    This article discusses briefly the character of Merlin created by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his early twelfth-century poem Vita Merlini and draws analogies between Merlin’s figure in the poem and earlier, mainly Welsh, sources, as well as the thirteenth-century French literature. Following Merlin’s character development and the major motifs connected with his figure across medieval texts the article tries to establish the place Vita Merlini occupies among other medieval texts dealing with Merlin’s character.

    The aim of the study was to determine the biomass and nitrogen accumulation in early maturing soybean plants experiencing contrasting weather conditions. Soybean (Glycine max) is a species of agricultural crop plant that is widely described in scientific publications. During 2014–2016, a field experiment with early maturing soybean ‘Merlin’ was carried out at Grodziec Śląski, Poland (49°48'01" N, 18°52'04" E). Results showed that the morphological traits of the plants, the yield of individual plants, and the soybean crop were all closely related to the climatic conditions. A high amount of precipitation stimulated seed development, resulting in a high production potential. The harvest index calculated for soybean ‘Merlin’ was high and exceeded 0.5 g g−1. The nitrogen content of the aboveground biomass increased during ontogenesis. The maximum yield of dry matter was noted at the green maturity phase, which subsequently decreased at the full maturity phase because of the loss of the leaf fraction. The variation in the effectiveness of nitrogen accumulation in seeds between 2015 and 2016 was 30%. The nitrogen harvest index values were high in each year of the experiment and exceeded 0.92 g−1. For the production of 1 ton of seeds with an adequate amount of soybean straw, plants needed, on average, 68 kg of nitrogen.
    Celem badań było określenie akumulacji biomasy i azotu we wcześnie dojrzewającej odmianie soi [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] w zmiennych warunkach pogodowych. W latach 2014–2016 w Grodźcu Śląskim (49°48'01" N, 18°52'04" E) przeprowadzono eksperyment polowy z wcześnie dojrzewającą odmianą soi ‘Merlin’. Wykazano, że cechy morfologiczne roślin soi oraz plonowanie były ściśle związane z warunkami klimatycznymi. Wysoka ilość opadów stymulowała rozwój nasion, dając w rezultacie wysoki potencjał produkcyjny. Indeks żniwny (HI) obliczony dla odmiany ‘Merlin’ był wysoki i przekraczał 0.5 g g−1. Zawartość azotu w nadziemnej biomasie wzrastała wraz z rozwojem generatywnym roślin. Maksymalną wydajność suchej masy odnotowano w początkowej fazie dojrzewania. W fazie pełnej dojrzałości wydajność suchej masy spadła, z powodu utraty frakcji liści. Zróżnicowanie w efektywności akumulacji azotu w nasionach w latach 2015–2016 wyniosło 30%. Wartości indeksu żniwnego azotu (NHI) były wysokie w każdym roku doświadczenia i przekraczały 0.92 g g−1. Do produkcji 1 tony nasion z odpowiednią ilością słomy rośliny potrzebowały średnio 68 kg azotu.

    Recent scholarly debates in Europe have become preoccupied with the effects of increased ethnic diversity on social relations, trust and social participation. It has been widely investigated, if and how ethnic diversity impacts the quality of urban and neighbourhood contacts between people of different origins. Particularly, the question whether the increase in ethnic diversification leads to ‘hunkering down’ of social capital (Putnam 2007) or ‘erodes’ trust (Stolle, Soroka, Johnston 2008) could be regarded as a starting point of a dynamic academic discussion in many European countries on so called ‘diversity effects’ at the neighbourhood or local community levels. Here, Merlin Schaeffer’s book Ethnic Diversity and Social Cohesion. Immigration, Ethnic Fractionalization and Potentials for Civic Action arrives as a comprehensive review of to-date debates and methods, it also brings diverse, often contradictory arguments together, and points to new research directions.

    A radio labeling f of G is an assignment of positive integers to the vertices of G satisfying, │f (u) – f (v)│≥ diam(G) + 1 - d (u ,v) ∀ u, v ∈ V (G) where d (u ,v) is the distance between any two vertices in the graph. The radio number denoted by rn (G) is the minimum span of a radio labeling for G. In this paper, an alternate proof for radio number of cycles and exact radio number for their total graphs has been discussed.

    In the thesis, an example of using an Instron 5544 – a tensile testing machine for programmable fatigue research of composite material designed for ski jumping suits is described. A few basic parameters were considered in the research, such as the duty cycle of the composite under exploitation conditions, the duration of individual stages of loads, and mechanical properties of the material obtained as a result of static testing. These parameters were used to program the cycle of research on the Instron 5544 model, a tensile testing machine controlled with a computer and equipped with Merlin Test Profiler software.
    W pracy opisano przykład wykorzystania maszyny wytrzymałościowej Instron 5544 do programowalnych badań zmęczeniowych laminatu przeznaczonego na stroje skoczków narciarskich. W badaniach uwzględniono kilka podstawowych parametrów, takich jak: cykl pracy kompozytu w warunkach użytkowania, czas trwania poszczególnych faz obciążeń i właściwości mechaniczne materiału w badaniach statycznych. Przyjęte parametry posłużyły do zaprogramowania cyklu badań na maszynie wytrzymałościowej Instron model 5544 sterowanej komputerem wyposażonym w środowisko Merlin Test Profiler.

    Introduction: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors developing from the myelin-producing Schwann cells, which surround the vestibular branches of the auditory nerve. The vast majority occur sporadically and a small proportion are associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). Most sVS are slow-growing neoplasms; however some have a cystic structure, show more rapid growth, cause more frequently paralysis of the facial nerve, and brainstem compression. The molecular hallmark of both sporadic and NF-2 associated VS is the inactivation of the tumor-suppressor gene NF2, also called merlin gene. Purpose: The paper presents the current knowledge on the molecular biology of VS, including: information on genetic and epigenetic aberrations, changes in gene expression and specific microRNA expression profiles.

    Wychodząc od zdeterminowanych medium przeobrażeń tematów średniowiecznych w adaptacjach operowych na poziomie tekstu, muzyki i treści autor artykułu dokonuje - w odniesieniu do wieku XIX i XX - przeglądu oper, w których polscy kompozytorzy podejmują tematy z okresu średniowiecza. Druga część artykułu podejmuje analizę recepcji motywu Króla Artura w operze radiowej G. Bacewicz i w muzyce teatralnej Z. Krauze. Oboje kompozytorzy wywodzą się z innych tradycji muzycznych i różnie odnoszą się do tematu. W operze G. Bacewicz można odnaleźć wskazówki na poziomie treści odnoszące się do adaptacji materiału w formie komedii. Natomiast w muzyce teatralnej Krauzego do sztuki Merlin Tankreda Dorsta chodzi o nakreślenie charakterów postaci.
    Based on some thoughts to the medial changes of a medieval subjects in an opera regard to textual, musical and content aspects, this paper gives an overview of operas in which Polish composers of the 19th and 20th centuries shape figures and themes from the Middle Ages.The second part of the paper summaries the reception of the Arthurian theme in the radio opera by G. Bacewicz and the theatre music by Z. Krauze. Both composers belong to different musical traditions and process the subjects differently. For the opera by Bacewicz are given some remarks to references to the content that describe the transformation of the subject into a comedy. In the theatre music to “Merlin” by Krauze, the paper focuses in the drawing of the figure in text by T. Dorst.
    Ausgehend von Überlegungen zu den medial bedingten Veränderungen eines mittelalterlichen Stoffes bei einer Opernbearbeitung hinsichtlich textlicher, musikalischer und inhaltlicher Aspekte wird eine Übersicht von Opern gegeben, in denen polnische Komponisten des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts sich mit Figuren und Themen aus dem Mittelalter beschäftigten.Im zweiten Teil des Artikels wird die Rezeption des Artus-Stoffes in der Radiooper von G. Bacewicz und der Theatermusik von Z. Krauze skizziert. Beide Komponisten stehen in unterschiedlichen musikalischen Traditionen und verarbeiten den Stoff verschieden. Für die Oper von Bacewicz werden inhaltliche Hinweise gegeben, die die Verwandlung des Stoffes in eine Komödie beschrieben. Bei der Theatermusik zu „Merlin“ von Krauze konzentriert sich die Darstellung auf die Figurenzeichnung hinsichtlich des Textes von T. Dorst.

Przedstawiono także ocenę możliwości bojowych grupy uderzeniowej Royal Navy.
