    Hayden White and Jacques Rancière used Erich Auerbach’s approach to the history of realistic European literature to construct their own theoretical discussions of historical and literary writing. White thus formulated the concepts of a figural relationship, modernist and figural realism, while Rancière critically commented on the undemocratic historiography of the Annales school and sought egalitarian writings in Western literature. White’s and Rancière’s readings of Auerbach will be used to compare their two theoretical approaches. The purpose of this analysis will be, first, to critically compare some of their contributions, and second, to incorporate Rancière’s claims into the English-language debate on the theory of history. I will try to answer the following question: how in their commentaries on the works of Auerbach White and Rancière defined the relationship between politics and historical and literary writing; how they articulate the politics of historical writing (White) and the politics of literature (Rancière).

    The article is a commentary on the Code of Ethics of the Polish Historical Association published in March 2021. In the first part of the article, we critically discuss the Code using the metaphor of a “besieged fortress” and the categories of hierarchy and truth. In our view, by taking a defensive position, reproducing hierarchical relations within the community of historians and in relation to the public, and by placing the category of truth at the centre of the principles of the discipline, the authors of the Code do not respond to the contemporary challenges facing history. In the second part, we postulate the rebuilding of the Code on the basis of the categories of dialogue, polyphony and democracy, and we propose a number of amendments to its content.

    In the paper I only partially address questions about the social role of history: to what extent can historiography change the world? What are history's inherent practices, knowledge resources, or writing forms that allow it to be an effective instrument of political action? What relationship between historians and their readers can a responsible historical discourse establish? I critically discuss how contemporary English‑language historical theory responds to these questions drawing on the contributions of María Inés La Greca and Kalle Pihlainen. In doing so, I make use of the philosophy of Jacques Rancière and thus attempt to incorporate his ideas into this debate. As a result, I propose some directions for further thinking about the social role of history.

    Hayden White did not directly examine the issue of the independence of history as a discipline of knowledge in his theoretical reflection. He did not ask about the subject of historical studies, the specificity of the methods used in it, the difference between history and other fields, or the economic and social conditions of historical discourse. In this article, I revise White’s writing and reconfigure the extant research using the concept of autonomy. White — primarily in his works from the 1970s and 1980s — devoted much attention to exposing and describing cultural compulsions resulting in historical practices and violating their autonomy. These actions also brought unexpected results. At first, the use of structuralism in these practices, and then poststructuralist concepts of “the death of the author” and textualism, suggested claims that freed historiography from its links with an author’s biography and world-view, and with the social context in which a given work is produced. Using Foucault’s descrip-tion of the order of discourse, in turn, brought the image of a strict rigor of historical discipline, which, however, is not equal to the strong autonomy of history. A stronger delimitation of the field of history appears in his — already in the twenty‑first century — offer to use Michael Oakeshott’s division into the practical past and the historical past. Whilst censuring academic historical writing as sterile and rejected by readers because it fails to answer contemporary existential, social and political questions, White, most likely unintentionally, described the independence of historians’ actions from the demands of the societies to which they belong. According to commentators, his remarks can be a productive inspiration for reflection upon the distinctiveness of the discipline of history.

    The aim of this paper is to partially capture the state of theoretical debate amongst Polish historians on their own discipline in the second half of 20th century. To achieve this we analyse the content of the first twenty five volumes of journal Historyka published in the period when Celina Bobińska was its editor-in-chief (1967–1995). We assume that Historyka – the only journal dedicated to the theory of history and history of historiography – was situated in the centre of exchanges on academic historical practices. We do not treat its content as a reflection of contemporary studies in the theory of history, but as a dominant position in the self-understanding of the discipline competing with other utterances. The paper is a reconstruction of this offer, which is composed of the definitions of subjects of historical studies, descriptions of productive methods, hierarchy of masters of historical writings and their influential books.

    The paper is an analysis of contemporary Polish historical discipline from the standpoint of sociology of knowledge. My goal is to recognize the value ascribed by the contemporary history scholars to the idea of the autonomy of the discipline of history as well as to answer the question of how they understand this notion. The analysis concerns the Forum of Contemporary History Scholars that took place in Warsaw December 2016. The debate was organized to discuss the violations of the boundaries of the discipline by scholars and external actors and offers a rare insight into the way Polish historians understand their own profession. I examine the speeches of its participants with recourse to Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the field of science, particularly his concept of autonomy. My focus is on the forms of heteronomy observed by the participants of the debate. These forms are generated by four main external powers breaching the field: political power, media, education, society. The analysis reveals that all of the participants, regardless of their position in the debate, are strongly attached to the idea of autonomy. It also allows the analyst to describe multiple reconfigurations of the meaning of autonomy that enable an individual scholar to maintain the status of the defender of the discipline independence on the one hand, and on the other to articulate his or her own projection of historical scholarship.

Jej celem jest rozpoznanie wagi przywiązywanej przez polskich współczesnych badaczy historii najnowszej do idei autonomii dyscypliny historii oraz odpowiedź na pytanie, jak rozumieją to pojęcie. Analiza obejmuje wypowiedzi uczestników warszawskiego Forum Badaczy Historii Najnowszej z 10 grudnia 2016 r. Debata, którą zorganizowano, aby omówić naruszenia granic dyscypliny dokonane przez samych badaczy oraz zewnętrznych aktorów, dostarcza wielu głosów oferujących wgląd w rozumienie własnego profesjonalizmu przez polskich historyków. Komentuję je, korzystając z teorii pola Pierre’a Bourdieu, a zwłaszcza pojęcia „autonomii”. Moja uwaga koncentruje się na obserwowanych przez uczestników debaty formach heteronomii, generowanych przez cztery główne siły zewnętrzne przekraczające granice pola: władzę polityczną, media, edukację i społeczeństwo. Analiza wskazuje na silne przywiązanie wszystkich uczestników debaty – bez względu na stanowisko zajmowane w dyskusji – do idei autonomii i pozwala opisać wiele sposobów rekonfiguracji jej rozumienia umożliwiających z jednej strony zachowanie statusu obrońcy niezależności dyscypliny, a z drugiej artykulacje własnej wizji badań historycznych.
