Opis:
In industrialized countries cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death. The last clinical therapy option for some patients, suffering from terminal heart diseases, is donor heart transplantation. As the available number of donor organs is decreasing, many patients die while waiting for a transplant. For this reason Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs), which can mechanically support the human heart to achieve a sufficient perfusion of the body, are under development. For an implantable VAD, design constraints have to be deduced from the physiological conditions in the human body. In case of a VAD drive, these constraints are for example dimensions, electric losses, which might result in an overheating of blood, and a long durability. Therefore a hybrid permanent magnet hydrodynamic bearing is designed in this paper, which works passively and contactless. Based on Finite Element simulations of magnetic fields, various permanent magnet topologies are studied in terms of axial forces and stiffness.

Opis:
Total Artificial Hearts (TAHs) are required for the therapy of terminal heart diseases as heart transplants are only a limited option due to the available number of donor hearts. For implantation TAHs have to meet constraints regarding its dimensions, weight, perfusions and electrical losses. An innovative linear driven TAH is presented, which meets all constraints except weight. Therefore the geometry of the linear drive is optimised to reduce its weights while simultaneously limiting the electrical losses as much as possible. In order to calculate the losses, this paper introduced a combined calculation chain consisting of FEM simulations and analytical equations. Based on this chain the linear drive is optmised by the method of parameter variations. The results yield a hierachic order of parameters which are most suitable for the weight reduction of the drive for low losses. By this the weight of the linear drive is reduced by 25%. As the allowable loss limit is not exceeded yet, room for further weight reduction achieved by an optimisation of the axial geomtry parameters is given.

Opis:
The current state of understanding the North Sea’s physical system is presented. First, basic phenomena like astronomical tides and general circulation will be described and analysed with respect to their physical nature and respective interactions. There will be special focus on fundamental dynamic balances. Next, some specific topics relevant to the marine ecosystem, the economy and society will be considered: among them, spreading and transport processes, the fresh water budget, the heat budget and storm surges. A separate section is dedicated to the North Sea of Tomorrow, i.e. the prospective variations of the physical environment resulting from global changes in future decades. The statements are based on the long experience of the authors and their groups and include findings that are little known if at all. The review finishes with a list of open questions and the corresponding research demands.

Opis:
Gantry stages, which consist of two parallel acting servo drives, are commonly used in machine tools. One drawback of this concept is the crosstalk between both drives, when a stiff mechanical coupling is present. This can lead to a limited bandwidth of the position control or to high reaction forces. One way to overcome these issues is the usage of joints to create an additional degree of freedom, which allows the drives to move independently. The design of these joints as compliant elements offers advantages compared to common rolling bearings, such as low friction and the absence of backlash. Another benefit is the variability in the design of the compliant joints allowing for adjustments to the position of each joint’s centre of compliance. Thus, the position of the resulting pivot, and the transfer matrix between the motion of the drives and the motion at the gantry stage’s tool centre point, change as well. This paper addresses the placement of the joint’s centre of compliance in order to improve motion accuracy. For this purpose, joints with modular arranged compliant links have been designed. The characteristics of the joints and their effect on the behaviour of the gantry stage are compared using analytical investigations as well as experimental results.

Opis:
Gantry stages, which consist of two parallel acting servo drives, are commonly used in machine tools. One drawback of this concept is the crosstalk between both drives due to the structural coupling that can cause stability issues and therefore limits the bandwidth of the position control. This paper deals with the development of compliant joints to solve the coupling between the drives. When compared to solutions containing bearings, the advantages of such flexible elements are low friction and the absence of backlash. To adjust the properties of the joints, packages of spring-steel-sheets are used as compliant links. One design aspect of the flexible joints is a low stiffness relating to the rotation around one specific axis, but a high stiffness relating to the other degrees of freedom. With this method, the dynamic behaviour of the gantry stage is modified and the bandwidth of the controllers can be increased. Additionally, by releasing the mechanical coupling of the drives, the reaction forces the actuators have to provide can be reduced. Both systems with flexible and with rigid connecting elements, are analysed by measured frequency response functions.
