Lignite from the “‘Pątnów IV” deposit is mined in the Jóźwin IIB opencast by the Konin Lignite Mine. Within the exploited 1st Mid-Polish lignite seam, there are layers of sand with a thickness of over 5 m. Based on field observations and geological mapping, these sandy interbeddings are interpreted as deposits of two or three crevasse splays of different ages. Due to such a large thickness of sands, only the upper bench of the lignite seam is currently mined in the Jóźwin IIB opencast. On the other hand, the exploitation of the lower and middle lignite benches of this seam is unprofitable at present.

The moldavites are Miocene tektites foundin Central Europe. Their presence in the Badenian sediments are rare due to fluvial reworking in the area. In the clay sediments of the Poznań Formation, in the Dębina profile, one moldavite was found, which is the fourth tektite from these sediments from Poland. It had dimensions of 14 X 10 X 8 mm and a weight of 1.03 gram. The glass surface was richly ornamented, and indicates a quick deposition, without any long-distance fluvial abrasion. Currently, depending on the age ofthe sediments in which they occur, two substrewn fields of Ries-same-age and redeposited moldavites were characterized in SW Poland.

The Badenian/Sarmatian boundary in the Central Paratethys has been traditionally identified by the faunal turnover recording an important environmental change possibly controlled by the change from marine to brackish conditions. The strata below the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary in the northern Carpathian Foredeep are included into the Pecten beds, and those above it into the Syndesmya beds. Foraminiferal study of the Babczyn 2 borehole which is one of the crucial sections in the northern Carpathian Foredeep, well-known for the depositional age of rhyolite tuff within the Pecten beds dated by Śliwiński et al. (2012) at 13.06 ±0.11 Ma, indicated that in fact the boundary occurs within the Syndesmya beds. This conclusion is based upon the rapid change from a stenohaline foraminiferal fauna to a euryhaline one, and the appearance of the species Anomalinoides dividens, the taxon regarded as the marker for the Sarmatian. In the Babczyn 2 and Cieszanów 1 (located ~2.5 km basinward of Babczyn 2) boreholes, Anomalinoides dividens appears 3.1–3.8 m above the replacement of stenohaline by euryhaline foraminifers. The calcareous nannoplankton study shows that the upper Badenian and the lower Sarmatian strata in the studied sections represent the NN6, undivided NN6-NN7, and NN7 zones.

Opis:
To date, 36 moldavites have been found in 9 sites from south-western Poland. The newest ones, i.e. 2 tektites, presented herein come from the Turów Mine in the Zittau Basin. Both moldavite specimens were collected from the fluvial sandy gravels of the Gozdnica Formation, of late Miocene age. Taking into account the macroscopic features of the studied glass, it should be assumed that one of them had been reworked over a maximum distance of several kilometres, while the other one had overcome a further reworking, not exceeding50 km though. The moldavites considered herein were most probably ejected from the Ries crater into the Zittau Basin within the Badenian sediments, later transported by the Lusatian Neisse river and finally redeposited within Pannonian sediments.

Opis:
In the Tomisławice opencast mine, owned by the Konin Lignite Mine, a relatively widespread (>1.5 km2) and thick (up to 80 cm) layer of clay occurs within the first mid-Polish lignite seam. These fine-grained sediments are interpreted as deposited in a long-lasting lake that existed in the mid-Miocene backswamp area. Due to the exploitation of this seam forelectricity production, interbeddings of clastic sediments significantly reduce the quality of lignite. Currently, lignite is mined together with the clays in the Tomisławice opencast mine. Such procedure in extreme cases, where the maximum. thickness of the clay layer is up to 80cm, increases/may increase the ash content of the entire lignite seam almost twice. Therefore, selective lignite mining would be recommended, i.e. without clays, which unfortunately is not practiced due to technological and financial reasons.

Opis:
The first Polish moldavites were discovered in 2012. This paper is a summary of the distribution and inventory of these Polish tektites. Up to the present, 28 moldavites have been described from seven different sandpits. These moldavites were deposited in the upper Miocene fluvial deposits of the Gozdnica Formation, as well as in the Pleistocene river terraces. Apart from a typical bottle green colour, moldavites also have other diagnostics features for this class of tektites, such as the presence of bubbles, inclusions oflechatelierite, as well as the same, homogeneous chemical composition. Fluvial redeposition was interpreted as the main process which determined moldavite distribution. Despite the most recent find of one moldavite specimen in Bielawy, all of these specimens indicate both Lusatian as well as sub-strewn Czech fields as their supply area.

Opis:
This study focuses on discussing the relationship between the accumulation of peat and its compaction in the overbank zone of the Miocene river system. The examined 2nd Lusatian lignite seam is characteristically interbedded with sandy deposits and these are less compressible than peat. Therefore, in favourable conditions such as those found at Chłapowo Cliff (on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Poland), it is possible to identify the effects of an even or uneven lowering of the mire surface, resulting from diversified compaction of the underlying phytogenic beds. The research problem was applied to two examples located close to each other within the lignite seam. The first case shows the accumulation of fresh peat layers of almost equal thickness, while the second one presents a reduction in the thickness of fresh peat beds over the fossilised channel-fill sandy body. Only the latter example allows us to calculate the peat-to-lignite compaction ratio. The results of the compaction ratio obtained, Cr ≈ 7.37, mean that the youngest, fresh peat layers were compacted at least 7 times, transforming them into lignite beds. However, such a high compaction value, estimated for the top layers of the Miocene mire, cannot be directly taken into account when reconstructing the total thickness of the peat seam prior to covering it with mineral overburden. The published peat-to-lignite compaction ratios, determined using other research methods, for the 2nd Lusatian lignite seam or its stratigraphic equivalents range from 1.7 to 6.0 in most cases, with averages of 2.2 to 4.0. The differences between the data in the literature and the results given in this paper are due to the fact that the process of peat/lignite compaction is ongoing and cumulative.

Opis:
A geological structural study has been conducted along the tectonic contact zone of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin (CCPB) and Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) in the eastern Podhale and western Spišska Magura areas. It concerned mostly the Central Carpathian Paleogene flysch strata and, to a lesser degree, the Upper Cretaceous rocks of the PKB. Tectonic deformation structures genetically related to the important tectonic boundary in question occur within a c. 1.5–2 km-wide strip of the Paleogene flysch rocks adjacent from the south to the PKB. Two parallel structural domains have been distinguished within this strip: the contact zone proper in the north and the peri-Pieniny monocline in the south. Most of the minor faults documented in the Paleogene flysch bear a record of dextral motion parallel to the contact zone. Some dextral-reverse oblique slip faults of NE-SW and W-E trends have also been recognized. Discrepancies in the orientation and sense of movement on strike-slip faults in the Paleogene flysch rocks and those in marlstones of the “klippen envelope” of the PKB were encountered. They probably reflect differences in the structural history of both the adjacent rock complexes, as the Upper Cretaceous deposits of the PKB must have experienced more deformation events and, in general, were affected by much more intense strain than those of the CCPB. Contractional structures, such as south-vergent reverse faults and recumbent folds which point to ca N-S tectonic shortening, have also been found in the Paleogene rocks. The entirety of the structural features found in the CCPB is characteristic of a transpressional regime. The regionally consistent coexistence of structures resulting from strike-slip movements and tectonic shortening, as well as features pointing directly to a transpressional regime, prove the transpressional dextral nature of the contact between the CCPB and PKB.

Opis:
The early Badenian interval in the Central Paratethys realm is characterized by a major marine transgression into the Pannonian and Carpathian Foredeep basins. In the western part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep, Badenian sedimentation started generally with conglomerates (Dębowiec Formation) passing into a thick succession of claystones and mudstones with rare sandstone interbeds (Skawina Formation). Profiles containing a full sequence of lower Badenian strata are relatively rare, and are mainly known from boreholes. In this paper, we present new results on samples taken from such a borehole (Kaczyce K2/07) located near the town of Cieszyn. We focus on reconstructing the chronology of the lower Badenian marine sediments at the beginning of the transgression in the Carpathian Foredeep (lower Skawina Fm.) using radio-isotopic dating (40Ar/39Ar) of a volcanoclastic layer (tuff and tuffite) and biostratigraphy of calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera. The weighted mean 40Ar/39Ar age for sanidine separates from the tuff provided an age of 14.27 ± 0.03 Ma. This age is consistent with the NN5 and MNN5a nannofossil zones determined in this study. Our foraminiferal assemblages show that the basal beds of the Skawina Formation up to the tuffites correspond to the Orbulina suturalis–Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone (according to Cicha et al., 1975) and cover the interval of the Lower Lagenidae Zone–lowermost Upper Lagenidae Zone (Grill, 1941). The petrographic data from the tuffite allow correlation of the tuffite from the Kaczyce K2/07 borehole to the level of the Chełmek Tuffite Bed (Alexandrowicz, 1997) providing a regional correlation horizon for future studies.

Opis:
In this article, the most recent moldavite discoveries in Poland and their host sediments are characterised and discussed. They were discovered at Lasów, located about 8 km north of Zgorzelec (Poland) and Görlitz (Germany), about 700 m from the Polish-German border, close to the Lusatian Neisse (Nysa) River. The tektites were collected from Vistulian (Wiechselian) glacial age sand and gravel of a closed quarry pit, associated with the river terraces. In the Lasów area, the moldavite-bearing sediments are Pleistocene in age and represent Lusatian Neisse terrace deposits. They were redeposited from the upper part of the drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse, probably washed out from the Miocene sediments that filled the Zittau Depression, the Berzdorf–Radomierzyce Depression, the Višňová Depression and the tectonically uplifted Izera Mts. and Działoszyn Depression. The erosion of Miocene deposit occured on a large scale in the uplifted foothills of the Upper Miocene Izera, Lusatia and Kaczawa complexes. The sediment cover was removed from the Działoszyn Depression. The drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse is the area where moldavites were formed by the Nördlinger Ries impact. The source area of moldavite is the same for the Miocene deposits around Gozdnica, as well as for the Pleistocene sediments at Lasów.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a study of crevasse splay deposits from the Miocene of central Poland near Konin. These mineral deposits occur within the 1st Middle-Polish lignite seam of Middle Miocene age, which is exploited from the Tomislawice lignite opencast mine. They consist of fine-grained sands with an admixture of plant detritus at the top and bottom layers, where the muddy-sandy clasts are present. The investigated crevasse splay deposits are predominantly massive or horizontally stratified, and they occasionally reveal small- to large-scale (planar, trough and ripple) cross-stratification. Thus, they are interpreted as representing dense gravity flows, sheet flows, and channelized flows of variable energy. The crevasse splay was formed subaerially during sudden flood conditions on the floodplain covered by a low-lying mire with predominant herbaceous vegetation. The description of the crevasse splay deposits from the Miocene of central Poland can be helpful in better understanding the sedimentation conditions of relatively thick lignite seams.

The Pogórska Wola palaeovalley of combined tectonic and erosional origin dissects the Mesozoic floor of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin to a depth exceeding 1200 m. It formed during Paleogene times presumably due to fluvial and submarine erosion, concentrated along a local pre-Late Badenian graben system. All members of the foredeep’s Badenian-Sarmatian sedimentary fill attain distinctly greater values inside the palaeovalley than on top of elevated plateaux on palaeovalley shoulders. The fill comprises the Early to Late Badenian sub-evaporite Skawina Formation, the laterally equivalent Late Badenian evaporite Krzyżanowice and Wieliczka formations and the supra-evaporite Late Badenian to Early Sarmatian Machów Formation. Over the plateaux and in the highest palaeovalley segment, the evaporites are developed in the sulphate facies Krzyżanowice Formation, whereas in the lower palaeovalley segments chloride-sulphate facies evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation occur. The rock salt-bearing rocks are involved in thrusting and folding at the Carpathian orogenic front, which helps to assess the lateral extent of the Wieliczka Formation in seismic records. The deep palaeotopographic position of the evaporites inside the palaeovalley, combined with their lithological and sedimentary features, point to their formation via subaqueous gravity flow-driven redeposition of originally shallow-water evaporites, preferentially halite-bearing, presumably combined with precipitation from sulphate and chloride brines at the palaeovalley floor. Both the redeposited sediments and the brines must have come from the adjacent plateaux and from a thrust-sheet top basin, approaching from the south on top of the Cretaceous-Paleogene Carpathian flysch thrust wedge.

Opis:
The present paper discusses the genesis of some deformation structures within Miocene lignite seams in Poland. These meso- to macro-scale deformation structures are the best developed in areas where the thickest lignite seams are exploited, that is, in the Bełchatów, Turów and Lubstów lignite opencast mines. They show a wide variety of structures such as high-angle inclined strata, normal and reverse faults and folds, fractures and clastic dikes. These deformation structures were not analysed in terms of the structural development of the lignite-bearing areas, but rather in the context of their origin. The high-angle inclination of clastic sedimentary strata clearly formed mainly as a result of vertical tectonic movements in the sub-Cenozoic basement, their currently measured dip angle being significantly higher than their natural angle of repose. All the observed normal and reverse faults cutting the Miocene strata are a clear example of syn- and/or post-depositional tectonics. The normal faults clearly indicate tensional tectonics while the reverse faults reflect compressional tectonics. In turn, the majority of folds occurring within the lignite seams are a result of peat/lignite compaction. However, one of the folds studied is predominantly the result of vertical displacements in the sub-Cenozoic basement. The en echelon fracture pattern may additionally indicate the horizontal component of these displacements. Finally, the most spectacular and debatable structures are clastic dikes. In this study the genesis of some of them is linked with the evolution of the graben’s marginal fault.

Zidentyfikowano 12 gatunków małżów: Nucula (Nucula) nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758), Lentipecten corneus denudatus (Reuss, 1867), Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791), Inaequicostata cf. politioanei (Jekelius, 1944), Obsoletiforma vindobonensis (Laskarew, 1903), Plicatiforma pseudoplicata (Friedberg, 1934), Ervilia podolica (Eichwald, 1830), Ervilia trigonula Sokolov, 1899, Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830), Macoma (Psammacoma) elliptica (Brocchi, 1814), Corbula (Varicorbula) cf. gibba (Olivi, 1792) i Cuspidaria rostrata (Spengler, 1793). W artykule podano zasięgi stratygraficzne znalezionych gatunków i opisy rzadkich bądź ważnych stratygraficznie gatunków. Wyznaczona na podstawie zespołów małżowych granica baden/ sarmat przebiega w utworach z głębokości 109,10–127,70 m w otworze wiertniczym Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 i 150,80–162,80 m w otworze wiertniczym Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1.
The study is based on the fossil material derived from cores drilled in 2010 in the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin. The deposits overlying the gypsum level, represented mainly by mudstones and clays of the Machów Fm., are less than 200 m thick in this part of the Carpathian Foredeep. In total, 56 samples were investigated: 32 samples from the Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 drilling core 200 m long; and 24 samples from the Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1 drilling core, 191 m long. Twelve bivalve species have been identified, namely: Nucula (Nucula) nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758), Lentipecten corneus denudatus (Reuss, 1867), Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791), Inaequicostata cf. politioanei (Jekelius, 1944), Obsoletiforma vindobonensis (Laskarew, 1903), Plicatiforma pseudoplicata (Friedberg, 1934), Ervilia podolica (Eichwald, 1830), Ervilia trigonula Sokolov, 1899, Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830), Macoma (Psammacoma) elliptica (Brocchi, 1814), Corbula (Varicorbula) cf. gibba (Olivi, 1792) and Cuspidaria rostrata (Spengler, 1793). Stratigraphic ranges of bivalve species as well as descriptions of rare or stratigraphically important species have been presented. The bivalves define the Badenian/ Sarmatian boundary within the depth range 109.10–127.70 m in the Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 borehole, and within the depth range 150.80–162.80 m in the Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1 borehole. Specifically, the scallop Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791) defines the base of the Machów Fm. as the Late Badenian, while the species Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830) enables to specify the age of the uppermost part of the Machów Fm. as the Early Sarmatian.
