiety zajmujące stanowiska kierownicze posiadają specyficzny repertuar cech z zakresu inteligencji emocjonalnej oraz motywacji osiągnięć. Badanie przeprowadzono na próbie 100 kobiet – 50 kierowniczek i 50 podwładnych (wiek M = 39,04). Do badania zmiennych psychologicznych wykorzystano: Inwentarz Motywacji Osiągnięć LMI H. Schulera i M. Prochaski, w polskiej adaptacji W. Klinkosza i A.E. Sękowskiego (2013), oraz Dwuwymiarowy Inwentarz Inteligencji Emocjonalnej DINEMO A. Matczak i A. Jaworowskiej (2006). Przeprowadzone badania pokazały, że istnieją różnice w obszarze motywacji osiągnięć pomiędzy kierowniczkami i podwładnymi. Okazuje się, że kierowniczki różnią się od innych pracownic w czynniku pewności siebie, a także w cechach, takich jak dominacja, dbanie o prestiż i zaangażowanie. Interesujące jest również to, że wiele czynników inteligencji emocjonalnej istotnie koreluje z czynnikami motywacji osiągnięć w grupie kierowniczek. Zebrane dane można wykorzystać w celach rekrutacji oraz wsparcia rozwoju zawodowego i osobistego.

In the paper the authors describe the phenomenon of inconspicuous consumption, including the consumer behaviors characteristic of it and the socioeconomic processes underlying it. The authors analyzed the manifestations of inconspicuous consumption from the perspective of three conceptions of materialism: Belk’s, Richins and Dawson’s, and Kasser and Ryan’s. They identified the elements linking inconspicuous consumption with specific aspects of materialism as well as the points of difference between these two phenomena.

Wittgenstein’s philosophy of religion is not very well known in polish philosophical literature. His conception of language-games is sometimes vague. The article presents the problem of faith and religion in the context of Wittgenstein's language-games. The trouble with it is lack of precise definition of language-game. Still, under certain conditions, we can discuss faith and religion from the perspective of language-games. It becomes possible to indicate a specific religious language which could be treated as a language-game. Three components characteristic for language-games - some set of words (vocabulary), grammar, and form of life (which is inseparably related to language-game) - could be separated also for religious language. In the face of studies, faith appears as inseparably related to activity. That means that the believer is pushed to specified activities, and we can't talk about faith without these activities. Faith is a "picture" which affects the lives of believers and forms them.

Andrzeja Indrzejczaka w Katedrze Logiki i Metodologii Nauk Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego i obronionej 20 lipca 2017 roku na Wydziale Filozoficzno-Historycznym UŁ. Przykłady i twierdzenia zawarte w tekście wybrałem spośród zebranych w pracy doktorskiej. Niektóre przeredagowałem, żeby uwypuklić najważniejsze w kontekście artykułu zjawiska.
The argument tu quoque is widely called a logical fallacy. The aim of this study is to show, that this theorem is ill-considered. The text is focused on the analysis of various examples of tu quoque. This analysis leads to the conclusion that there are logically correct tu quoque. There are given some examples of such tu quoque. Main theorem of the article is that tu quoque is correct if it’s used as some kind of mental shortcut referring to other arguments.
