Opis:
Background. The World Health Organization considers an unhealthy diet to be related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases development. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate dietary habits among Wroclaw Medical University students with a view towards the nutritional risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Material and Methods. The study was conducted between the years 2004-2012. The study group consisted of 892 women and 276 men. The respondents were asked to complete a questionnaire based on the principles outlined in “The Polish food-based dietary guidelines”. Results. There were numerous eating habits not in compliance with the recommendations. Men failed to take ≥ 3 meals/ day (10.1% vs 6.3%) at a significantly higher frequency than women. Food products exhibiting a high glycaemic index (GI) were preferred over low GI, especially among men. About 62% of women and 75% of men failed to consume ≥ 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day. Women chose low-fat dairy products and meat significantly more frequently than men. 73% of women and 67% of men declared that they consumed vegetable oils on an irregular basis. About 8% of women and 11% of men used salt without restrictions, while 58% and 64% respectively, used sugar to sweeten beverages. Conclusions. Improper nutritional habits were observed in a high part of the studied students, especially among men. It is therefore strongly suggested that the rules of proper nutrition be promoted among this group.
Wprowadzenie. Według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia niezdrowa dieta jest związana z ryzykiem rozwoju chorób sercowo-naczyniowych. Cel. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2004-2012. Grupa badana liczyła 892 kobiet i 276 mężczyzn. Uczestnicy badania odpowiadali na pytania zawarte w ankiecie opracowanej na podstawie “Złotej Karty Prawidłowego Żywienia”. Wyniki. 5 porcji warzyw i owoców w ciągu dnia. Kobiety wybierały niskotłuszczowe produkty mleczne oraz mięsne istotnie częściej niż mężczyźni. 73% kobiet i 67% mężczyzn deklarowało nieregularne spożycie olejów roślinnych. Około 8% kobiet i 11% mężczyzn dosalało potrawy bez żadnych ograniczeń, a odpowiednio 58% i 64% badanych osób używało cukier do dosładzania napojów. Wnioski.

Background Students of medical universities, future employees, will have an impact on the shaping healthcare system. It is important to know and understand their opinions on the factors affecting working conditions and, consequently, changes necessary to improve effectiveness of health care. Students’ expectations can contribute to the changing working conditions for graduates and bring added value to health system redefinition. Material and Methods The study used factor analysis to check whether its use was justified. Reliability analysis was performed and structure indicators were determined for each question. The anonymous survey was conducted from September 2017 until March 2018; 1205 students were randomly selected for the sample. Results Eighty percent of the students declared interest in healthcare changes, >50% reported that the main factors influencing the work were competencies, financing, medical equipment and organization. Over 90% of the respondents indicated too long wait times for an appointment with a specialist and admission to hospital as the reason for the low efficiency of healthcare, whereas >80% of the survey participants considered insufficient funding to be a barrier. The need for changing the financing scheme was underlined by >90% of the students, and of health priorities by about 80%. Approximately 71% of the respondents were in favour of limiting the role of government in decision-making processes and introducing changes into the education system. Conclusions Students’ views on organizational and financial factors of working conditions can contribute to improvement in systemic solutions at both micro and macro levels. Limiting the role of politicians in planning and implementing reforms can motivate employees to be more creative and decisive. Analysis of opinions can bring added value to health policy and systemic changes and should be extended by further research results after the COVID-19 pandemic. Students’ interest in healthcare reform encourages reflection on enriching education with managerial skills.

Opis:
Background. Some of the major human health problems being confronted in the 21st century are cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It is recognised that having proper dietary habits (nutritional behaviour) and taking moderate physical exercise seem to be the best methods for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Objectives. To assess whether the dietary habits and levels of physical activity in first year medical students (freshers) are suitable for preventing cardiovascular disease. Material and methods. Subjects surveyed were Polish freshers studying medicine, physiotherapy, nursing and midwifery at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice situated in South Western Poland (n = 239, mean age 19.82 ± 1.2 years). Assessments, by questionnaire, included daily food intake, frequency of consuming foodstuffs with an adequate nutritional value and evaluating adverse dietary habits. Also considered were students’ health, types of physical activity undertaken, or if not, then awareness of the consequences so arising. Statistical analysis was performed by the Chi2 test. Results. These showed that 25% of students did not eat breakfast, 45.6% snacked in between main meals and 25% ate just before bedtime. Only 29% ate fruit and vegetables daily and 12% never had fish. Energy drinks were consumed by 39% of students daily and also 40% daily drank sweetened beverages. Furthermore, 40% of all subjects rated themselves as physically active, among which the highest were physiotherapy students at 70%. Regular physical activity was not considered essential to health by 5% subjects and 22% of nursing students believed that a lack of exercise, despite eating a healthy diet, did not affect health. The main reasons cited for not performing physical exercise were a lack of time (60%) and energy (26%). Conclusions. Despite being aware of the importance that a proper diet and adequate levels of physical activity confers on health, the students of medicine and related disciplines, nevertheless, did not implement theory into practice.
Wprowadzenie. Background. Dietary and lifestyle risk factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The excessive intake of products that could affect atherogenic effect and are rich sources of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and cholesterol conductive the occurrence of lipid metabolism disturbances in the body. Objective. Evaluation of fatty acids dietary intake and assessment of the students’ diets atherogenicity in the aspect of the CVD risk. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2011-2012. The study group included 100 females, dietetic students of the Wroclaw Medical University. The average age of the students was 21 years. Dietary habits were evaluated by the 3-day diet record method including one weekend day. Results. Average energy intake was 1673.9 kcal per day. The average daily total fat intake was 65.4 g and provided 34.5% of total energy intake. The percentage of energy from SFA in the diets of 82% students exceeded the recommended 10% and averaged 13.1%. The average percentage of energy from monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in the students diets was 12.9% and in the diets of 5% students did not exceeded recommended 10%. The average percentage of energy from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was 5.7% and in the diets of 66% students did not fulfilled the recommended 6-10%. About 80% of the students consumed less than recommended 2 g of C18:3 per day. Insufficient intake of EPA and DHA was observed in 71% students’ diets. The average n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio was 7.2 and in the 76% of female diets exceeded the recommended value of 4:1. The diets of 80% of students were considered as atherogenic, because of elevated value of Keys score. The ratio between PUFA and SFA in the female diets was incorrect and amounted to 0.52 (recommended value >1.0). Conclusions. Incorrect energy intake from daily diet and improper dietary intake of selected fatty acids in the diets of students may contribute to the development of CVD.
Wprowadzenie. Czynniki żywieniowe oraz elementy stylu życia odgrywają istotną rolę w patogenezie chorób układu krążenia (ChUK). Nadmierne spożycie produktów wykazujących działanie aterogenne, bogatych w nasycone kwasy tłuszczowe (NKT) i cholesterol sprzyja występowaniu zaburzeń w przemianach lipidów w organizmie. Cel. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2011/2012, w grupie 100 kobiet, studentek dietetyki Uniwersytetu Medycznego we Wrocławiu. Średnia wieku badanych kobiet wynosiła 21 lat. Sposób żywienia studentek oceniono metodą bieżącego notowaniajadłospisów z trzech dni, przy użyciu ankiety żywieniowej. Wyniki. Wartość energetyczna analizowanych CaRP wynosiła średnio 1673,9 kcal/dzień. Zawartość tłuszczów ogółem wynosiła średnio 65,4 g, co stanowiło 34,5% energii z CaRP. Udział energii z NKT przekraczał dozwolone 10% energii z CaRP w dietach 82% kobiet i wynosił średnio 13,1%. Niewystarczające spożycie EPA i DHA stwierdzono u 71% badanych studentek. Stosunek n-6/n-3 w badanych dietach wynosił średnio 7,2 i w CaRP 76% kobiet przekraczał zalecaną wartość 4:1. Diety 80% badanych kobiet, ocenione wskaźnikiem Keys’a, były aterogenne.

Opis:
BackgroundThe aim of the study was to assess the state of knowledge of Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) students on COVID-19, modes of transmission and preventive measures.Material and MethodsThe study was conducted in October 2020. The participants were all the students attending classes at MUW – 8922 persons. All had completed the online training “Work safety and hygiene during COVID-19.” To assess their state of knowledge an online questionnaire was made available on the MUW e-learning platform. The questionnaire comprised 4 parts: (1) awareness of rules of hand hygiene, (2) medical aspects of COVID-19, (3) preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection transmission in health care facilities, and (4) preventing infection transmissions in the society.ResultsThe majority of students (93.9%) demonstrated a sufficient level of knowledge. The highest passing threshold was found on the medical programme (96.7% of students with satisfactory level of knowledge), dentistry (96.2%) and pharmacy (95.5%). The statistically significant factors that differentiated student results proved to be faculty (p < 0.001), study programme (p < 0.001), year of studies (p = 0.001), form of studies (p < 0.001). The participants most often showed full knowledge (100% correct answers in sub-area) of preventing infection transmissions in the society (93.3%) and medical aspects of COVID-19 (91.8%), less complete in terms of ways of preventing infection transmission in health care facilities (85.4%), and in particular hand hygiene rules (78.3%). All the variables characterizing academic status (study programme, faculty, year and form of studies) were statistically significant differentiating factors for students’ full knowledge in all of the 4 analyzed sub-areas, while students’ sex only in the sub-area of COVID-19 medical aspects.ConclusionsThere is a clear need for conducting systematic educational activities among students of all medical study programmes and assessing their level of knowledge in those areas that were identified as least frequently controlled, namely, hand hygiene and infection transmission in health care facilities.

Opis:
The objective of this study was assessment of quality of the surgical curriculum in Pomeranian Medical University in years 2015-2017. Material and methods. A questionnaire-survey has been conducted in a group of 100 of Polish students from the Medical Faculty just before the final test-exam in subject surgery. Main topics of the questionnaire items concerned students’ opinion on the expected usefulness of acquired surgical knowledge for future medical practice, acquired manual skills, range of knowledge learned in particular academic years and on understanding the term “skill/competency-oriented teaching” surgery. Results. Knowledge from general and oncologic surgery was scored by students the highest as potentially most useful for future medical practice. Learning manual skills (mostly put stiches on a pig trotter) was considered the most valuable portion of surgical curriculum. Acquiring of manual skills was also believed as the closest of meaning the term “skill/competency-oriented teaching” surgery. Sixth (last) year of studying was considered the most effective in acquiring surgical knowledge. Most responders considered time assigned for teaching surgery in the university curriculum adequate, but not optimally employed. A critical discussion of the results was done in a light of the results of earlier studies and the literature. Conclusions. Outcomes of this study showed the students’ expectations in teaching surgery in the medical university curriculum and what was a grade of its performance. Awareness of this may have effect on modification of the curriculum and methods of undergraduate teaching surgery.

Opis:
Despite urbanization of contemporary society and limitation on the environmental areas, the threat of animal attacks on people is still an important social and medical problem. Although they usually do not have serious consequences, they are nevertheless disturbing and alarming enough to make people seek professional, medical help. The aim of this study was to estimate the epidemiology and the risk rate of animal related injuries in the urban and rural population, as well as to select the characteristics of such injuries, which are distinguishable from injuries caused by other factors. The work presents a retrospective analysis of the medical records of 1,872 patients treated at the Department of Trauma and Emergency Department between 2001-2004, who suffered from animal related injuries. Our analysis led to the following conclusions: Most animal related injuries, reported to doctors, are mild injuries. The threat of animal attack is similar in urban and in rural areas, and concerns mostly men between the ages of 22-40. Injuries caused by large animals, such as a horse or a cow, require hospitalization and should be considered as high-energy injuries. The vast majority were patients who after the treatment could return to their social and occupational activities; the mortality rate in hospitalized patients with animal related injuries was higher then in other injuries, but the difference was statistically irrelevant.

Opis:
Introduction: Tobacco smoking is still one of the greatest, avoidable, singular causes of death. Although students of medical faculties are expected to have solid knowledge about smoking hazards, a significant number of them still smoke. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess knowledge on tobacco dependence in a sample of students at the Medical University in Wroclaw. Material and methods: Between 2009-2011, non-compulsory lectures on the diagnosis and treatment of tobacco dependence were provided for 3rd to 6th year students of medicine at the Medical University in Wroclaw (170 students). The questionnaire contained 10 questions about smoking-related diseases and medicines used in tobacco dependence treatment. Results: 21% of students smoked cigarettes and 79% were never smokers. 36% of the study group was exposed to passive smoking at the university. Nearly 80% of survey respondents agreed with the statement that cigarette smoking can lead to psychological addiction as strong as drug addiction, but more than 12% of the respondents perceived smoking just as a strong habit. Only 6 out of 10 surveyed students recognised tobacco dependence as an illness classified in an international classification of diseases and health problems (ICD-10). The correct amount of the chemical substances to be found in tobacco smoke was known by 67.1% of all surveyed students. The vast majority of the surveyed students indicated correctly 2 brands of nicotine replacement therapy, but none of them could name even one chemical and corresponding trade name of the pharmaceutical with central effect. Conclusions: The level of knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of tobacco dependence among the students of the Medical Faculty in Wroclaw Medical University is low, and requires improvement through educational activities at both facultative and compulsory study level. Special attention should be paid to pharmaceutical treatment of the tobacco dependence syndrome.
