The aim of this article is to analyse the legal status of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, an entity operating within the system of higher education and science. The study explores the Academy’s origins, its legal form and role it plays within the system of higher education and science, and its rights and obligations under the law. The findings presented in the paper allow for drawing conclusions on the legal status of the Academy, in particular recognising that it is a legal person functioning in the legal form of a (registered) association, and at the same time an organisation directly included by the legislator in the category of entities of the system of higher education and science. The study indicates the reasons justifying the Academy’s inclusion in the catalogue of entities of this system, primarily its exceptional achievements in the field of scientific activities and popularising their results, as well as the universality of undertaken activities, tradition and reputation within the scientific community.

Vladimir Kulchytsky (1852–1936), was one of the leading representatives of the scientific elite of the city of Lviv. He was a veterinarian, zoologist, an outstanding mammalian anatomist, professor, pro-rector and rector of the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lviv. He did his studies in natural sciences in Vienna, then in Lviv. He also received a diploma in veterinary medicine. From 1882 to 1934 he worked at the Lviv Academy of Veterinary Medicine, first as an assistant, then as a lecturer, and from 1906 as a professor, head of the Department (Department) of Descriptive Anatomy, Topography, Histology and Embryology (later, after changes, the Department of Comparative Anatomy). He also worked as a veterinarian at the Lviv Horse Tram Society, as a city veterinarian and as a veterinarian for the control of cattle and meat on the Lviv railroads. Prof. Kulchytsky’s scientific output includes about 60 publications (compact works, studies and scientific articles, discussions, reviews, etc.). The area of research and scientific interests of V. Kulchytsky was extremely wide and at the same time diverse. He became famous as an outstanding mammalian anatomist and zoologist, creator of anatomical preparations (continuing the work of Prof. Henryk Kadye). He conducted research work on avian anatomy and physiology, the anatomy and etiology of cattle and horse diseases. He was also involved in parasitology, hippiatry, conducted interdisciplinary studies on the borderline between ethnography and ethnology, was interested in climatology and demography of the countries of the Orient and Central Asia, Indian studies and deep-sea fauna of the oceans. He skillfully combined his collecting passion for carpentry (1906–1936) with orientalist research, becoming an undisputed authority in this field, while amassing the largest collection of old oriental textiles on Polish soil. In 1934, he received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lviv for his outstanding achievements in the field of science and his attitude during the occupation of Lviv by Russia (1914–1915).
Włodzimierz Kulczycki (1852–1936), należał do czołowych przedstawicieli elity naukowej miasta Lwowa. Był lekarzem weterynarii, zoologiem, wybitnym anatomem ssaków, profesorem, prorektorem i rektorem Akademii Medycyny Weterynaryjnej we Lwowie. Odbył studia zakresie nauk przyrodniczych w Wiedniu, następnie we Lwowie. Otrzymał również dyplom lekarza weterynarii. W latach 1882–1934 pracował w lwowskiej Akademii Medycyny Weterynaryjnej, najpierw jako asystent, następnie wykładowca, od 1906 r. jako profesor, kierownik Katedry (Zakładu) Anatomii Opisowej, Topograficznej, Histologii i Embriologii (następnie po zmianach Zakładem Anatomii Porównawczej). Pracował również na stanowisku lekarza weterynarii w Lwowskim Towarzystwie Tramwajów Konnych, jako miejski lekarz weterynarii i weterynarz kontroli bydła i mięsa na lwowskich kolejach. Dorobek naukowy prof. Kulczyckiego obejmuje około 60 publikacji (prac zwartych, studiów i artykułów naukowych, omówień, recenzji etc.). Obszar badań i zainteresowań naukowych W. Kulczyckiego był niezwykle szeroki, a zarazem różnorodny. Zasłynął jako wybitny anatom ssaków i zoolog, twórca preparatów anatomicznych (kontynuator prac prof. Henryka Kadyego). Prowadził prace badawcze nad anatomią i fizjologią ptaków, anatomią i etiologią chorób bydła i koni. Zajmował się również parazytologią, hipiatrią, prowadził interdyscyplinarne studia z pogranicza etnografii i etnologii, interesowała go klimatologia i demografia krajów Orientu i Azji Środkowej, indianistyka oraz fauna głębinowa oceanów. Kolekcjonerską pasję kobierniczą (1906–1936) umiejętnie łączył z badaniami orientalistycznymi, stając się niekwestionowanych autorytetem w tej dziedzinie, jednocześnie gromadząc największą na ziemiach polskich kolekcję starych tkanin orientalnych. W 1934 r. za wybitne osiągnięcia na polu nauki i postawę podczas okupacji Lwowa przez Rosję (1914–1915) otrzymał doktorat honoris causa Akademii Medycyny Weterynaryjnej we Lwowie.

Artykuł omawia działania profesora Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego Adama Vetulaniego na rzecz reaktywacji Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności w latach 1956–1958. Zakończyły się one niepowodzeniem na skutek nieprzychylności komunistycznych władz i prezydium Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Warszawie. Za swoją działalność Vetulani zapłacił nie tylko wieloletnimi zakazami wyjazdów zagranicznych (ze szkodą dla polskiej nauki) oraz tym, że nie został członkiem rzeczywistym PAN, ale także długotrwałą inwigilacją przez PRL-owskie służby bezpieczeństwa.
The article discusses Jagiellonian University Professor Adam Vetulani’s efforts to reactivate the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences between 1956 and 1958, which failed due to the hostility of the communist authorities and the praesidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. For his activities, Vetulani paid not only with a long-term ban on foreign travels (to the detriment of Polish sciences) and the fact that he did not become a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences but also with long-term surveillance by the communist security services.

Through this article, the current director of the PolSCA Office in Brussels (Dr. Tomasz Poprawka) and former director of the PAS Scientific Center in Paris (Dr. Kamil Szafrański) share their reflections and thus contribute to the dis- cussion on the functioning and role of foreign centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In response to the article co-authored by the former directors of the PAS stations in Vienna, Paris and Brussels – in which they initiated the debate – the authors present their own perspective on a vision of the balanced operation of the stations in three key areas: the action plan, administrative support and communication. Having in mind an effective operation of the PAS centers abroad, the authors wish to share their ideas, based on the experience to date. These include strengthening of the stations in the future, taking up new challenges and searching for innovative solutions for their continuous development, thus meaningfully contributing to the promotion of Polish science abroad. At the same time, the authors declare their willingness to take part in further discussions on the role and operationality of the Academy’s scientific centers abroad. This pub- lication consists of the following elements: introduction, discussion of issues related to science diplomacy, lobbying and advocacy of interests, analysis of administrative issues, an outline of aspects of internal communication and ex- ternal dissemination, and a summary.

The Poznań Branch of the PAN Archive in Warsaw was established in May 1956. From April 1974, the headquarters of the Branch was located in the building of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences in Poznań. The Archive collects, pro- cesses and makes available archival materials on the activities of the Polish Aca- demy of Sciences and legacies of scholars. The legacies that form the backbone of archival resources are gathered through purchases, donations and deposits. Then they are compiled in the form of inventories and made available for re- search purposes. The collections of the Archive of the Polish Academy of Scien- ces in Poznań contain rich documentation of the history of science in Poznań and in Poland. They concern both scientific institutions, including laboratories, edi- torial offices and some institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Univer- sity of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań and other Poznań universities, as well as bio- graphies of individual scientists, especially those connected to Poznań and Great- er Poland. Archival collections with valuable materials related to groundbreaking events in the post-war history of Poznań and Poland are also interesting. Archival collections are also displayed at exhibitions and during scientific conferences. Archives from two legacies are available on the CYRYL portal – the Poznań Local Digital Repository.

The Position Statement on the principles of nutrition for children aged 1-3 years emphasizes that proper nutrition of children at this age determines their optimal psychometric development and has beneficial effects on the process nutritional programming, which reduces the risk of diet-related diseases in adulthood. Continued breastfeeding in the post-infancy period, together with the proper introduction of complementary foods, supplies all the nutritional needs of the child. A varied selection of food products is important to balance out the diet of a child in the context of energy and nutrient needs. Attention should be paid to products not recommended for frequent consumption, due to the possibility of the early development of improper eating habits that can lead to undesirable health consequences. Due to the potential risk of deficiency, adequate intake of iron, iodine, calcium and vitamin D, as well as of n-3 PUFAs (which is often insufficient) should be provided. Adequate dietary energy and protein intake protects children against protein–energy undernutrition and is crucial for their proper growth and development. An important element in the assessment of the development of children involves monitoring their nutritional status and physical development by systematically measuring their body weight and length/height and analyzing their weight gain. It is necessary to diagnose the causes of being underweight/ overweight in children. Physical activity (such as outdoor walks, plays, and games) and healthy sleep hygiene are recommended. Physical activity, an adequate number of hours of sleep, and the quality of sleep in early childhood may improve immunity, reduce the risk of excessive weight gain, and consequently reduce the risk of obesity later in life. Other issues discussed include the functioning of the digestive system as one of the determinants of the nutrition of young children, basics of proper nutrition, risk of nutrient deficiencies and development of proper eating habits in early childhood.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, care for an adequate diet, well adapted to the body's needs and the current level of physical activity, becomes of particular importance. Many dietary compounds participate in the functioning of the immune system, while vitamins D, C, A (including beta-carotene), E, B6, B12, folic acid, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, amino acids, n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and intestinal microbiota are crucial in various types of defence processes. There has been no evidence that consumed food and its compounds, including those with pro-/prebiotic properties, play a significant role in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection or alleviating its course. However, in terms of the nutritional value of food and the prevention of dysbiosis, recommending a varied diet with a high proportion of plant-based foods and an adequate amount of animal-based foods has a sound scientific basis. Malnutrition, underweight and obesity are considered independent and prognostic risk factors of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, which reduce a patient's chances of survival. Therefore, ensuring good nutritional status, including healthy body weight, is a reasonable approach in the prevention of viral infection SARS-CoV-2 or alleviating its course. The document is accompanied by two catalogues of practical nutritional recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic, addressed to the general population and children.

The article is intended to be an appendix to an earlier discussion on the activi- ties of the foreign scientific centres of the Polish Academy of Sciences (“Nauka” 4/2020 and 2/2021). It presents another case study, namely the centre situated in Rome – one of the eldest Polish centres abroad – its historical background and heritage as well as its recent activities. It points out also some actual present problems and challenges in order to stimulate a broader debate on how the PAS foreign centres could be better used to promote and disseminate the achieve- ments of Polish researchers.

Opracowanie ma charakter autobiograficzny i stanowi fragment pracy, która opublikowana zostanie w 2022 r. w serii Fontes rerum ad historiam scientiae spectantium Instytutu Historii Nauki Polskiej Akademii Nauk.
The aim of the article is to present more important issues related to the course of activities in the field of science of Professor Janusz Lipkowski, physicochemist, real member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, president of the Warsaw Scientific Society 2007–2020, and vice-president of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the years 2003–2006. The study is autobiographical in nature and is part of a work that will be published in 2022 in the series Fontes rerum ad historiam scientiae spectantium of the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Stosowanie suplementów diety (suplementacja) to indywidualne uzupełnianie diety w składniki naturalnie występujące w żywności. Z założenia suplementy diety powinny być przyjmowane okresowo. W praktyce żywieniowej istnieje wiele wskazań do suplementacji, ale decyzja o przyjmowaniu suplementów diety powinna być podejmowana przez konsumentów z rozsądkiem i tylko w uzasadnionych sytuacjach, gdy istnieje ryzyko, że zwyczajowa dieta nie dostarcza witamin i składników mineralnych w ilości odpowiedniej do pokrycia zapotrzebowania organizmu. Należy jednak pamiętać o realnym niebezpieczeństwie wynikającym z przyjmowania zbyt dużych dawek witamin i składników mineralnych. U wielu osób stosujących suplementy diety, zwłaszcza kilka rodzajów jednocześnie, mogą wystąpić niepożądane skutki uboczne i pogorszenie stanu zdrowia, a u osób przyjmujących leki – może dodatkowo dojść do poważnego zakłócenia lub osłabienia działania leku, a nawet braku efektu leczniczego. W dokumencie przedstawiono 10 kroków i zasad korzystania z dostępnych na rynku suplementów diety, które skierowano do populacji generalnej.

Opis:
The State Zoological Museum, established in 1928, inherited and developed the legacy of the Zoological Cabinet of the University of Warsaw (existing since 1818). The Cabinet’s collection had been gathered for decades and belonged to eminent personages not only in Poland but also in Europe. The Museum and its collections were threatened many times: first by a great fire in 1935, then by the German attack on Warsaw in 1939 and subsequent occupation, as well as by the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising and the destruction of the city. After the post-war reconstruction of the Museum, it was time to function in a new political reality, in which the most significant change for this institution was the establishment of the Polish Academy of Sciences. A planned inclusion of the State Zoological Museum in the structures of the newly-founded Polish Academy of Sciences meant that the scientists had to face a dilemma: in exchange for research funds and career development opportunities, they were expected to show favour to the communists and readiness to implement the idea of socialism. In the background of this process, numerous scientific conferences took place, where controversial visions of the future of biological sciences clashed. This process resulted in the transformation of the State Zoological Museum into the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
