Opis:
The Monastery in Supraśl was founded as an Orthodox one in the late fifteenth century. Initially the monks opposed the Union. The Monastery subordinated to the uniate rules in 1635, it then became one of the most significant Basilian centers in the Republic of Poland. Over time, the Basilians increasingly succumbed to Romanization and Polonization. Consequently, Latin altars (main and side ones), pulpit, confessional, stoup, instrumental organs and Latin devotional articles were installed in the Supraśl Orthodox Monastery. The restitution of the Orthodox Church was preceded by several years of preparation. One of the taken measures was the opening of a school in 1834 in Supraśl that provided education in the spirit of sympathy for Orthodoxy. The changes to the interior of the Orthodox Church in Supraśl involved the decoration of the altar according to the Eastern Greek rite, the removal of the side altars and the prohibition of instrumental music. Due to the preserved iconostasis the church was quickly adapted for the needs to celebrate the liturgy according to the Eastern Greek rite; the choir was created by the students from the local school. In 1828, the Basilians who came from the Latin rite were allowed to return to it. Thirty four monks left the Monastery in Supraśl, and only eight remained. The Basilian resistance against the restitution of the Orthodox Church was the result of their Romanization and Polonization. In contrast, the position taken by the Basilians from Supraśl reflected the attitude of their superior, Nikodem Marcinowski.

Zograf Monastery - Mount Athos - manuscripts - archives
Opis:
The literary treasures of the Holy Monastery of St. George the Zograf (widely known as Zograf Monastery) on Mount Athos, Greece, have attracted the scholarly attention for almost two centuries now. Built back in the X c., the Monastery has been inhabited by Slavic monks, predominantly Bulgarian in origin, for a millennium. Numerous medieval books have been taken by different visitors from the Monastery's Library and “migrated”, mainly to the lands of the former Russian Empire. Despite that, due to the relative difficulties in terms of access, the Library and its manuscripts have neither seen proper cataloguing so far, nor have been studied to a sufficient extent. The present article makes an overview of several topics. First, it sketches the history of cataloguing attempts made for Zograf's Library since XIX c. to contemporary undertakings. Second, it describes the current state of the Library's repertoire, which is by far wider than expected until recently, and the formation of several teams with different fields of research in order to cover the whole range of thousands of hand-written books and documents spanning all over ten centuries. Third, the article traces the stages of the decade lasting (and still continuing) process of digitalization of the Zograf's literary heritage and the attempts of providing its accessibility to the scholars - at least for its most valuable pieces, if not in total.

Szczegółowa inwentaryzacja architektoniczna obiektów, datowanie i rekonstrukcja stanowią przyczynek do szerszych studiów nad urządzeniami i systemami grzewczymi na ziemiach polskich w dobie średniowiecza.
The aim of this article is to present two medieval heating devices located in the historic monastic complexes – the Cistercian monastery in Jędrzejow and the Augustinian hermits’ monastery in Kazimierz quarter in Krakow. Both objects are situate within the existing monastery cellars which in the past served as basement with utility-kitchen function. Detailed architectonic inventory of the objects, their dating and reconstruction are a contribution to thorough studies on heating devices and systems used in Poland during the medieval period.

Opis:
The walls of a late antique–medieval monastic complex at Nekloni (Naqlun) spreading on a plateau at the foot of Gebel al-Naqlun in the southeastern Fayum Oasis bear evidence of damage or destruction by fire. The extent of this conflagration is one issue to be considered: evident clusters of burnt walls are concentrated around the landmark Building A with more dispersed traces of burning to the south and north of it. Another issue is the date of this event, which the present author places closer to the end of the 10th or in the first decades of the 11th century. The monastery burned down at the very heyday of its existence, this prosperity attested by a collection of gold coins as well as pieces of decorated codices recovered from the ruins, giving a date prior to the 11th century. Whatever the reason for this conflagration, it did not put an end to the existence of the monastic community in this area. Soon after that some of the monastery buildings were rebuilt, and others, like the main church, were refurbished and repainted.

In this paper, three Coptic ostraca, which all most probably originate in the Theban area, are edited. The texts are all epistolary in nature. It is probable that all three stem from a monastic environment; ostensibly no. 1 relates to the Epiphanius Monastery, while no. 2 comes from the dossier belonging to the Monastery of Phoibammon. The latter piece concerns an argument about the appointment of a shepherd, thus providing another witness to the economic activities of the mentioned institution. No. 3 concerns a delivery of an unnamed commodity kept in sacks.

Opis:
The article presents the circumstances of founding the monastery of the Canons Regular of Lateran in Kraśnik. The author omitted the data contained in the foundation documents which had already been described in the literature on the subject. The paper focuses on the history of the Tęczyński family, whose founding activity was aimed at marking their position among the elite of medieval Poland - the times of the Tęczyński family's splendour, which followed the periods of crisis, were marked by successive foundations. In this context, the purpose of the monastery in Kraśnik was to emphasize the position of the new branch in the Topór coat of arms - Rabsztyńscy. Attention was also paid to the Tęczyński family’s connections with the Canons Regular formed at the Cracow Academy, where some members of this family studied. Finally, the author presented a mysterious and unexplained case of Jakub Oleśnicki, who, according to an old tradition, was regarded as a brother of the famous Cardinal Zbigniew – a member of the Corpus Christi Monastery in Cracow. If Jakub was indeed related to Cardinal Oleśnicki – though he was not his brother, but rather his nephew – the question of choosing the Canons Regular to run the monastery in Kraśnik would be obvious, as he would be a very close relative of the founder of the monastery, Jan Rabsztyński

Artykuł poświęcono prezentacji reliktu dawnego ogrodu bernardynów w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim. W oparciu o przeanalizowany materiał źródłowy autorka przedstawiła losy ogrodu w kontekście historii klasztoru. Ukazała zasób współczesny dawnego ogrodu bernardynów i określiła stan zachowania historycznego układu.
The article is devoted to the presentation of a relic of the former Bernardine garden in Piotrków Trybunalski. Based on the analyzed source material, the author presented the fate of the garden in the context of the history of the monastery. She showed the contemporary resource of the former Bernardine garden and described the state of preservation of the historical system. This allowed us to reconstruct the evolution of the assumption and draw conclusions about the protection of the garden heritage, and then formulate recommendations for shaping the historical landscape of the center of Piotrków. As a result of the analysis, it was proved that the historical and artistic values of the Piotrków Bernardine complex are large. The history of this complex of greenery, its composition and rank for the contemporary urban layout deserve closer presentation, as was done in the article. The assumption is an interesting example of the evolution of green areas and a testimony of the great influence of religious congregations on shaping the city landscape.

Opis:
From the very beginning of its existence, the Pauline Order paid attention to the need to educate and develop the intellectual life of its members. This resulted from the adoption of St. Augustine’s rule by the community, which in addition to the principles governing the common life also emphasized the intellectual formation of the friars by providing them with access to books. The fulfilment of the obligations resulting from the rule and the subsequent legislation of the convent meant that every Pauline monastery was equipped with a larger or smaller library. It was no different in the case of St. Martin's convent in Oporów, which had existed since 1453 thanks to the foundation of the brothers Piotr and Władysław from the powerful Oporowski family, with the Sulima coat of arms. The monastery library was probably established soon after the foundation of the monastery. It was used primarily by preachers, who prepared Sunday and Christmas sermons, as well as by other monks, if they were authorized to do so. The beginnings of the library are unknown due to the lack of sources from that period. Only the eighteenth-century catalogues of books shed light on the functioning of the library, albeit in a limited period of time 1711-1753. To this day, 13 library inventories have survived, providing welcome information about the intellectual life of the local Pauline monks, titles of books along with the names of the authors and the division of bibliographic material into various thematic categories. The image of the Oporów library is complemented by 47 old prints of Oporów provenience, which are now the property of the University Library in Warsaw. Although their number is insignificant and constitutes only a fraction of the former assets of the library, nevertheless it turns out to be helpful in the analysis of the resources of the Pauline library and the development of intellectual horizons of its users. The analysis of the preserved archival materials is the first attempt to restore the library of the Oporów monastery in the century preceding its irretrievable disappearance in the course of the convent’s annulment.

The oldest book which was on the territory of the early Piast in the second half of the tenth century derived, comes from the Benedictine scriptoria from the area of Bavaria, Saxony, Rhineland and Lorraine and contained the biblical texts and established liturgical canon necessary for the celebration of the Mass. Preserved from the twelfth century regulations of Cistercian chapters which decided that in each monastery there should be: missal, epistolary, Gospel Book, gradual, antiphonary, liber hymnarius, psaltery, lectionary and calendar. These regulations made the copywriter’s work particularly important. The importance attributed to their work is attested to, for example, by their release by the General Chapter of the Order from other duties in favor of the monastery, and by the permission in some cases to work at night. In Cistercian scriptoria apart from copying of the liturgical texts, the memorials so-called libri virorum et mortuorum, there were preparing documents for the current administrative and economic work of the monastery; in addition there were writing yearbooks, obituaries, monastery chronicles or epitaphs poem. There were recording notes of daily life outside the walls of the enclosure, names and functions of friars particularly events that took place away from the monastery or notes about elementary disasters happening in the proximate areas, the damages of monastery caused by floods, fires or epidemics. The preserved manuscript codes are an priceless source for learning the minds, interpersonal relationships prevailing in the small communities, their relations with their nearest surrounding and medieval way of seeing the world.

Following the second partition of Poland, the Benedictine Monastery in Lubiń found itself within part annexed by Prussia. Government guaranty of immunity of Church property turned out to be a farce as early as 1795, while subsequent rulings of Friedrich Wilhelm II led to the ruin of one of the most famous centres of monastic life in the former Republic of Poland. Monastery lands were nationalized, a ban was introduced on the admission of candidates to the novitiate and after a time requisition of the monks' movable property was enforced. The process of suppression was brought to a completion when buildings formerly belonging to the monastery were torn down. Only one apartment was spared where two clergymen were allowed to live. The church of the former Lubiń parish of St. Leonard was handed over to the Evangelical community. Almost half a century passed between the death of the last of the 19th century monks in Lubiń and the return of the Benedictines in 1932. The memory of those events lives in the call that accompanies the Bene- dictine order - ,,Succisa virescit" - the truncated  regenerates.

Zgon gwardiana zapoczątkował proces faktycznej kasaty klasztoru. Po kilku latach (1839 r.) poklasztorne zabudowania przejęła szamotulska parafia katolicka.
The paper discusses the process of the secularisation of the Reformed Franciscan monastery in Szamotuły. The monastery was founded at the end of the 17th century by the then owner of the town Jan Korzbok Łącki. The founder settled the monks in the remains of the former castle and built for them a church dedicated to St. Cross. The convent operated until the death of the last guardian, who died in February 1832. After a few years (1839), the former monastic buildings were taken over by the Catholic parish in Szamotuły.

old Russian chronicle
Opis:
The article is an analysis of the information on anxiety in Poland in the 11th century, as noted down in Russian sources, that in the 12th century chronicle the Tale o f Bygone Years, the Life of Moisej the Hungarian at the Paterik o f Kievan Caves Monastery, a collection of stories from the lives of monks of the Kievan Caves Monstery, whose original version was created in the 13th century. Probably this piece of information was also included in the Life of Antonij Pecerskij, created in the 11th century, however it has not been preserved to our times. It is probable that the common source for the aforementioned items was a tale about the Russian princess Predslava who was kidnapped to Poland in 1018. Those sources claim that the anxiety in Poland arose just after Boleslav I the Brave died, which is mentioned in the Tale o f Bygone Years under 1030. However, the Polish science claims that so called pagan revolution related to social affairs took place at the moment of collapse of the state of Poland. This event dates back to 1036-1037 or 1037-1038. Having analysed the records of the old Russian chronicle and the stories from the lives of monks of the Kievan Caves Monastery it results that transfer of some information from one source to another was very smooth, thus it is sometimes impossible to investigate the origin source.
