dispatch on the Holocaust
Opis:
On 22nd July 1942, Germans initiated the Grossaktion, i.e. the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto. The first known piece of information from the Polish Underground State addressed to the Polish Government-in-exile in London is the dispatch of 26th July 1942 by Stefan Korboński. However, its complete content has been unknown to date. All the evidence suggests that the key sentence about the daily “contingents” of Jews transported for extermination was wrongly understood in London. Moreover, unlike Korboński’s intention, the dispatch was publicised via the radio, which contradicts the thesis about the silence of the Polish Government-in-exile (at least in the initial period).

Opis:
In the years 1941–1944 the Home Army, the representation of the government of Polish Republic for the country, and Polish government in London had to face the problem of Soviet guerrilla troops on occupied Polish land. The Polish government didn’t agree to carry out their own diversion action on such a scale that the Soviets expected from them. The Soviet guerrilla troops were not also welcome on Polish land because there wasn’t permission of Polish authorities for their activity. Moreover, they were accused that their activity caused German repression and quite often was a pure robbery. However, it was the reason of certain difficulties in the foreign policy of Polish government in exile. Sikorski’s job was to reconcile Soviet expectations, often supported by Western allies, with protection of Polish affairs. It was the reason, although a part of Polish politicians both in London and at home were in favour of military actions against Soviet guerrillas, that Sikorski was against giving such an order. The Polish government was aware that the argument about performing diversion activity without host’s permission also referred to Polish diversion on Soviet area and the argument about involving German repression – also Home Army guerrillas on truly Polish land. The charge that Soviet guerrilla troops committed robbery can be denied by the argument that Polish underground didn’t get provision for them. Besides the Soviets thought that performing diversion they had the right to do confiscation and they did not acknowledge that they could be killed as bandits. It seems that the attitude to the guerrillas was mainly caused by the fear of Sovietization of the country. This threat was obscured by the fact that there were also ordinary Soviet soldiers in the Soviet troops, e.g. escapee war prisoners, as well as Jews and members of the social or national groups that were persecuted. The attitude of Soviet government towards Home Army guerrillas had also political roots. The action „Storm” showed that the Polish concerns connected with the political evaluation of the Soviets were justified.

Opis:
Were Polish Jews rightful citizens of the Republic of Poland also during the WWII? Different communities of Jewish conspirers, Bundists, assimilationists, Zionists answered the question positively. Different fractions of the Polish underground including the Polish Underground State perceived that issue in a much different way. In the official enunciations it was stated that the problems of ethnic minorities would be regulated ‘on the basis of traditional freedom and the equality of rights and duties’. However, in the press of political parties and the main titles of the Home Army (AK) and Government Delegate’s Office at Home (Delegatura Rządu RP na Kraj) different solutions to the ‘Jewish question’ were suggested. Jews were not perceived rightful citizens in those considerations which were not free from anti-Semitic disrelishes. The conviction about their strangeness together with the conviction about their small military value resulted in the fact that Polish Jews in fact were not engaged in the AK. It happened in the face of the extermination of Jews, which was especially intense in 1942. From the second half of that year the feeling of loneliness and bitterness resulting from the attitude of Poles was building up among Jewish communities. Jewish historians, Israel Gutman and Szmul Krakowski assess very critically the next aspect of Polish-Jewish relations in 1942, that is to say the reaction of the commanders of the AK and the Delegation to the Holocaust. According to them ‘no initiative of help to Polish Jews was undertaken at least until late autumn of 1942.’ The situation was more complicated, in fact. The Polish Underground State in the first half of 1942 thought, similarly as the Jewish communities, that informing the world about extermination of Jews itself would decrease the scale of murders. The Government’s Delegate was also convinced, as the Allies, that only the quick ending of the war may stop the terror directed against both Poles and Jews. At the same time, the Polish circles reacted differently to the persecution of Poles by sending suggestions of organizing different retaliation operations. The reactions to the extermination of Jews were restricted solely to passing the information. The scale of the sent dispatches and reports was defi nitely smaller than in the case of ones concerning Poles.
