Discourse markers (DMs), represented by words and phrases such as but, you know, moreover, have for many years been a widely discussed topic in linguistics in Poland and abroad. However, no attention has been paid yet to DMs in teaching Polish as a foreign language (PFL). The paper explores this neglected issue by analysing the modes of presentation of DMs in the three most popular series of textbooks for teaching PFL (levels A1-B1). The textbooks were analysed manually to identify DMs and the ways in which they are taught. The results show that the textbooks differ in the number of DMs appearing in them. However, four common problematic aspects of the instruction of DMs in the analysed textbooks were identified: translation of DMs, usage of homographs of DMs, the mechanical nature of exercises and lack of sufficient input

Opis:
This paper presents an overview of the words belonging to the class of particles (as defined by SGPP (Nest Dictionary of Polish Particles)) used in textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language at initial stages and compares their set to the contents of the lexis lists prepared with glottodidactics and dictionaries for foreigners in mind. The usages of units such as chyba (probably), może (maybe), oczywiście (certainly), and na pewno (surely) in the textbook material were then confronted with their meanings and usages specifi ed in lexicographic studies in order to identify the adequacy of the lexicographic description. Attention was drawn to the non-uniform classifi cation of the units into lexeme classes, definition methods that are improper for unskilled users of Polish, lack of regularity in using particles in textbook texts and exercises teaching their usages. A compendium with the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic descriptions of the particles for the purposes of Polish glottodidactics was proposed.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienie ekspansji męskożywotnej końcówki -a w bierniku liczby pojedynczej w grupie rzeczowników nieżywotnych. Część tego typu form jest zgodna z normą wzorcową, np.: forda, pokera, golfa, borowika, inne natomiast występują wyłącznie w języku potocznym, np.: zęba, paznokcia, gwoździa. Niekiedy trudno jest rozstrzygnąć, która forma jest prawidłowa, np.: zamówić kotlet czy zamówić kotleta. Artykuł przynosi ponadto propozycje rozwiązań glottodydaktycznych oraz przedstawia dylematy dotyczące wskazanych kwestii.
The paper discusses the issue of the expansion of the masculine animate ending – a onto the group of inanimate nouns. Some of such forms are in agreement with the paradigmatic norm, others, on the other hand, appear only in colloquial language. It is at times difficult to establish which form is the correct one. The paper also puts forth proposals of methods of their teaching and presents some dilemmas concerning the abovementioned questions.

This paper presents an analysis of sentences with language units jeszcze (yet, still) and już (already, yet), contained in textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language at levels A1 and A2. The aim of the analysis was to distinguish the meanings of these units. At the lowest levels of command of Polish, analogy particles jeszcze and już and temporal exponents jeszcze and już are the most common units. This paper also proposes preliminary forms of defi nitions adapted to the pre-intermediate level of command of Polish.

The article presents research results on Teaching Polish as a Foreign Language textbooks. The language material of 28 books published in 1999-2009 has been analyzed. The analysis shows that Kraków and Warszawa are the most frequently used city specific names. Other cities are grouped into attractive spots with regard to their historic buildings, their landscape, localities associated with famous Poles and spots where important historical events took place. The textbooks also include names of geographical regions, lakes, rivers and mountain peaks. Moreover, Kowalski and Nowak are the most popular last names. And Jan the most frequent name .

The entire period 1944-2018 was divided chronologically into two parts: the period 1944-1989, which was the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), when Poland was part of the Socialist Bloc, led by the USSR, and the period 1989-2018, when the Polish authorities and society built a free and independent Republic of Poland in unison. In the former period, special attention is given to the period 1978-1990, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s election as Pope John Paul II first and the establishment and activity of the Solidarity movement next made Poland a country well-known and admired all over the world, which largely influenced the transformation of the awareness of the Polish community in many countries. All this constitutes a background for the presentation of the history of education of the Polish community abroad, foundation of schools of the Polish language and culture at numerous Polish institutions of higher education, with the University of Warsaw in the lead and fi nally, the process of developing Polish Studies abroad as well as the process of integrating Polish and foreign specialists in Polish studies in the period 1997-2018.

On the occasion of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1918, several papers have been written to depict the development and transformations of the Polish language over the period 1918–2018. However, none of the studies covered popularising Polish by emigrant communities in various countries around the world, preserving it and passing it down to new generations in a bilingual environment, and its teaching not only in ethnic schools but also in higher education institutions. This paper addresses the abovementioned issues by presenting relations between the Polish state and emigration communities in the period 1918–1939 first. A characteristic typical of this period was the fact that governmental authorities treated emigrants and their descendants as Poles around the world who may pursue the objectives of the Polish foreign policy. With this in mind, the World Union of Poles (Światpol) was established in 1934, which was opposed by representatives of the Polish American community. A further part of the paper presents the organisation of summer school of the Polish language and culture at the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków beginning from 1931, teaching of the Polish language in Polish schools abroad and aid provided to them by Poland, and finally, courses of Polish and programmes in Polish Studies offered at foreign universities.

Certification of the command of Polish as a foreign language is a phenomenon with an international reach and groundbreaking significance for the promotion and enhancement of the prestige of the Polish language across the world. The certifi cation system for the Polish language was created in 2004 and, in the face of new challenges, reformed in 2015. At present, it is the primary instrument of the migration policy of Poland, which gives rise to diffi culties in its functioning. This paper is an attempt at a comprehensive description of the phenomenon of state certification examinations. It discusses the scientifi c and legal grounds for the examinations, amendments introduced over years to the legislation regulating certification and their consequences, as well as describes and diagnoses the existing situation concerned with certification of the command of Polish.

In the first part of the article the possibilities of mutual influence between methodology of Polish language teaching and glottodidactics of Polish language are discussed. The idea of cultural program and cultural method designed to realize it is briefly presented here. In the second part of the article the idea of cultural program is discussed in diachronic aspect: the possibility of introducing teaching (presentation) of foreign culture as a part of foreign lan-guage teaching as well as Polish culture as a part of teaching Polish as a foreign language. The article concludes with some predictions concerning leading tendencies in glottodidactics of Polish language between 2011 and 2020.

The objective of the article is to present the achievements of genre studies that might be used in teaching Polish as a foreign language. Assuming that genres of speech are products of particular cultures, while teaching Polish to foreigners we should familiarize them with genre patterns typical of native users of Polish. A description of a genre pattern, based on a concept developed by Maria Wojtak, includes four aspects: structural, pragmatic, cognitive and stylistic. Realization of genre utterances may take the form of a canon variant, and alternative or adaptive variants. A few popular handbooks of Polish to foreigners have been analyzed in terms of presentation of genre patterns. In most works, teaching structural and stylistic aspects prevail, whereas less attention is paid to pragmatic or ontological description.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie osiągnięć genologii, które mogłyby zostać wykorzystane w glottodydaktyce polonistycznej. Wychodząc z założenia, że gatunki są wytworami kultury, ucząc cudzoziemców języka polskiego, należy zapoznawać ich z wzorcami gatunkowymi typowymi dla rodzimych użytkowników polszczyzny. Opis wzorca, zgodnie z koncepcją Marii Wojtak, obejmuje cztery aspekty opisu: strukturalny, pragmatyczny, poznawczy i stylistyczny. Realizacje wypowiedzi gatunkowych mogą przybierać formę wariantu kanonicznego, wariantów alternacyjnych lub adaptacyjnych. W artykule przeanalizowano kilka popularnych podręczników do nauki jpjo pod kątem nauczania gatunków wypowiedzi. W większości prac przeważa nauczanie aspektu strukturalnego i stylistycznego wzorca, z mniejszą uwagą zwróconą na aspekt pragmatyczny i ontologiczny opisu.

According to its original purpose film providing entertainment since its invention but this function od movie does not eliminate its function utility film in education. Especially the film like no other media does not reflect reality as well and still makes people happy watching it. The article presents practical ways to use film in teaching Polish as a foreign language with concrete proposals films and grammar exercises, vocabulary, communication.

This article is dedicated to the presentation of an associative research aimed to discover the psycholinguistic causes of the errors made by East Slavic students learning Polish as a foreign language by enumerating the number of paradigmatic and syntagmatic associations. The research has shown that although foreign students already have an established lexical resource, the government of words, their connectivity in a sentence, has not been rooted in their language awareness yet.

Coursebooks, due to their printed form, rely on the graphic representation of language, i.e. writing. As the letters and sounds in Polish are not in full correspondence, the presentation of sounds becomes problematic. Not all authors of coursebooks of Polish as a foreign language are aware of this. The article looks at how the problems of sound production are approached in three chosen coursebooks Start 1, Hurra!!! Po polsku 1, Polski jest cool A1. Two of the three analysed coursebooks treat pronunciation as a customary addition to the course rather than a starting point to learning/teaching Polish.

Tekst jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie o rolę nauczyciela w procesie dydaktycznym, w którym uczestniczą dyslektyczni studenci. Zawiera także propozycje ćwiczeń ułatwiających akwizycję języka.
The article presents the influence of dyslexia on the process of the Polish language acquisition as well as a student’s psychical attitude during the process of learning. The author offers some helpful exercises and also attempts to answer to the question about the teacher’s input in supporting students and helping them to succeed despite helping their specific disorders.
