Illegal Jewish Emigration from the Inter-War Poland to PalestineAlijah bet, that is illegal immigration of Jews to Palestine, the mandate territory of Great Britain, constituted a Jewish reaction to the policy of the British authorities which by supporting the Arabs, had gradually gone back on the promises made to the Jews in the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and had limited the possibilities of their emigration to the mandate. Alijah bet was unofficially supported by many countries, including the Polish authorities, which looked upon the Jewish emigration as a way of solving Poland’s internal social and political problems. Poland’s aid to the Jewish migrants was clandestine and it took on various forms and shapes; for instance, the authorities made it possible for the Jews to leave as “tourists.” The “tourist emigration,” as it was referred to, had lasted throughout the entire inter-war period, but it had become particularly intense in the thirties. The action was supported both by travel agencies and by various Jewish organizations. The “tourist emigration” was directed not only toward Palestine, but also toward other countries. The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimated that in the year 1938 around 4 thousand “tourist migrants” had left for Palestine, whereas in the first quarter of 1939 a further 6 thousand had departed from Poland; this meant that among the total number of illegal migrants, the number of Jewish citizens from Poland constituted a very large percentage of new arrivals. However the activities of the Polish authorities required caution as alijah bet was directed against the state with which Poland was linked by a military alliance and whose aid was very much counted upon, in the event of a war with Germany.

Poles in the Holy Land towards the end of 1949 Towards the end of 1949, the number of Poles living in the Holy Land was estimated to be at the level of 115–130 individuals. The majority of them, that is around 80 people, lived in Israel; the remaining ones lived on the Arab side (in Trans-Jordan). Among them, there were those who set up their own families here, as well as a dozen or so clergymen and a small group of post-World War II refugees. An interesting source material which allows one to get an insight into the scale and character of the Polish presence in the Holy Land in the first months after the end of the Arab-Jewish war, is a short but succinct note published in the Monthly Report of the Publishing Company “Reduta” (to be circulated internally) entitled “Sprawy Bliskiego i Środkowego Wschodu” (The Problems of the Near and Middle East). As can be seen from its content, the note had been drawn up by someone who was extremely well acquainted with the contemporary realities of life in Jerusalem. The current publication had been prepared on the basis of a copy of the periodical which was found in the collection of the Polish Library in London.

Anna Korwin jest brytyjską aktorką polskiego pochodzenia. Jej artystyczna osobowość najpełniej wyraziła się w teatrze, ale Korwin regularnie pojawiała się także w filmie i telewizji, gdzie wyspecjalizowała się w kreśleniu aktorskich miniatur. Wystąpiła m.in. w zrealizowanej przez BBC adaptacji Sagi rodu Forsyte’ów (reż. David Giles, 1967) Johna Galsworthy’ego. Znajomość kilku języków oraz kontynentalne pochodzenie predysponowały ją do ról postaci cudzoziemskich. Najważniejsze kreacje stworzyła już jako artystka dojrzała. Jest wśród nich tytułowa rola w monodramie o życiu i twórczości Marii Callas (według sztuki Jean-Yves’a Picqa), w którym nakreśliła interesujący psychologicznie wizerunek greckiej primadonny.
Anna Korwin is a British actress of Polish origin. Her artistic personality is most fully revealed in the theatre, but she also regularly appeared in film and on TV, where she specialised in creating small character parts. She took part in the BBC adaptation of John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga (dir. David Giles, 1967). Her continental background and knowledge of several languages predisposed her to play foreign characters. Her most important artistic creations were in her mature years. Among them the title role in the monodrama of life and work of Maria Callas (based on the play by Jean-Yves Picq), in which she presented a psychologically interesting portrait of the Greek prima donna.

Po II wojnie światowej w Wielkiej Brytanii znalazło się wielu polskich aktorów. W następnych latach, z różnych powodów (politycznych lub ekonomicznych), przybywali kolejni. Wielu podjęło wysiłek pozostania w zawodzie w nowym środowisku. Udało się to nielicznym. Na przeszkodzie stały: bariera językowa, wschodnioeuropejski akcent, brak znajomości miejscowych realiów i układów. W filmie Polacy pojawiali się najczęściej na drugim, trzecim planie i w epizodach. Zazwyczaj obsadzano ich w rolach cudzoziemców, głównie z Europy Wschodniej. Kilku artystów zdobyło jednak uznanie i regularnie pojawiali się w filmie i telewizji. Byli wśród nich m.in.: Władysław Sheybal, Izabella Teleżyńska, Krzysztof Różycki, Joanna Kańska, Gwidon Borucki. Artykuł jest próbą przybliżenia tego zjawiska.
After World War II in Britain there were many Polish actors. In the following years, for various reasons (political or economic), even more arrived. Many took the effort to remain in the profession in their new environment. Few were successful. The language barrier, Eastern European accent and lack of connections and understanding of local context stood in the way. In film Poles appeared most often on the second or third plan and in episodes. Usually they were cast as foreigners, especially from Eastern Europe. However a number of artists gained recognition and regularly appeared on film and on TV. Amongst them: Władysław Sheybal, Izabella Teleżyńska, Krzysztof Różycki, Joanna Kańska, Gwidon Borucki. The article brings us closer to their histories.
