Opis:
This paper analyses the person of Marcelina Darowska and her activity in the light of new feminism. It was the Pope John Paul II who introduced the phrase to the philosophical-theological terminology. He applied it to women and encouraged them to become its promoters. The specific way in which a contemporary woman can fulfill the task indicated by the pope can be noticed in the very life, thought and activity of Marcelina Darowska.
Niniejszy artykuł analizuje postać i działalność błogosławionej Marceliny Darowskiej w świetle „nowego feminizmu”. Tym, kto wprowadził ów termin do terminologii filozoficzno-teologicznej, był papież Jan Paweł II. Używał go odniesieniu do kobiet i apelował, by były one jego promotorkami. Konkretny sposób, w jaki współczesna kobieta może spełnić to wskazane przez papieża zadanie, podpowiada całym swym życiem, myślą i działalnością Marcelina Darowska.

The article presents the life and educational activities of Blessed Marcelina Darowska, the co-founder of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her views on upbringing of young women. Mother Marcelina’s perception of education of girls in the 19th century seemed modern and beyond her time. In her opinion, there was a need of putting a stop to producing “parlour dolls” and provide young women with practical education. For the betterment of the country, she set up schools in Jazłowiec, Jarosław, Niżniów and Nowy Sącz. The girls attending the schools were brought up according to the system developed by Marcelina Darowska, based on religious and patriotic values. The Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary continues the work commenced by its founder; over time Mother Marcelina’s message remains valid and serves the subsequent generations of young Polish girls.

Opis:
Darowska’s system of upbringing, being a response to the needs of the times in which it was set up, served Poland to bring up girls to be Christian wives, mothers and citizens aware of their tasks. It was characteristic of this upbringing to embrace man in all his dimensions and aspects. That was an upbringing based on truth, love and Christian ethics. In terms of the principles of that upbringing which was in force the primary position was occupied by God who was supposed to be everything both in life and in upbringing; then came love for mother-country, faithfulness to one’s duties and an upbringing to self-instructive work. The method of ideal, objectivization of evil and specialization of effort were the preferred methods of upbringing. The means of the latter related to the accepted principles and employed methods. Instruction, knowledge and atmosphere of upbringing were the principal means of upbringing of the system in question. Thus understood upbringing as to values, ideals, means and principles as well as methods and means makes a value worthy of cognizing, being spread and made use of, taking into account the fact that the way of its putting into practice should consider new times and conditions.

CATACOMBS IN SZYMANÓW
katakumby w Szymanowie

koncepcja rozbudowy katakumb
Opis:
Since 1907 Szymanów, a locality situated in the environs of Warsaw, has been the seat of the Order of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. At the time, this was the only centre of the Order in the Kingdom of Poland, within the restrictive conditions imposed by the Russian partition authorities. The order purchased from Prince Konstanty Lubomirski a palace standing in a sprawling park, and soon expanded by adding a part intended for a boarding school. The moment the nuns arrived in Szymanów they took into consideration the need for constructing a sepulchre. The initiative was commenced at the end of the summer of 1910 and completed in the following year. The Warsaw-based architect Zygmunt Tillinger, who supervised the expansion of the palace, was the author of the project. The erected catacombs are a typical example of Classical sepulchral art from the early twentieth century. The basic element is an imposing portal in front of the corps of the burial part in the form of a projection towering over it. The first catacombs, built together with the portal, contain two spans facing each other. Each span contained three crypts, arranged along an axis on three storeys. The whole sepulchre was maintained in the form of an interior with a single entrance, covered with a barrel vault, and with side walls created by the spans with characteristic deep niches of the crypts. Subsequently, successive segments of the catacombs were added together with a strip situated perpendicularly to the axis of the sepulchre. The catacombs in Szymanow, whose architectural configuration became a point of departure for the expansion, are arranged in three strips, two of which are parallel and standing at a distance, thus making it possible to ensure unhampered communication between them; from the entrance they are closed with a monumental portal, designating the axis of the whole future premise. The third, diagonal strip was placed in the back, perpendicularly to the two first ones, and the distance between it and their gables was intended for a passageway. The passage along the section adjoining the portal was covered with a cradle ceiling, which at this point creates a covered corridor. The remaining sections of the passages are devoid of roofs. Pilasters marking the vertical rhythm of the spans, which, in turn, contain three crypt storeys each, divide each strip of the catacombs. The expansion of the Szymanow catacombs shaped the architectural structure in which the historical building erected in 1910 was connected with the contemporary edifice, referring to solutions presented in the oldest part and the segments added later on. The sepulchral premises produced by the expansion and the first catacombs posses a closed plan; the same holds true for the first catacombs. The historical portal is displayed along the axis of the expanded facade, whose new parts assumed the function of the northern and southern wing. Due to its portals, whose configuration of solids refers to the monumental, severe architecture of the early twentieth century, each wing turned into a background of the central part.

Opis:
The aim of the considerations incorporated into this paper is to present anew the meaning of the term “new feminism,” which John Paul II introduced into philosophical and theological terminology. Since the Pope did not fully clarify the meaning of the term, it is necessary to recall the contexts of John Paul II’s teachings that shed more light on the term, and especially to invoke those papal teachings related to the theology of marriage and family, and the theology of the body. This article also evokes and discusses those areas of papal teaching and speeches in which John Paul II appealed to women to become promoters of this new feminism. The second part of the work is devoted to those women who inspired or could have inspired John Paul II in the work of forming a new feminism. Amongst them, Saint Edith Stein and Blessed Marcelina Darowska stand out, both fully deserving the name of the precursors of Catholic feminism.
