Opis:
In this study we have analysed haplotypes of microsatellite markers of the CFTR gene: IVS8CA, IVS17BTA, IVS17BCA in 17 CF chromosomes of Polish origin and in 19 chromosomes of German origin bearing CF mutations other than ΔF508. In the Polish population, the G542X mutation is connected with haplotypes 16/17-28/32/38-13; in the German population, a more diverse haplotype association has been detected (23-33-13 and 16-32-13). The 1717-1G->A mutation is associated with the 15/16-7-13 haplotype in the Polish population, like the G551D mutation in Germany. The only analysed case of N1303K of Polish origin is connected with the 23-30-13 haplotype, like in the German population. One N1303K chromosome of an entirely different haplotype (16-29-17) turned out to be of Greek origin. These data suggest an ancient, Palaeolithic or Neolithic origin of these mutations in the territory of current Northern Europe.

Opis:
The nuclear microprobe installed at Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear, in Lisbon, was used in the analysis of aerosols collected at the Azores islands. Samples from two different aerosol groups were analysed. One referred to aerosols that were carried from North America and the other one contained aerosols that were carried from the Sahara desert and crossed over Europe. Coarse and fine fractions were analysed for each aerosol group and two-dimensional elemental maps were constructed, which allowed the identification of several individual particles. For particles of interest, elemental spatial correlations and dimensions were determined and point analysis was also carried out (depth information was achieved by fitting Rutherford backscattering spectra). Some of these particles are quite interesting. For instance, in the fine fraction of the aerosols that were carried from North America, particles were found with Cu and Cl in the atomic proportion 1:2 and with dimensions 15×15×15μm$\text{}^{3}$, and in the corresponding coarse fraction a particle with K and S was identified, with dimensions 28×35×30μm$\text{}^{3}$. Some differences were found between the aerosols groups. One example of these are Ti particles (fine fraction) and Rb (coarse fraction) that were identified in one group (Sahara desert and Europe), but not in the other

Opis:
Is there a difference between structure and a structural element in a musical work or practice? How can one tackle such a question methodologically? Are these concepts part of an abstract construct or are they perceivable to the ear? And about whose ear would one be talking about? When does one speak about an idiomatic style (for the piano) and how much of this idea is materialized in music? Is such reflection useful to understand a musical practice? In this text, I propose a view of the piano playing the main role in the structure and as a structural element by describing compositional situations and giving a counterpoint on them. This paper is organized as follows: a short theoretical framework where the first questions are challenged, along with paradigmatic examples on how the piano has been used in the structure and as a structural element in western art music, mainly from the second half of the 20th century and nowadays, including short considerations on how and the rationale why I have used it in some of my music compositions.

Opis:
Introduction: Evidence regarding the effect of speechreading is lacking in age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). Thus, in individuals with presbycusis, this study determined whether speechreading would improve word intelligibility. Moreover, the study investigated the effect of speechreading on word intelligibility depending on hearing impairment severity. Materials and methods: This analytical, cross-sectional study involved two groups of individuals aged > 65 years that were enrolled by convenience sampling: 29 individuals with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss compatible with presbycusis (n=58 ears; mean age, 74.1±9.4 years) and 10 controls with at-most-mild hearing loss (n=58 ears; mean age, 73.8±8.5 years). All participants underwent a comprehensive medical and audiological evaluation, which included speech audiometry with and without observation of the audiologist’s face, i.e. speechreading. Within each group, the effect of speechreading was determined as a change in the speech reception threshold. For all statistical analyses, p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Both in individuals with presbycusis and controls, speechreading significantly improved speech discrimination (p<.001<.05); however, compared to controls, this effect of speechreading on speech discrimination was more pronounced in individuals with presbycusis (p<.001). Discussion: Individuals with presbycusis or hearing impairment displayed improved spoken-word intelligibility when spoken-word recognition was coupled with speechreading. Thus, speechreading may serve as a “third ear”.

Retardant stosowano jednokrotnie w stężeniach: 2 125; 4 250; 6 375 mg·dm³. W porównaniu do roślin kontrolnych dalie traktowane najwyższą dawka preparatu były istotnie niższe o 13,7-18,8% oraz o 15-25% węższe. Retardant powodował ponadto zwiększenie liczby kwiatostanów u odmiany 'Gea' a skrócenie szypuł kwiatostanowych oraz zmniejszenie średnicy kwiatostanów u wszystkich odmian.
The subject of experiments were 3 cultivars of Dahlia x cultorum: 'Krynica', 'Gea', 'Red Pigmy', which were grown in 20 cm pots. When the plants were 10-12 cm high they were nipped above the third pair of leaves. After 3 weeks they were sprayed with daminozide B-Nine 85 SP Retardant was applied as a single foliar spray with 2 125; 4 250; 6 375 mg·dm³ doses. Plants treated with the highest dose of the preparation were significantly lower about 13.7-18.8% and more narrow about 15-25% than control plants. Retardant also increased the number of 'Gea' inflorescences and caused shortening of the peduncles and decrease of the diameter of inflorescences in all cultivars.

Opis:
We present an aerobic and anaerobic, exercise and recovery energy cost model of intermittent energy costs utilizing task (work, Joules) as opposed to rate (per minute) measurements. Low to moderate intensity steady state exercise energy costs are typically portrayed as the volumetric rate at which oxygen is consumed (VO2 L min–1), where a proportionate upward climbing linear relationship is profiled with an increasing power output; add to this the concept of the anaerobic threshold and energy costs increase with more intense aerobic exercise in disproportion to VO2 L min–1 measurements. As a per task function, intermittent work and recovery bouts contain a combined estimate of total costs, that is as kJ or kcal (not kJ.min-1 or kcal.min-1). Adopting this approach to describe single and multiple sets of resistance training, the model that emerges for intermittent resistance exercise portrays linearity between equivalent work and total energy costs that differs proportionately among conditions – “continuous” muscular endurance vs. Intermittent higher load strength work, moderately paced vs. slower and faster conditions, smaller vs. larger working muscle masses and failure (fatigue) vs. non-failure states. Moreover, per kcal (or kJ) of total energy costs, work (J) is more inefficient with a greater load and lower repetition number as opposed to lower resistance with an increased number of repetitions. The concept of energy costs Rusing disproportionately with increased or prolonged work does not appear to apply to resistance exercise.

Opis:
Being a teacher in the 21st century is a great challenge and requires great thought. A big evolution has happened over the last 70 years. From a room computer (the Mark I in 1943) to tiny pocket computers, thousands of times smaller and thousands of times bigger in performance and capacity. E-learning 3.0 is based on synchronous interactivity and it was only possible after 2004 due to a considerable increase of Internet bandwidth available, evolution in video compression, stream video, and sophistication of virtual classroom platforms. This was another revolution. As a result, e-learning has evolved to a new form: b-learning – where students will never be alone and interactivity becomes very important. B-learning has a different format now: from now on it is asynchronous (content on demand and activities to be implemented in an interactive format with remote collaborative work) and synchronous in presence or virtual environment. Teachers need to evolve from teacher to (blended) b-teacher or b-tutor, offering a mixed teaching expertise.

Opis:
The present essay aims to reflect on the questions of how the BBC news website discussion forum Have your say is organized and to what extent it can be considered as a transnational or global public sphere for public deliberation. In order to do so, one must firstly look at this discussion forum in terms of its structure, so that we can comprehend in a descriptive and formal way what is Have your say. Then, to try to understand and suggest what exactly Have your say is in terms of the possibility of being a global public sphere for public deliberation, one must tackle into a reflection that encompasses the concepts of transnational/global public sphere (Habermas, 1996; Castells, 2008), public deliberation (Pateman, 1970; Drvzek, 2000; Abelson et al., 2003), as well as some mediation/mediatization paradigms. The goal of this essay is to provide an objective academic reflection by attempting to frame this specific online phenomenon within the concepts above mentioned, to ultimately argue and prove that online discussion forums such as Have your say are by definition ambivalent.

This paper presents the study and implementation of a new vector control strategy using a hybrid control technique applied to the mechanical position loop aiming to obtain a system that acts in the fractional horsepower motor driver running at near zero frequency. For this purpose, some control techniques are employed to check which one has the best performance regarding this type of application. The use of three control techniques is considered: the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller with fixed gain; the Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) controller; and a hybrid controller. The last one behaves as both PID and GPC using fuzzy logic in order to achieve improved system performance. Simulation and experimental results are shown and discussed to demonstrate the merits of the proposed approach.
