Opis:
Ceramic membranes are among one of the most promising candidates for membrane applications, owing to their excellent resistance to mechanical, chemical, and thermal stresses. These advantages make them an attractive filter material. An additional benefit which is extremely important for the industry, is their possibility of continuous operation at high efficiency while maintaining constant transmembrane pressure. Due to the inorganic material from which they are made, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being cleaned by steam sterilization and are resistant to micro-organisms. Although, due to low production costs, ceramic membranes are one of the most cost-effective membrane filtration technologies they are prone to substantial fouling. When used, a layer of contaminants is formed on the active surface, often reducing or completely filling the membrane pores resulting in fouling and concentration polarization. These phenomena cause a decreased efficiency of the process, which leads to the need for the membrane to be replaced with a new one. However, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being regenerated through a series of activities and the use of various chemical agents. The use of regenerated membranes would provide the opportunity to reduce exploitation costs. Although membrane regeneration does not guarantee a return to the initial parameters, it does allow for the recovery of high permeation flow. The aim of the research was to compare operating parameters of the ceramic membranes after multiple use and longtime storage with different condition of storage.

Opis:
Canthaxanthin (β,β-carotene 4,4' dione) used widely as a drug or as a food and cosmetic colorant may have some undesirable effects on human health, caused mainly by the formation of crystals in the macula lutea membranes of the retina of an eye. Experiments show the exceptional molecular organization of canthaxanthin and a strong effect of this pigment on the physical properties of lipid membranes. The most striking difference between canthaxanthin and other macular pigments is that the effects of canthaxanthin at a molecular level are observed at much lower concentration of this pigment with respect to lipid (as low as 0.05 mol%). An analysis of the molecular interactions of canthaxanthin showed molecular mechanisms such as: strong van der Waals interactions between the canthaxanthin molecule and the acyl chains of lipids, restrictions to the segmental molecular motion of lipid molecules, modifications of the surface of the lipid membranes, effect on the membrane thermotropic properties and finally interactions based on the formation of the hydrogen bonds. Such interactions can lead to a destabilization of the membrane and loss of membrane compactness. In the case of the retinal vasculature, it can lead to an increase in the permeability of the retinal capillary walls and the development of retinopathy.

Opis:
Two types of composite imprinted membranes, i.e., composite membrane comprised of D-Phe imprinted beads and D-Phe imprinted membrane or DCM and composite membrane comprised of L-Phe imprinted beads and L-Phe imprinted membranes or LCM, were synthesized by phase inversion technique after a uniform dispersion of beads within the polymeric solutions using simple physico-mechanical process. The assemblies of the prepared DCM, LCM and control membranes were employed in ultrafiltration for chiral separation of D, L-Phenylalanine racemate solution. DCM and LCM showed an improved adsorption capacity (0.334 mg g-1 and 0.365 mg g-1 respectively), and adsorption selectivity (2.72 and 2.98 respectively). However, the percent rejection of the template and counter enantiomer were lower than that of control membranes. Compared to control membrane, the DCM and LCM showed inverse permselectivity. These composite membranes having better adsorption and separation ability for Phenylalanine racemate solution will be suitable in the future for various other applications.

Biogas can be used as an alternative energy source. Unfortunately presence of carbon dioxide in a composition of biogas makes compression and transportation difficult. In addition CO2 makes biogas lower calorific. That is why new methods for carbon dioxide separation from biogas are to be explored. Obtained results for polypropylene membranes modifications by polydimethylosiloxanes are presented in this paper.

Opis:
The objective of this presentation is to show connections of activities leading to improved oil recovery (IOR) when prospecting for oil and gas. Increased wettability of injected water into the reservoirs is caused by specific ions. Technical limitations for production of designer water from seawater by membrane separation are high-lighted. Desirable characteristics of designer water are low NaCl concentrations and high divalent ion concentrations for improving wettability of Crude Oil, Brine and Rock (CBR). Experimental setup incorporated nanofiltration (NF) membranes for ion separation. Retentate from NF contains the main constituents of Designer Water. A property of NF is to retain divalent ions. Performance of the membranes was evaluated in terms of flux and rejection under varying feed compositions, pressures and recovery rates. The research comprised a technical-economical study for salt separation. Results were evaluated in terms of desalination efficiencies and energy requirements. A sensitivity test, spiking Na2SO4 in the feed seawater, showed a decrease in retention of Cl with increasing SO42- concentrations. A reduced permeate flux resulted, however, with increasing Na2SO4 concentrations.

Opis:
Track-etched membranes are porous systems consisting of a polymer foil with thin channels-pores - from surface to surface. The increasing interest in this kind of material is connected with the development of nanoporous materials with unique properties such as diode-like effects in membranes with highly asymmetrical nanopores. The materials can be used for molecular sensors and atom beam optics, development of nanocapillary bodies for modelling the transport of molecules and ions in constrained volumes. Control over pore geometry opens the way to a number of new applications of track-etch membranes (TMs). The nanopores were obtained by the ion-track etching method using surfactant-doped alkaline solutions. Control over the pore profile and dimensions was achieved by varying the alkali concentration in the etchant and the etching time. The pore geometry was characterized in detail using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM images of the surfaces and cleavages of TMs with different pore morphology are shown.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of microbiological tests of composite membranes made of cellulose (CEL) with graphene oxide (GO) admixture. At the beginning, the antibacterial properties of the GO in aqueous solutions of various concentrations (0.001; 0.01; 0.1% w/w) were studied, and the obtained results allowed to use GO as an additive to cellulose membranes. The solution used to prepare the membranes was a 5% cellulose solution (CEL) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc), into which various amounts of graphene oxide (GO) dispersed in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were added (0.5÷28.6% of GO). From this solution, composite membranes were formed using phase inversion method. It was observed that the GO addition influences the process of membrane formation and their physicochemical properties. The obtained membranes were subjected to microbiological tests using the Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcuc aureus) and fungi (Candida albicans). It was observed that the GO addition to the cellulose membrane (GO/CEL) inhibited the growth of bacteria and fungi, and the biological activity as dependent on the type of living organism and the size of GO particles.
