Opis:
Jednym z podstawowych źródeł kształtujących społeczną percepcję zaburzeń psychicznych jest kultura. Sposób, w jaki osoby z zaburzeniami psychicznymi przedstawiane są w mediach, telewizji, filmie czy popkulturze, znajduje swoje odbicie w obiegowych przekonaniach i społecznych postawach wobec nich. Do zaburzeń, z których kulturowym obrazem najczęściej spotyka się masowy odbiorca, niewątpliwie należy psychopatia. W niniejszym artykule podjęto się poszukiwania odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim stopniu wizerunek psychopaty obecny we współczesnej kulturze pokrywa się z perspektywą naukową i badaniami nad osobowością psychopatyczną. Analizę oparto na przeglądzie badań weryfikujących ten związek. Wskazano również na problematykę wpływu kultury na tworzenie się wiedzy potocznej na temat psychopatii. Wnioski płynące z przeprowadzonej analizy mogą się okazać przydatne zarówno w rozważaniach nad relacją nauka-media-społeczeństwo, jak i stanowić inspirację do dalszych poszukiwań badawczych dotyczących specyfiki obrazu osobowości psychopatycznej, którego nośnikiem jest kultura.
Culture is one of the salient sources shaping social perception of mental disorders. The way that mentally disordered people are portrayed in media, TV, movies and pop culture reflects in common beliefs and social attitudes toward them. Undoubtedly, psychopathy falls within the realm of these disorders, the cultural depiction of which is increasingly presented to the mass audience. This article endeavors to explore whether the portrayal of psychopaths in modern culture aligns with scientific perspectives and research on psychopathic personality traits. Drawing on a review of pertinent research, the analysis delves into the relationship between cultural representations and scientific understanding. Additionally, it highlights the impact of cultural influences on public knowledge of psychopathy. The conclusions derived from this analysis could prove valuable not only in the exploration of the interplay between science, media, and society, but also in stimulating further inquiry into the distinct portrayal of psychopathy evident in cultural contexts.

Jako mem – kulturowy replikator – baśń o Śnieżce ma wysoki potencjał wirusowy w rozumieniu Jacka Zipesa. Badania prowadzone nad tym tekstem kultury wykazały obecność kilkuset jego wersji na kilku kontynentach, przy czym najbardziej znany wariant literacki to ten Grimmowski. W artykule koncentrujemy się na analizie porównawczej wampirycznych wcieleń Śnieżki w trzech utworach literackich: opowiadaniach Snow, Glass, Apples (Szkło, śnieg i jabłka) Neila Gaimana (1994) i Red as Blood (Czerwona jak krew) Tanith Lee (1983) oraz powieści Blood and Snow (Krew i śnieg) Rashelle Workman (2012). Wykazują one wyraźne powinowactwa z wariantem Grimmowskim: czy to na poziomie implicytnym, poprzez wykorzystanie skanonizowanych przez tę wersję składników fabularnych, estetycznych itp., czy to eksplicytnym, poprzez bezpośrednie wskazówki paratekstualne i metafikcjonalne. Podejmujemy zatem próbę uzupełnienia stanu badań nad popkulturowymi wizerunkami wampira, a jednocześnie – wpisania się w nurt rozwijających się w naszym kraju studiów grimmologicznych.
As a meme—a cultural replicator—the fairy tale about Snow White has high viral potential in Jack Zipes’s understanding. Research conducted on this cultural text has revealed the presence of its several hundred versions on several continents, with the best-known literary variant being the Grimms’ one. In this paper, we focus on the comparative analysis of the vampiric incarnations of Snow White in three literary works: the short stories Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman (1994) and Red as Blood by Tanith Lee (1983), and Rashelle Workman’s novel Blood and Snow (2013). They show clear affinities with the Grimms’ variant: whether at the implicit level, using plot, aesthetic, and components canonized by this version, or at the explicit level, through direct paratextual and metafictional clues. Thus, we make an attempt to add to the state of research on popular culture images of the vampire, and at the same time to join the current of Grimmological studies developing in our country.

This contribution focuses on analysing political communication in Italy during the 2022 national elections, with particular attention to the TikTok platform, where prominent Italian political leaders have appeared. To this end, we used a combination of social analysis tools, including Fanpage Karma and Blogmeter Live Insight. The collected data were scrutinized using a multidisciplinary approach that combines Political Communication Theory and Media Analysis. The aim is to explore the role of pop culture in political communication and understand how this phenomenon influences political participation and users’ choices. Furthermore, the possible consequences of the growing popularity of pop political communication on political representation are examined, as well as whether this is a momentary or long-lasting phenomenon.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie twórczości Pawła Jaszczuka, który dzięki swoim dokonaniom stał się reprezentatywny, zarówno dla literatury kryminalnej, jak i dla środowiska Warmii i Mazur. Od wielu lat pisze powieści kryminalne, przyczyniając się do rozwoju odmian gatunku, a jednocześnie korzystając z tej formy, porusza ważne współcześnie tematy. W jego utworach widać także przebieg pewnego procesu: rozpoczynając od narracji historycznej, w której ważne miejsce pełniła przeszłość, coraz częściej zabiera głos w sprawie teraźniejszości i jej wyznaczników: dominacji polityki w życiu, rozprzestrzeniania się kultury masowej, rozpadu rodziny czy wszechobecnego ageizmu. Przedstawienie jego powieści kryminalnych ma wykazać, że w jego metodzie twórczej z jednej strony widoczna jest tendencja do eksponowania tematów związanych z przeszłością, a z drugiej strony mechanizm łączenia narracji historycznej z wątkami popkulturowymi.
The aim of the article is to present the work of Paweł Jaszczuk, an author of crime novels associated with the Warmia and Mazury region. He was the laureate of the second edition of the Grand Caliber Award in 2005. The presentation of his crime novels is to show that in his creative method, on the one hand, there is a visible tendency to emphasize topics related to the past, and on the other hand, the mechanism of combining historical narrative with pop culture threads.

Koncepcja reżyserskiego teatru operowego, realizowana od lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku głównie w krajach niemieckojęzycznych, zwróciła uwagę odbiorców popkultury na gatunek opery. Propozycje operowego Regietheater charakteryzowały się wyraźnym odwrotem od stylu tradycyjnych spektakli, zdominowanych przez elegancję i konwencjonalną reżyserię. Można więc powiedzieć, że stanowiły one formę ucieczki od tautologii konwencji operowych w popkulturowe konteksty. O ile tradycyjna opera barokowa i klasyczna łatwo poddawała się unowocześnieniu, to w przypadku dzieł Giuseppe Verdiego podejście takie okazało się skomplikowane, gdyż realistyczne utwory włoskiego mistrza sprzęgły się trwale z sytuacją historyczno-społeczną i polityczną jego czasów. Tym bardziej interesujące i warte przeanalizowania są te propozycje reżyserskie odnoszące się do jego dzieł, w których nawiązania do popkultury stanowią istotny element spektakli. Podjęta w artykule analiza koncepcji reżyserskich (takich twórców jak Mariusz Treliński, Christopher Alden, Robert Carsen, Peter Konwitschny i Hans Neuenfels) to próba wyznaczenia kilku trajektorii, zarysowujących się w ramach ogólnej strategii ucieczki od tautologii charakteryzującej wcześniejsze realizacje Verdiowskich dzieł operowych.
The concept of director’s opera theater, applied since the 1970s mainly in German-speaking countries, brought the genre of opera to the attention of pop-culture audiences. Regietheater operas proposed a clear turn away from the style of traditional productions, marked by elegance and conventional directing. Thus, one could say that they were a form of escape from the tautology of operatic conventions into pop-cultural contexts. While traditional Baroque and classical opera easily lent itself to modernizing approaches, the task proved more complicated in the case of Giuseppe Verdi’s realistic works, permanently coupled to the socio-historical and political situation and aesthetics of his time. This makes it all the more interesting and worthwhile to analyze directorial approaches which resulted in pop-cultural references featuring prominently in the performances of Verdi’s works. Analyzing the concepts of directors such as Mariusz Treliński, Christopher Alden, Robert Carsen, Peter Konwitschny, and Hans Neuenfels, the article attempts to delineate several specific trajectories within the general strategy of escaping tautology, which characterized earlier productions of the Italian master’s operas.

Tematem artykułu jest obecność dalekowschodniej wrażliwości pejzażowej w najnowszych popkulturowych realizacjach audiowizualnych. Autorkę interesują ślady takiego postrzegania czasu i przestrzeni, które ukonstytuowało tradycyjne chińskie, japońskie i koreańskie strategie krajobrazowe. W tym celu analizie poddane zostają seriale The Untamed (2019), Kingdom (2019–) oraz Barakamon (2014). Uformowane na gruncie kultury popularnej i obliczone na kontakt z szeroką publicznością, stanowią one, zdaniem autorki, świadectwo żywotności dalekowschodnich tradycji pejzażowych, a sposób, w jaki ich twórcy wykorzystują możliwości oferowane przez filmowe medium, nasuwa skojarzenia z rozwiązaniami charakterystycznymi dla orientalnego malarstwa.
The subject of the article is the presence of Far Eastern landscape sensibility in recent pop-cultural audiovisual productions. The author is interested in traces of such perceptions of time and space that have constituted traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean landscape strategies. To this end, she analyses three TV/web series: The Untamed (2019), Kingdom (2019–) and Barakamon (2014). Formed on the basis of popular culture and calculated to connect with a wide audience, they are, according to the author, a testament to the vitality of Far Eastern landscape traditions, and the way their creators exploit the possibilities offered by the cinematic medium brings to mind solutions characteristic of oriental painting.

Książka „Oblicza antybohatera” przedstawia inną wizję antybohaterów niż ta powszechnie przyjęta. Celem autorów monografii jest zerwanie z postrzeganiem antybohatera jako złej i zdeprawowanej osoby. Jest to raczej złożona, skomplikowana istota. Szczególnie godnym uwagi jest temat porównania antybohatera do zwykłego człowieka pozbawionego heroizmu.
The book “Faces of the Antihero” presents a different vision of antiheroes than is commonly accepted. The aim of the authors of the monograph is to break with the perception of the antihero as a bad and depraved person. Rather, it is a complex, complicated entity. Particularly noteworthy is the theme of comparing an antihero to an ordinary man stripped of heroism.

Comic books are increasingly being used as a material for creating theatre plays. In Poland, first theatre adaptations of comics appeared in the mid-20th century, but on Broadway, comic strips have provided source material for theatre plays since its outsets in the late 1800s. In this paper I present a short history of the most important comic book adaptations for the theatre in Poland, with an emphasis on plays based on a Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski’s series Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek. I ponder upon the connotations between comic books and music, and bring into consideration many different forms that comic book adaptations can take. Above all, I analyse in details a few examples (Polish productions Staś i Zła Noga [Staś and the Bad Leg] by Bartłomiej Błaszczyński and Kajko i Kokosz by Marta Ogrodzińska, and an American production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark by Julie Taymor) for the purpose of discussing the strategies of putting the comic book stories onto the stage and the difficulties involved with the process.

Reflecting on the many challenges facing Christianity as a religion, and particularly Christian philosophy as a way of thinking in modern, strange and unfamiliar times, one encounters time and again the grim realization that many of such challenges are simplyprovided by the current culture, the cultural sphere. Without idealizing Europe’s Christocentric culture and remembering that it was not homogeneous, we must recognize that it once existed, it was the ruling cultural norm. Today, such norms are indeed very different and vary greatly depending on the geographic region we have in mind and change from decade to decade. After the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, modernity and the postmodern era, we observe that what governs our cultural world today is pluralism more than anything else. But there are still some traces of Christocentrism in our culture and in what it has become during this period, namely popular culture. Among other aspects, research has focused on the analysis of one idea – that of the Christ-figure, which has come a long way from theology to culture to pop culture over the centuries. In this article, I will try to show why this complicated legacy can be seen, at least in part, as a challenge to Christianity in light of contemporary Christian philosophy.

Opis:
Creating patriotic songs in the Arab countries is very common. They can represent different types of music, can be connected to special occasions or be created without them, just from the ‘need a heart’. The author of the article has been doing research on contemporary Egyptian patriotic songs for years. On the basis of her results, she has decided to divide all the analysed songs into the those created by Egyptians for Egyptians and in addition created by other artists for Egypt and its citizens. The job of the latter she calls ‘patriotic songs’ as well and divided them into two main groups which are connected with the way they identify themselves. The article presents the results of the analysis of selected songs released by United Arab Emirates’ artists for Egypt. The article’s author’s goal was to check the songs’ topics and which one of the previously mentioned groups they represent. She also mentions the figure of Hussain Al Jassmi, the most popular, in recent years, Emirati singer creating patriotic songs for Egypt. She analysed the songs on the basis of the songs’ topics and combined it with the contemporary relations between United Arab Emirates and Egypt while mentioning their origins historically. All of this allowed her to reach the conclusions presented in the article.
Создание патриотических песен в арабских странах очень распространено. Они могут представлять разные стили музыки, могут быть связаны с особыми случаями или созданы без них, просто из «сердце нужно». Автор статьи на протяжении многих лет занимается исследованием современных египетских патриотических песен. На основании своих результатов она решила разделить все проанализированные песни на те, которые созданы египтянами для египтян, а также созданы другими исполнителями для Египта и его граждан. Работу последних она также называет «патриотическими песнями» и разделяет их на две основные группы, связанные с тем, как они себя идентифицируют. В статье представлены результаты анализа избранных песен, выпущенных артистами Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов для Египта. Целью автора статьи было проверить тематику песен и какую из ранее упомянутых групп они представляют. Она также упоминает фигуру Хусейна Аль-Джассми, самого популярного в последние годы эмиратского певца, создающего патриотические песни для Египта. Она проанализировала песни на основе их тем и объединила их с современными отношениями между Объединенными Арабскими Эмиратами и Египтом, упомянув при этом их историческое происхождение. Все это позволило ей прийти к выводам, представленным в статье.

The objective of the article is an attempt to interpret the character/figure/symbol of Jesus by references to miscellaneous cultural texts. First, the author describes the most significant aspects of Piotr Augustyniak’s essay Jezus Niechrystus, emphasizing their originality and rebelliousness, especially towards the Christian doctrine. In latter part of the article, selected fragments of Zbigniew Masternak’s film novella Jezus na prezydenta are analysed. Further, the author acknowledges timelessness of Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera. In the recapitulation, the author discerns constant craving for Jesus, perceiving it as a desirable response, since – according to Kołakowski’s and Augustyniak’s message – teachings of the carpenter from Nazareth constitute an abiding code of our culture.

La ilustración costumbrista del siglo XIX en Colombia se concentró en la representación de las expresiones culturales nacionales. Desde el análisis iconográfico de dos ilustraciones representativas, realizadas por Ramón Torres Méndez en ese periodo, identificaremos elementos que sirvieron para la construcción de una identidad cultural. Los elementos que conforman dichas expresiones, sin embargo, son el resultado de una mezcla de otras formas de expresión cultural; europeas, americanas y africanas. Este mestizaje, siempre presente, se extiende hasta nuestros días y se puede apreciar en manifestaciones más contemporáneas como el pop, en particular, el movimiento del rock en español en la década de 1990.
The costumbrista illustration of the 19th century in Colombia, after independence, focused on the representation of national cultural expressions. From the iconographic analysis of two representative illustrations, made by Ramón Torres Méndez in that period of time, it is possible to identify elements that contribute to the construction of a cultural identity. The elements that make up these expressions, however, are the result of a mixture of other forms of cultural expression, namely European, American, and African. This miscegenation, always present, extends even today and can be seen in more contemporary manifestations such as pop, in particular, of which is the key focus of this article.
