Opis:
Experimental observations show that the N-I transition temperature (T_{NI}) for liquid crystals embedded in solid porous materials is lower compared to that of the bulk liquid crystals and T_{NI} is reduced linearly with the inverse pore diameter. To explain this, various theoretical studies have been proposed. We propose to use the mean field approach. We modify the Maier-Saupe mean field theory to include the disordering effects of porosity as a disordering surface potential. A molecule near the surface is assumed to feel the mean field potential (the Maier-Saupe type) and also the surface induced potential. We calculate the values of the nematic order parameter and hence find the T_{NI} for different pore diameters. The weighted average of the order parameter is calculated considering the cylindrical symmetry of the pores. Our calculations on the variation of T_{NI} with pore diameter agree with experimental data. Also, the calculated values of specific heat peak decrease with decrease in pore radius, in agreement with experimental trends.

Opis:
The flow of two immiscible fluids in porous media is described by two coupled non-linear partial differential equations of the parabolic type. In this paper a numerical algorithm to simulate one-dimensional two-phase flow is presented. Cell-centered finite volume method and a generalized two-level scheme with weighting parameter are applied for the discretization in space and time, respectively. The performance of the algorithm is tested for different values of the weighting parameter in the time-discretization scheme and for various methods of approximation of the average conductivities between two adjacent gridblocks. The results are compared with an analytical solution for the horizontal flow and with a reference numerical solution performed on a dense grid for the vertical flow.

Opis:
This paper describes the effects of a magnetic field on unsteady free convection oscillatory systems. When temperature and species concentration fluctuate with time around a non-zero constant, "Couette flow" across a porous medium occurs. The system of non-linear ODEs that governs the flow is solved analytically using the perturbation approach because the amplitude of fluctuations is very tiny. Mean flow and transient velocity, transient concentration, transient temperature, heat transfer, mean skin friction and phase and amplitude of skin friction. All have approximate solutions. The influence of different parameters on flow characteristics has been specified and discussed.

Opis:
The transport of liquids driven by capillary suction-pressure and balanced by both viscous drag force and gravity acceleration is known as spontaneous imbibition. The prediction of spontaneous imbibition in porous media is of importance due to its relevance as a fundamental phenomenon in numerous industrial technologies as well as in nature. A vast majority of the experimental results and mathematical models concerning the imbibition process of single-phase liquids are considered and analyzed in the literature. The present research focuses on two-phase liquids transport in porous medium driven by capillary force. The penetrating liquids were surfactant-stabilized emulsions with the different dispersed phase concentrations. The discussed issues are the influence of porous bed composition and inner phase concentration on the height of an emulsion penetration, which allows to predict the velocity of imbibition process. From a practical point of view, the experimental results give the possibility to evaluate: productivity of granular sorbents applied to recover the environment, efficiency of building materials wetting with multiphase liquids, process of oil-derived pollutants migration in porous media, e.g. soil and other rock structures, etc.

Opis:
Some rare minerals and metals are extracted by underground leaching. Thus sorption extraction of minerals on mass-transfer devices with use ion-exchange resin is the most widespread method of productive solutions processing. Now wide application finds sorbing device which represents the cylindrical column, filled by a layer of ion-exchange resin in the form of spherical porous granules. Through a column from below upwards with the filtration velocity the solution containing sorbing a mineral is pumped over. Velocity of solution admission is calculated off on kinetic parameters. A cone barrier located before a submitting pipe is intended for achievement of uniform distribution of a solution across a column [fig.]. On an output from a column through certain time tests of a solution which are analyzed on the maintenance in them of mineral are selected. Sorption proceeds until concentration of mineral on an outlet from a column will not be equal some admissible value. After that the saturated layer of a sorbent being below by a mineral is unloaded. Sorbing device from above is supplemented with a fresh sorbent and process repeats. There are some questions, a degree of an involvement of a sorbent in mass-transfer process (especially, in a transverse direction of a column) and change of column resistance depending on the size and forms of cone barrier, influence of dispersive and kinetic characteristics on thickness of the saturated layer.

Opis:
At present, concentrations of pharmaceuticals in surface and ground waters are low; however, even low concentrations of certain substances may prove very harmful. One of such pharmaceutical drugs is diclofenac, a popular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). For this reason, it is important to determine its mobility in groundwater and to estimate parameters of migration. Authors conducted column tests for two porous media: an artificial one, consisting of glass granules, and a natural one, i.e., sandur sand obtained from a site north of the city of Poznań (Poland). During the test, impulse breakthrough curves of chloride ions and diclofenac were recorded. The results were used to identify a specific sorption model and to determine values of migration parameters. Solutions of the inverse problem using optimisation methods and of equations of mathematical migration models were carried out in a MATLAB environment. Based on test results, the mobility of diclofenac is shown to be very high and comparable to that of chloride ions. The tests also revealed a slight and irreversible sorption of diclofenac on grains of both porous media.

Opis:
This paper presents a numerical algorithm for solving the equation describing variably saturated flow in porous media. The algorithm is based on a control volume finite element approach and can be applied to two-dimensional unstructured meshes consisting of triangular elements. Two methods of defining the dual control volume grid are discussed. We also demonstrate that the method of calculating the average permeability at the control volume face significantly influences numerical results.
