Opis:
Winter snow cover in south Spitsbergen is modelled by three main factors: snow precipitation, strong winds which blow out large amounts of snow (locally snow deposition occurs) and winter thaws of short duration. Slight snow melting during thaws causes development of ice-crust layers in a frozen snow cover. The ice-crust protects snow cover from blowing out. Moreover, ice-crust layers are very important in the investigations of snow stratigraphy. In the winter snow cover of 1992/1993, eight layers of ice-crust were observed. The occurrence of atmospheric precipitation is highly associated with the type of atmospheric circulation in the area of south Spitsbergen. In the analysis of statistic relations between circulation and precipitation, circulation typology of Niedźwiedź (1997) was applied. In the period June 1992 - May 1993, as many as 74% of annual solid precipitation was associated with the occurrence of three types of circulation (C-10, C-8 and C-3). The circulations C-4, C-6 and C-1 gave only 4% of annual precipitation. The winter season 1992/1993 is connected with typical meteorological conditions that occur in the south part of Spitsbergen. In the area of Polish Polar Station, four phases of development and degradation of snow cover were distinguished: - intensive blowing out of snow (October - January), - small increase of snow cover thickness (February - March), - considerable increase of snow cover thickness (March - May), - thaws (May, 25th - June, 28th). The thickness of snow cover depended on the altitude and local conditions. Considerable differences were determined in snow thickness at two sites located in small distance from each other (500 m), both close to the seacoast (Fig. 1). Water equivalent of the snow cover at Polish Polar Station (8 m a.s.l.) at the end of winter was only 150 mm, whereas at Fugle site (5 m a.s.l.) it was 2.5 times higher (378 mm). These values were much higher on the glaciers; Hans Glacier in the ELA zone (300 m a.s.l.) - 276 mm and in the accumulation zone (450 m a.s.l.) - 1459 mm; Amundsenisen Plateau (700 m a.s.l.) - 1293 mm.

Opis:
This article outlines the changing role of culture in modern economy. According to European examinations and researches (including the European Commission), culture is one of the biggest and most dynamically developing employers of Europe, supporting increasingly domestic economies, particularly at the regional level. According to many economists, for instance David Throsby (Professor of Economics at Macquarie University in Sydney ), countries, which are not investing in culture at the age of innovative economies cannot function properly. Culture is no longer perceived only in terms of some aesthetic values but is more often regarded as an economical motor. Moreover, the definition of culture applies now to a very broad range of activities, including creative sectors, which are using cultural resources. Culture becomes a web of different sectors. Culture has a direct and indirect impact on economy, especially in the social sphere, it may also strongly affect economic transformations of areas, characterized by low level of general investments. Furthermore, it becomes an object of scientific and economical analyses. Many European countries are demonstrating an interest in the economics and culture, Great Britain or Germany for example – adapting widely culture for economic and social purposes. However this process needs a great deal of support, it is not possible without coherent promotional and educational system, deeply hierarchical model, active participation of non-government organizations, a huge amount of plans and assistance programs dedicated to culture at the local, regional and domestic level, as well as wide non-profit social contribution into the bloom of this increasingly important branch. The idea of profitable culture should be attached to national development strategies. We should create appropriate mechanisms, changing the social attitude towards culture, harnessing informative and educational campaigns raising public awareness of the notion of National Heritage (already at the level of basic education). Long-term programs aiming cultural education are compulsory, within different aspects of its activity. Culture fulfills multiple purposes important for the economy, it stimulates : the labour market, the entrepreneurship of private, public institutions and the society, development of new technologies, tourism, development of professional qualifications (in particular shaping the idea of lifelong learning), other industries. The proportion of well-educated employees in the cultural & creative sector is significant, what was proven in British examinations. Finally, culture allows Poland to apply for a huge financial aid from the EU funds: Culture Programme, European Capital of Culture, Media 2007 Programme, Digital Libraries initiatives, Lifelong Learning Programme or Europe for Citizens project. The role of culture shouldn’t be underestimated at the time of economic chaos in Europe, when governments are deciding on budget cuts. To some extent the article is answering a question, whether the culture should undergo additional funding now, so when the national debts are growing, or it would be illogical.

This paper is devoted to the motif of a spontaneous sex change which appears several times in Phlegon of Tralles’ Mirabilia. The reports quoted by the author concern mythical characters (Teiresias, Kainis), as well as historical (or allegedly historical) figures; all of the reports present a transformation of woman to man, with exception of the myth of Teiresias who underwent a reverse metamorphosis. Each account has been truncated by the author and limited to the mere episode of the sex change; none has been commented or explained. This indicates that the author tries to focus his readers’ attention only on the elements of the marvelous and supernatural in order to astonish them. This fact proves that Mirabilia which are a literary collection of oddities may be regarded as a part of a wider cultural phenomenon − the vogue for collections of various curiosities, so popular in Phlegon’s times.

Opis:
The present article aims to study The Black Goat by Bolesław Leśmian in view of its intertextual dialogue with the antique model of metamorphic literature: Metamorphoses, or The Golden Ass by Apuleius. Although the fairy tale was published in a volume entitled Polish Fairy Tales, it is partially based on foreign sources that the author cleverly hid behind other Polish stories. The comparison of The Black Goat with The Golden Ass shows that the Polish poet drew inspiration mainly from Apuleius’s novel, in which a man is also transformed into a stubborn animal. The symbolism of colours and light, which Leśmian modernized and adapted for the modern Polish reader, confirms this hypothesis. Comparative work on both texts helps to understand Leśmian’s reinterpretation of the concept of metamorphosis and his contribution to the reflection on this topic.

Opis:
In Willows Szymon Szymonowic used a popular in Polish Renaissance and Baroque literature theme of the metamorphosis of the body, making a reference to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and other literary sources. In his bucolic tale he connected metamorphic theme with meta-poetic reflection on fame and immortality of the poet. The key motif of nymphs losing their purity and the punishment of turning them into willows is accompanied by a warning against losing the spirit of poetry, which may result from writing for unworthy crowds. Willows is also an attempt to demonstrate the mythical provenance of Polish bucolic tales. The author included in the conventional world of pastoral scenery his very own, local space by the river of Pur and by doing so he introduced the motif of Polish folk culture into European literary tradition. The relation between the metamorphic motifs and the essence of the bucolic tale genre is therefore disclosed.

The subject matter of the present article is a comparative analysis of two pieces dating back to the turn of the 13th century: a short novel Robert the Devil and a short story Chevalier au barisel. They both belong to the category of the so called “pious stories,” which provided believers with a certain model to follow. What is more, they were a lesson that even the worst sinner may obtain God’s mercy and the grace of salvation. The theme of repentance is an essential narrative and ideological element. The protagonists of the stories in question are: Robert − a knight and Devil’s son; and a knight possessed with the Devil. They both undergo a complete metamorphosis reaching sanctity which results from genuine repentance. Nevertheless, their paths are completely different, as unalike are their initial attitudes towards the possibility of penitence. The theme of metamorphosis in both texts consists of the same elements, which are however put in different narrative order. Two models of Christian metamorphosis emerge from these stories: from devilment to sanctity and from bad life to good death.

Opis:
A literary text can become space for transformation of the reader. In some cases, through the impact of content and a specific form, reading becomes not only an intellectual experience based on the interpretation of the already read text, but the very act of reading is understood as an act of metamorphosis. In the article two Croatian literary works are discussed: a pastoral novel by Petar Zoranić written in the 16th century and lacrimae, an epic poem by Ivan Gundulić dating back to the 17th century. Both pieces are characterized by the use of genre conventions to show and cause the transformation of an individual. In the novel, the character experiences transformation from a young man overwhelmed by love fever into a conscious citizen-Patriot. In the epic poem, a sinner is affected by the act of repentance and tries to return to the path of God’s grace. Reading the text can become an act of transformation thanks to the use of narrative, which is conceived as a way to organize experience by a subject who identifies the literary hero’s metamorphosis with his/her own transformation in real time.

The paper is devoted to the problem of the (Judeo-)Christian (biblical) tradition functioning in (post-)modern culture from the perspective of the history of ideas. The starting point is the metamorphosis of both the Bible as a text and apocrypha as its creative (re)interpretation. The objects of interest are literary paraphrases of the Evangelic story about Judas as a figure of the fallen man. In order to reveal the fundamental ideological changes of (post-)modernity there are presented functionalizations of the greatest sinner in modern Bulgarian apocrypha. It is shown that authors’ metamorphosis of Judas have made him a significant figure of the (post-)modern man. Therefore, the (post-)modern metamorphosis of the (Bulgarian) apocrypha about the God’s traitor on the one hand show the effects of the collapse of the Enlightenment project of human emancipation, and thus testify to the process of the man’s sliding into the tragic immanence, on the other − they reveal − according to Charles Taylor, Agata Bielik-Robson and Philip Rieff − the sense-making potential of para-phrase as a poetic repetition.

Metamorfozy (Metamorphoses) by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and Zygmunt Ławicz i jego koledzy (Zygmunt Ławicz and His Friends) by Eliza Orzeszkowa are treated here as two original works bearing the imprint of two separate creative personalities, although they are based on a similar creative idea and despite the fact that the structure of Orzeszkowa’s novel recalls Kraszewski’s artistic solutions. Both works are similar in content. Using similar metaphors, they attempt to portray metamorphoses in a group of young friends, which are to symbolize more than the passage of time and effects of biological and social laws − both are to express the experience of political bondage. They differ, however, in artistic solutions, which make Metamorphoses, a work based on a myth, a comforting story about the order of human existence; whereas in case of Orzeszkowa’s work they allow us to define it as a novel about dying out, a pessimistic diagnosis of social and political conditions.

Opis:
In the mid-nineteenth century a Czech writer and folklorist, Karel Jaromı´r Erben, publishes a collection under the title Bouquet, which consists of thirteen ballads inspired by oral folk literature. The leading theme of the collection is the metamorphosis of the dead into the living, which is derived from the primordial conceptions about monistic nature of all phenomena. Erben presents various options for reviving the dead: a metamorphosis into a vampire, a tree, a flower, a bird, and rebirth in a physical form before death. In each case, the metamorphosis involves the action of the elements of nature, which are a tool of moral instruction in the ballads. Reviving the dead is a consequence or a cause of sin, which is the exposure of human life in the name of selfish motives. Erben identifies selfishness with the betrayal of the family. From this point of view, the metamorphosis of the dead into the living reminds us of the value of human life, which is confirmed in family life conducted in accordance with Christian precepts. Erben allegorically extends this Biedermeier message, expressing faith in the rebirth of the Czech nation, which has been politically buried by the Habsburg regime.

Opis:
The paper touches upon the transformation described in Nowy cud w podgórskich krajach (A new wonder in the piedmont regions), a poem by Wacław Potocki, a 17th century poet: a roe deer turns into a wolf during the hunt on St. Martin’s Day (November 11). In traditional agrarian culture, it was the time of abundance, gluttony and fun − the autumn carnival, when such a transformation can be explained by the laws of the world upside down. In the poem, this has been juxtaposed with the metamorphosis of women into she-wolves. The Latin word lupa (‘a she-wolf’), meaning ‘a prostitute’, refers to the nature of women and their power to transform town houses into lupanars; this metamorphosis is so curious, as it happens permanently, outside the period of carnival licentiousness. It is related to the concept, embraced by Potocki, of the degeneration of the world, in which women’s extraordinary sexual appetites lead to a humiliating metamorphosis of men into deer.
