Municipal refuse may increase heavy metal concentration in soil, even at low levels, and their resulting long-term cumulative health effects are among the leading health concerns all over the world. In this study, we investigated the concentration of heavy metals in soils and edible plant leaves grown in an abandoned dumpsite along Akachi road in Owerri municipality. The soil samples were collected at each plot using a soil auger at the depth of 0-10 cm. Leaves of dominant edible plant species were selected and collected from each sample plot. The samples were dried in an oven with forced air at 40 °C, milled to fine powder then digested with 10 ml concentrated HNO3 and 5 ml concentrated HClO4 and were analyzed for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Al, and Zn, using an H183200 MultiParameter Bench Photometer. Result showed that metals in in the sampled soils included (in order of quantity) Cr: 150-280 >Fe: 116.50-203 >Cu: 12.4-18.8 >Mn: 0-20 >Al: 0.08-0.16 >Zn: 0-1.4 mg kg-1 Dw. Moreover, levels of metals in the edible plant leaves are in the order of: Zn>Fe>Cu>Al>Mn>Cr. Zn, in particular, was higher than FAO/WHO recommended limits. Still, application of Pollution Load Index and Ecological risk models showed that the area is unpolluted and safe for use. Daily Metal Intake estimates indicated that zinc is mostly consumed from the plant species. The trends in Transfer Factor for the heavy metal in vegetable samples studied were in order: Zn>Al>Cu>Mn>Fe>Cr. Therefore, abandoned solid waste dumpsites contained significant concentrations of heavy metals which are later absorbed and accumulated by plants growing it.

Opis:
The safety and security of different foodstuffs are considered important and have a high priority in global sustainable development. The contents of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb and Cd were estimated in edible parts of 60 vegetable samples, irrigation water and agricultural soil collected from 5 farms in suburban areas around Riyadh district, Saudi Arabia. Also, soil pollution indices, pollution load index and contamination factor (PLI, CF), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices (HQ, THQ, and ILCR) were estimated. The content of heavy metals in irrigation water and soil was within the recommended permissible levels, except for Cd in soil, which exceeds permissible levels. The trend of metal concentrations in both agricultural soil and vegetables was found in the order: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. Cluster analysis of the metal content in vegetables showed a tendency towards the accumulation of heavy metals in the order of leaves > roots > fruits > flowers > tuber. The BAFs values found were < 1.0, HQs values for Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Ni were found to be < 1, while the estimated HQs for Pb and Cd were > 1, posing greater risk to the health of adults and children. THQ values were higher for children compared to adults. ILCR values for Cd showed a serious issue, as it exceeds the threshold risk limit (>10−4) in all parts of the investigated vegetables in all sampling sites.

Introduction. Nowadays, herbalism seems to arouse much interest. Approximately 80% of the world’s population are willingly take plant-derived drugs. It should be remembered that both herbs and their products may have not only beneficial but also harmful components. Moreover, medicinal plants frequently exhibit the capacity to selectively accumulate toxic elements. Objective. To assess the potential burden of phytotherapy with medicinal plants used in chosen herbal mixtures. Materials and method. A total of 76 species of medicinal plants from all over Poland and contained in herbal mixtures applied in selected diseases were investigated with respect to the content of heavy metals. Argon plasma atomic emission spectrometry (AES) was applied, using an ICP-ULTIMA spectrometer. Results. The study plants showed various cumulative properties, depending on plant species and the effect of environmental purity on the metal content in raw materials. Daily doses of metal absorption due to phytotherapy in various diseases were determined. The levels of Ni, Co and Cr accumulation were similar to that of Pb. Conclusions. Herbal therapies using the medicinal plants studied did not exceed daily norms of the investigated metals. However, as these metals may also occur in other food products, a prolonged use of plant-derived drugs can be an additional burden, especially in the case of renal failure.
