    W artykule podjęta została próba rekonstrukcji teorii uczenia się egzystencjalnego autorstwa Petera Jarvisa. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawione zostały ogólne uwagi na temat potrzeby teoretyzacji pola badawczego andragogiki, a także informacje na temat wykorzystanej metodologii badań. W drugiej części zaprezentowane zostały dwa ujęcia teorii uczenia się egzystencjalnego wraz z podsumowaniem.
    The article attempts to reconstruct the theory of existential learning by Peter Jarvis. The first part of the paper presents the general information on the need to theorise the research field of andragogy as well as on the applied research methodology. The second part presents two approaches to the theory of existential learning and the conclusions.

    W artykule odwołano się do koncepcji uczenia się dorosłych Petera Jarvisa, który lokuje je w kontekście społecznym. Autorka analizuje rozumienie pojęcia i procesu uczenia się według P. Jarvisa, który stale powraca do tego obszaru badań, modyfikując swoje podejście. W tekście został przedstawiony model procesu uczenia się, który został stworzony na bazie krytyki cyklu uczenia się Davida Kolba oraz zweryfikowany w badaniach z grupami uczących się dorosłych. W końcowej części artykułu autorka koncentruje się na inspiracjach i kontrowersjach tej koncepcji.
    The article refers to adult learning concept of Peter Jarvis who locates it in the social context. The author analyses understanding of the term and the learning process according to P. Jarvis who continuously returns to this research area and modifies his approach. The text presents learning process model created on the basis of David Kolb learning cycle criticism, verified via research on groups of adults undertaking educational activities. In the final part of the article the author concentrates on inspirations and controversies of this concept.

    In this brief introduction I do not expect to produce anything particularly new since transformative learning is being thoroughly investigated and a multitude of papers and books have already been written about it. At the same time, in my own investigations into learning I have differed slightly from Mezirow over the years and in this paper I want to highlight some of the differences and refer especially to crisis situations.

    Society’s structures are largely determined by the powerful forces operating at its centre, a place which education has never occupied. But education’s content and functions have always responded to the demands of the centre. However, there has been one notable exception to this in the history of education; adult education has, until very recently, sought to respond to the needs of the people rather than to those of the social system. But in recent years even this form of education, like almost all other forms has been changed and the education of adults and higher education have seemed to be converging as education for employability and for employees continuing to keep abreast in the ever-developing world of commercial knowledge is beginning to dominate the educational scene. Consequently, this paper will examine the way in which knowledge has been appropriated and used in the globalised economy of contemporary society. Finally, it will point to the way that lifelong learning has emerged. It has three parts: the first examines globalisation and the knowledge society, the second the nature of knowledge in the knowledge economy and, thirdly, the processes of lifelong learning.
