This article tries to show that research on Romanticism should focus not only on “high” literature. The subject of discussion is funeral speeches published in Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) in the Romantic time period. Not only did they use to be one of the forms of re-cording memory of the dead ones, but also prepared the reader to “meet” Romantic literature (by means of quotations, cryptoquotes, telling about A. Mickiewicz and Z. Krasinski’s life and career; introducing them into social awareness). They also proved vitality of Romantic topos (prophet, suffering motherland, poet). The paper presents closer the horizons of the reader’s expectations, as well as traces the pervasion of legends and Romantic myths into the way the biographies of heroes of funeral ceremonies are presented. One can see experiencing the history and nation, which leads to exploration of community identity, reception of reality as if “filtered” by sacred standards and the presence of cultural universe – a fusion of religion and patriotism common to all Pol-ish people.

This article discusses the way in which the Chopin Year of 1910 was celebrated in Wielkopolska. It presents a script prepared in the nineteenth century and shows similarities with celebrations of Mickiewicz and other Polish heroes and artists. Invariably used in such commemorations was a “symbolic capital” that made it easier to create an intergenerational code, thereby disseminating knowledge of national culture and history. A significant role was played in 1910 by a centenary panel, which produced “Guidelines for popular Chopin celebrations” and also many occasional, popular materials. Chopin’s induction into the national pantheon involved the use of audio material (vocal and instrumental concerts), verbal material (articles, poems, lectures and brochures) and also a visual code (anniversary window stickers, tableaux vivants or tableaux illuminés). Illuminated pictures - recommended by a catalogue of slides produced in Poznań - stimulated the imagination of the masses and served as a guide through the composer’s life and work, and their impact was enhanced by a commentary. Most of the living pictures were probably inspired by Henryk Siemiradzki’s canvas Chopin grający na fortepianie w salonie księcia Radziwiłła [Chopin playing the piano in Prince Radziwill’s salon] and Józef Męcina Krzesz’s painting Ostatnie akordy Chopina [Chopin’s last chords]. This combination of codes made it possible to create a model adapted to the times and to the expectations of a mass audience. The Chopin anniversary, in which admiration was inseparably intertwined with manipulation, was a pretext for strengthening the national identity.

Franciszek Xawery Fierich (1860–1928) was one of the most highly qualified Polish lawyers of the period  of  twenty  years  of  independence  after  the  World  War  I.  He  was  the  Professor  at  the Jagiellonian University, the civil procedure specialist, the President of the Codification Commission. His legal opinions influenced the form of code of civil procedure of 1930. Franciszek Xawery Fierich was the reporter of the Civil Procedure Section in the Codification Commission, who worked out (among other things) the part of code of civil procedure concerning proceedings before the Supreme Court. He was the supporter of the cassation system.

The article discusses the opera-ballad Powrót taty (Father’s return) in a musical edition by Henryk Jarecki with a libretto by Jan Gołębiowski. Its goal is to present the manners of building the character and the narrative. Apart from the characteristic features of a ballad, the text also discusses the category of an oral poet, a “storyteller” and the dialogue relation (“speaking” instead of “talking”.) These are the means that gave Mickiewicz’s ballad a new dimension. Helpful in its reception are texts on cultural practices, especially those referring to oral culture (compare with e.g. Jack Goody, Albert B. Lord, Eric A. Havelock, Walter J. Ong.).

The article is an attempt at analysing ‘Falcon’ hymns dated to the period before 1918. Some research difficulties (lack of research papers, chronological expansiveness, or mass culture affiliation) have been pointed out. Not only the role of a song-book is highlighted (in its numerous editions), but also other forms of those publications (i.e. in the Gymnastic Hand- book ”Falcon”), as well as the activity of impressive music societies in that period. Questions are asked about: the role and aim of those hymns; connections with the ideology of the Gymnastic Society ‘Falcon’; connections with national hymns, or the type of affiliation. The author mentions numerous examples of hyms, which have been present in Polish music tradition ever since.

The aim of this article is to present the results of the archaeological analysis carried out on two wells from the site Kwiatków 11/20 (Brudzew commune, Greater-Poland Voivodeship) against a background of the geochemical and lithological data, as well as to outline the lithological and geological conditions of the surroundings of the excavated area. Within this settlement more than 100 wells were recorded. Most of the wells discovered have features of the Przeworsk culture from the first centuries AD. The analysis and interpretation of the data obtained (thanks to interdisciplinary research) helps us to understand the validity of use and functions of the wells within the site mentioned, and their social aspects. Thanks to the cooperation of specialists representing various scientific fields, it was possible to identify some differences not only in the chronology of both fields analyzed, but also in their function within the area of the settlement.
Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników analizy archeologicznej przeprowadzonej dla dwóch studni ze stanowiska Kwiatków 11/20 (gmina Brudzew, województwo wielkopolskie) na tle danych geochemicznych i litologicznych, a także zarysowanie warunków litologicznych i geologicznych w otoczeniu przebadanego obszaru. W obrębie prezentowanej osady zarejestrowano ponad 100 studni, z których większość łączona jest z osadnictwem kultury przeworskiej z pierwszych wieków naszej ery. Analiza i interpretacja uzyskanych danych (dzięki interdyscyplinarnym badaniom) pomaga zrozumieć zasadność kopania studni, ich funkcje oraz ich kontekst społeczny. Dzięki współpracy specjalistów reprezentujących różne dziedziny udało się uchwycić pewne różnice nie tylko w chronologii obu analizowanych obiektów, ale także w ich funkcji w przestrzeni osadniczej.

One of the most interesting artifacts obtained from a multicultural site at Beszyn was a small zoomorphic gurine. It is highly probable, that this artifact could be connected with the Lusatian culture. The gurine, despite being in a good state of preservation, has few anatomical details, which would allow for the identication of the species of animal. It seems that the artifact under consideration is a schematic representation of a cow or a bull, but may not have been connected with the sphere of beliefs of its producers. To determine the material of which the artifact was made it was subjected to specialized metallographic analyzes. The obtained results turned out to be very interesting. In the available metallographic database, as well as in the literature it was unsucessful to nd an object of similar chemical composition. The analyzes showed that the artifact was made of tin and lead bronze. The copper alloy used seems to be unprecedented because of its iron, silver, and manganese contents, which occur in the case of iron alloys, not copper ones. These are supplements that raised corrosion resistance of the alloy. It should be emphasized that in modern and medieval alloys no analogical chemical composition was found, which together with the forms of corrosion sediments indicates its early origin – a long period of the artifact’s deposition in soil.

A significant increase in the amount of materials obtained from the recent large area excavations resulted in numerous finds of wells. For years, these unique archaeological features were not treated as a separate research problem. In order to obtain the fullest research results, an increasing interdisciplinarity involving different fields of science is applied to the studies on wells nowadays. Constructions made of organic raw materials are extremely rare in the space of a typical archaeological site and they are also extremely important sources for gaining knowledge about particular settlements. Wells are accompanied by a certain range of features related to the use of water intake and located in its immediate vicinity. These discoveries allow for extremely interesting interpretations of the functional connections between individual complexes of this type. Functions of wells are an issue that is inextricably linked to the location of such complexes in the settlement’s space. Another aspect related to studies of these features is their extremely rich symbolism. Wells are special archaeological features. Their uniqueness places them among the most interesting objects studied by archaeologists.

A multicultural site of Smólsk 1, Włocławek commune was subjected to a rescue archaeological excavation prior to the construction of the A1 motorway. Archaeological investigations were conducted by a team from the Foundation of the University of Lodz. An area of 2,37 ha has been excavated, and 618 features were recorded. In the area of segment C relics of a cloche grave cemetery were discovered, on which 11 graves were registered, clearly concentrated in the south. All the burials are individual graves without structures or kerbstones. Among them there were 9 cloche graves, 1 pit grave, and 1 urn grave. An observed element of the funeral ritual is covering the urn and cloche with the remains of the stake. Grave goods included fragments of urns and cloches, a swan-neck pin and occasional burnt fragments of preserved bronze and glass decorations. The pottery represented typical forms characteristic of cemeteries of the Cloche Graves culture. On the grounds of an anthropological analysis it has been determined that the dead were young individuals. Three female burials and 2 male ones were identied, in the other cases the sex was undetermined. Settlement nds were recorded on the entire site. A clear concentration of the pits was registered about 100 m to the west from the above described cemetery. These features did not disturb the cemetery space, and were located on its circuit, sometimes at a considerable distance. 63 features have been identied, including post-holes, pits and the remains of a building. On the grounds of the artifacts obtained both from the cemetery and from the settlement objects, the period of use of the complex corresponds to HaD and the older pre-Roman period.

The artefacts described in the paper come from the Przeworsk culture settlement in Kwiatków, where more than 100 fibulae were discovered. Among the artefacts acquired were three knee-shaped brooches with a semi-circular shield on the head. One of them was discovered in a well; the other two came from the surface of the site. This paper is mostly concerned with issues related to the technological aspects of the production of these items. In addition to the analysis of traces of craftsmanship found on the fibulae, XRF tests were performed to determine the material from which they were made. This approach allows one to supplement the typological findings and reconstruct the process of creating a given object. The brooches were microscopically examined for traces of craftsmanship. The attempt to determine the foundry method which had been applied failed to produce the expected results. Usually, individual instances of knee-shaped fibulae have been recorded at sites in Poland and other countries, such as the Czech Republic. In Kwiatków, however, the discovery contained as many as three such artefacts, though they had not been made in a workshop of one craftsman, although two display a high level of similarity.

Site 15 in Mąkolice, Głowno commune, is located in central Poland, on the Łowicz-Błonie Plain. The majority of obtained archaeological sources are related to the settlement of the population of the Przeworsk culture. The most interesting features include relics of structures of two post buildings – a long house and an accompanying building, discovered in the southern part of the settlement. The most important stage of the settlement can be linked to the C2 – D1 phase.

The article offers a new perspective on the role of the Sok.ł Gymnastic Society in the circles of Polish immigrants in Germany at the turn of the 20th century, presenting examples of Sok.ł’s activity in numerous places (including Berlin, Leipzig, Bochum) and the variety of forms of presentation used (poetry – song – drama; cultural performances). The theoretical considerations are preceded by a brief discussion of the history of the movement, with particular emphasis on the specificity of Sok.ł’s activities in the areas under Prussian rule. The use of new methodologies and studies of cultural memory and the categories of myth made it possible to reconstruct the social and cultural framework of memory. The analysis may be an incentive to revise the common views, allowing one to ask questions about the place and the role of collective memory, about the media of memory or the meaning of the phonic space.

Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia Kwestionariusz Roszczeniowości (KR). Mierzy on postawy roszczeniowe, rozumiane jako gotowość do wysuwania żądań i koncentrowanie się na obronie własnych praw. W skład kwestionariusza wchodzą, trzy skale: skala walki o swoje - mierza,ca skłonność do walki o swoje prawa, skala wiary w obligacje - mierza,ca przekonanie, że świat to sieć wzajemnych obligacji między jednostkami i instytucjami, oraz skalę mściwości - mierzącą, trudność w darowywaniu krzywd. Badania (N = 767) wskazują, że metoda cechuje się wysoką spójnością i zadowalającą stabilnością. Roszczeniowość właściwa korelowała dodatnio z samooceną, zadowoleniem z życia, indywidualizmem, narcyzmem i wewnętrznym umiejscowieniem kontroli. Wiara w obligacje korelowała dodatnio z kolektywizmem i zewnętrznym umiejscowieniem kontroli, a ujemnie z samooceną i zadowoleniem z życia. Mściwość korelowała dodatnio z narcyzmem; nie korelowała ani z samooceną, ani z zadowoleniem z życia.
This article presents the development of the Entitlement Questionnaire (EQ), designed to measure entitlement attitudes, understood as proneness to raising claims and to concentrating on defending one’s own rights. The Questionnaire consists of three scales: Fighting Rights – measuring proneness to fighting for one’s own rights, Belief in Obligations – measuring a conviction that the world is a net of mutual obligations between individuals and institutions, and Vindictiveness – measuring difficulties with forgiving wrongs. The study (N = 767) indicated that this method is characterized by high consistency and satisfactory stability. The pure entitlement attitude correlated positively with self-esteem, life satisfaction, individualism, narcissism and internal locus of control. Belief in obligations correlated positively with collectivism and external locus of control, and negatively with self-esteem and life satisfaction. Vindictiveness correlated positively with narcissism, however, it did not correlated neither with self-esteem nor with life satisfaction.

In this study, a novel questionnaire assessing human attitudes to death is introduced. Invented questionnaire comprises two scales: death anxiety and death fascination. Death anxiety refers to general fear of death, especially related to oneself. Death fascination contains not only purely cognitive interest in death and dying, but also acceptance of committing suicide and declared death desire. Validation was performed on 725 subjects – mostly citizens of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, in majority undergraduate and secondary school students of both sexes. This included testing internal consistency, temporal stability, and external validity. Final version of Death Anxiety and Fascination Scale contains 23 items. „Anxiety” scale consists of 9 items, „Fascination” – 14. Reliability of „Anxiety” scale equals 0,80, and of „Fascination” 0,90 (Cronbach’s alpha). The results show high validity and temporal stability of presented method.

The aim of presented studies (N = 495) was to detect temperamental and personal predictors of entitlement attitudes: active, passive and revengefulness among adult persons. Authors assumed that only in the case of revengefulness the significant and important temperamental and personal predictors exist. There were used EAS and NEO -FFI methods. Entitlement (active attitude) was related to higher Activity and lower Agreeableness, demandingness (passive attitude) was related to higher Neuroticism, revengefulness was related to higher Anger, lower Agreeableness and lower Openness to Experience.

In this article the pottery obtained from three wells from the settlement in Kwiatków was analyzed. Compared to other sites associated with the Przeworsk culture, this site deserves a special attention due to the presence of over a hundred of artificial water intakes within excavated area. The method of the vessels production, macro and micromorphology characteristics, the degree of their preservation and the level of deposition inside the features were examined in detail. Most of the pottery fragments should be associated with the Przeworsk culture from the Roman Iron Age, however there was also a small percentage of pottery with Jastorf culture elements. The information obtained allowed to define the context of their discovery and to explain its presence inside the well.

Artykuł przedstawia proces konstrukcji Skali Transcendencji Duchowej (STD), opartej na koncepcji Ralpha Piedmonta. Przez transcendencję duchową autorzy rozumieją zdolność do wyjścia poza bezpośrednie poczucie czasu i miejsca oraz widzenia życia z większej, bardziej obiektywnej perspektywy. Narzędzie składa się z dwóch podskal: Transcendencji Właściwej i Otwartości Duchowej. STD charakteryzuje się dobrymi właściwościami psychometrycznymi oraz wysoką trafnością. W badaniach walidacyjnych (N = 1859) testowano związki STD (wyniku ogólnego i skal składowych) z potrzebą aprobaty społecznej, istniejącymi miarami duchowości i religijności, materializmu oraz NEO-FFI. Narzędzie może być przydatne w badaniach eksperymentalnych i teoretycznych nad transcendencją duchową. Przeznaczone jest do badania osób po 16 roku życia.

This paper presents the construction of the Scale of Spiritual Transcendence (STD), which is based on Ralph Piedmont’s conception of spiritual transcendence. Piedmont defined it as the ability to transcend a direct sense of time and place and to perceive life from a broader, more objective perspective. The obtained measure is characterized by good psychometric parameters. In the validation process (N = 1859), the relations of the Scale of Spiritual Transcendence (the global result and two main subscales) with existing measures of social approval, religiosity and spirituality, materialism, and personality traits were tested. The presented scale could be implemented in experimental and correlational studies in this field. It is designed for studies on populations above the age of 16.

In presented research the impact of a politician’s economic status on his/her assessment and electoral chances was tested. In study 1 (N= 90) a politician with a high status was as-sessed as less moral and more competent than a low-status politician. In study 2 (N = 120) participants from Ireland and Poland were compared. Irish participants assessed a low--status politician as more moral and competent than the high-status one, whereas Polish participants assessed a high-status politician as more competent than the low-status one. Polish subjects generally assessed politicians’ morality lower than the Irish. The results sug-gest higher legitimization of wealth among Polish participants than the Irish, contrary to predictions. These results are discussed in reference to the system justification theory (Jost, Banaji, & Nosek, 2004) and legitimating myths (Jost, & Kay, 2003)

Dynamism of evolution – persistence of the humanities This text is devoted to the Anna Burzyńska’s book Deconstruction, politics and performatics, showing the philosophical transformation in the humanities in the second half of the twentieth century. Burzyńska has chosen specific way to describe these aspects of the field, although considerations apply to the mainly popular theory on the basis of literature, highlight extraordinary dynamism of this branch of knowledge and incredible speed of researchers’s responses to any signs of stagnation. She considerated the source of these transformations in Derrida’s deconstructive vision – of what I partly agree in this review, but also I have to notice signs of manipulation. Researcher shows, however, perhaps the most important aspect of the humanities, its extremely intense relationship with almost all areas of human existence, a great sensitivity of all philosophers facing contemporary challenges and the role of literary studies, in which it comes (come) to incorporate.

The author examines creative principles of writings on literary history by Czesław Miłosz. Historia literatury polskiej is a bridge between traditional thinking about history of literature and redefining this issue. His proposition mirrors the creator’s loose thinking about central and secondary issues and becomes in a way a post-modern textbook for foreigners. Miłosz’s method, also utilized in his books Mój wiek XX and Wyprawa w Dwudziestolecie is based on specific, individual solutions; however, in order to see them, one must analyze the writer’s historical and creative method – suspending the discourse between literacy and orality. The history of literature described by Miłosz is clearly not a finite, complete synthesis, but rather – as H.R. Jauss put it – a provocation towards further research.
L’auteure examine la démarche créatrice de Czesław Miłosz dans sa rédaction de l’histoire de la littérature. L’histoire de la littérature polonaise demeure un lien entre une approche traditionnelle de l’histoire littéraire et la redéfinition de cette question littéraire. La démarche de Miłosz démontre une approche assez aisée de l’écrivain à propos des notions prépondérantes et subalternes, et elle devient, en quelque sorte, un manuel postmoderne pour les étrangers. La méthode de Miłosz est également appliquée dans ses livres, Mój wiek XX [Mon siècle] et Wyprawa w Dwudziestolecie [Voyage dans l’entre-deux-guerres] et elle s’appuie sur des stratégies individuelles et spéciales. Pour qu’on puisse les voir, il faut avant tout analyser la méthode historico-créatrice qui consiste en une suspension du discours entre l’écriture et l’oralité. L’histoire de la littérature décrite par Miłosz n’est pas une synthèse explicitement terminée ou complète, mais plutôt, comme le remarque H.R. Jauss, une incitation à d’autres recherches.
