Opis:
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging is useful in various clinical situations including assessing dental morphology prior to endodontic treatment, locating tooth perforations, separated endodontic files, and resorptions. The aim of this paper was to present the usefulness of CBCT in endodontic treatment planning, through the review of two complicated endodontic cases. Two cases of failed endodontic treatment were presented in which CBCT allowed for correct diagnosis, as well as endodontic treatment qualification and planning. CBCT is especially useful when assessing endodontic treatment complications such as overextended root canal obturation material, separated endodontic instruments, and/or localization of perforations. Having the pros of CBCT in mind, one always has to weigh the added diagnostic value of CBCT with the economic cost of the tool employed, in order to make the best informed decision regarding accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Opis:
Patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) prefer carbohydrates and foods, which easy to digest, both risk factors of caries disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dental caries prevalence and oral hygiene habits in CD patients who live in urban and rural areas of the southern part of Poland in comparison to controls. Seventy one adult patients with CD and 61 age – and sex – matched volunteers were enrolled; 52% of patients were living in urban areas, 48% in rural regions. We studied: findings on clinical examination, calculation of BMI, blood hemoglobin and serum CRP levels, oral examination according to the WHO recommendations, with assessment of oral hygiene habits, dental history, visits to dentists. Presence of decayed (D), missing (M), filled teeth (F) were assessed, and the “Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth Index” (DMF-T) was calculated. Statistical methods included non-parametric tests and Spearman correlation coefficient estimation. Dental caries assessed by DMF-T index was higher in CD patients compared to controls. DMF-T was similar in patients from urban and rural areas (14.2±4.7 vs 15.4±2.1, respectively). M and F scores were comparable in both groups, but D score was higher in CD patients (p<0.01). No correlation was found between DMF-T index and place of living. Patients from rural areas less frequently used tooth brushing (68% vs 57%, p<0.05) and dental floss (11% vs 5%, p<0.05). Patients from urban areas visited dentists more frequently than those from rural regions. The prevalence of dental caries in the middle aged CD patients living in the southern region of Poland is higher in comparison to healthy controls. The prevalence of caries disease and oral hygiene habits in CD patients is comparable between patients living in urban areas and in rural regions.

Opis:
Modern medicine used many methods of treatment; one of them is phytotherapy. It is documented that plants can not only prevent many diseases, but also cure diseases. Main activities of plant materials used in dentistry are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, decongestant, adtringent, anti-bleeding and regenerating. The natural materials used in dentistry are mainly in the form of lotions, tinctures, infusions, toothpaste, drops and gels. The most important group of active compounds in dental formulations of natural origin include essential oils, monoterpenoides, phenolic compounds, gums, resins, tannins, flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, chlorophyll, vitamins, elements such as especially zinc and minerals such as AlK(SO4)2. It occurs naturally and is used for control of bleeding, and as an antiseptic. The ideal antimicrobial agent should be effective in removing bacteria responsible for the periodontal disease process; to have the widest possible range of action, does not cause side effects and have a prolonged activity in the oral cavity. Accordingly natural products particularly as essential oils and phenol compounds can, fulfill these tasks.
