Opis:
Semenov’s Fir (Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.) is an extremely rare species in the wild and is included in the International Red List of Conifers and into the Red Data Books of the former USSR and Kyrgyz Republic. Our investigation confirms that this is an independent species, related but not identical to Abies sibirica Ledeb. It has been cultivated at Peter the Great Botanic Garden of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science(s), St.Petersburg, since 1949. Apparently, it was here that Semenov’s Fir was first introduced into cultivation in European gardens. It has produced seeds since 2000, when it was less than 43 years old. It is a hardy and ornamental tree that deserves wider distribution in cultivation in the gardens and parks of North-West Russia. It is proposed that Semenov’s Fir should be given independent taxonomic status as a separate species, Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.

Opis:
The history of taxonomy and problems with identification of two very similar and closely related dogwoods Cornus alba and C. sericea are discussed. They were described by Linnaeus on the basis of flowering cultivated specimens of unknown origin. When characterizing their fruits, Linnaeus got the information from the older, “pre-Linnean”, literature and wrote that they were white in C. alba (Linné 1767) and black in C. sericea (Linné 1771). It was soon pointed out that both taxa had white fruits, however, their specific identity has not been questioned for a long time. Cornus alba and C. sericea are considered to be geographically isolated – the former is recorded from Siberia and NE Europe, while the latter from North America, but both dogwoods are often cultivated and naturalize in many places outside their natural ranges. In European dendrological literature, in which both plants are usually mentioned, there are permanent controversies concerning the differences between them. Attempts are still made to distinguish them, mainly on the basis of their stones and leaf shapes. Narrow stones and abruptly narrowed leaf apex have been attributed to C. alba, while broad stones have been said to be characteristic to C. sericea. Our analysis reveals that shapes of stones of discussed taxa are very variable and their ranges of variability overlap to a considerable extent. The similar kind of variability can be observed in the shape of leaves of both dogwoods. In C. alba leaf blades are most often broadly elliptic and abruptly narrowed, while in C. sericea they are most often broadly ovate and gradually narrowed at the apex. It must be said that there are also numerous exceptions to the above scheme. The filigree pattern of cuticle and the wax crystals on the abaxial leaf surface are sometimes useful for distinguishing C. alba and C. sericea. Unfortunately both features are also variable as those characterized above. Taking into consideration the great similarity of discussed dogwoods and difficulties with their identification, in our opinion the broad species concept of C. alba (including C. sericea) is most reliable and practical. However, as it appears from presented results, both taxa are not fully identical, so the rank of subspecies proposed by Wangerin (1910) – C. alba L. subsp. alba and C. alba subsp. stolonifera (Michx.) Wangerin, seems to be most appropriate in their case. It facilitates identification of wild plants of C. alba s.l. both in flowers and fruit as well as in the vegetative state. It also helps avoid controversy with the classification of cultivars of uncertain origin.

Opis:
Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Siberian spruce (P. obovata) are among the most important forest-forming coniferous species in the boreal part of Eurasia. Despite numerous publications on the taxonomy of Norway spruce and closely related taxa (P. obovata Ledeb. and P. fennica (Regel) Kom.), the problem of their identification, as well as clarification of their taxonomic status, has not been solved so far. Species delimitation is particularly challenging when P. abies, P. obovata and P. fennica occur in sympatry. Our study aims to assess taxonomic value of proposed earlier and search for stable diagnostic characters of cones and their scales to distinguish Picea abies and its sympatric in the North-West of Russia P. fennica and P. obovata. In addition, we analyzed and updated information on geographical distribution and phytocenotic characteristics of the above-mentioned species in the North-West of the European part of Russia. We examined herbarium specimens and cones sampled from 88 trees from 22 Picea stands located throughout the study region. Each tree was represented on average by 5 cones, in total 415 cones were analyzed. Morphometric analyses included 16 morphological characters of cones and their scales selected based on our own observations and published data. Multivariate comparison had shown a large overlap between P. obovata and P. fennica, while individuals of P. abies formed a separate and less overlapping cluster. Among the six qualitative (discrete) characters, shape of seed scale and shape of its upper margin have non-overlapping frequency distributions and can separate P. abies and P. obovata. Several new diagnostic characters are proposed: morphology and size of bract scales and ratio of the size of seed scales and bract scales. Phytocenotic analysis showed that different spruce taxa occupy specific habitats, which in their turn connected with the latitudinal gradient: in normally drained habitats, Picea obovata is found mainly in poor shrubby-green-mossy forests, which are typical of the northern and middle parts of the Northern taiga; Picea abies – in richer green-mossy habitats (Vaccinioso-hylocomiosum, Oxalidoso-hylocomiosum, Hylocomiosum), which begin to occur already from the middle part of the Northern taiga. Picea fennica occupies both habitats.

A review of some experimental results obtained using the dense plasma focus (DPF) device PF-1000 is presented. The copper Ka1,2 radiation line generated by DPF in the case of device anode made of copper was the main object of this study. The predominance of this characteristic radiation over other kinds of radiation in the DPF X-ray spectrum is shown. A brief description of a new DPF 6.0 device as well as a radioenzymology experiment carried out within this device is presented.

Opis:
A review of results on the design and operation of the new efficient Dense Plasma Focus device PF-6 of medium size (transportable) having bank energy of ca. 7 kJ and possessing a long lifetime is presented. New data on the interaction of the pulsed fast ion beams and dense plasma streams generated at this apparatus with various materials are given. These results are compared with the analogous information received at the biggest facility PF-1000. It is shown that it is possible to have about the same power flux density (in the range of 105 109 W/cm2) in both devices however in different areas. Doses of soft X-rays produced by the device within the resists for the goals of microlithography and micromachining appear to be several times less that it is with the conventional X-ray tube. In biological application of this device, medium- and hard-energy X-rays are exploited in the field of radioenzymology. It was found that the necessary dose producing activation/inactivation of enzymes can be by several orders of magnitude lower if used at a high-power flux density in comparison with those received with isotope sources. In medicine, short-life isotope production for the goals of the positron emission tomography (medicine diagnostics) is possible by means of the fast ions generated within DPF. All these experiments are discussed in the framework of pulsed radiation physics and chemistry in its perfect sense thereto the criteria are formulated.
