Opis:
This article deals with cognitive aspects of artistic translation based on the example of translations of Herta Müller’s oeuvre into Polish and Czech. The reader of Herta Müller’s novels in translation seeks to get to know / acquaint onself with otherness in / through translation, which will be familiar to him or her in a manner consistent with the idiomaticity of the source language. Cognitive values are especially present in the topic offered by Herta Müller, that is, what living in a communist dictatorship means: constant fear of the secret police, reporting to authorities, individual incapacitation, censorship, thus — topics known to Czech and Polish readers from their own history.

Opis:
Dead time parameter of Geiger-Müller (G-M) counters causes a great uncertainty in their response to the incident radiation intensity at high counting rates. As their applications in experimental nuclear science are widespread, many attempts have been done on improvements of their nonlinear response. In this work, response of a G-M counter system is optimized and corrected efficiently using feed forward artificial neural network (ANN). This method is simple, fast, and provides the answer to the problem explicitly with no need for iteration. The method is applied to a set of decaying source experimental data measured by a fairly large G-M tube. The results are compared with those predicted by a given analytical model which is called hybrid model. The maximum deviation of the corrected results from the true counting rates is less than 4% which is a significant improvement in comparison with the results obtained by the analytical method. Results of this study show that by using a proper artificial neural network structure, the dead time effects of G-M counters can be tolerated significantly.

Lingulide brachiopods, assigned to Lingula dregeri Andreae, 1893, have been identified from the Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) of the Hungarian part of the Pannonian Basin. Although widely distributed in the Miocene of the Central Paratethys (Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Romania), the genus Lingula was not described previously from Hungary. Outside of the Central Paratethys, L. dregeri also has been recognized in the Atlantic and Mediterranean provinces and most probably in the Eastern Paratethys.

Opis:
Cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) preferentially liberates arachidonic acid (AA), which is known to be elevated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between enhanced nitric oxide (NO) generation observed in AD and cPLA2 protein level, phosphorylation, and AA release in rat pheochromocytoma cell lines (PC12) differing in amyloid beta secretion. PC12 control cells, PC12 cells bearing the Swedish double mutation in amyloid beta precursor protein (APPsw), and PC12 cells transfected with human APP (APPwt) were used. The transfected APPwt and APPsw PC12 cells showed an about 2.8- and 4.8-fold increase of amyloid β (Aβ) secretion comparing to control PC12 cells. An increase of NO synthase activity, cGMP and free radical levels in APPsw and APPwt PC12 cells was observed. cPLA2 protein level was higher in APPsw and APPwt PC12 cells comparing to PC12 cells. Moreover, phosphorylated cPLA2 protein level and [3H]AA release were also higher in APP-transfected PC12 cells than in the control PC12 cells. An NO donor, sodium nitroprusside, stimulated [3H]AA release from prelabeled cells. The highest NO-induced AA release was observed in control PC12 cells, the effect in the other cell lines being statistically insignificant. Inhibition of cPLA2 by AACOCF3 significantly decreased the AA release. Inhibitors of nNOS and γ-secretase reduced AA release in APPsw and APPwt PC12 cells. The basal cytosolic [Ca2+]i and mitochondrial Ca2+ concentration was not changed in all investigated cell lines. Stimulation with thapsigargin increased the cytosolic and mitochondrial Ca2+ level, activated NOS and stimulated AA release in APP-transfected PC12 cells. These results indicate that Aβ peptides enhance the protein level and phosphorylation of cPLA2 and AA release by the NO signaling pathway.

Opis:
The primary goal of the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEGIS) collaboration is to measure for the first time precisely the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen, H̅, a fundamental issue of contemporary physics, using a beam of antiatoms. Indeed, although indirect arguments have been raised against a different acceleration of antimatter with respect to matter, nevertheless some attempts to formulate quantum theories of gravity, or to unify gravity with the other forces, consider the possibility of a non-identical gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. We plan to generate H̅ through a charge-exchange reaction between excited Ps and antiprotons coming from the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. It offers the advantage to produce sufficiently cold antihydrogen to make feasible a measurement of gravitational acceleration with reasonable uncertainty (of the order of a few percent). Since the cross-section of the above reaction increases with n⁴, n being the principal quantum number of Ps, it is essential to generate Ps in a highly excited (Rydberg) state. This will occur by means of two laser excitations of Ps emitted from a nanoporous silica target: a first UV laser (at 205 nm) will bring Ps from the ground to the n=3 state; a second laser pulse (tunable in the range 1650-1700 nm) will further excite Ps to the Rydberg state.

A thermophilic strain of Naegleria clarki, isolated from a pond, has previously been investigated for its peculiarity to host a cytoplasmic symbiont, which causes a loss of the ability to form cysts. This endosymbiont, called Pcb, was itself infected by a phage, and exhibited chlamydia-like features resembling to another symbiont of Naegleria previously described as Protochlamydia naegleriophila. We report in this study, the results of amoeba host range and 16S rDNA molecular phylogeny of this strain, showing that Pcb is a new strain of the Naegleria endosymbiont chlamydial species Protochlamydia naegleriophila (Chlamydiae: Parachlamydiaceae).

Opis:
One of the main errors in the machining accuracy of machine tools is the displacement through thermal induced deformation. Modern design and construction methods aim to optimize the heat flow in the machine to achieve minimum displacement. To enable a further improvement it is essential to know the displacement state of the complete machine structure. However, most measurement methods that are used to capture the influence of a thermal load only measure the displacement of the TCP or individual axes. This paper presents a methodology to capture the complex spatial displacement condition of a state of the art machine tool in one measuring cycle using a multichannel laser interferometer. It describes the development of the measurement model as well as the measurement setup in the workspace of the machine. With measurements according to the presented procedure, it is possible to uncover weak points in the structure of a machine tool and to derive warm-up and cooling strategies.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and essays written by Herta Müller, the most famous Romanian dissident and the recipient of the 2009 Noble Prize in literature. The point of departure for the analysis is the reference to the Romanian regime of Ceaușescu contained in the Historical Notes on The Handmaid’s Tale, which constitute an integral part of Atwood’s novel. Juxtaposing the aforementioned novel with Herta Müller’s essays, the article reveals conspicuous parallels between the actual experience of living under a regime, omnipresent in the texts of the Romanian-born German author, and the dystopian narrative of Offred, the protagonist of The Handmaid’s Tale. The article examines the texts through the lens of the poetics of experience, that is, it treats them as a record of an individual experience which has the power to influence the reader through emphatic involvement.
