Opis:
The article deals with the analysis of the split of mercury present in raw coals between commercial products and wastes in 21 Polish collieries producing hard steam coal (Upper Silesia Coal Basin). The coal cleaning constitutes the first step in the reduction of mercury emissions in coal utilisation (mainly combustion) processes by decreasing the charge of mercury in the commercial products in comparison to the raw coal. The ratio of this reduction depends, first of all, on the technological characteristics of raw coal, as well as on the range of the applied coal cleaning method. The charges of mercury in exploited raw coals are split in coal preparation processes (mainly coal cleaning processes) between commercial products and waste products. The mercury content in commercial products has been analysed together with the emissions from coal combustion processes. In the second case, tools for the reduction of emissions have already been employed. Characteristics of waste products, in particular the mercury content, have been under consideration to a less extent so far. Data presented in the article allows for better, broadened with the waste products, analyses, understanding and assessment of all environmental mercury originated risks, arising from coal production, including coal cleaning. Presented data generate also the need for discussion of such terms like: “mercury reduction in commercial coal products” and “mercury emissions reduction”, as the result of coal cleaning processes.

Artykuł traktuje o problemach związanych z emisją rtęci do środowiska w procesach użytkowania węgla kamiennego.
The paper concerns the issues associated with the mercury emissions to the environment during hard coal utilization processes. The basic reason for undertaking the topic of mercury in coal and for writing the paper was the disproportion between the statistical data on the amounts of utilized coal and the mercury emissions in the USA and Poland. The authors point out the divergence between published statistical data on mercury emissions in Poland. The divergence, possibly, results from the lack of reliable data concerning the mercury content in utilized coal. The literature review shows, that the mean mercury content in hard coals, exploited in Poland, can be assessed from 70 to 350 ppb. Such data divergences on the mercury content in Polish hard coals can not constitute the basis for reliable assessments of the quantity of mercury emitted to the air due to coal utilization. Additional difficulties have been arising from the lack of knowledge on the mercury distribution in raw coal and from only partial steam coal cleaning in Poland. There is also the lack of detailed knowledge concerning the behavior of mercury during the clearing of Polish hard coals. Additionally, the impacts of mercury bearing mining, coal preparation and power industry wastes, are poorly recognized.

Objectives Gold miners use mercury to extract gold from ore adding liquid mercury to the milled gold-containing ore. This results in a mercury-gold compound, called amalgam. Miners smelt this amalgam to obtain gold, vaporizing it and finally inhaling the toxic mercury fumes. The objective was to merge and analyze data from different projects, to identify typical signs and symptoms of chronic inorganic mercury exposure. Material and Methods Miners and community members from various artisanal small-scale gold mining areas had been examined (Philippines, Mongolia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Indonesia). Data of several health assessments were pooled. Urine, blood and hair samples were analyzed for mercury (N = 1252). Questionnaires, standardized medical examinations and neuropsychological tests were used. Participants were grouped into: Controls (N = 209), living in an exposed area (N = 408), working with mercury as panners (N = 181), working with mercury as amalgam burners (N = 454). Chi2 test, linear trend test, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rho, and analysis of variance tests were used. An algorithm was used to define participants with chronic mercury intoxication. Results Mean mercury concentrations in all exposed subgroups were elevated and above threshold limits, with amalgam burners showing highest levels. Typical symptoms of chronic metallic mercury intoxication were tremor, ataxia, coordination problems, excessive salivation and metallic taste. Participants from the exposed groups showed poorer results in different neuropsychological tests in comparison to the control group. Fifty-four percent of the high-exposed group (amalgam burners) were diagnosed as being mercury-intoxicated, compared to 0% within the control group (Chi2 p < 0.001). Conclusions Chronic mercury intoxication, with tremor, ataxia and other neurological symptoms together with a raised body burden of mercury was clinically diagnosed in exposed people in artisanal small-scale mining areas. The mercury exposure needs to be urgently reduced. Health care systems need to be prepared for this emerging problem of chronic mercury intoxication among exposed people. Coal consumption secures more than 50% of needs of Polish economy for primary energy carriers and the consumption of hard coal alone amounts 70-80 million Mg annually. Almost 14% of hard coal consumption - up to 11 million Mg per year - fall to households in Poland. Coal combustion in domestic furnaces and boilers is regarded as the main source of emissions into the atmosphere, referred to as the low-stack emission. The matter of the paper is the assessment of the emission of mercury from the households sector as the result of coal combustion. The results of the assessment were collated with GUS data on mercury emission from this sector. A change in the annual emission of mercury from the household sector has been proposed and justified, assuming that the whole low-stack emission of mercury is the result of coal combustion only.

When we purchase an automobile, we are also acquiring an amorphous but very real image, that is, the statement which the automobile makes about its owner to the public. Such images are forged in popular culture, and Mercury is an automobile brand that had an auspicious post-WWII popular culture debut. In 1948, K.C. Douglas recorded “Mercury Boogie” on a 10-inch 78-RPM, with its memorable line in the chorus “I’m crazy ‘bout a Mercury.” Five years later in 1953, George and Sam Barris transformed a 1951 Mercury Club Coupe into the Hirohata Merc, creating a classic of customization that has been described as “the most famous custom of all time” (Taylor 2006: 56). Ford occasionally attempted to take advantage of these strong roots in popular culture formed in the make’s earliest days, but the company’s efforts were not notably successful. In spite of Mercury’s promising beginnings in media, it has had only a slight presence in music and film. Opis:
The determination of the composition of gas mixtures, especially those analytes which exist, for example, as contaminants for the main components of the gas mixture, very often requires the concentration of the analyte so that it can be quantified. The analysis of gaseous environmental samples, including air and air samples at workplaces, is difficult, which results from: the need to work with samples with an extensive matrix and heterogeneous distribution of pollutants, the stability of the analyte and the presence of interfering substances (interferents) in the sample. On the other hand, the analysis of trace components of gaseous fuels is difficult due to the need to collect a suitably concentrated sample so that these components can be quantified. This article provides an overview and analysis of the methods used for the collection and determination of mercury in gas mixtures. Currently, there are standardized mercury collection and determination methodologies dedicated to matrices such as air, workplace air, waste gases or natural gas. These are both manual and fully automated methods. Most of the methods described in the literature on the subject consist of two stages, i.e. the stage of collecting a sample for a solid or liquid sorbent and the stage of desorption and determination of the mercury content in the collected sample using methods dedicated to the analysis of this element. The most frequently used methods for collecting mercury samples in gas mixtures are: the gold amalgamation method and the sorption methods on powder sorbents (such as activated carbon, hopcalite, impregnated silica gel), glass fibers, impregnated cellulose filters and liquid sorbents (such as e.g. acids). The methods of sample desorption are varied and depend on the material on which the analyte has been absorbed and the selected mercury determination method. Three methods are mainly used to analyze samples for mercury content, i.e. the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry method (CV-AAS), the cold vapor fluorescence atomic spectrometry method (CV-AFS) and the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method (ICP-MS). However, it should be kept in mind that although the methods available and used for the analysis of mercury content in gas are standardized, they are not resistant to the presence of hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulphide in the tested samples. These are the compounds that are most often mentioned as substances interfering in the determination of mercury in gases using the above-mentioned methods.

Opis:
The paper contains reference literature analysis concerning mercury content in Polish bituminous coal and post-mining waste as well as the impact of mercury content on the environment. The aim of the paper was to determine the occurrence of the risk of contamination of the environment with mercury compounds found in demolition bituminous coal landfills. Mercury, due to its toxic properties has been classified among the most dangerous substances to human health. There are three groups of sources of mercury release into the environment: natural, anthropogenic and remission. Coal mining, its processing and use in the energy sector has the greatest relevance regarding the pollution of the environment with mercury compounds in Poland. A review of reference literature shows that the average content of mercury in Polish bituminous coal varies within a wide range of 41e399 ppb, which is conditional on the origin, age and type of coal. The production of coal has led to a number of facilities in the form of structurally and age-varied landfills, heaps and mining waste dumps. The content of mercury in postmining waste is in the range from approximately 55 to 380 ppb. The problem of environmental contamination with mercury has attracted considerable interest due to the effects that its concentration have in the biosphere. On the basis of the existing data it has been found that the content of mercury in soils in areas degraded by mining and processing of coal is even 10e16 times higher, compared to the geochemical background. It is necessary to conduct research in this area due to the limited results of research on mercury content in deposited waste from the preparation and flotation of Polish bituminous coals and the potential harmful effect of mercury on the environment. The paper is dedicated to the mercury content in waste from the extraction and processing of bituminous coal.

Objectives To investigate 4 loci of 3 HSP70 genes in caustic soda production plant former workers, who have been exposed to metallic mercury vapors for a long time, and including numerous cases of chronic mercury intoxication (CMI). Material and Methods Polymorphisms in HSP70 gene family members (HSP1A1 (+190G/C, rs1043618), HSPA1B (+1267A/G and +2074G/C, rs1061581) and HSP1AL (+2437T/C, rs2227956)) genes were studied among 120 male workers involved in caustic soda production by mercury electrolysis at 2 plants in Eastern Siberia. These subjects had been chronically exposed to metallic mercury vapors for > 5 years and divided into 3 groups based on the occurrence and time of the CMI diagnosis, or absence of this disease. The Group 1 consisted of individuals (N = 46), who had had contact with mercury but were not diagnosed with the CMI. The Group 2 included workers (N = 56), who were diagnosed with the CMI longer than 14 years ago. The Group 3 consisted of the subjects (N = 18), who had been diagnosed with the CMI 3–5 years ago. The logistic regression analysis was used for 3 genetic models with and without adjustment for age and duration of mercury vapor exposure. Results We found that genotypes СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) had a high predictive risk of the CMI development (adjusted odds ratio ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$) = 5.58, p = 0.026 and $\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 14.7, p = 0.0015, respectively). Twelve individuals with the CMI had a specific combination of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes, which strongly associated with the diagnosis ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 12.3, p = 0.0285). Moreover, significant association with the CMI was also obtained for the haplotype G-C of 1267A/G and 190G/C polymorphisms (OR = 2.1, p = 0.018). Conclusions The association of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes and their combination for the CMI individuals suggests the role for HSPA1 genes in mercury-dependent mechanisms of the CMI development and progression. Comparison studies have been performed on determination of total mercury in wet deposition by two analytical methods. The studies were carried out in the period of March to November 2009 at the sampling point located near intensive traffic in Southern Poland (Zabrze). The difference between these two methods consisted in preparation of samples for analysis and in the type of measuring device. In both cases, the method of cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) after reduction of SnCl2 was used by means of a mercury analyzer model MA-2 produced by Nippon Instruments Corp. or of a mercury analyzer RA-915+ produced by LUMEX. Good agreement of the results have been obtained (relative error of the determination between the methods varied from 18% to 40%). Both analytical methods can be considered equivalent and used as a reference to each other. Quantity assessment of mercury wet deposition in southern Poland is lower than in 90 s, but still much higher in comparison with other countries in Europe and worldwide (ca. 30 μg·m -2·year -1.

Mercury emission field measurements were conducted for two types of coal from Polish mines. Total mercury content were evaluated in coal and ash on mercury analyzer atomic absorption spectrometer AMA 254. Obtained result shows that brown coal contains more mercury compared to hard coal (289 ppb and 66 ppb respectively for a polydisperse system). Mercury concentration in ashes is several times higher than for coal which means ash may be a good absorber for mercury. Also, application of oxy-fuel technology results in smaller amount of mercury absorbed in the ash which can be related to higher emission of Hg in the gaseous form.

The aim of the study was to analyse the balance of mercury (Hg), i.e. the content of this metal, its inflow and outflow, in the ecosystem of the Bay of Puck. Based on literature data and the results of the author’s own study, this analysis has shown that the main source of Hg pollution is the atmosphere. An estimated 1.1–3.8 kg of Hg enters annually from the atmosphere, whereas the mass of Hg carried there by river waters per annum is about 7 times lower (0.13–0.44 kg year−1). The 0.9 –2.7 kg year−1 of Hg released from Bay of Puck waters to the atmosphere is of the same order as the quantity deposited from the atmosphere. The total amount of Hg deposited in the upper (0–5 cm deep) layer of the sediments has been estimated at 240–320 kg, its rate of entry being c. 2.25–2.81 kg year−1. 0.25–1.25 kg year−1 of Hg are released from the bottom sediments to bulk water, while 0.61–0.97 kg remains confined in aquatic organisms, including 133 g in the phytobenthos, 2.6 g in the zooplankton, 420–781 g in the macrozoobenthos and 34 g in fish.

Opis:
Sediment cores collected in several areas of the southern Baltic were analysed for total mercury (HgTOT) and five operationally defined mercury fractions: HgA – contained in pore waters, HgF – bound to fulvic acids, HgH – bound to humic acids, HgS – bound to sulphide, and HgR – residual. An effort was made to quantify mercury fluxes at the sediment/water interface in the study area. Net mercury input, calculated on the basis of sedimentation rate and concentration in the uppermost sediments, ranged from 1 to 5.5 ng cm−2 year−1. Mercury remobilisation from sediments due to diffusion and resuspension was calculated from the proportion of labile mercury and the velocity of near-bottom currents. The results showed that the return soluble and particulate fluxes of mercury from the sediments to the water column constitute a substantial proportion of the input (20–50%), and are slightly higher than those found in pristine areas, although they are less than the values recorded in areas with a history of mercury contamination. In addition, an index was developed to assess the methylation potential of mercury in sediments. Mercury contained in pore waters, and mercury bound to fulvic and humic acids together with Loss on Ignition were used to calculate the semiquantitative methylation potential (Pm). Despite the simplicity of this approach, Pm correlates well with methyl mercury in fish from the study area.
