    This article tries to show that research on Romanticism should focus not only on “high” literature. The subject of discussion is funeral speeches published in Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) in the Romantic time period. Not only did they use to be one of the forms of re-cording memory of the dead ones, but also prepared the reader to “meet” Romantic literature (by means of quotations, cryptoquotes, telling about A. Mickiewicz and Z. Krasinski’s life and career; introducing them into social awareness). They also proved vitality of Romantic topos (prophet, suffering motherland, poet). The paper presents closer the horizons of the reader’s expectations, as well as traces the pervasion of legends and Romantic myths into the way the biographies of heroes of funeral ceremonies are presented. One can see experiencing the history and nation, which leads to exploration of community identity, reception of reality as if “filtered” by sacred standards and the presence of cultural universe – a fusion of religion and patriotism common to all Pol-ish people.

    L’inédit recueil de Norwid Vade-mecum fût fini aux jours dans débuts du Parnasse contemporain, rien pourtant ne témoigne que son auteur s’en fût intéressé. Le cercle de Parnasse formé autour de Leconte de Lisle proclamait une modération de sensibilité et d’égotisme romantiques et aussi le culte de l’art pour l’art, initié jadis par Théophile Gautier. Il est très facile d’identifier tout esthétisme avec le programme du Parnasse, mais à vrai dire il y en avait beaucoup et différents. Norwid aussi demanda dans l’introduction de son recueil la liberté de l’art, sans la consacrer aux devoirs que pouvait exercer la presse, mais sans rénier ses devoirs envers le Vrai et le Bien. Il y avait, certes, quelques ressemblances entre le chef du Parnasse et Norwid: l’impopularité, l’indigence, une haute notion de poésie, l’intérêt pour l’antiquité et pour toute l’histoire, leurs personnalités pourtant étaient toutes différentes. Norwid était un fervent catholique et spiritualiste, et pas du tout néoclassiciste comme Leconte de Lisle dont la personne cache assez des mystifications retouchante son image ou mieux - son monument. Cette correction après le succès final du poète fait voir la différence du visage de Norwid qui mourut dans un asile pour pauvres émigrants polonais et dont le succès ne vint qu’après sa mort. Son art poétique surtout était différente de celle de Leconte de Lisle. Par exemple sa versification au temps de Vade-mecum ressemble plutôt à l’„Impair” de Paul Verlaine. Les grands mètres polonais étaient d’habitude impairs (de 13 ou 11 syllabe) et, sauf le très populaire 8-syllabe, tout le reste (dès 5 aux 14) était admis surtout dans les strophes lyriques. Les mètres nouveaux de Norwid, ou mieux ses métroïdes, étaient privés de césure médiane et un peu imprécis en nombre des syllabes. C’est cela qui rend leurs flexibilité, solubilité et vastitude. On peut comparer l’Art poétique de Verlaine avec les Cacka (Joujoux) de Vade-mecum pour conclure que Norwid devança le Parnasse et devint un précoce symboliste. Même la notion du monde réel menait le poète vers une création parabolique ou symbolique. Son style un peu énigmatique, plein de reticences, parait aussi plus symboliste que parnassien. Ces caractères de son art poétique différent bien de la précision et de la clarté parnassienne rendants un monde homogène et positif. Car les idées de Leconte de Lisle étaient d’accord avec celles de Renan et de Taine. Or, construire un prétendu courant parnassien polonais autour de Norwid est évidemment impossible. On a proposé le nom des parnassiens pour d’autres poètes, la question n’est pas donc nouvelle. Il faut d’abord exclure un tout petit cercle, ou plutôt une cotérie presque privée, qui prit le nom du „Parnasse polonais” vers la fin du XIXe. Les historiens de la littérature n’y consacrent point d’attention. Pour eux, l’épithète des parnassiens méritent: Felicjan Fa- lenski, Adam Asnyk, Maria Konopnicka et Wiktor Gomulicki. S’étaient vraiment des poètes éminents, mais ils n’ont formé aucun groupe lié, d’autant plus que les dates de leur naissances sont trop éparses (1825, 1838, 1842, 1851). Ce qui les unissait, le bon métier poétique, n’abolit pas des différences d’idées et d’inspirations. Falenski, contemporain de Leconte de Lisle et de Norwid, leur ressemble par son intérêt pour l’antiquité, pour l’histoire, il était néoclassique comme le chef du Parnasse français et fervent catholique comme Norwid. Sa tragédie Althée devance les Erinnyes d’un an et ses ballades barbares sont contemporaines aux Poésies barbares. Il démontra son originalité dans le Méandres, épigrammes rimés abbaab mais allusifs aux menus poésies de Kochanowski (Fraszki - Epigrammes). Son personnage était bien complexe ainsi que ses idées. Satyrique et humoriste, pessimiste croyant, il traitait parfois le monde réel comme une illusion rendue par la volonté d’existence. On reconnaît ici la doctrine de Schopenhauer qui n’était étrangère non plus aux idées d’Asnyk, un poète lyrique subtil comme Sully Prudhomme, mais toujours spiritualiste, même dans ses jeunes attaques contre l’Eglise. Konopnicka, poétesse dévouée aux humbles et aux idées sociales, puisait le mélodieux de ses vers dans le folklore mazovien, continuant le courant romantique représenté par Teofil Lenartowicz. Sa pitié pour les humbles fait penser à François Coppée, mais plus tard, vers la fin du siècle elle entra dans sa période esthétique, très noble et élevée. Gomulicki, poète citadin, amoureux du petit monde de Varsovie, étalait dans son art poétique les inspirations plutôt Baudelairiennes; quelques traits néoclassiques ne permettent pas assez de le traiter comme un vrai parnassien. La translation du terme „pamsase” dans les circonstances où vivaient et créaient les poètes polonais dans la seconde moitié du XIXe paraît trop arbitraire et trop mécanique pour être juste. Elle ne peut pas servir la périodisation littéraire et non plus la description des courants poétiques. D’habitude on nomme chez nous la période après la chute de l’insurrection de janvier (1863-1864) positivisme. En vérité un jeune cercle d’écrivains et publicistes, montant l'étendard du positivisme scientifique, proclame une littérature utilitaire et pragmatique, et se mit a combattre tout l’epichétieme. C’est Faleński qui devint une victime du combat avec d’autres „absectéietes”. Cette qwereie dns jeunes et des viens commença vers 1870 et aOa finir avant 1880. Mais elle n'autorise pas d’admettre une durable opposition de deux courants, car la victoire tomba en partage au réalisme. Il s’en suit que la notion du parnasse polonais n est pas juste, n est pas édatrcrasante, qu’elle est superflue.

    Opis:
    The contribution of Jakub Karol Parnas (1884-1949), a prominent Polish scientist, to the understanding of muscle biochemistry, including ammonia and carbohydrates sources and nucleotide metabolism, is described. Among his main achievements was the discovery of glycogen phosphorolysis, the first use of radioactive phosphorus in biological studies, and formulation and proof of phosphate transfer between glycolytic intermediates and ATP. The rewarding and successful life led by this man of great scientific and intellectual abilities up to the beginning of the Second World War, his dramatic fate during the war, and his tragic death in a Soviet prison reflects the turbulent 20th history of the region.

    Artykuł, zainspirowany poglądami Daniela Ferrera na genetyczną wariację jako proces zbudowany z wielu powiązań, a nie serię wolnych operacji podporządkowanych innym operacjom, przedstawia literacką genezę jako grę wariacji. Reguły gry można jedynie wstępnie rozpoznać po zidentyfikowaniu jej składników wynikających z tekstu i dokumentu. W artykule szczególną uwagę poświęcam analizie wariacji in absentia, czyli sytuacji, w której choć zapisana jest tylko jedna wersja tekstu, można zestawić ją z wersją, która będzie bliższa czytelnikowi (bądź bardziej oczekiwana). Wariacja in absentia jest istotna dla analizy zarówno tekstowych, jak i materialnych aspektów procesu pisania (np. zmiany układu na stronie, zmiany długopisu, zastąpienia pomocy pisarskich). W artykule śledzę ten rodzaj wariacji na podstawie szkiców Os Degraus do Parnaso (Stopnie na Parnas), kolekcji esejów wszechstronnego pisarza i analitycznego filozofa M.S. Lourenço (1936–2009). Dokładna interpretacja tekstowych oraz materialnych stałych i zmiennych, w zakresie pisowni i użycia narzędzi pisania, prowadzi do wniosku, że przypadki w tekście (elementy, które według W.W. Grega wpływają jedynie na formalną prezentację) nie są zawsze przypadkowe w genezie literackiej.
    The article, inspired by Daniel Ferrer’s view of genetic variation as a process built of many interconnections, rather than a series of free operations subordinated to other operations, presents literary genesis as a game of variation. The rules of the game can only be tentatively discern by identifying its components from text and document. In the article, I devote special attention to the analysis of variations in absentia, i.e. a situation in which, although only one version of the text is written, it can be compared with a version that is closer to the reader (or more expected). Variation in absentia is essential for analyzing both textual and material aspects of the writing process (e.g. page layout changes, pen changes, replacing writing aids). In this article, I follow this kind of variation from the sketches of Os Degraus do Parnaso (The Steps to Parnas), a collection of essays by the versatile writer and analytical philosopher M.S. Lourenço (1936–2009). Accurate interpretation of textual and material constants and variables, in terms of spelling and the use of writing tools, leads to the conclusion that cases in the text (elements that, according to W.W. Greg, affect only formal presentation) are not always accidental in literary genesis.

    The experiments I and II were conducted on 2 white mice, 5 Microtus arvalis, 2 Gamasides, 91 Hoplopleura acanthopus and 200 Polyplax spinulosa. For the experiments the influenza virus PR8 was used) As regards Microtus arvalis it was proved, that it is susceptible to the virus of influenza PR8. The susceptibility of Microtus arvalis proved to be not lower than that of white mice. The virus of influenza PR8 was isolated from the lungs of all the examined white mice and Microtus arvalis. In not a single case, however, the virus could be isolated from the Gamasides, neither from the Hoplopleura acanthopus nor from the Polyplax spinulosa in spite of the fact that undoubtedly in all the exarnined mice the virusal infection run in the from of virusemia. This is an indication that the Gamasides, Hoplopleura acanthopus and Polyplax spinulosa could not be infected with the virus of influenza PR8 (or that the virus was destroyed after the penetration to the organism of the Arthropoda with the blood of the host). The experiments should be repeated on a larger materiał and the virusemia of mice should be submitted to control. It appears that Microtus arvalis is a suitable animal for experimental infection with the virus of influenza.

    There was noted a high grade of sensibility of the louse Polyplax spinulosa Burm on the infoction with the virulent bacilli Brucella brucei. There was also proved a great sensibility of the louse Hoplopieura acanthopus on the infection with Brucella, this time with non-virulent strain S₁₉. We failed to infect experimentally the mite Gamasides with the bacilli Brucella which confirmed the results of our former experiments. In the investigations of the structure of colony, the activity of enzymes, the production of H₂S and the sensibility on thionine and fuchsine, the strains isolated from the louse Polyplax spinulosa Burm. were not different from the same strains before their entrance into the organism of the louse. Hamsters Mesocricetus auratus proved very little sensible on the infection with the virulent bacilli Brucella brucei. The results of the quoted experiments indicate the role of the louse in the circulation of bacilli Brucella among animals.

    1. The map presented shows complex field investigations undertaken by various institutes and aiming at research on diseases with natural foci. In 1953 and further, in the years 1955-1959 systematical zoological-ecological investigations were carried out in the foci of Szczecin and Lublin areas, the results of which are shown in table I. In the region of the Szczecin province 3 358 mammals were examined, and in the Lublin area 4 501 small mammals (partially other animals, too). 2. Ectoparasites were recovered from 2 200 mammals caught in the Lublin district. In the material collected in the period from 1.7.1957. to 1.7.1959. were found: 4 052 lice, 1946 fleas, 507 ticks of the Ixodidae family and some thousands of small Parasitoformes (tables II, III, IV). 3. From Microtus arvalis caught in natural foci of leptospirosis the following ectoparasites were examined on Brucella and Leptospira: Laelaptidae - 677 individuals, Hoplopleura acanthopus - 299, fleas - 9. The results of microbiological investigations were negative. 4. A negative result was also obtained with larvae and nymphs of Ixodes ricinus fed on 4 guinea pigs, 8 white mice and 4 Microtus arvalis, infected with a Leptospira grippotyphosa strain. 5. 278 lice Hoplopleura acanthopus were fed on Microtus arvalis infected with a virulent Brucella brucei strain, and a pure culture of this microorganism was isolated from them. This may evidence of a possible role of lice in the epizootiology of brucellosis in natural foci.

    Dans Le Nouveau Décaméron, Ernest d’Hervilly n’est désigné que deux fois pour raconter une histoire. Cette présence discrète, pour un conteur renommé et proche de Catulle Mendès, ne laisse pas de surprendre. En outre, pourquoi être allé chercher « Désirs d’ange » et « Night Bell » dans le corpus déjà considérable de ses recueils publiés ? À y regarder de plus près, les deux nouvelles sont pourtant très représentatives de la manière et de la personnalité de d’Hervilly. Ce diptyque, dont les deux volets contrastent violemment, reflète son talent de conteur, sa capacité à passer d’un genre littéraire à l’autre, son intérêt pour d’autres univers culturels et géographiques. En considérant aussi bien ces deux textes en soi que leurs paratextes lors des intermèdes entre devisants, le présent article souhaite esquisser le portrait d’un écrivain réservé et complexe, oscillant entre mélancolie et farce, sous l’étiquette un peu réductrice de « fantaisiste ».
    Ernest d’Hervilly opowiada w Le Nouveau Décaméron tylko dwie historie. Musi dziwić tak skromny udział cieszącego się przecież renomą twórcy opowiadań i bliskiego znajomego Catulle’a Mendèsa. Zaskakuje też fakt, że ze swojego pokaźnego dorobku rzeczy już wydanych autor wybrał właśnie „Désirs d’ange” i „Night Bell”. Bardziej szczegółowa analiza tych utworów pozwala jednak stwierdzić, iż są one reprezentatywne dla jego stylu i osobowości. Dyptyk ten, którego oba skrzydła wyraźnie z sobą kontrastują, odzwierciedla jego talent jako autora opowiadań, ukazuje zdolność przechodzenia z jednego gatunku literackiego do drugiego oraz zainteresowanie pisarza innymi przestrzeniami kulturowymi i geograficznymi. Poddając analizie zarówno same opowiadania, jak i paratekst zawarty w przerwach pomiędzy opowieściami, artykuł stara się przedstawić portret pisarza zarazem powściągliwego i niejednoznacznego, oscylującego pod uproszczoną etykietą twórcy fantazyjnego pomiędzy melancholią a żartem.
    In Le Nouveau Décaméron, Ernest d’Hervilly is requested only twice to tell a tale. Such a scanty presence for such a well-known author, and friend of Catulle Mendès, is somewhat surprising. And why select “Désirs d’ange” and “Night Bell” from amongst the plentiful works he had already published? Both stories, however, aptly show d’Hervilly’s style and spirit. They stand in deep contrast to, and mirror, his talent as a story-teller, his ability to vary the tales, and his interest in various geographical areas. Whilst considering these two tales, as well as the paratexts in between, this article aims to describe the portrait of a writer who is both complicated and modest, and who is constantly oscillating between jest and melancholy.

    An overview — even cursory — of literary culture in Lithuania in the first decades of the nineteenth century indicates there were many people who pursued poetry writing. According to Piotr Chmielowski, such a phenomenon did not exist then to this extent and with such intensity in any other part of Poland’s territory. As proof, in one of his works, he lists more than seventy names of poets who in the years 1815– –1822 had their poetry printed on the pages of journals published at the time. This number, certainly, does not fully reflect the scale of the said phenomenon. It should be noted that young people strove for a place on local poetry Parnassus, for example, also through parlor readings or through entries in memory books. Those young poets were often satisfied with minor, fleeting poems, handed from one person to another, without hope of the fruits of their poetic labor appearing on the pages of periodical press. Unfortunately, few of these poets possessed “talent above the mediocrity”, hence few manged to impress their audience. The paper aims to present selected views of contemporary audience concerning the poetry as its members also made an attempt at evaluation of the poems and aesthetic valorisation of the authors’ talent.
