Opis:
Environmental pollution has resulted in several health and physiological problems in both plants and animals. This has witnessed growing number of models for assessment purposes. Some of these provide useful information, and reduce large data for easier understanding by policy-makers. In the current study of pollution, we used data from four locations: Oil Market, Trans Amadi, Borrokiri and GRA in Port Harcourt and a control taken from Federal Land Resource Umuahia (FLRU). A total of 25 composite soil samples were analyzed for physicochemical parameters and heavy metals, by means of a 969 Unicam AAS model series. The data obtained were then subjected to index models. Results showed iron (Fe) to be most abundant metal, ranging from 10.44 to 19.54 mg/kg, then Ni (8.03 to 13.6mg/kg), Cd (3.96 to 5.41 mg/kg), Pb (1.36 to 7.64 mg/kg), Zn (0.09 to 7.24 mg/kg), Cu (0.16 to 0.32) and As (0.07 to 0.11 mg/kg). All metal concentrations were below permissible limits set by NESRA. Contamination factor (Cf) and Igeo revealed moderate to heavy contamination by Cd and Zn. Anthropogenicity revealed that increasing metals in the environment are largely from anthropogenic inputs. The Pollution Index revealed that soils were unpolluted (PLI < 1) with the heavy metals. Furthermore, the Sodium absorption ratio showed that the soils are less sodic and could be good soils for plant growth. All four sites showed a linear relationship between anthropogenicity and geoaccumulation indexes, and so both indexes furnish basically the same information However, pollution from these metals in the study area should be under routine check for possible pollution in the near future, as some metals showed elevated concentrations above background values.

Opis:
Municipal refuse may increase heavy metal concentration in soil, even at low levels, and their resulting long-term cumulative health effects are among the leading health concerns all over the world. In this study, we investigated the concentration of heavy metals in soils and edible plant leaves grown in an abandoned dumpsite along Akachi road in Owerri municipality. The soil samples were collected at each plot using a soil auger at the depth of 0-10 cm. Leaves of dominant edible plant species were selected and collected from each sample plot. The samples were dried in an oven with forced air at 40 °C, milled to fine powder then digested with 10 ml concentrated HNO3 and 5 ml concentrated HClO4 and were analyzed for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Al, and Zn, using an H183200 MultiParameter Bench Photometer. Result showed that metals in in the sampled soils included (in order of quantity) Cr: 150-280 >Fe: 116.50-203 >Cu: 12.4-18.8 >Mn: 0-20 >Al: 0.08-0.16 >Zn: 0-1.4 mg kg-1 Dw. Moreover, levels of metals in the edible plant leaves are in the order of: Zn>Fe>Cu>Al>Mn>Cr. Zn, in particular, was higher than FAO/WHO recommended limits. Still, application of Pollution Load Index and Ecological risk models showed that the area is unpolluted and safe for use. Daily Metal Intake estimates indicated that zinc is mostly consumed from the plant species. The trends in Transfer Factor for the heavy metal in vegetable samples studied were in order: Zn>Al>Cu>Mn>Fe>Cr. Therefore, abandoned solid waste dumpsites contained significant concentrations of heavy metals which are later absorbed and accumulated by plants growing it.

Opis:
Risk assessment plays an essential role in the protection of groundwater resources, especially in the regions of potential contamination sources. The present research was aimed at assessing the risk of groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the Tychy-Urbanowice municipal landfill systems (southern Poland), using the contamination index tool. Groundwater samples from the Quaternary Aquifer were collected from 22 piezometers located near the former landfill site (currently closed) and the new sealed landfill site during a monitoring period from 1995 to 2015. Extremely high values (1700) of the groundwater contamination index were observed in a piezometer that captures water beneath the abandoned landfill. Very high index values (154 or 216) were also noticed in piezometers located in the groundwater outflow from the landfill site. Results of interpolation for individual piezometers, which capture only the upper or lower part of an aquifer, are unrepresentative. The interpolation for the mean values of the contamination index increased the groundwater risk assessment.

Opis:
Groundwater meets the majority portion of drinking water needs, particularly in the rural area of Bangladesh. Groundwater has been continuously contaminated by potentially harmful metals as a result of natural processes as well as some anthropogenic activities, creating a variety of health impacts. The current research aimed to evaluate the naturally occurring level of metal contamination and the human health risk associated with deep groundwater in the Hatiya Island. Because of the arsenic, iron, and salinity problem in shallow groundwater, the inhabitants of the Hatiya Island use deep groundwater. During the field investigation, no shallow tubewells were observed; therefore, only deep groundwater samples were collected. The total sample size collected throughout the Hatiya island was 17. Five metals (Zn, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Cu) were analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The concentrations of studied potential risky metals were ranked as follows: Mg > Zn > Fe >Mn> Cu. The detected values of all metals except Fe were found within the drinking water limits of WHO (2017), BIS (2012), and BDWS (1997), where only 29.41% of the Fe sample exceeded the standard drinking limits. According to the metal evaluation index (MEI) and degree of contamination (Cd), the groundwater of the study area is free from contamination but the metal pollution index (MPI) and nemerow pollution index (NI) exhibited little pollution in the mid-western part of the study area. The hazard quotient (HQ) values revealed no oral and dermal health risk for individual metals (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn). On the other hand, the hazard index (HI) values exhibited no risk for combined metals as none of the values exceeded the safety limit value of 1. According to the HQ and HI results, the deep groundwater on Hatiya Island is non-carcinogenic and risk-free for children and adults. However, children were more susceptible to oral health risks than adults. In contrast, adults were more vulnerable to dermal health risks than children.

Opis:
On the Holy Cross Mountains (southern Poland), located within the tectonic zone of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ), numerous former quarries exist, including those of Cambrian quarzitic sandstones and sandstones with pyrite veins. This article presents the results of geochemical studies on the waters of the acidic mine pit lake Podwiśniówka (with an area of 1.5 ha and a maximum depth of 7.0 m) conducted in 2018. The tests were carried out in a vertical water column (every 1 m) in the central part of pit lake. The mean concentration of metals/metalloids, determined using inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS), was found to form the following sequence in decreasing order: As> Cu> Ni> Co> Cr> Zn> U> Pb> Cd> Tl. With increasing depth, there was a general upwards trend in the concentrations of all the determined elements. In all cases, the average value of the single pollution index in the water column greatly exceeds the very strong level in relation to the geochemical background of surface waters globally (As – above 1250 times). The integrated pollution index for the ten trace elements in the water column increases with depth, and its average value exceeding 250 times the highest reference level. At the same time, the cluster analysis carried out showed the existence of two distinct depth zones in the pit lake: upper (0–4 m) and lower (5–7 m), differing in the scale of the water pollution.

Opis:
Surface water is subject to strong anthropogenic pressures caused by the development and the extension of the agricultural activities and also by the industrial and domestic activities. Pollution is a major environmental problem due to discharges into rivers and the excessive use of agricultural fertilizers add to that the discharges from urban and industrial sources. The aim of this study is to assess the quality and the state of the organic pollution of surface water in the Kébir wadi east, based on the Water Quality Index (WQI) and the Organic Pollution Index (OPI) during six sampling campaigns carried out between April and September of the year 2011. Seven stations were studied along the Kébir wadi east downstream from the Mexa Dam. The results are visualized by the use of GIS through making thematic maps. They revealed that half of the stations show excellent to good water quality and moderated organic pollution except the stations S3, S6 and S4, that have poor water quality and high pollution at S3 and S6 respectively, and non-potable water with very high organic pollution at S4. The anthropogenic environmental deterioration recorded in the wadi is the result of the use of nitrogen and phosphate agricultural fertilizers and especially, the discharge of untreated domestic and industrial wastewater from neighbouring agglomerations. The seasonal variation remains discrete and reflects a slight tendency to the deterioration of the waters of El Tarf region during the low waters of the summer period.

Opis:
Statistical analyses of data concerning the phytoplankton standing crop and biomass were applied as a tool for assessing pollution in El-Dekhaila Harbour. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed a succession of three clusters associated with salinity and temperature variations. The first and third clusters comprised mainly diatoms and dinoflagellates. The second cluster, richer in species, was dominated by brackish water cyanophytes, chlorophytes and euglenophytes. The diversity index ranged from 0.08 to 2.41. A high diversity was associated with high evenness, reflecting the multidominance pattern of cluster (2). On the other hand, multiple correlations between salinity and standing crop, richness and evenness, were negative and significant, but positive with the diversity index. The ABC curve showed that the k-dominance curve for numerical abundance extends above that for the biomass when clusters 1an d 3 are dominant. Both curves coincide more or less for another segment of the curve but when cluster 2 becomes dominant the numerical abundance curve runs below that of the biomass. Such a pattern may indicate unpolluted or moderate to heavily polluted conditions in El-Dekhaila Harbour. The present study reveals that the combination of univariate and multivariate analysis with the ABC curve provides a promising tool for the characterization of phytoplankton dynamics under stress conditions. On the other hand, the phytoplankton community in El-Dekhaila Harbour is stressed not by the inflow of brackish water but rather by the inflow of sea water. This is indicated by the higher diversity and evenness, and by the ABC curve during the dominance of cluster (2).

The paper aims at presentation of the effect of changes in the catchment area management on the value of water quality physicochemical indices along the length of the Iwoniczanka stream, which flows through Iwonicz-Zdrój, one of the oldest health resorts in Poland. Analyses of 14 water quality indices were conducted from November 2013 to May 2014 in five measurement points: two situated in the upper course of the stream – in forest areas, two located in the area of Iwonicz-Zdrój town, and one below the rural built-up area. On the basis of the conducted data analysis it was found that the mean values of pH, electrolytic conductivity, sulphates, calcium, total iron and manganese were increasing with the course of flowing water, as evidenced by the water enrichment in substances which had their sources in built-up areas. On average, the highest values of biogenic indices and chlorides but the lowest values of oxygen indices were registered immediately below the location of drain collector from the closed sewage treatment plant, which resulted in pollution of the analysed stream bed with the substances previously drained from the treatment plant. Water flowing through the forest areas had the maximum ecological potential in the built-up areas and due to phosphate concentrations it was classified to class II and then, due to self-purification, returned to the physicochemical parameters appropriate for class I water. The conducted hydro-chemical tests confirmed a significant negative effect of built-up areas on the quality of the flowing waters.
