Opis:
The trend of fantasy art originating from the interest of the ethnographical and historical researches as well as from the studies of religious and archaeology came into existence in Poland in the 1840s and 1850s. There were few Polish artists who dealt with the fantasy art; Ignacy Gierdzicjewski, Artur Grottger and Witold Pruszkowski are among the most important ones. The works of the fantasy trend discussed problems of the life and the death, the here after life, demons, fairy-tales, and folktales. In the fantasy paintings some typical for the romantic iconography cemetery motives such as skulls, crossbones, sepulchral crosses and ruins of castles are present. Gierdzicjewski was painting gloomy, demonical, hallucinatory visions of the Mazovian’s plains, haunted by the suffering souls. Pruszkowski’s fantasy paintings were full of realism, firmly connected with the reality, in such a manner that the nightmarish scenes seemed to be eternally included into human’s existence. Grottger was linking up fantasy events and the ones connected with the fights for national independence, wars, and misery of life in the subjugated motherland. The fantasy art used iconographic motives coming from far religious traditions, pagan, popular beliefs, fairy-tales and myths.

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and his Russian colleague Sergey Lukyanenko are considered to be two best-known living science-fiction and fantasy authors from their countries at the turn of the century. What is more, their popularity is not only connected with their homeland, but also spreads to other countries. As we can observe, Lukyanenko is the most important living Russian modern SF&F author in Poland, whereas Sapkowski is one of the best-known Polish contemporary writers in Russia (not only SF&F, but in general - right after Lem and Chmielewska). It is interesting to take a close look at their popularity and reveal how their works connect and influence many different branches of culture in Poland and Russia. It is impossible to take into consideration all of their works, so we concentrate on Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga and Lukyanenko’s four urban fantasy novels about The Night Watch and The Day Watch. On this basis we present their influence on such cultural areas as film, comic books and computer games. We also describe the reception of this influence and its results in Poland and Russia.

The article presents how the discursive discrimination of homosexuals serves nationalism in the contemporary Polish society. Following a brief conceptual location of homophobia within the ideological movement of nationalism, the exemplar homophobic discourse of the Polish nationalists, i.e. that of the League of Polish Families (LPR), is examined through the interdisciplinary method of critical discourse analysis (CDA). In the theoretical part, the sexual minority is applied the status of the “stranger” discussed in cultural sociology; the nationalist is in turn conceptualized as a social-phenomenological actor, who perceives and categorizes the sexual “stranger” by using the knowledge circulating at the Schützean lifeworld. The CDA of the discriminatory discourse of LPR politicians, who represent such homophobic nationalists, attests that homosexuals are mobilized as the “fantasmatic” stranger in today’s Poland.

The article discusses issues connected with Slavic fantasy literature presented as a reflectionof mythical thinking. The examples given are works of Polish and Russian writers who create inthis genre. In order to discuss fantasy literature it is neccessary to define the genre itself, which is not aneasy task. In the article, the fantasy term is used to describe a genre of literature or film, in whichone of the most important parts of the story, keynote, time, place of action, characters andcircumstances will be magic and supernatural phenomena. The Slavic fantasy appeared in Russia and Poland in a similar period and it still developstoday. One of the factors that influenced the development of this genre was the search for Slavicroots, national identity. Those fantasy stories and novels are writings which clearly refer to thehistory and culture of the old Slavic peoples . The Slavic fantasy contains unparelled care for therealities of the epoch which is why it is sometimes called parahistoric. The article presents the typology of the Slavic fantasy by Tadeusz A. Olszański, according towhom there are three ways of presenting the Slavic plot: language stylization, culture stylizationand the so called independent worlds.Slavic fantasy is based on broad ethnographic material, especially Slavic demonology. Thecharacters of gods, spirits and beings often have a positive character. The mythical thinking in literature can be seen on several levels. On the level of the worlddescribed it takes the form of a prophecy, intervention of the gods into the lives of mortals. On theconstruction level, it shows in the way the narration is made. Third level is the heroes and theircompanions - in that case the most native mythological element of Polish and Russian fantasy isthe said demonology.

The author raises the issues of emotion indirectly - through the exploration of projection, i.e., dreams and fantasies about free time. This material shows that free time appears above all as an emotional space, as it is much easier to experience than to define. These fantasies and dreams, although divorced from reality, refer to it directly and convey important information about the consciousness, imagination and reflections of Polish society; they combine with daily realities and reflect their basic tendencies. The analysis confirms the continuing topicality of a thesis presented at the beginning of the nineties on the pragmatisation of Polish society’s consciousness and its orientation toward material and consumer values. In addition, it can be stated that the sphere of dreams or distant projects is becoming a sort of security vent or protective mechanism which allows persons to deal with serious problems of a personal and social nature.

The article focuses on Internet magazines which specialise in fantasy. Nowadays many writers make their debut via Internet periodicals, although writers who are already well known to the public also publish there. It should be noted that online magazines are often regarded as a valuable form of artistic, journalistic and critical activity. Internet periodicals are often ephemeral creations whose existence can be put to an end thanks to many factors: when the formula runs out; when the editors no longer take interest in their work; when it is impossible to continue the enterprise because of various reasons which have nothing to do with publishing problems. Internet magazines can exist in both traditional and electronic form. Their role, i.a., is to provide information on literary and publishing activities related to the subject matter of the periodical. Online magazines can hold patronage over cultural events; promote writings of particular authors; engage in critical, literary and at times even publishing activities.

It is also worth mentioning, that process of “transition” of neologisms created by the author, between different texts has quite dynamic nature. That is because it might be infinite. In the first part the paper identifies the sources of the author’s lexical neologisms (e.g. direwolf, septon, or proper names). The second part focuses on the methods used for neologism translation in the Polish and Slovene versions of the novel (translations by Paweł Kruk and Boˇstjan Gorenc), and finds differences between the two translations. The paper describes translation techniques such as borrowing, equivalency, and the creation of a neologism.

Opis:
The present article discusses works by Łukasz Orbitowski and Paweł Demirski, two authors representing the young generation of Polish writers whose texts stand in the opposition to a worn-out and highly ritualised trend of national-symbolic interpretations of memory. The debunking literary strategy of both authors relies heavily on the aesthetics of subversion. Choosing for Spectres the genre of historical fantasy, Łukasz Orbitowski provides himself with a vast space of artistic freedom, using it for free reinterpretations and continuations of the existing narratives of memory. The theatre of Paweł Demirski and Monika Strzępka, in turn, is a theatre of linguistic performance which clashes sequences of language that transmit historical imagination and national self-awareness of Poles. In Demirski’s play theatre becomes a medium of protest against fossilised forms of memory, where graphically staged painful trauma is deprived of the aura of sacrum. Triviality and vulgarism of language demolish both the elevated phrases of the national culture of memory and the naïve pop-cultural representations of war and the Warsaw Uprising.

Starting with a reconstruction of the views of philosophers and aesthetes on the topic of fantastic images, the Author aims to characterize fantasy art. She describes the reception of this art in Poland, characterizes its determinants, and defines the trend, indicating the most important examples of artistic works. While exploring this approach, she refers to Waldemar Okoń, Jerzy Malinowski, Tomasz Gryglewicz, and Antoni Smuszkiewicz. The convention of fantasy art appears to be a vital, developmental quality, an expression of the rebellion of consciousness against simplifications.

The article Extra-educational Bestiary? Transformation of Animal Paradise Motif in Polish Young Adult Fantastic Literature is an attempt to define a new argument for a possibility of animal immortality on the basis of fantasy literature for children and young adults. For this purpose, Ewelina Rąbkowska analyzes three examples of the theme of animal paradise in Polish animal fantasy novels for children and young adults. The main hypothesis of the article is that intuition of fantasy literature tells—in the same way as (defined in some previous papers) “poetical intuition”—stories about significant relationships between humans and non-humans, which last longer than single life. The author argues that contemporary fantasies for young adults are examples of crossing the borders of a traditional anthropocentric point of view. They show a new, post-humanist discourse about animals, change the language, narrative strategies and—what is most important—traditional didactic purposes of the text.

The online community of science fiction and fantasy fans constitutes a rich source of material for analysing reader response to translations as its members often reflect not only on the books they read but also on the quality of their translations. The Polish translations of Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men are a good example of translations which evoked ample response online, with criticism focusing on the reasons for initially not employing the usual translator of the Discworld series, the treatment of names and dialect in the translation, and the issues connected with defining the target reader of the text and adjusting the text to their needs. The analysis of online reactions shows that translation solutions are considered problematic by readers especially when the reasons behind them are not clear.
Polskie przekłady The Wee Free Men Terry’ego Pratchetta są dobrym przykładem tłumaczeń, które zainspirowały wiele komentarzy.

The analysed texts are fragments of the Polish and English translations of the short story Der Sandmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the leading representative of late German Romanticism, with the special attention paid to their correspondence with the source text. The analysed translations are the Polish one by Felicjan Faleński, made in 1867 and the English one by John Oxenford, made in 1844. For the purpose of analysing the text, the article employs Todorov’s theory of the fantastic for building an interpretation model of the Romantic short story Der Sandmann.
