This paper is devoted to the motif of a spontaneous sex change which appears several times in Phlegon of Tralles’ Mirabilia. The reports quoted by the author concern mythical characters (Teiresias, Kainis), as well as historical (or allegedly historical) figures; all of the reports present a transformation of woman to man, with exception of the myth of Teiresias who underwent a reverse metamorphosis. Each account has been truncated by the author and limited to the mere episode of the sex change; none has been commented or explained. This indicates that the author tries to focus his readers’ attention only on the elements of the marvelous and supernatural in order to astonish them. This fact proves that Mirabilia which are a literary collection of oddities may be regarded as a part of a wider cultural phenomenon − the vogue for collections of various curiosities, so popular in Phlegon’s times.

Opis:
The present article aims to study The Black Goat by Bolesław Leśmian in view of its intertextual dialogue with the antique model of metamorphic literature: Metamorphoses, or The Golden Ass by Apuleius. Although the fairy tale was published in a volume entitled Polish Fairy Tales, it is partially based on foreign sources that the author cleverly hid behind other Polish stories. The comparison of The Black Goat with The Golden Ass shows that the Polish poet drew inspiration mainly from Apuleius’s novel, in which a man is also transformed into a stubborn animal. The symbolism of colours and light, which Leśmian modernized and adapted for the modern Polish reader, confirms this hypothesis. Comparative work on both texts helps to understand Leśmian’s reinterpretation of the concept of metamorphosis and his contribution to the reflection on this topic.

In the studies on poetry by Joan Brossa, his literary inspirations from the French tradition are indicated, but his connection with Spanish-language literature is almost nonexistent. The purpose of this article is to present Brossa’s testimonies about his Federico García Lorca readings and to compare his “Sonet del pur estrèpit” (1949) with Lorca’s “Muerte” (1931). Both poems show textual and conceptual similarities and share the theme of metamorphosis, so we propose their analysis to look for possible inspirations in different philosophical and aesthetic traditions (surrealism, Ovid, Darwin, Zen Buddhism).

Opis:
In Willows Szymon Szymonowic used a popular in Polish Renaissance and Baroque literature theme of the metamorphosis of the body, making a reference to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and other literary sources. In his bucolic tale he connected metamorphic theme with meta-poetic reflection on fame and immortality of the poet. The key motif of nymphs losing their purity and the punishment of turning them into willows is accompanied by a warning against losing the spirit of poetry, which may result from writing for unworthy crowds. Willows is also an attempt to demonstrate the mythical provenance of Polish bucolic tales. The author included in the conventional world of pastoral scenery his very own, local space by the river of Pur and by doing so he introduced the motif of Polish folk culture into European literary tradition. The relation between the metamorphic motifs and the essence of the bucolic tale genre is therefore disclosed.

Szkic stanowi próbę przedstawienia ewolucji obrazu Boga w poezji Zbigniewa Jankowskiego. W toku metamorfoz wizerunku Stwórcy daje się wyodrębnić trzy etapy: fazę Boga o kamiennym wnętrzu (prezentowaną w utworach z lat 1959–1966), fazę Boga wszelkich możliwości, wzlotów i upadków (prezentowaną w utworach z lat 1970–2000) oraz fazę Boga wiekuistego (prezentowaną w utworach z lat 2001–2014). W pierwszej części rozważań Bóg o kamiennym wnętrzu przedstawione zostały odczytania utworów pochodzących z czterech pierwszych tomów poetyckich, w których Bóg jawi się podmiotowi lirycznemu jako słaby, bezwzględny demiurg, twórca ludzkiego cierpienia. Kolejny fragment pracy Bóg wszelkich możliwości, wzlotów i upadków zawiera interpretacje wybranych wierszy z lat 1970–2000, w których wizerunek Boga ulega metamorfozie – podmiot liryczny postrzega Stwórcę jako miłosiernego ojca i wszechobecne uosobienie miłości. Natomiast ostatnia część opracowania Bóg wiekuisty, przywołując utwory z lat 2001–2014, pokazuje, że Najwyższy stał się synonimem wieczności, z którą scalenia pragnie podmiot liryczny. Całość wywodu została opatrzona dotyczącymi wiary i Boga wyznaniami Z. Jankowskiego znajdującymi się w jego autobiograficznych tekstach, które wzbogacają eksplikację o kontekst biograficzny. Paralela rozwoju obrazu Boga zarówno w poezji jak i prozie Jankowskiego pozwala wysnuć wniosek o integralności podmiotu lirycznego i narratora.
This essay constitutes an attempt to show the evolution of the image of God in Zbigniew Jankowski’s poetry. One can identify three stages in the metamorphosis of the Creator’s image: the rock-solid God phase (presented in poems in the 1959–1966 period), the almighty God of ups and downs phase (presented in poems in the 1970–2000 period) and the eternal God phase (presented in poems in the 2001–2014 period). The initial section, The Rock-solid God, concentrates on poems from the first four poetry volumes, in which the God presents Himself to the lyrical I as a weak, ruthless demiurge, the creator of human suffering. The next part, The Almighty God of ups and downs, contains interpretations of selected poems created in the 1970–2000 period. In those poems the image of God has undergone a metamorphosis – the lyrical I perceives the Creator as a merciful father and an omnipresent personification of love. The last part, The Eternal God, based on the poems created in the 2001–2014 period, shows that the Sovereign has become synonymous with the eternity, which the lyrical I craves to be united with. The whole study has been complemented with the comments on faith and God made by the author himself in his autobiographical texts, which adds the biographical context to the explication. The parallel of the evolution of God’s image in both Jankowski’s poetry and prose may lead one to a conclusion that the lyrical I and the narrator are integrated.

“GENRE MEMORY” AND ITS METAMORPHOSIS IN A LITERARY TALE BY A.A. MILNEThe nucleus of Milne’s literary tale dilogy (Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at the Pooh Corner) is an archaic folklore-mythological spatio-temporal structure and its specific subject realization that have proved capable of development, metamorphosis, synthesis with other deep structures and have led to the formation of literary genres of a neo-mythological character – literary tale, story and fantasy.In Milne’s tales there is no traditional struggle between Good and Evil, there are practically no “miraculous” objects and magical powers. The action is not based on the confrontation between the two sides, representing different moral principles (as in a traditional fairy tale), but involves the transition of the hero, Christopher Robin, from the world of childhood to the adult world, acquiring a higher social status, the development of abilities and skills of various characters to solve different life problems, first at the level of choice of options from the accumulated empirical experience, and then at the level of abstraction from real specifics to the skills of logical analysis and mastering written speech and the basics of mathematics. This results in the acquisition of a new level of knowledge and the development of a new way of understanding of the world (the creation of the cosmos from chaos).

Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy „morfologicznej” fabuł nowel Kołasa rozpatrywany jest problem autorskiego wznowienia baśniowych archetypów fabularnych w wątku literackim, „zanik” warunkowy w nim stereotypu strukturalnego baśni ludowej oraz narodziny fenomenu rodzajowego – „baśni życia”.
The article is dedicated to the study of plot-construction in allegoric novels of the cycle “Life’s Fairy Tales” by Yakub Kolas. Certain inner modifications and creative transformations of archetype plot “formulae” (mythological, folklore) as the result of breaking by the “life’s fairy tales” of the plot of its structural proto-bases, which is seen in the folklore fairy tale plot, are examined in the article. On the basis of the “morphological” analysis of the plots of the novels written by Kolas the issue is regarded about the authorial renewal of fairy tales’ archetypes in a literary plot, the conditional “death” of the structural fairy tale stereotype in this plot and the birth of the genre phenomenon of a “life’s fairy tale”.

Animal metamorphosis was a traditional component of witchcraft beliefs during the European early modern witch-hunts, during which it was taken for granted that witches could and did turn into animals regularly in order to easier do evil. It must be noted, however, that the witch-turned-animal motif was much less common in England, where witches did possess the shape-shifting abilities but relatively rarely used them. A likely reason for the difference, explored in the present paper, was the specifically English belief that most witches were accompanied and served by familiar spirits, petty demons that customarily assumed the shape of animals. It seems that the ubiquity of such demonic shape-shifters effectively satisfied the demand for magical transformations in the English witchcraft lore.

Aim: The interwar period in Czechoslovakia was a time of societal anxiety. The aim of this paper is to find the central themes of societal fear, as reflected in the surrealist works of Vítězslav Nezval, a czech poet. The analysis will be based primarily on the lyric poetry from the collections: Žena v množném čísle [Woman in Plural] (1936) and Absolutní hrobař [Absolute Gravedigger] (1937). Methods: The analysis is based on the Josef Vojdovík’s anthropo-phenomenological method of exploring the surrealist perceptions of the body, which is based on vertical and horizontal anthropological dimensions and phenomenological conceptions of fears. Results: Surrealist poetry and other literary works contain images of the body that are changed by fear: deformations, metamorphoses, fragmentarisations, hybridisations, expressing the body as a collage, a mosaic, an amalgam, a phantom, a grotesque, an inlay, and as lifelessness. It undergoes multiple metamorphoses, not only within its own form, but also with regard to the categories of life and lifelessness. Conclusions: The analysis leads to the conclusion, that V. Nezval’s works show a clear tendency to portray the body as an object which undergoes a metamorphosis. The body is balanced on the edge between living and dead, organic and inorganic, it is determined by time and space. It is often shown along the narrowing-widening relation, in stupor, petrification, reduced to a flat surface or miniaturised.

In this paper, an interweaving of the concepts of metamorphosis, developed by Ulrich Beck, and the scientific thinking style of Ludwik Fleck is suggested. Due to our own relevant preliminary work, it seems obvious to bring these two concepts together for the purpose of a theoretical connection useful for linguistics, especially for discourse linguistics. After a short introduction (1) and a review of the state of research on Fleck’s theory of cognition (2), the core term “metamorphosis” is semantically determined (3), and comments are made on the relevance of the concept. This is followed by an analysis of Beck’s The Metamorphosis of the World, which focuses on the concept of metamorphosis as he sees it (4). Here, the linguistic relevance of the concept is emphasized, which Beck mentions explicitly. This is followed by a section on Ludwik Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact (5.). Here, comments are made on Fleck’s thinking style and on the thinking collective. On this basis, the synthesis of Beck’s and Fleck’s ideas is sought (6.), a directed perception with a view to social metamorphoses. This can best be done linguistically using the discourse-linguistic multi-layer analysis (DIMEAN), as proposed by Spitzmüller/Warnke. DIMEAN is presented accordingly, and subsequently modified for the analysis of linguistic manifestations of metamorphosis (6.1). Using the example of various linguistic metamorphosis phenomena from the discourse around the German federal elections of 2017–2018, the applicability of the combination of Beck’s and Fleck’s ideas is then tested (6.2). The article concludes with a summary and perspectives for further research (7).

Opis:
The main intention of my text is to describe the specific of the somatic turn of cultural studies and, to follow Chris Barker’s proposition, “the desire to understand the ways in which the body becomes the object of shaping and disciplining by social and cultural forces – i.e. how the body acquires meaning in contemporary culture”. The above problem provokes the consideration of the mutual relationships between the culture of late modernity and the category of identity (especially the body in the process of identity construction). The goal outlined in this way aims to present contexts and space for the manifestation of the issues of the body in contemporary culture, The aim of the proposed deliberations is to present the problem of the body from the perspective of reflexive identity (A. Giddens), constructivism perspective (Z. Melosik, A. Gromkowska, M. Bogunia-Borowska), in selected therapeutic systems (J. Kabat-Zinn, A. Lowen, S.&C. Block) and in the final section I present the category of the body in the integral approach to development (K. Wilber). Also, I shortly summarize my analysis and I point to the dangers of the presented approaches especially in the dominant instant culture practices.

Opis:
Ever since antiquities, theatre has been a medium of provoking sentimental reaction and an entertainment of the populace especially the elite. Authors of this genre do present active noble characters in their works making as if it is real. We do learn in Greco-Roman Empire how amphitheatre hosted Caesars, their officials and empiric subjects watching the gladiators and the persecuted Christians in the medieval era. Fifty years of cinema and the television as well as the new media have changed the mind-set of the global community towards life in general to form a unique interconnected universal cultural chains. In this research, we would like to use political activism theories called pluralist theories of Norris Pippa as critical lens to analyse the trend of political activism in the modern theatre of the early 21st century in comparison to that of the 20th century which led to violent revolutionary movements.
