Opis:
The Iconology by Cesare Ripa (1593), which constitutes a rich compendium of iconographic representations in which abstract concepts, virtues and vices were imagined through human figures and their attributes, features also the figures of old women. In the article the following questions are raised: Which of these concepts, virtues of human character, vices and inclinations are personified by “crones”, which by old women and which by women “in their prime”? Does the Italian iconographer motivate his choices and what explanations does he provide? What features were attributed to old age in the 16th and 17th centuries? And finally: how do ancient patterns of writing about old age and medieval stereotypes are reflected in Ripa's Iconology?

This paper presents the results of research on aluminum silicate sanitary glazes in the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-Na2O system with different SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio. XRD, SEM-EDS and FITR measurement indicated that SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio has a significant impact on the phase composition of the obtained glazes. Glass-ceramic glazes were obtained that consisted of both the glass phase and pseudowollastonite (Ca3[SiO3]3) or anorthite (Ca[Al2Si2O8]) crystals. Subsequently, the influence of phase composition on surface quality (roughness) was examined for the obtained samples. On the basis of the conducted examination of glaze surface roughness was observed that glazes of extreme SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio are characterized with greatest surface roughness when compared to other glazes.

Opis:
This work presents the first results on forming of multi-layered superhard coatings $Ti-Hf-Si-N//NbN//Al_2O_3$ and their properties as well as structure. Microstructure, elemental and phase compositions of multi-layered coatings obtained by different methods were investigated. There were used such methods as: scanning electron microscopy EDS JEM-7000F microscope (with microanalysis) for research of cross-section of coatings, with subsequent Auger-electron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, optical inverted microscope Olympus GX51, electron-ion microscopes Quanta 200 3D and Quanta 600 (scanning electron microscopy), equipped by the detector of X-ray radiation of the system PEGASUS 2000. It was stated that hardness of coatings has reached 56 GPa, and at the same time the factor of wearing during friction was the smallest - $2.571 \times 10^{-5}$. It was also noted that nitrogen pressure in the chamber at the deposition of the top layer significantly influences on the properties of samples. For example, the coefficient of friction at P=0.3 Pa from 0.2 at the beginning of track to 0.001 (during the tests), and at the pressure of nitrogen P=0.8 Pa, the coefficient of friction was equal to 0.314 at the beginning of track and 0.384 at the end (during the tests).

Opis:
Fuels combustion, polluting the atmosphere is a side effect of an engines’ work. Increasing ecological awareness has led to constant pursuit of disposing harmful substances properly. Catalytic converters (car catalysts), containing precious metals from the platinum group, including palladium, platinum and rhodium, have been commonly adopted for this purpose. These critical elements can be found in many raw materials used frequently throughout the economy. Therefore, it is economically viable to retrieve these elements from, among the others, spent catalysts, so they can be reused to manufacture new converters. In order to determine a possible cost of spent car catalyst, it is essential to use the analytical techniques to determine elemental content in any given sample. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) is an example of such a technique. It is nevertheless advisable to use a complementary procedure to confirm any results obtained. A cross-verification technique was developed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This procedure was verified using comparative studies, which confirmed its usefulness and correctness.
