Opis:
The purpose of the article is to present the motivation and attitude of Polish students towards learning German. The analysis presented is based on research conducted by the author in junior and senior high schools throughout Poland. The findings indicate that the predominant motive for learning German is instrumental. Motivation connected with communication is of less importance in the east of Poland than in the western part of the country. Motivation concerning the culture of German speaking countries does not seem to be relevant for Polish students. There is a strong correlation between increasing and decreasing motivation to learn German and the image of a German person and the attitude towards the German nation: those students who are positively motivated to learn the language present an extremely positive attitude towards German society, while those with lower motivation exhibit strong prejudice against Germans.

Opis:
A language biography is most often a reflection on one’s own linguistic development and therefore can be termed “language autobiography”. In its a broad sense, a language biography may include mother tongue acquisition, yet this article focuses solely on foreign language learning, with a special emphasis on the German language. The article provides insights into factors that motivate learners of German and into changes in these factors over a period of time, including the role of intercultural motivators. A theoretical and methodological introduction is followed by the results of a qualitative study conducted in five Polish institutions of tertiary education on a group of 73 students learning German. The excerpts of biographies quoted provide a picture of motivation as a dynamic process and moreover indicate that as present-day students get older, they are increasingly more thoughtful about their learning.

Opis:
Abstract: In academic education there is an increased emphasis on curricula with activities that stimulate the acquisition of knowledge, development of skills and shaping of attitudes that are needed during intercultural meetings. Although the discussion on the substantive and methodological aspects of intercultural education, which has been going on for several decades, has raised many theoretical considerations and led to practical solutions, the issue of the evaluation of intercultural competences still remains quite problematic. What is intercultural competence? How can it be measured ? What tools should be used for this? How can their relevance and reliability be measured? These issues are discussed in the context of the European educational Erasmus+ project Connect (2015-2018).

Opis:
The article is a review of Tomasz Mackiewicz’s book devoted to the figure and activities of Socrates in Norwid’s work. Mackiewicz’s book takes up an extremely important issue in the studies of the poet’s work. It has been present in the tradition of studies for many decades and Mackiewicz’s publication surely opens a new chapter in the reflection over Norwid. It is the more so because Norwid’s Socratism is concerned with so important problems as: Socrates’ irony, maieutics and poetry, self-creations and biographic myth-making, moral duties of poetry.

Opis:
Detection of mutations in families with a hereditary predisposition to colon cancer gives an opportunity to precisely define the high-risk group. 36 patients operated on for colon cancer, with familiar prevalence of this malignancy, were investigated using the DNA microarrays method with the potential detection of 170 mutations in MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, CHEK2, and NOD2 genes. In microarrays analysis of DNA in 9 patients (25% of the investigated group), 6 different mutations were found. The effectiveness of genetic screening using the microarray method is comparable to the effectiveness of other, much more expensive and time-consuming methods.
