Opis:
This article summarizes current knowledge on the genetics and possible molecular mechanisms of human pathologies resulted from mutations within the genes encoding several myosin isoforms. Mutations within the genes encoding some myosin isoforms have been found to be responsible for blindness (myosins III and VIIA), deafness (myosins I, IIA, IIIA, VI, VIIA and XV) and familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (β cardiac myosin heavy chain and both the regulatory and essential light chains). Myosin III localizes predominantly to photoreceptor cells and is proved to be engaged in the vision process in Drosophila. In the inner ear, myosin I is postulated to play a role as an adaptive motor in the tip links of stereocilia of hair cells, myosin IIA seems to be responsible for stabilizing the contacts between adjacent inner ear hair cells, myosin VI plays a role as an intracellular motor transporting membrane structures within the hair cells while myosin VIIA most probably participates in forming links between neighbouring stereocilia and myosin XV probably stabilizes the stereocilia structure. About 30% of patients with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have mutations within the genes encoding the β cardiac myosin heavy chain and both light chains that are grouped within the regions of myosin head crucial for its functions. The alterations lead to the destabilization of sarcomeres and to a decrease of the myosin ATPase activity and its ability to move actin filaments.

In this document, the authors present the results of the long-term monitoring of the condition of the eyes of victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe. The patient examinations were conducted using our system of standard inspection and description of the condition of the eye. We have summarized the development of this system in another paper. Ocular effects in patients as a result of the Chernobyl accident have been classified either as specific irradiation injuries, attributable only to radiation exposure, or ophthalmopathology that is observed under normal conditions, but for which radiation exposure is an important risk factor. This division is particularly apparent when examining the clean-up workers in Chernobyl.

Opis:
Regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes involves many complex processes, in which chromatin structure plays an important role. In addition to the epigenetic effects, such as DNA methylation and phosphorylation or histone modifications, gene expression is also controlled by the spatial organization of chromatin. For example, distant regulatory elements (enhancers, insulators) may come into direct physical interaction with target genes or other regulatory elements located in genomic regions of up to several hundred kilobases in size. Such long-range interactions result in the formation of chromatin loops. In the last several years, there has been a rapid increase in our knowledge of the spatial organization of chromatin in the nucleus through the chromosome conformation capture (3C) technology. Here we review and compare the original 3C and 3C-based methods including chromosome conformation capture-on-chip (4C), chromosome conformation capture carbon copy (5C), hi-resolution chromosome confomation capture (HiC). In this article, we discuss different aspects of how the nuclear organization of chromatin is associated with gene expression regulation and how this knowledge is useful in translational medicine and clinical applications. We demonstrate that the knowledge of the chromatin 3D organization may help understand the mechanisms of gene expression regulation of genes involved in the development of human diseases, such as CFTR (responsible for cystic fibrosis) or IGFBP3 (associated with breast cancer pathogenesis). Additionally, 3C-derivative methods have been also useful in the diagnosis of some leukemia subtypes.

Voice pathology assessment using sustained vowels has proven to be effective and reliable. However, only a few studies regarding detection of pathological speech based on continuous speech are available. In this study we evaluate the usefulness of various regression models trained on continuous speech recordings from Saarbruecken Voice Database in the detection of voice pathologies. The recordings were used for extraction of speaker embeddings called x-vectors based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and gammatone frequency cepstral coefficients. Since the dataset used in this study is imbalanced, various over- and undersampling techniques were applied to the training set to ensure robustness of models’ decision boundaries. The models were trained on both imbalanced and resampled training sets using 5-fold cross-validation. The best results were obtained for Multi Layer Perceptron trained on GFCC-based x-vectors, achieving accuracy of 0.8184, F1-score of 0.8212, and ROC AUC score of 0.8810 for the testing set.

Automatic detection of voice pathologies enables non-invasive, low cost and objective assessments of the presence of disorders, as well as accelerating and improving the process of diagnosis and clinical treatment given to patients. In this work, a vector made up of 28 acoustic parameters is evaluated using principal component analysis (PCA), kernel principal component analysis (kPCA) and an auto-associative neural network (NLPCA) in four kinds of pathology detection (hyperfunctional dysphonia, functional dysphonia, laryngitis, vocal cord paralysis) using the a, i and u vowels, spoken at a high, low and normal pitch. The results indicate that the kPCA and NLPCA methods can be considered a step towards pathology detection of the vocal folds. The results show that such an approach provides acceptable results for this purpose, with the best efficiency levels of around 100%. The study brings the most commonly used approaches to speech signal processing together and leads to a comparison of the machine learning methods determining the health status of the patient.

During the study authors stated that the main determinant of demoralisation of youth, joining scarfers subcultures, where they act with aggression and brutal violence, are disturbances in the process of their education and socialization. They have presented, in their opinion, the most important factors determining the processes leading to deviant and pathological behaviour of youth, whose negative final is criminal activity. These determinants, in their opinion, are: family environment, school, peer group and negative social background. According to the researchers, occurrence of dysfunction in these areas results in criminalisation of the youth, which takes place in an informal group, which are the scarfers. The authors conclude that it is necessary to start comprehensive programs aimed at improving situation in family, schools, which in addition to implementation of educational process, should focus their attention on pedagogical work. Without taking into account, in a comprehensive way, all of the indicated factors, we cannot achieve the goal of normalisation of environments associated with fans.

Indexing methods are very popular in terms of determining the degree of disability associated with motor dysfunctions. Currently, indexing methods dedicated to the upper limbs are not very popular, probably due to difficulties in their interpretation. This work presents the calculation algorithm of new SDDI index and the attempt is made to determine the level of physical dysfunction along with description of its kind, based on the interpretation of the calculation results of SDDI and PULMI indices. Methods: 23 healthy people (10 women and 13 men), which constituted a reference group, and a group of 3 people with mobility impairments participated in the tests. In order to examine possibilities of the utilization of the SDDI index the participants had to repetitively perform two selected rehabilitation movements of upper extremities. During the tests the kinematic value was registered using inertial motion analysis system MVN BIOMECH. Results: The results of the test were collected in waveforms of 9 anatomical angles in 4 joints of upper extremities. Then, SDDI and PULMI indices were calculated for each person with mobility impairments. Next, the analysis was performed to check which abnormalities in upper extremity motion can influence the value of both indexes and interpretation of those indexes was shown. Conclusion: Joint analysis of the both indices provides information on whether the patient has correctly performed the set sequence of movement and enables the determination of possible irregularities in the performance of movement given.

The article presents therapeutic actions toward restoring linguistic and communicative competence, and its aim is to show how music therapy enriches the methods of speech‑language rehabilitation. The rise of music therapy and speech‑language pathology as scientific disciplines was gradual and started almost exactly at the same juncture, i.e. at the beginning of the 20th century. The origins of both go back in time to the remote past, and both are characterized by an interdisciplinary nature. The methods of music therapy are in line with the speech‑language therapy scenario: – eurhythmics, initially supporting education and upbringing, stimulates psychomotor development in a versatile manner, – speech‑movement therapy supports general and motor development and aids speech capabilities, – the Good Start method is applied for children with reading and writing difficulties and has a corrective‑compensatory influence, – mobile music recreation stimulates the development of children suffering from cerebral palsy, – high‑frequency sounds in the Tomatis method have a therapeutic effect for memory disorders, school‑related difficulties, dyslexia, autism, and emotional disorders, – singing, which is a traditional method of music therapy, is widely applied in speech therapy for neurological disorders and in the treatment of stammering, as well as in psychosocial rehabilitation.

It depends on complex social dynamics rooted in religion, science, various groups of interests, and engagement of moral crusaders. Some time ago, this extremum was represented by masturbation; currently, pathological epicenter is occupied by pedophilia. This phenomenon can be placed and analyzed within various frames of reference. The one used in this article is labeled as moral panic.

Opis:
The theme concerns with the parish leadership functional dimensions. There exists a set of parish leadership phenomena which can be called pathological. On the one hand these are behaviours from the sociological point of view appreciated negatively as they deviate from the normative Church system. On the other, however, these are symptoms reflecting the abnormalities and inefficiencies of functioning of ecclesiastical institutions, characterized by deviations from model assumptions. The author concentrates himself on ten aspects of the problem, which — as it seems — are of crucial importance in revealing the severe pastoral difficulties of today. Among other things he tries to answer the questions: should the parish community leader have the traits of a superior or of a leader; which functions performed by priest are of principal importance; which goals — particular or communal, material or spiritual satisfactions should determine his daily activity; should one prefer the position achieved by individual (the stabilization tendencies in parish leadership) or the daily activity based on qualifications (change contra status)? The problems of distorting of informations, overloading by precepts and of anonymity in intra-parish relations pertain to various forms of bureaucracy, which is negatively assayed in view of essential goals of the Church. The issues taken in the form of two alternatives: the giant parishes or micro-parishes and autonomy or dependency, are connected with certain „afflictions” of parish organization structure. The analized functional abnormalities of parish leadership are obvious in confrontation with model functioning. The social harmfulness and discordance with socio-religious goals broadly viewed allow to treat them as pathological symptoms. The prophylactic activity should be based on the possibly earliest pointing at the principal pathological features of parish leadership and on providing the rich means of their elimination. In parish and Church there exist enormous social powers facilitating the counteraction against the functional abnormaities and facilitating the improvement process and the increase of organizational efficiency.

Objectives: The aim of the paper was to prove that job conditions impact the state of the afferent part of the somatosensory system in miners. Materials and Methods: Data analysis of the electrophysiological examination of the syndrome in 148 patients, aged from 28 to 55 years, with a mild, moderate and severe degree of the pain syndrome was performed. The control group included 28 people without any pain symptoms. The method used was that of somatosensory stimulated potential (SSP) with the potentials amplitude and latency main components taken into consideration. Results: It was proven that the true decrease of the somatosensory stimulated potential SSP N22 (p < 0.05) component amplitudes by 41%; N30 component amplitude tend to decrease by 26%. This proves that the true N22 (p < 0.01) component latency increase by 63.8% corresponds to afferent excitation wave conductibility under the pain syndrome of vertebral pathology through sensitivity pathways mainly in the posterior spinal cord columns and then, through the parts of the brain stem, involving the cerebral cortex, which is confirmed by the fact that the P38 and P46 components amplitudes tend to decrease. In addition to this, the proven N10–N13 (p < 0.05), N13–N20 (p < 0.05), N10–N20 (p < 0.05) intervals increases by 43.5–41.8–38.7%, respectively, correspond to the nervous impulse conductibility through the peripheral nervous system structures and allow to reveal the subclinical slowdown of impulse conductibility, which indicates that the conducting system is changed even under a mild pain syndrome. Conclusions: It was found that the data obtained allow for the better understanding of how the neuropathological pain syndrome under vertebral spine pathology is formed.

The seasonal variations and pathological manifestation of the acanthocephala infestation were investigated from southeast coast of India. The adult worms’ proboscis is cylindrical, the length and width ranging between 1.2-7.3 cm and 1.0-1.8 mm respectively. Caranx ignobilis was the major host in terms of prevalence and intensity among the other fish species examined for infestation and seasonal variation of Acanthocephalus ranae over three year period. The higher prevalence of infested fishes Caranx ignobilis (61.8% ±1.8), Seriolina nigrofasciata (48.6% ±1.3) and Dayseiaena albida (38.5% ±1.8) were observed. Mean intensities ranged between 5.8 and 12.6 worms per fish. Grossly, the parasites attached tissues were wounded, reddish, swollen, abraded and thickened. Histologically, the infested intestinal outer wall of the muscularies extema and tip of the proboscis is still inverted; Hyperplasia of the intestinal villi and lamina propria near the site of parasitic attachment were also evidenced. Cellular infiltrated area surrounding the proboscis, aggregation of lymphocytes and fibroblasts at the site of inflammation were observed from the parasitized intestine. The lesions were infiltrating with basophil-like inflammatory cells. The histological findings revealed that the pathological injure was depends on the density of the parasitic burden and depth of the proboscis penetration into the host intestine. Long live parasite increases the cellular infiltration and it may leads to the tumorous conditions of the infested hosts.

Opis:
In terms of specialization in social influence, the sphere of international relations is one of the most specific fields of social activity. Competitive and anarchized structure of international interactions works in favor of standard’s relativization and dispersion of responsibility, which provokes use of ambiguously evaluated means of pressure. Legitimacy gained from Machiavel lian paradigm of effectiveness puts term of manipulation on the higher level in hierarchy of strategic social influence. The scope of its potential use is as broad as the field of diffusion between different scientific approaches to the issue of international manipulation. This shows the background for synthetic conception of social control, which simultaneously involves interest of various academic disciplines such as psychology, sociology and political science. Despite difficulties in grasping an equivocal substance of manipulation, both historical and theoretical context of its occurrence lead to consideration about its structural role in transformation of international sphere. Beyond the field of political realism, the case of legitimacy for manipulative influence is also undertaken within the reach of theories of constructivism. Suitable references to this issue reflect concepts of social control originally related to categories of rhetoric, diplomacy and propaganda. Under the common denominator of civil development strictly bounded to improvement of influential content and its distribution, all of mentioned factors build a wide area for research on manipulation within international environment.

Opis:
With the growth of societies in size, complexity and diversification, the obtaining formal and informal factors of social control become insufficient, which contributes to the rise of social pathology. The paper contains an overview of definitions of the con-cept of social pathology and theories explaining the sources of social pathology: struc-tural tensions, conflicts, stigmatization, control and variegated relationships between them. The sources of the negative phenomena are also related to the effects produced by processes of socio-economic, cultural and political transformations. Social pathology can have both an individual and a collective dimension. Indivi- dual pathology may be linked to alcoholism, drug-taking, prostitution, suicide or indi-vidual crime commitment. The individual pathology affects mainly its bearers but its effects constitute a danger to their nearest environment (including their families), groups or the whole society. It is difficult and hardly effective to counteract social pathology. It requires an enormous input of efforts and means. It necessitates a co-operation of involved institu-tions, including governmental ones, such as the police, prosecutors, courts, prisons, health care, social assistance institutions and non-governmental ones, such as founda-tions, MONAR, etc. It is possible to implement various strategies – both non-repressive and repressive ones. A broadly conceived prevention, meaning preventing pathological phenomena from arising, should be the main instrument of the counteraction.
