    Breast and cervical cancer represent a significant health and economic issue for Polish society, although if detected early, both can be cured successfully. For this reason, since 2006, according to the National Cancer Combat Programme, populationbased screening programmes have been implemented, aimed at reducing the mortality and morbidity for breast and cervical cancer. The aim of this study is to determine which of the selected four environmental factors affect attendance for screening mammography and cytology. Analysis included data from questionnaires filled in during mammography by 582,959 women aged 50–69 years, and 288,142 women during cytology, aged 25–59 years, in 2007–2012 in the Wielkopolska Province of Poland. It was found that the impact of medical staff on the attendance for cytological screening was the strongest statistically significant factor (p = 0,0001). Invitation by name (p=0,001) and other factors (p= 0,0001) also affected the attendance. In the cytological screening, medical staff was the factor that had the greatest impact on attendance. Other factors, such as self-reporting, increased participation in the next screening rounds, although the factors that affect attendance changed over time. Their constant analysis is essential for the efficient and effective evaluation of screening programsme.

    Opis:
    This paper presents the senatus consultum ultimum, i.e., the final resolution of the senate passed in moments of extraordinary danger to the Roman Republic. We answer the question what was the legitimacy of such resolutions and indicate their rationale and the effects of their issuance. Senatus consultum ultimum was the most powerful weapon of the Roman senate in the fight against internal political enemies in the late republic, so it needs to be clarified whether the SCU was a legitimate measure to protect the state or it cared only for the political self-determination of the senate and the optimates.
    W niniejszym opracowaniu zostanie przybliżona senatus consultum ultimum, tj. ostateczna uchwała senatu podejmowana w momentach nadzwyczajnego zagrożenia rzymskiej republiki. Postaram odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jaka była legalność ustrojowa takich uchwał, ponadto wskazać ich przesłanki oraz skutki wydania. Senatus consultum ultimum było bowiem najpotężniejszą bronią rzymskiego senatu w walce przeciwko wewnętrznym wrogom politycznym w późnej republice, dlatego wyjaśnienia wymaga, czy SCU było zgodnym z prawem środkiem służącym ochronie państwa czy dbało tylko o polityczne samostanowienie senatu i optymatów.

    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to refer Polybius’s political theory, included in Book VI of The Histories, to the history of the rise of the Roman Republic. This theme must have been particularly significant for Polybius. For him, Rome was the most perfect example of a mixed government system, and the aim of describing its history was to show the development of this perfect system. The article presents the mutual relation of theory and history, starting with the period of kingship, up to the emergence of the democratic element, i.e. the moment when Rome acquired the mixed system of government. Both the political and social contexts of the changes are outlined. The analysis suggests that Polybius related his political theory to the history of the state he admired, thus providing the theory with actual foundations. Reconstructing his analysis makes it possible to see the history of Rome in a different light, and to ponder the system itself and its decline, even though the main objective of both Polybius and this article is to present its development.

    The subject of this review is a study by Anna Tatarkiewicz devoted to the woman becoming mother in Ancient Rome. It delves into such aspects of lives and functioning of women in Ancient Rome as: the birth of a baby girl, her later wedding, pregnancy period, biologically giving birth, and dies lustricus, that is, acknowledging the social fact of childbirth by law, which equalled a mother being born symbolically.
