Ayn Rand, through her character Fransisco d’Anconia in Atlas Shrugged, taught that the Apostle Paul is wrong when he says money is a root of all kinds of evil. Instead, she argues that money is perhaps the greatest invention of humanity and is the foundation of civilization. In this article, Dr. Anderson challenges Rand’s understanding of good and evil first by comparing d’Anconia to Thrasymachus and then by considering good and evil in the Biblical Worldview. These connections make it possible to see how economics and religion are closely connected through basic assumptions about reality and our highest good. Without knowing our highest good we cannot make sense of either religion or economics.

This study focuses on potential athletic language in Phil 3:12-16. The main focus is the question what the assumption of the presence of athletic language in this text contributes to understanding it and especially its theological meaning better. The study consists of three parts. In part 1, the author analyses the preceding and the subsequent context of Phil 3:12-16 joining the defenders of a concentric structure: 3:1-11 (A), 3:12-16 (B), 3:17-4:1 (A’). The two framing sections (A and A’) focus on the opposition between Paul and his opponents, but the main point is Paul’s command to the Philippian addressees to “stand firm in the Lord”. Part 2 contains a brief exegetical analysis of 3:12-16. Our analysis focuses on the most important words (gaining/attaining; movement; thinking) and the goal of heavenly perfection with which they are connected. In the third part we analyse the potential athletic images in 3:12-16 which finds its “anchor point” in the noun τὸ βραβεῖον in 3:14. Based on the acceptance of this noun as an agonistic terminus technicus, other verbs and nouns which are not in and of themselves referring to athletics are interpreted as having an thletic meaning in our context. The study concludes with the caution that Paul counterbalances the “effort-reward scheme” of athletic language with the “giving-receiving scheme” of his call language. In this way, Paul introduces an emphasis on the future-orientedness of the message which is characteristic of his preaching and living.
Tematem niniejszego artykułu jest potencjalny język atletyki w Flp 3,12-16. Główny akcent skupia się na pytaniu, jak przyjęcie istnienia w nim języka atletyki przyczynia się do lepszego zrozumienia tego tekstu, a przede wszystkim jego teologicznej treści. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W części pierwszej autor analizuje poprzedzający i następujący kontekst Flp 3,12-16. Przychyla się przy tym ku poglądowi zwolenników struktury koncentrycznej: 3,1-11 (A), 3,12-16 (B), 3,17-4,1 (A’). W częściach obramowania (A i A’) chodzi o polemikę Pawła z jego przeciwnikami, przy czym głównym zamiarem Pawła jest wezwanie Filipian do tego, by „mocno stali w wierze”. Część druga artykułu zawiera krótką analizę egzegetyczną tekstu 3,12-16, która jest skoncentrowana na najważniejszych pojęciach (zdobyć, ruch, myślenie) oraz na celu niebiańskiej doskonałości, z którymi te pojęcia są związane. W części trzeciej zostają zanalizowane potencjalne atletyczne obrazy w 3,12-16. W oparciu o powszechną akceptację rzeczownika τὸ βραβεῖον w 3,14 jako agonistycznego terminus technicus, inne rzeczowniki i czasowniki, które same w sobie nie mają znaczenia atletycznego, zostają zinterpretowane jako odnoszące się do atletyki w kontekście tej perykopy. Na zakończenie autor artykułu zauważa, że Paweł jako przeciwwagi dla schematu „wysiłek-nagroda”, typowego dla języka atletycznego, używa języka powołania, wprowadzając schemat „dawanie-otrzywanie”. W ten sposób Paweł podkreśla ukierunkowanie na przyszłość, które jest charakterystyczne dla przesłania, które głosi i którym żyje.
Dieser Aufsatz hat die potentielle athletische Sprache in Phil 3,12-16 zum Thema. Das Hauptinteresse liegt auf der Frage, was die Annahme des Vorliegens von athletischer Sprache in diesem Text dazu beiträgt, ihn und insbesondere seinen theologischen Inhalt besser zu verstehen. Diese Untersuchung besteht aus drei Teilen. In Teil 1 analysiert der Autor den vorausgehenden und den folgenden Kontext von Phil 3,12-16. Dabei schließt sich diese Untersuchung den Vertretern einer konzentrischen Struktur an: 3,1-11 (A), 3,12-16 (B), 3,17-4,1 (A‘). In den beiden Rahmenteilen (A und A‘) geht es um die Polemik des Paulus gegenüber seinen Gegnern, wobei allerdings der Aufruf des Paulus an die Adresse der Philipper, „fest im Herrn zu stehen“, der Hauptpunkt des Paulus ist. Teil 2 enthält eine kurze exegetische Analyse von 3,12-16, welche sich auf die wichtigsten Begriffe (erreichen; Bewegung; denken) und auf das Ziel der himmlischen Vollkommenheit, mit dem sie verbunden sind, konzentriert. Im dritten Teil werden die potentiellen athletischen Bilder in 3,12-16 analysiert. Ausgehend von dem Substantiv τὸ βραβεῖον in 3,14, das allgemein als agonistischer terminus technicus akzeptiert wird, werden andere Verben und Substantive, dieals solche keine athletische Bedeutung haben, in diesem Kontext als athletisch interpretiert. Die Untersuchung schließt mit dem Hinweis, dass Paulus zum „Werke-Lohn-Schema“ der athletischen Sprache mit dem Gebrauch der Sprache der Berufung das „Geben-Empfangen-Schema“ als Gegengewicht einführt. So unterstreicht Paulus die Ausrichtung auf die Zukunft, die der Botschaft eigen ist, die er verkündet und lebt.

Na wstępie nie można zignorować faktu, że często podważa się autentyczność Pawłowego apostolatu. Nie mniej jednak, Apostoł Narodów był świadom swojego doświadczenia Jezusa Chrystusa, które całkowicie zmieniło jego życie. To stanowiące początek nowej drogi spotkanie, jako akt Bożej łaski, miało zapewnić o prawdziwości misji podjętej przed św. Pawła, co zostało potwierdzone przez pozostałych apostołów. Żywe doświadczenie Zbawiciela wzbudziło apostolską gorliwość św. Pawła, dzięki której założył on liczne gminy. Przepowiadana przezeń Ewangelia została mu powierzona i nie była żadną konfabulacją. Św. Paweł postrzega siebie jako sługę Jahwe, któremu przyświeca cel zgromadzenia raz jeszcze Reszty Izraela, niezależnie od konsekwencji. Apostoł Narodów ma pełną świadomość, że jedyną drogą do osiągnięcia owego zamierzenia jest własne poświęcenie. Z tego względu głosi Dobrą Nowinę nie w duchu ludzkiej mądrości, lecz jako „mądrość Krzyża”, która nieraz prowadzi do wyszydzenia i odrzucenia. Mimo tego zakłada on nowe chrześcijańskie wspólnoty, by zasłużyć na „niewiędnący wieniec chwały”.
To start with, we cannot ignore the fact that the authenticity of Paul’s apostolate is often questioned. However, the Apostle of Gentiles was aware of his experience of Jesus Christ that completely transformed his life. This fundamental encounter, an act of grace of God, serves as a guarantee of the veracity of Paul’s mission and this was confirmed by the other apostles. The vivid experience of the Saviour caused his apostolic fervour and the results: the numerous communities founded by Paul. The Gospel he preaches was entrusted to him and not made up. He sees himself as a servant of Yahweh whose objective is to assemble once more the Rest of Israel, whatever it takes. The Apostle of Gentiles knows it well that the only way to achieve this goal is by self-sacrifice. Therefore he brings the Good News not in the spirit of the human wisdom but the ‘wisdom of the Cross’ which often leads to being scorned and rejected. Despite this, he establishes the new Christian communities in order to “merit the incorruptible crown of glory”.

In Zusammenhang mit der Behauptung, dass Juden und Heiden gemeinsam am Bunde Gottes teilhaftig sind, wird der Römerbrief von Paulus von einem heilsgeschichtlichen Zug gekennzeichnet. In der Dynamik der Einführung der bisher ausgeschlossenen Heiden in die Liebe Gottes in Christus haben die Motive der Herrlichkeit und des Verherrlichen eine zentrale Bedeutung. Paulus unterscheidet dabei drei verschiedene Schritte: erstens der gemeinsame Grund des Naturgesetzes, zweitens die vorherige Wirkung der Barmherzigkeit Gottes und drittens die gegenseitige Annahme aller Gläubigen in die Kirche.
Stating that Jews and gentiles alike are called to share in God’s covenant, Paul’s Letter to the Romans is characterized by a perspective of salvation history. The motives of glory and glorifying play a central role in the dynamics of introducing the formerly excluded gentiles into the Love of God in Christ. Paul lines this process out in three stages: first the common ground of natural law, second the previous working of the mercy of God and third the mutual acceptance of all faithful in the Church.

The paper’s subject is about the interaction between the cult of the goddess Artemis and the cult of St Thecla of Iconium throughout the Eastern Mediterranean in the initial four centuries of Christianity in particular. Tematem artykułu jest interakcja między kultem bogini Artemidy a kultem św. Tekli z Ikonium we wschodniej części basenu Morza Śródziemnego, zwłaszcza w pierwszych czterech wiekach chrześcijaństwa. Zjawisko to jest badane w odniesieniu do literatury, miast, grup społecznych i osobistości związanych głównie z kulturowym spotkaniem wolnomyślnej, ale przerażającej bogini, obrończyni pustyni, dziewictwa i dzieciństwa, z dziewiczą bohaterką Krzyża i domniemaną apostolską towarzyszką Pawła w szerzeniu Logosu życia wśród narodów.

The Acts of the Apostles describes – sometimes in rather colorful details – signs and wonders wrought by the apostle Paul. Can this portrait of the apostle be corroborated based on his own letters? Or do we have to conclude that contemporaries of the apostle paint a more or less hagiographic picture of Paul’s miraculous activities? What is the place of miracles surrounding Paul and wrought by him within the whole of his life and mission?  A survey of Paul’s letters allows us to get a view of how the apostle sees the function of signs, wonders, and mighty works within the dynamics of the proclamation of the gospel. Viewed in this way, the possible difference between information based upon Paul’s own communication and that of his contemporaries about him appears to decrease. A clearer picture of the part miracles play within the whole of Paul’s mission may also help to rethink modern and post-modern worldviews from a biblical perspective.

We know more about than about any other follower of Jesus in the 1st century. Nevertheless, the apostle remains somewhat of a mystery. This discussion of the fourth-century commentary of Marius Victorinus on Paul’s epistle to the Galatians serves as a critical witness to late ancient understanding of Paul’s self-identification with the stigmata of Christ (of Gal 6:17), as the marks of his humiliating death on the cross. Echoing Paul on “being crucified with Christ”, Victorinus exhorted Christians to follow that example in suffering for their faith, warning them that suffering is inevitable. The present textual study uses linguistic, grammatical, rhetorical, and socio-historical analysis, particularly on the key terms, stigmata and mysterium. It concludes that Victorinus associated these terms to give meaning to trauma and suffering for Christians. The term mysterium in Victorinus’ work is closely associated with central aspects of Christ’s life and work, especially his crucifixion and death. While rejecting the “history of religions” school of thought on Christian liturgy borrowing from mystery religions, this study concludes that Victorinus’ use of the term mysterium reflects a move in fourth century Christianity to adapt language of the mysteries for the sacraments; more particularly, baptism is understood as a symbolic reenactment of Christ’s crucifixion, death and resurrection. Such an approach enhances the meaning of suffering in terms of service to Christ, for in baptism Christians share not only in Christ’s death, as suffering “with Christ”, but also in his resurrection, as victory over sin, suffering and death.

Autor jest zdania, że na poglądy filozoficzne Karola Marksa silnie oddziałała tradycyjna kultura żydowska z jej wysokim uznaniem dla pracy umysłowej, wiarą w cudowną genialność pewnych poglądów, ambicją życiową i jakiegoś rodzaju fatalizmem. Po drugie, co sam Marks wyraźnie podkreślał, jego filozofia pozostawała pod silnym wpływem Hegla. Po trzecie, i to jest główny cel tego artykułu, można wykazać, że Marks wysoko cenił poglądy Marcina Lutra i jego wpływ na przemiany religijne w Europie. Autor stawia sobie za cel prześledzić wspólne wątki przewijające się w dziełach Lutra i Marksa. Obaj określali sens ludzkiego życia przez zaangażowanie w wykonywanie ciężkiej i mozolnej pracy, umysłowej lub fizycznej. Obaj byli oburzeni naiwnością i ideologicznym zaślepieniem niewykształconych mas. Obaj uważali, że przyczyną zabobonnego myślenia była opresyjna wiara nasilająca strach przed wiecznym potępieniem lub przed głodem i zmuszająca lud do posłuszeństwa. Wreszcie obaj uważali, że bierność i naiwność można przezwyciężyć tylko przez rewolucję, która zajdzie w powszechnej świadomości i w warunkach ży cia. Obaj dążyli do takiej rewolucji, choć każdy do innej.

Opis:
According to the author, the legend about Zeus' grave was probably created as early as VIII or VII centuries BC, being a part of the common tomb cult in Early Greece. In this time the Mycenaean tholos graves began to be considered as tombs of the Greek heroes and gods. However, some Greeks raised an objection to the new form of the tomb cult. The belief in Zeus' grave was regarded as downright blasphemy by Epimenides (VII/VI century BC) and brought censure upon the Cretans for being liars. This is reflected not only in Callimachean Hymnus to Zeus (vv. 8-9), but also in a lost poem of Epimenides (probably in his Theogony). A fragment of this poem has been preserved in two Syriac commentaries to the Apostle Acts (17, 28). The English translation of these Syriac sources runs as follows: “The Cretans carved a tomb for thee, O Holy and High, / Liars, noxious beasts, evil bellies, / For thou didst not die, ever thou livest and standest firm / For in thee we live and move and have our being”. This fragment may been restored in the following shape: Τύμβον ἐτεκτΥναντο σέϑεν, Κύδιστε, Μέγιστε,Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται, κακὰ ϑηρία, γαστέρες ἀργαί.᾽Αλλὰ γὰρ οὐ σὺ ᾽ϑάνες, ζώεις δὲ καὶ ἵστασαι αἰεί,῎Εν σοι καὶ ζῶμεν καὶ κινύμεϑ᾽ ἠδὲ καὶ ἐσμέν. Both the second and the fourth verses were quoted by St. Paul, the former as an excerption from a poem of the Cretan seer, the latter as an anonymous quotation. Two remaining lines are convincingly restored on the basis of both Syriac translations. The attribution of this tetrameter to Epimenides, the well known Cretan prophet, poet and politician, seems certain. Thus some verses of the Callimachean Hymnus to Zeus had to be modelled on Epimenides' version of the birth-story of the Greek principal god. They contain an exact imitation of the prophet's words: “The Cretans always Liars” (Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται) and the same arguments: (1)both poets (i.e. Epimenides and Callimachus) reproached the Cretans for the lie; (2) both think congruently that the alleged Zeus' grave in Crete was a basic reason for arising the popular opinion on the lying character of the Cretans; (3) both deny the supposed death of Zeus; (4) both believe in the immortality of the god;(5) both criticize the different traditions, referring to the authority of a god (Zeus in the Callimachean hymn) or a hero (Minos in Epimenides' poem). Callimachus of Cyrene follows silently Epimenides, summarizing the same arguments, which permit him to reject the common version of the Zeus' birth-story in Crete. He also records some of Epimenides' aetiological tales, e.g. on the Omphalian Plain and the Mountain Panacra.
