Opis:
The moldavites are Miocene tektites foundin Central Europe. Their presence in the Badenian sediments are rare due to fluvial reworking in the area. In the clay sediments of the Poznań Formation, in the Dębina profile, one moldavite was found, which is the fourth tektite from these sediments from Poland. It had dimensions of 14 X 10 X 8 mm and a weight of 1.03 gram. The glass surface was richly ornamented, and indicates a quick deposition, without any long-distance fluvial abrasion. Currently, depending on the age ofthe sediments in which they occur, two substrewn fields of Ries-same-age and redeposited moldavites were characterized in SW Poland.

Lignite from the “‘Pątnów IV” deposit is mined in the Jóźwin IIB opencast by the Konin Lignite Mine. Within the exploited 1st Mid-Polish lignite seam, there are layers of sand with a thickness of over 5 m. Based on field observations and geological mapping, these sandy interbeddings are interpreted as deposits of two or three crevasse splays of different ages. Due to such a large thickness of sands, only the upper bench of the lignite seam is currently mined in the Jóźwin IIB opencast. On the other hand, the exploitation of the lower and middle lignite benches of this seam is unprofitable at present.

Opis:
This study focuses on discussing the relationship between the accumulation of peat and its compaction in the overbank zone of the Miocene river system. The examined 2nd Lusatian lignite seam is characteristically interbedded with sandy deposits and these are less compressible than peat. Therefore, in favourable conditions such as those found at Chłapowo Cliff (on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Poland), it is possible to identify the effects of an even or uneven lowering of the mire surface, resulting from diversified compaction of the underlying phytogenic beds. The research problem was applied to two examples located close to each other within the lignite seam. The first case shows the accumulation of fresh peat layers of almost equal thickness, while the second one presents a reduction in the thickness of fresh peat beds over the fossilised channel-fill sandy body. Only the latter example allows us to calculate the peat-to-lignite compaction ratio. The results of the compaction ratio obtained, Cr ≈ 7.37, mean that the youngest, fresh peat layers were compacted at least 7 times, transforming them into lignite beds. However, such a high compaction value, estimated for the top layers of the Miocene mire, cannot be directly taken into account when reconstructing the total thickness of the peat seam prior to covering it with mineral overburden. The published peat-to-lignite compaction ratios, determined using other research methods, for the 2nd Lusatian lignite seam or its stratigraphic equivalents range from 1.7 to 6.0 in most cases, with averages of 2.2 to 4.0. The differences between the data in the literature and the results given in this paper are due to the fact that the process of peat/lignite compaction is ongoing and cumulative.

Opis:
The First Middle-Polish lignite seam of Middle Miocene age is exploited in all opencast mines in the Konin-Turek area, central Poland. This lignite seam contains a large number of xylites, for which the compaction coefficient was calculated as equal to 1.2. On the other hand, it is known that the compaction coefficient for the whole 1st Middle-Polish lignite seam is approximately 2.0. It follows that the compaction coefficient of xylites is 60% of the compaction coefficient for the whole lignite seam. Therefore, the compaction coefficient for the 1st Middle-Polish lignite seam can be easily determined on the basis of the compaction coefficient of xylites. In contrast to other methods, compaction studies of xylites are characterised by easy measurements and simple calculations, and allow neglecting, e.g., post-sedimentary deformation of the lignite seam.

Opis:
The Magura Nappe is the largest and southernmost tectonic unit of the Western Outer Carpathians and differ in lithofacies development from the Middle and Marginal groups of units. The age studies of the youngest deposits of the Magura Nappe play an important role in understanding the tectogenesis of the Outer Carpathians. The aim of this work was to find the litho- and biostratigraphic correlation with the more external units. For this purpose the youngest deposits from selected sections of the Magura Nappe located east of the Skawa River, were chosen. For the lower limit of the youngest sediments, Middle/Upper Eocene variegated shales with Reticulophragmium amplectens Grzybowski were taken. The analysis of nannoplankton assemblages enable to establish the age of these deposits which varies from Middle Eocene (NP15) up to Upper Oligocene (NP25) and Lower Miocene (NN2). The Eocene/Oligocene boundary lies within the NP21 nanno-zone and was found in the Krynica Zone within the Globigerina Marls (Leluchów section), in the Rača Zone within Poprad Sandstone Mbr of the Magura Fm. and in the Siary Zone within supra-Magura (Budzów) Beds (Budzów section), Wątkowa Sandstone (Ropica and Małastów sections) and within Zembrzyce (sub-Magura) Beds (Folusz section). In the Rača and Krynica zones the youngest - Upper Oligocene deposits from the studied sections belong to the Malcov Fm., whereas in the Siary Zone they belong to the supra-Magura (Budzów) Beds. The age of the Malcov Fm. was determined as NP24 in Leluchów and as NP25 in the Nowy Sącz I borehole, whereas the Budzów Beds belong to zone NP24. The youngest deposits so far described from the Magura Nappe belong to the Zawada Fm. whose age was determined as NN2. In the Polish part of the Bystrica Zone deposits younger than NP18, have so far not been found. The analysis of autochtonous nannoplankton assemblages from the Magura Basin enable to follow the palaeoecological changes in the Magura Basin, both in regional and global sense, from Late Eocene through Oligocene. The global changes are the drop of the water temperature accompanied by the progressing eutrophication of the Magura Basin. Further events were also recorded in zone NP23. The assemblage of this zone was characterised by the presence of species which are believed to be indicative of brackish water and restricted to the Paratethys region.

Opis:
Analysis of previously available stratigraphic data coupled with the re-interpretation of seismic profiles calibrated by boreholes has allowed the construction of a new tectonic model of evolution of the Gdów “embayment” – a tectonic re-entrant located along the Carpathian front east of Kraków (southern Poland). This model shows that the main phase of localized fault-controlled subsidence took place in the Early Badenian and was associated with deposition of the locally overthickened Skawina Formation. Also, deposition of evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation seems to have been tectonically controlled by local basement faulting. Supra-evaporitic siliciclastic deposits have developed as a result of overall north-directed sediment progradation from the eroded Carpathian belt towards the Carpathian Foredeep. During the final stages of development of the Carpathian fold-and-thrust wedge the previously subsiding Gdów “embayment” area was uplifted and basement faults were reactivated either as reverse faults or as low angle thrust faults. Along the leading edge of this inverted structure a triangle zone developed, with backthrusting along the evaporitic level. As a result, overthickened evaporites, formed in local tectonically-controlled depressions within the area of the Gdów “embayment” area have been strongly folded and internally deformed.

Opis:
Sarmatian thin-bedded sandstone and shales have been a subject of statistical studies to differentiate between good and poor reservoir rocks and to show gas-saturated layers in comparison to water-saturated strata. Statistical studies including fractal analysis were performed on well logging data from the Sędziszów 34 borehole drilled in a belt of hydrocarbon deposits that continue below the northern edge of the Carpathian–Stebnik overthrust. Lithological variability and porosity differentiation and changes in water saturation were traced on the basis of the results of well logging interpretation. Basic statistics and histograms of petrophysical parameters have been analysed. A generalized second order fractal correlation dimension was calculated for all parameters and analysed as for a time series. Fractal dimensions did not correlated with the parameters, but good positive correlations between them and the parameters were observed and showed that the curves analysed had the same type of complexity. High correlation coefficients showed pairs of fractal dimensions for those parameters which had similar variability and the same curve roughness. The fractal correlation dimension described the type of complexity of the parameter (curve roughness) and indicated, for example, how shaliness influenced the reservoir properties of the local Middle Miocene. Therefore, the results were also useful in practice, which gave extra information on thin-bedded reservoir rocks.

The biostratigraphic investigation included the Menilite–Krosno Series of the Skole Unit overlying the Globigerina Marls. Seven calcareous nannoplankton zones (sensu Martini, 1971) were distinguished in these sediments: NP23, NP24, NP25, NN1, NN2, NN3? and NN4. Based on the species diversity of the assemblage, their abundances and preservation, as well as palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic conditions that controlled the basin during deposition of the Menilite and Krosno Beds have been identified. The Skole region was located at the periphery of the Paratethys basin during Late Oligocene–Early Miocene times. Based on the calcareous nannoplankton assemblage, the phase of isolation of the Paratethys (NP23) from the Mediterranean was documented. The restoration of normal marine conditions (NP24–NP25), sea-level fluctuations (sea-level fall?) at the Oligocene–Miocene boundary (uppermost part of the NP25–NN1), a phase of relative sea-level rise (NN2, NN3?, NN4) and the end of flysch sedimentation in the Skole Unit in the NN4 Calcareous Nannoplankton Zone were also identified.

Opis:
The early Badenian interval in the Central Paratethys realm is characterized by a major marine transgression into the Pannonian and Carpathian Foredeep basins. In the western part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep, Badenian sedimentation started generally with conglomerates (Dębowiec Formation) passing into a thick succession of claystones and mudstones with rare sandstone interbeds (Skawina Formation). Profiles containing a full sequence of lower Badenian strata are relatively rare, and are mainly known from boreholes. In this paper, we present new results on samples taken from such a borehole (Kaczyce K2/07) located near the town of Cieszyn. We focus on reconstructing the chronology of the lower Badenian marine sediments at the beginning of the transgression in the Carpathian Foredeep (lower Skawina Fm.) using radio-isotopic dating (40Ar/39Ar) of a volcanoclastic layer (tuff and tuffite) and biostratigraphy of calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera. The weighted mean 40Ar/39Ar age for sanidine separates from the tuff provided an age of 14.27 ± 0.03 Ma. This age is consistent with the NN5 and MNN5a nannofossil zones determined in this study. Our foraminiferal assemblages show that the basal beds of the Skawina Formation up to the tuffites correspond to the Orbulina suturalis–Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone (according to Cicha et al., 1975) and cover the interval of the Lower Lagenidae Zone–lowermost Upper Lagenidae Zone (Grill, 1941). The petrographic data from the tuffite allow correlation of the tuffite from the Kaczyce K2/07 borehole to the level of the Chełmek Tuffite Bed (Alexandrowicz, 1997) providing a regional correlation horizon for future studies.

The first Polish moldavites were discovered in 2012. This paper is a summary of the distribution and inventory of these Polish tektites. Up to the present, 28 moldavites have been described from seven different sandpits. These moldavites were deposited in the upper Miocene fluvial deposits of the Gozdnica Formation, as well as in the Pleistocene river terraces. Apart from a typical bottle green colour, moldavites also have other diagnostics features for this class of tektites, such as the presence of bubbles, inclusions oflechatelierite, as well as the same, homogeneous chemical composition. Fluvial redeposition was interpreted as the main process which determined moldavite distribution. Despite the most recent find of one moldavite specimen in Bielawy, all of these specimens indicate both Lusatian as well as sub-strewn Czech fields as their supply area.

Opis:
Study of foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and palynofacies occurring in 2 m-thick marls cropping out beneath a giant gypsum intergrowth unit in the Borków gypsum quarry in Southern Poland, one of the key Badenian evaporite sections in the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin, has shown the presence of 49 species of benthic foraminifers and 11 species of planktonic ones, and 51 dinoflagellate (including 8 redeposited ones). The composition of the foraminiferal fauna and its isotopic signal indicate temperature-stratified, nutrient-rich and thus less-oxygenated marine water. Changes in the relative abundance of epifaunal and infaunal species indicate a clear environmental change during the deposition of the marls. A middle to outer shelf marine, well-ventilated environment with moderate primary productivity existed during the deposition of the bottom part of the marls. Subsequently, infaunal bottom-dwellers became dominant due to a massive increase in food supply to the sea bottom and shallowing of the sea to inner - middle shelf depths, and than a decreasing trend of a relative abundance of the infaunal morphogroups is observed until the top of the marls that were deposited in an inner shelf environment with moderate primary productivity. The calculated palaeotemperatures for particular foraminifer taxa (Globigerina spp., Cibicidoides and Bulimina elongata) show a slight upsection decrease and a decrease in the temperature differences between the bottom and intermediate water beds. Palynofacies are composed of elements of mixed origin, including terrestrial, marine (mainly dinoflagellate cysts) and elements of uncertain derivation (structureless organic matter). The palynological content of most samples indicates their deposition in an open-marine marine environment, in the stable marine conditions of an open shelf basin with no salinity fluctuations. The sample just below the gypsum contains no dinoflagellate cysts, perhaps due to a drastic change in the photic zone leading to a complete collapse of the dinoflagellate flora. Very rare occurrence of planktonic foraminifers in that sample suggest the shallowing of the basin accompanied by a decrease in the temperature gradient between the upper (warmer) and lower (colder) water beds. A shallow, cold water marine environment is indicated for the topmost foraminiferal assemblage.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a study of crevasse splay deposits from the Miocene of central Poland near Konin. These mineral deposits occur within the 1st Middle-Polish lignite seam of Middle Miocene age, which is exploited from the Tomislawice lignite opencast mine. They consist of fine-grained sands with an admixture of plant detritus at the top and bottom layers, where the muddy-sandy clasts are present. The investigated crevasse splay deposits are predominantly massive or horizontally stratified, and they occasionally reveal small- to large-scale (planar, trough and ripple) cross-stratification. Thus, they are interpreted as representing dense gravity flows, sheet flows, and channelized flows of variable energy. The crevasse splay was formed subaerially during sudden flood conditions on the floodplain covered by a low-lying mire with predominant herbaceous vegetation. The description of the crevasse splay deposits from the Miocene of central Poland can be helpful in better understanding the sedimentation conditions of relatively thick lignite seams.

Opis:
In this article, the most recent moldavite discoveries in Poland and their host sediments are characterised and discussed. They were discovered at Lasów, located about 8 km north of Zgorzelec (Poland) and Görlitz (Germany), about 700 m from the Polish-German border, close to the Lusatian Neisse (Nysa) River. The tektites were collected from Vistulian (Wiechselian) glacial age sand and gravel of a closed quarry pit, associated with the river terraces. In the Lasów area, the moldavite-bearing sediments are Pleistocene in age and represent Lusatian Neisse terrace deposits. They were redeposited from the upper part of the drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse, probably washed out from the Miocene sediments that filled the Zittau Depression, the Berzdorf–Radomierzyce Depression, the Višňová Depression and the tectonically uplifted Izera Mts. and Działoszyn Depression. The erosion of Miocene deposit occured on a large scale in the uplifted foothills of the Upper Miocene Izera, Lusatia and Kaczawa complexes. The sediment cover was removed from the Działoszyn Depression. The drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse is the area where moldavites were formed by the Nördlinger Ries impact. The source area of moldavite is the same for the Miocene deposits around Gozdnica, as well as for the Pleistocene sediments at Lasów.
