Opis:
The article characterizes the main aspects of geopolitical relations between Poland and Ukraine. It presents a Russian impact on Ukrainian politics, the EU’s intention to affect the orientation of Ukraine and NATO’s ambitions on the eastern flank. The article indicates the transformations of the new statehood of Ukraine and its relationship with the environment. Russia makes the strongest political and economic impact on Ukraine. Russia has subdued Crimea, supports the rebellion in the east of Ukraine and seeks to maintain influence on the future orientation of the country. Geopolitical impacts of the European Union and NATO are more limited. In direct Polish-Ukrainian relations there is a Polish support for Ukrainian independence and the new government, elected after the events on the Maidan at the end of 2013 and in 2014. The effects of geopolitical conflict over the lands of Volyn and Eastern Galicia and disputes about land Zakierzonia (located west of the so-called Curzon line) put a shadow on these relations. The new Ukrainian authorities emphasize the activities of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) that contributed to the ethnic cleansing of Polish population. The effects of forced relocation of the Ukrainian population as part of the “Vistula” operation in 1947 are not comparable.

The Battle of Warsaw

Opis:
The Great War brought about the collapse of the old world order of the 19th century. The idea of the self-determination of nations, e.g. Ukrainians, Finns, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles etc., or multi-ethnic societies, e.g. Czechs and Slovaks, Slovenes-Serbs-Croats-Bosnians, etc., guided the new political order in Europe in 1918–1919. It was only partially possible to implement it due to the powerful influence of nationalism or (neo)imperialisms, such as in Soviet Russia and the USSR, or later with the Third Reich. In 1920, the societies of Ukraine and Poland tried to find an indirect path. The Polish-Russian/Soviet-Ukrainian war, symbolized by the Battle of Warsaw in 1920, turned out to be a breakthrough in these actions. On the basis of the effects of this so-called “dwarf war” gave rise to a new political and ideological imperialism in the USSR, as well as an ideology (1920) as a platform for cooperation and understanding between Poles and Ukrainians. Contrary to all assessments or interpretations, the signalled ideology of 1920 is a constructive factor in the history of Poland and Ukraine, based on the effects and experiences of the war of 1920–1921. This text is an attempt at a synthetic look at the genesis of the Polish-Russian/Soviet-Ukrainian war, mainly at its long-distance effects felt later in the Third Polish Republic and in free Ukraine in 2020. Perhaps these impact were also felt on a wider European scale. The text does not so much judge or evaluate the results of the previous research, but is an attempt to organize and generalize them. It may be a proposal for a possibly balanced view in the elites of both societies, a past that determines the future of Poland and Ukraine. Finally, it is an attempt to establish a long-term perspective that reduces political or (neo)nationalist emotions in favor of a balanced orderliness of knowledge.

perspective
Opis:
Since condemnation of operation Vistula by the Senate, we have conducted a „strategic partnership” policy towards Ukraine, expecting at most symbols, not calling for the memory of thousands of victims murdered in Volyn and Cherven Cities. Driven mainly by Russophobia, we supported the Orange Revolution and Euromaidan. On the latter, our politicians didn’t hesitate to join banderite shouts in front of portraits of Bandera and Shukhevych. We should not be surprised then that two hours after the address of the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski, The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted without discussion four Acts, which aim were: the recognition of the OUN and the UPA as fighters for Samostijna Ukraine, erasing from the collective memory shared 70-year history of the Ukrainian nation and increase of divisions in Ukrainian society. In Poland, the Acts have been passed over by the mass media (except for ”Przegląd” and “Nie”). Neither the issue have been raised by the Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz in talks with the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Groysman, nor by the Interior Minister Grezgorz Schetyna during his parliamentary speech on Polish foreign policy and it is even quite carefully sidestepped in the presidential campaign by all parties. Answering the question posed by “Przegląd” – “How Poland should react to the decisions of the authorities of Ukraine regarding members of the OUN and the UPA?” – advisor to the President of Poland, Professor Tomasz Nałęcz, stated, among others, “Let us remember that Ukraine is our neighbour and friend, therefore we should talk to it. I do not think the best way of conversation with a friend is to send a note of protest”. In 2010, we had the courage to raise the question of granting a title of Hero of Ukraine to Bandera and Shukhevych by W. Yushchenko and to persuade the European Parliament to express deep indignation (initiator: Paweł Zalewski from PO) and withdraw this Act. Now, all indications are that we lack this courage. It is very difficult to speak now about the future of Ukraine and Polish – Ukrainian relations. There are only very few groups, which speak now about the need to change of our eastern policy. The borderland communities haven’t obtained in our country organizations which would have an impact on foreign or even economic policy. It can therefore be assumed that regardless of who wins the presidential and parliamentary elections, Poland will continue to pursue a realistic and pragmatic policy, although resulting from Russophobia of Polish political elites and conducted by them historical policy. Previous actions of the Ukrainian authorities suggest that there may occur a scenario known to us from the period after the Orange Revolution. The current Ukrainian authorities do not seek to unite his people for a common goal, but they increase divisions in society. Ukrainian nation needs an agreement and consensus, not creation of new barriers. Polish experience shows that the actual legal, economic and political transformation needs a national consensus rather than replacing it with settlements with the past and nationalism. It seems that Poland irretrievably lost its positions of expert on East. As correctly pointed out Professor Andrzej Walicki “the prestige of Poland as a supposed export on Russia ceased to exist, because our position in Russian affairs is predictable and does not help to solve real problems”. Poland should act in order to end the conflict in Ukraine, at the same time attempting to understand both sides of the conflict. Different economic and geopolitic interests causes that the positions of various countries on the events in Ukraine are and will remain diverse. Louis Stomma wrote that “the sudden and incredible love of Poles for modern Ukraine is a sad love without reciprocity”. In the interest of Poland is striving for consensus and sensible mediation rather than setting up as a front-line state. A compromise is always possible, but if interest is not mixed with morals and national resentments. Preventing from compromise would reflect on the fate of the whole region and Ukraine would be harmed the most.

Since Ukraine’s independence, Poland has tried to support its pro-Western aspirations and the political and economic transformation. In the last time, however, we can observe a cooling of mutual relations, resulting primarily from discrepancies in the understanding of historical policy. Nevertheless, the reasons for this phenomenon may also be found in the events in Ukraine that took place in 2013- 2014 and which were later described as the Revolution of Dignity. The main aim of the article is to provide the answer to the question whether and to what extent the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine affected the mutual relations both in the political and social dimensions.

Opis:
Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation was one of the most momentous events for the East Central Europe in the second half of the 20th century. Religious hierarchs of both nations contributed a lot to interethnic reconciliation. Polish-Ukrainian rapprochement was remarkable for particularly involvement of representatives of the Catholic Church into this process and keeping aloof of Orthodox clergy from normalization of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The recommendations of the Second Vatican Council, encyclicals of Saint John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II and implementation of the principle “We forgive and are asking for forgivness” created preconditions for interethnic reconciliation. Saint John XXIII in his encyclical “Pacem in terris” had criticized the idea of peacekeeping by an arms race and the balance of power doctrine – “real and lasting peace between nations must be based not on a balance of power but on mutual confidence”. Activities of Pope John Paul II gave a powerful incentive to Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. The role of Churches as a kind of people’s diplomacy one could resort to increased when complicated interethnic problems weren’t managed to resolve at government level. The most important actions of Rome Catholic and Greek Catholic Churches in behalf of interethnic rapprochement were celebration of the 1000th Anniversary of the Christianization of Rus'-Ukraine, Eucharistic Congress in 2003, joint appeals on the occasion of Volhynian massacre. The achievement of Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation based on universal values and Christian civilization was an evidence of new European thinking and significant factor of building of the united Europe.

Since a Poland’s representative has not been involved at the negotiating group on normalization of the situation in Ukraine, intensity of Ukrainian-Polish dialogue on the highest level slightly reduced during 2014–2015. Direct contacts of Ukraine’s leadership with the leaders of Germany and France, which having signifi cant impact on making decisions within the EU and being eligible as partners in the negotiations for Russia, have positive effects. However, they have not allowed to fully using great potential of Ukrainian-Polish strategic partnership.

For this reason, it can be concluded that the press release has also always had a significant impact on the security of the state. The purpose of this article is to illustrate Polish‑Ukrainian relations, presented in the pages of the most important Polish‑language newspapers of Lviv in the second half of 1930, during the sabotage of Ukrainian nationalists in Eastern Lesser Poland and the repressive action conducted by the Polish authorities in consequence. The most widely read Polish newspapers in Lviv were selected for the purposes of the article. In order to show the whole of the discussed issue, archival sources and publications were also used.

Opis:
The text was submitted to the action to be taken by the governing conservative country on the eve of the outbreak of the World War I. The main problem was to reform the electoral law to parliament. Among conservatives prevailed in this case big difference. While Krakow conservatives were in favor of reform and related concessions to the Ukrainians, their East-Galician countrymen have in this case the opposite opinion. The author writes that this issue dominated also the campaign for the national parliament in 1913. The new chamber resumed negotiations on the issue. Finally, just before the outbreak of war reform was adopted. Unfortunately, the relations had already been so strained that the adopted draft has failed to appease them. At the end of his discussion the author concludes that the events of the years 1913–1914 were one of the main reasons that led to the outbreak of bloody Polish-Ukrainian war of 1918–1919.

Opis:
Volodymyr Lys is one of the most widely-read and recognisable contemporary Ukrainian writers, who has long established his position in the literary arena. He has written many novels, but he gained widespread popularity with the novel Jacob’s Century, which was reissued several times and even filmed for television. The author deals with many important topics within, such as issues of national identity, complicated Ukrainian history, memory, etc. However, the purpose of this article is to look at Volodymyr Lys’s work from the perspective of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The pages of the novel present a hundred years of the history of Ukraine in which its hero – Jacob Mekh – is also entangled. He tells the story of his life from the perspective of almost one hundred years, during which he was a citizen of Russia, Poland, Germany, the Soviet Union and, finally, a free Ukraine. The novel takes place in Polisie, which belonged to the Second Polish Republic before the war, and where the hero has many opportunities to interact with Poles. At first, these experiences are not very positive (meeting with the impoverished nobleman ‘master’, for example); however, when Jacob joins the Polish army, he manages to establish very good relations with his Polish commanders, and even marry a Polish noblewoman. An extremely moving moment in the novel is the attempt to deal with the tragic events in Volhynia in 1943. The author writes about these events with great sensitivity, avoiding a debate about who was guilty. He states that every death is a great tragedy and that both nations suffered a lot at that time. Contrary to numerous, often harmful stereotypes, as well as various assessments of past events made by historians and politicians from both Poland and Ukraine, Lys notes that not everything in the relations between these Poles and Ukrainians was bad, and that both were able to live side by side, creating a shared history. And although inequality, jealousy, protectionism and, sometimes, even a bit of contempt appeared in Polish-Ukrainian contacts, this Ukrainian writer argues that these two nations are more united than divided.

The article shows the influence of ethno-social problems on the Ukrainian-Polish relations in Right-Bank Ukraine. Author in the debate with researchers of the issued problem proves that at the late 18th and early 19th centuries Polish-Ukrainian relations weren’t of antagonistic character neither in the ethno-social nor in the ethno-political sphere. The author doesn’t idealize relations between Ukrainian peasants and Polish landowners, but argues that the nobility understood sense of human dignity and needed the support of the local inhabitants, especially after the defeat of the rebellion in 1830-1831. Peasants realized that their socialeconomic situation wouldn’t change: Russian landowners would come instead of Polish landowners. Therefore, there appeared political organizations aimed at complete emancipation of the peasants, transferring the lands to the property of peasants without compensation and the complete political equality irrespective of the social origin, religion and nationality.

The aim of this article is to show the Polish-Ukrainian relations before and at the beginning of World War II in the light of the selected borderland prose. The study shows that the relationship between the two nations was complicated in terms of socio-political process in the period before and at the beginning of World War II. 'ose relations, despite the alleged harmony and concord in the prewar period of time turned into traumatic conflicts at the beginning of the war. The culmination of it was a genocide of Poles carried out by the Ukrainians in collaboration with the Soviets and the Germans.

In this article the author explores the Ukrainian motifs in Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki’s poetry, which appear from the first volume to the last, so they are durable. At the beginning the research examines Dycki’s interest in the Baroque, because in this period Ruthenian (Ukrainian) motifs began to appear. The paper presents the theses on Eastern themes by Dycki, which were described by other researchers, to which the author referred and which he creatively developed. The article has stated that the theory of post-colonialism does not fully match the Polish-Ukrainian realities. In Dycki’s works we notice an attempt to build an idyll in Polish-Ukrainian relations, and at the same time its disintegration was shown. The author of the article has found an analogy for this attitude of alienation and disinheritance in the interpretation of the life and work of Jean Genet, which was presented by Jean-Paul Sartre in his book „Saint Genet, Actor and Martyr”. The research has reconstructed family relations with his father and mother in Dycki’s poetry, and also examined the function of Ukrainian words appearing in his poems.
Nowadays we can talk about an explicit Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation process of a Christian nature. Reconciliation between the two nations is aimed at overcoming negative stereotypes, overcoming conflicts in the symbolic sphere by referring to Christian axiology.

Opis:
Postcolonial Studies developed in a context of an anthropological turn in a modern humanities. When in the center of interests appeared problem of difference, otherness. Postcolonial critics read and deconstruct dominating attitudes and narrations towards others which are reflected in literature. At present, Polish postcolonial critic has started analyzed Polish narration about Borderlands and deconstructed Borderlands discourse as a dominating and colonial towards countries and nations which were a part of a eastern territory of Poland. In this article author discussed features of such a discourse on the example of travel essay about Ukrainians and Ukraine by contemporary writer and publicist Pavel Laufer Ukraine from the side of the rode, some times even from the ditch. Few side road thoughts.
Poland seeks correct stacking relations with all its neighbours. The quality of mutual Polish-Ukrainian relations is particularly important because of its direct relationship with the security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. Despite numerous efforts being made to support Ukraine in its path of reform by the Polish side there are still destabilizing factors.

Polish-Ukrainian relations in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century were very complicated. Apart from tensions resulting from the emerging national identity of both nations, economic issues were also important. The class divisions in this area coincided with the ethnic ones. The situation was also worsened by the enfranchisement carried out during the January Uprisingand the rapid growth of the rural population. All these factors contributed to bringing both nationalities into conflict which was one of the goals of tsarism’s policy.

Opis:
Gdy abp. Bilczewski, a potem abp.
The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky has become the leader of the Greek Catholic Church in the most difficult period of the Polish-Ukrainian relations. When he began his service as the archbishop, he assured that he respected the Poles. However, despite the mild beginnings, his politics were anti-Polish. Both during the Ukrainian- Polish war of Eastern Galicia in 1918 and during the World War II massacre of the Poles by the Ukrainian chauvinists in Volhynia and Eastern Małopolska, he behaved more like a politician than a priest. When first the archbishop Jozef Bilczewski and then the archbishop Boleslaw Twardowski asked him to try to stop the murders on Polish civilians, he pretended he did not know what was going on. Sometimes he acted as though he had forgotten that his major task was to preach the Gospel and in result the political interests of the Ukrainians were more important to him. Instead of attempting to unite the Poles and the Ukrainians, he supported Ukrainian nationalists in their fights with Poland. His approach led to a serious chilling of his relations with Polish bishops.

Opis:
In Poland after 1989 – after regaining sovereignty and initiating the socio-political transformation – there are many concepts of Eastern policy, which was also the result of dynamic changes in the Soviet . The process of emancipation of the united republics accelerated in the period of perestroika and steadily progressed. Its final effect was the disintegration of the Soviet empire at the end of 1991. Therefore various groups and political trends in Poland formed different concepts and visions of the Polish Eastern policy. In discussions on its shape more and more attention was turned to Polish-Ukrainian relations. One of the trends in formulating assumptions on the Polish policy towards the post-Soviet area was conservative parties and groups. Within this ideological option, represented by many parties and groups, many – often conflicting – ideas and visions of the Polish policy towards Ukraine were formed. The objective of this article is to present an overview of these concepts – formulated in the framework of the conservative trend.

Opis:
Today, problems related to intercultural communication are actively studied by representatives of various sciences. As a result of this study, many concepts related to intercultural communication have been introduced, which have become the subject of research in both scientific and practical fields. Often, in defining intercultural communication, representatives of cultural studies, sociology, psychology and linguistics emphasize their professional approach to this phenomenon and reflect their unique view of it. This article focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of intercultural communication and cultural exchange within the framework of Polish-Ukrainian relations in the context of current events, in particular Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Polish support for Ukraine has become important and has many aspects, including humanitarian aid, political support, and economic cooperation. This support contributes to strengthening mutual understanding and solidarity between the Polish and Ukrainian peoples, as well as promotes the exchange of culture and traditions. The article presents a study of cultural exchange and interaction between the Ukrainian and Polish communities during the military actions in Ukraine. Focusing on the period after the invasion, the study examines the intense cultural exchange that took place between the two national groups. This exchange included the exchange of art, literary works, musical performances, and other cultural expressions. It reflects the efforts of both nations to maintain friendly relations and promote mutual understanding in a complex geopolitical context. Cultural exchange contributes to the expansion of knowledge, deepening of understanding and perception of another culture. Art, literature, and other cultural expressions allow people to get acquainted with the world and traditions of other nations, which makes it possible to form common values and opens a dialogue between Ukrainians and Poles. This dialogue helps to increase mutual understanding and improve relations between these communities in the face of historical challenges. It also examines various practical aspects of organizing cultural initiatives and further developing interaction between Ukrainian and Polish cultural heritage after the Russian invasion. These aspects include the organization of joint cultural events, cultural exchange, joint projects in the field of education, and so on. The study opens up new promising horizons for understanding cultural interactions in the context of global change and contributes to deepening interaction between national communities.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the images of the Jewish pohrom in the short stories written by a Polish writer Maria Konopnicka “Mendel Gdański” (1890) and by the Ukrainian writer Leonid Pakharevsky “The Father” (1906). The research is made within a framework of comparative analysis. Both authors depict pohroms with an image of an old Jewish man caring for his children or grandchildren. In the wake of anti-Jewish riots the protagonists are undergoing deep personal changes. Mendel loses his love for his city, while Leisor loses his passionary illusions and became involved in an armed struggle for freedom. Konopnicka focuses on the natural belonging of the Jewish population to Polish society and more broadly to the Eastern European multicultural space. Pakharevsky outlines the generation gap. While the older Jews accepts death without resistance, guided by faith in the promised biblical land, the younger Jews denies these illusions and defends their life resolutely. In addition, Konopnicka and Pakharevsky are looking for preconditions for the pohrom. According to them, the only reasons are social prejudices, stereotypes, as well as a criminal factor, to wit the role of criminals and lumpen in anti-Semitic actions. Both short stories use the technique of instilling a sense of danger, although Pakharevsky’s story begins with a scene of fire and a direct attack. Eventually, the pohroms indeed lead to a real escalation of hostility and a painful rift between the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds. In closing, these stories are not only about the genesis and the course of anti-Semitic pohroms, but also universal categories. Importantly, the process of self-determination of the Jewish people nowadays and the renewal of Jewish identity are intelligently represented here.
