    The objective of this paper was to analyze the socio-cultural and personal reasons pivotal to the openness of the conflicting parties to a dialogue in the framework of family mediation. In the quest to answer the question what factors can influence the development of the family mediation in Poland and its acceptance both by the society and the families in conflict, the author presented the results of international and Polish research on the efficacy of the family mediation process and the readiness of the parties to use the mediation in family conflicts. Two theoretical concepts characterizing the socio-cultural origins of resistance to mediation were analyzed in detail, namely that of the social resistance proposed by B. Mayer and that of the moral resistance by R. Benjamin. Moreover, the paper addressed the issue of the promotion of mediation together with the unrealistic expectations as to what can be achieved through mediation, mythologization of mediation and dilemma connected with the neutrality of the mediator. Finally, an integrated systemic approach to family mediation was proposed, which could enhance the chances of acceptance of the mediation by the parties in conflict. In essence it is proposed that the promotion of mediation should be exercised on three levels: (1) general societal level (to promote the winwin solutions in family conflicts), (2) level of specific educational activities for the conflicted parties (e.g. organization of pre-mediation consultative meetings), and (3) level of specific actions targeted at various professional groups (e.g. judges, lawyers, probation officer, employees of the family support centres, etc).

    The objective of this paper was to address the notion of family stigma related to mental illnesses and discuss relevant theoretical perspectives. The review of the literature performed in this study shows that concepts of “family stigma” and “stigma by association” are used interchangeably. Family stigma includes the prejudice and discrimination experienced by members of family of a person suffering from mental illness. For many families the stigmatization that surrounds mental illness is a central issue causing concern, anxiety, shame and self-blame. Moreover, family members can be considered somehow “contaminated” because of close relationship they have with the stigmatized mentally ill person in their family. It is shown that current research results indicate this type of stigma negatively affects family members and relatives. In the paper’s closure some educational programmes devoted to counteracting the family stigma linked to metal disorders are presented.

    The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the literature on conflicts between adult siblings concerning caregiving to elderly parents. Aging process of parents involves a lot of new issues, decisions and can bring the best or the worst in sibling relationships. Potential sources of conflicts may emerge from the lack of clarity in families as to who and to what extent is supposed to give support to aging parents. The perspective of long time caregiving to older parents may for many adult children be hard to imagine and difficult to render. The intergenerational solidarity paradigm was used as a conceptual framework in explanation of motivation of adult siblings to support their older parents and successfully resolve all conflicts. The article concludes with a recommendation of using family mediation as a valu- able method of conflict resolution between adult siblings concerning caregiving to older parents.

    The aim of this paper is to indicate directions of changes in modern families along with their consequences for functioning of the family system and, most importantly, to address difficulties in parental cooperation. Theoretical analysis is preceded by a review of existing, mostly international, research in this field. Three categories of family situations, in which problems and conflicts among parents may arise, are analyzed: divorce and separation, reconstructed families, and families where both spouses work what may trigger work- family type of conflicts. Difficulties in family functioning and playing parental roles, effects of unconstructively resolved conflicts among parents are considered in detail. These three categories of family situations have been selected for investigation because they are often connected with problems in parental cooperation.

    Wielowymiarowa Skala Spostrzeganego Wsparcia Społecznego (The Multidimensional Scale ofPerceived Social Support - MSPSS) została stworzona przez Zimeta i współpracowników (1988) jako samoopisowe narzędzie do oceny spostrzeganego wsparcia społecznego i jest powszechnie wykorzystywane w wielu krajach. Celem prezentowanych badań było opracowanie polskiej adaptacji narzędzia i określenie jego właściwości psychometrycznych. Badana grupa liczyła 1322 osoby. Analizy statystyczne potwierdziły satysfakcjonujące właściwości psychometryczne polskiej adaptacji MSPSS. Ogólnie jej podstawowa struktura zbliżona jest do wersji oryginalnej - eksploracyjna i konfirmacyjna analiza czynnikowa potwierdziły trójczynnikową strukturę (Rodzina, Przyjaciele, Osoba znacząca). Eksploracyjna analiza czynnikowa ukazała, że trójczynnikowe rozwiązanie wyjaśnia 78,80% wariancji. Konfirmacyjna analiza czynnikowa wykazała akceptowalne dopasowanie modelu. Otrzymane rezultaty pokazują, że polska adaptacja Wielowymiarowej Skali Spostrzeganego Wsparcia Społecznego jest rzetelnym oraz ważnym narzędziem, i może być rekomendowana do użytku przez badaczy w Polsce.

    This study explores the influence of three psychological factors of the parental monitoring of children’s Internet activity: (i) parents’ perception of the Internet as a source of threat and risk, (ii) parents’ perception of the Internet as a source of benefits, and (iii) family closeness. The sample consisted of 161 parents (20 fathers and 141 mothers) of children aged 7 - 12. Results show that family closeness is the most significant predictor for parental monitoring. The second significant predictor is parents’ perception of the Internet as a source of threat or risk. As expected, the predictors for parental monitoring of children’s Internet activity depend on children’s age.

    Parents of children with Down syndrome face many challenges related to their children’s disability. They manage to raise their children primarily thanks to their internal resources, protective psychological traits and help from other people. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of ego-resiliency as an important personality trait in a group of mothers and fathers of children with Down syndrome. The relationship between ego-resiliency and parental satisfaction was also studied. The sample consisted of 126 parents (75 mothers and 51 fathers). Our results show that there is no difference in the level of ego-resiliency between mothers and fathers of children with Down syndrome. Nevertheless, it is noticed that there is a difference in perceived stress, psychological well-being and some aspects of parental satisfaction between parents with high and low levels of ego-resiliency. These results give an interesting insight into the internal func- tioning of parents of children with Down syndrome.

    Celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie roli stygmatyzacji oraz przekonań na temat wyglądu w rozwoju depresji u chorych na łuszczycę, uwzględniając wiek wystąpienia łuszczycy oraz poziom spostrzeganego wsparcia społecznego. Badaniem objęto 193 chorych na łuszczycę. Przeprowadzone analizy ujawniły dwa mechanizmy moderowanej mediacji. Okazało się, że wyłącznie u osób, które zachorowały we wczesnym wieku, przekonania na temat wyglądu pełnią rolę mediatora w relacji między występowaniem zmian skórnych a poziomem depresji. Wykazano również, że w grupie chorych, którzy charakteryzują się niskim poziomem wsparcia ze strony rodziny, przyjaciół i innych osób bliskich, stygmatyzacja pełni rolę mediatora w relacji między występowaniem zmian skórnych a objawami depresji. W artykule zostały omówione teoretyczne i praktyczne implikacje prezentowanych wyników.

    Results of many studies show that caring for a child with Down syndrome can be a source of burden. Parents of these children face many financial, medical, social and psychological challenges. The main objective of this study was to answer two questions: (a) whether perceived social support mediates the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being among parents of children with Down syndrome, (b) whether there is any difference in the level of perceived stress between parents who conceive their parenthood in different categories such as burden or satisfaction-happiness. Data were collected from a total sample of 126 parents (75 mothers and 51 fathers). Mediation analysis has shown that social support is a partial mediator between perceived stress and psychological well-being in the group of parents of children with Down syndrome. Moreover, parents who viewed their parenthood as a burden reported a lower level of perceived social support than parents who reported their parenthood as satisfaction-happiness. This study can be helpful in a better understanding of the role of social support in the process of raising a child with Down syndrome.

    This paper is an attempt towards better understanding of the fatherhood of incarcerated men. In particular, research results are reported concerning a tool to measure the paternal involvement of incarcerated fathers – Questionnaire of Paternal Engagement ZK (KOZ-ZK). An exploratory factor analysis has revealed three dimensions of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, namely (i) paternal engagement during the time of imprisonment, (ii) paternal engagement during the leave from prison, (iii) father’s accessibility. In a pilot research project examining the psychometric properties of the questionnaire took part 215 incarcerated fathers. The questionnaire contained 22 items and was proved to have good psychometric properties. Additionally, a qualitative survey was conducted using the KOZ-ZK questionnaire and structured interviews. It turned out that the questionnaire properly reflected different intensities of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, important role being played by the relationship of the men with the mothers of their children.

    A lot of research in marriage psychology has been focused on marital conflicts, constructive versus destructive responses to dissatisfaction in marriage, and especially on how couples behave when discussing conflictual issues. Based on the literature review, we assume that partner support and bonding behaviours are positively related to dialogue as an active and constructive problem solving strategy during marital conflicts. We also put forward a hypothesis that there is a difference in predictors of dialogue between women and men in marital conflicts. In the present study, two main questions were posed: (1) do bonding behaviours (conciliatory behaviours, behaviours undertaken for the sake of the relationship and the partner, and physical closeness) and partner support constitute statistically significant predictors of engaging in dialogue as a constructive response to marital conflict? And (2) are there any differences between women and men as far as these predictors are concerned? A total of 180 young, married people participated in the study (102 wives and 79 husbands), all of whom had been married for 5 years or less. The mean age of the participants was 26 years (M = 26,26; SD = 3,04), while mean marriage duration was approximately 2 years. The obtained results indicate that significant predictors of engaging in marital dialogue amongst young couples are the bonding behaviours undertaken for the sake of the relationship and the partner, as well as the physical closeness and certain types of partner support. Moreover, essential differences between women and men have been revealed.

    The main objective of this study was to develop a Polish version of the Remarriage Belief Inventory (RMBI; Higginbotham, Adler-Baeder, 2008) and evaluate its psychometric properties. Data were collected from a total sample of 262 divorced people. The statistical analysis confirmed satisfactory psychometric properties of the developed Polish version of RMBI. The structure of the Polish version of RMBI obtained in a factor analysis was similar to the original one – exploratory and confirmatory analyses validated the seven-factor structure. The second objective of this study was to explore the role of beliefs about remarriages in the assessment of marital satisfaction. The sample comprised 107 remarried individuals. The regression analysis showed that among the seven original remarriage beliefs statistically significant predictors of marital satisfaction were the following three: (i) success of stepfamily is slim, (ii) new partner is perfect, and (iii) stepfamilies are second-class. Further research on this topic is needed.

    Rodzicielstwo jest złożonym, odpowiedzialnym i trudnym zadaniem życiowym. W przypadku pełnienia funkcji rodzicielskiej wobec dziecka z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną jest to jeszcze bardziej obciążające doświadczenie. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja cieni i blasków towarzyszących wypełnianiu zadań rodzicielskich, a w szczególności koncentracja na tym, co stanowi wyzwanie i utrudnia proces przystosowania do roli rodzicielskiej, jak również na tym, co sprzyja rozwijaniu się satysfakcji z rodzicielstwa mimo trudności i zagrożeń. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza jest poświęcona wybranym przyczynom doświadczania przez rodziców stresu, a więc cieniom rodzicielstwa, które dotyczą trudności pogodzenia się z diagnozą niepełnosprawności dziecka, konieczności zwiększonego wysiłku opiekuna, lękowego nastawienia wobec przyszłości, trudności uzyskania satysfakcjonującej opieki instytucjonalnej oraz negatywnych doświadczeń społecznych rodziny z dzieckiem niepełnosprawnym intelektualnie (m.in. poczucia izolacji społecznej, obaw o odrzucenie dziecka przez rówieśników, obaw o intencjonalne i nieintencjonalne krzywdzenie dziecka). W drugiej części artykułu skoncentrowano się na poszukiwaniu czynników umożliwiających odnajdywanie pozytywnych aspektów rodzicielstwa, analizując czynniki sprzyjające budowaniu poczucia tożsamości rodzicielskiej (m.in. satysfakcję z relacji z małżonkiem, dostrzeganie pozytywnych stron swojej sytuacji rodzicielskiej, poczucie więzi z dzieckiem, cechy osobowości) oraz znaczenie wsparcia społecznego dla dobrostanu psychicznego rodziców. Przyjęłyśmy założenie, że pomagając rodzicom przezwyciężyć stres oraz wspierając ich zasoby osobowościowe i rodzinne – formalne i nieformalne – wzmacniamy nie tylko rodziców, ale przede wszystkim chronimy dzieci, umożliwiając im lepszy rozwój. W trzeciej części zaprezentowano wybrane programy psychoedukacyjne oferowane rodzicom dzieci z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną oraz treningi wzmacniające ich umiejętności rodzicielskie.
    Parenthood is a complex, responsible and difficult life task. In the case of being a parent of child with intellectual disability it is a much more burdening experience. The aim of the article is to present lights and shadows which accompany parents when they fulfill their parental tasks. Attention has been focused especially on challenges and difficulties in the process of adaptation to parental role as well as on factors which conduce to development of parental satisfaction despite difficulties and threats. The article consists of three parts. The first part concerns chosen causes of parental stress (shadows connected with parenting), such as: difficulties with acceptance of diagnosis of child’s disability, necessity of caretaker’s increased effort, anxiety attitude towards future, difficulties in obtaining satisfying institutional care as well as negative social experiences of families rearing a child with intellectual disability (i. a. social isolation, concerns about rejection of a child among its peers, concerns about intentional and unintentional child injuries). The second part of the article focuses on search for factors which allow to find positive aspects of parenthood. The following factors have been analyzed: factors which help parents to build their sense of parental identity (i. a. satisfaction from the relationship with the spouse, detecting bright sides of their own parental situation, bond with a child, personality traits) and the importance of social support for the parents’ psychological well-being. We made an assumption that helping parents to overcome stress by supporting their personal and family resources as well as their formal and informal resources, reinforces not only parents, but above all protects children and gives them a chance for a better development. In the third part of the article chosen psychoeducational programmes adressed to parents of children with intellectual disability as well as trainings enhancing their parental skills have been presented.

    Głównym celem badań była adaptacja i opracowanie polskiej wersji Skali Satysfakcji Seksualnej dla Kobiet (SSS-W) autorstwa Meston i Trapnella (2005) oraz ocena jej właściwości psychometrycznych. Grupę osób badanych stanowiło 651 kobiet. Analizy statystyczne potwierdziły satysfakcjonujące właściwości psychometryczne polskiej wersji kwestionariusza (SSS- W-R15), który w toku analiz został skrócony z 18 do 15 twierdzeń. Generalnie struktura polskiej wersji narzędzia SSS-W-R15, otrzymana w toku analizy czynnikowej, jest podobna do oryginalnej. Zarówno analiza eksploracyjna, jak i konfirmacyjna potwierdziła trójczynnikową strukturę kwestionariusza (zadowolenie, komunikacja, dopasowanie). Otrzymane rezultaty wskazują, że skala SSS-W-R15 jest narzędziem rzetelnym i może być wykorzystywana w badaniach naukowych w Polsce.
